Yeah, yeah, not a 90+ win team, not gonna win a title, yeah, yeah.

Although I must admit I chewed up another hat when the Beavers went down 0-2...

First, 94 wins is not going to be the best record in Baseball and, second, we are not going to win 94 games the year after we lost 95. We did not change our roster over enough for that.

Well, anyway, it is flattering that someone else thinks we have a good team here, but I do not need the pressure of fulfilling their fantasies... If we finish close to .500, I will think it has been a good year.

Next up: Opening Day!
Looks like that Baseball America had this team pegged (although not on the offensive side of the equation but still. 95 wins, PCL champs and now the World Series. Someone looking like GM of the year here

Congrats

The World Series

The very first World Series of the World Series Era!

Game 1
Portland Beavers (95-67 .586 Champions of the Pacific Coast League) at
Boston Braves (101-61 .623 Champions of the National League)

The Braves led the National League in scoring with 770 runs (4.75 per game) and allowed the fewest runs with 593 (3.66). 2B Randy Bradley (35-R) led the Majors in HR (34) and RBI (111). He hit .308 and was the MVP of the NLCS.

We are decidedly the underdogs here...

We made a trade with Boston in the off-season and each team has a few players that were with the other last year.

On their active roster is Steve Thwing (29-L) .285-186-6-24-.774 and RF Mike Griffin, who you can see in their starting lineup below. He has been a monster at bat when he has played. We knew he could hit, but he was traded because of his lack of mobility.

Players on our active roster that we got from them are P Terry Melton, SS Dave Lesley and LF Woody Griesbach.

POR: Frank Martin (26-R 15-12 2.99) Rookie vs. BOS: Andy Byers (32-R 19-4 2.97)

Byers pitched a 4 hit shutout in his last start in the NLCS. Only 11 HR and 39 BB in 245.2 IP during the season.

Counting the PCLCS, Martin is 0-4 in his last 5 starts. He was not horrible against Dallas, but he only made it 11.2 innings in 2 starts.

Let's win it right now, please! With 2 outs, P Don Schmidt is allowed to bat, so that he will not lose his chance to take the loss....

Boston 5, Portland 5

Top of the Eleventh:

Ivan Meraz walks. Is it a rule that every time you allow a relief pitcher to hit, he gives up runs the next inning? Ben Newman, who hit the home run off Antoine Redd to tie the game, strikes out! PH Steve Thwing (29-L) grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. 2 outs. PH Al Ashe (37-R), who did not have an AB in the regular season, doubles to right center and Meraz scores.... 6 to 5, Braves. Dave Classen grounds out to short. Just does not seem fair....

Bottom of the Eleventh:
New Pitcher: Lyle DeLeo (30-L). Eddie Thomas strikes out looking... Dave Benya grounds a hit to center. Dale Ainsworth grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. 2 outs. Perry Templet up...should I let him hit again?...Surely, we have used up all his luck against lefties.... What the heck, it is only a loss... Templet swings at the first pitch, as he is wont to do, and lines a double down the right field line! Ainsworth rounds 3rd and heads home.... Templet decides to head to 3rd and they let Ainsworth score and cut the throw off and try to nail Templet, but he is safe!!!!! Tie game! 6 to 6. They walk Jeff Austin intentionally. Randy James swings at the first pitch and grounds out to short...

Boston 6, Portland 6

Top of the Twelfth:
Dave Lesley is in to play 3rd. Ken Reid grounds a hit to left. Mike Griffin bunts him to 2nd. Much better than the HR I thought he wold hit. 2B Pat Cook (31-R), who entered earlier in a double switch, putting MVP candidate Randy Bradley on the bench, lines a hit to left and Reid stops at 3rd. Terry Hines strikes out! Ivan Meraz grounds out to short!!

Bottom of the Twelfth:
Full count to Gary Long and he takes strike three.... Jeff Schottler grounds a hit to center. PH Howard McNeal (30-R) grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. I cannot remember the last time he had a hit... I looked it up, September 24. 0 for 10 since. Eddie Thomas grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Boston 6, Portland 6

Top of the Thirteenth:
New Pitcher: Lonny Tomski (27-R). Cross your fingers AND your toes... With 1 out, Steve Thwing takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. PH LaSalle Vaughn (25-L), a .224 hitter with no HR during the season, lines out to short and Eddie Thomas fires to 1st to double off Thwing!!!

Bottom of the Thirteenth:
New Pitcher: Bruce Dixon (24-R). With 2 outs, Perry Templet draws a walk, but Jeff Austin grounds out to short.

Boston 6, Portland 6

Top of the Fourteenth:
Top of their order and I smell trouble a'brewin'.... But they go down 1-2-3!

Bottom of the Fourteenth:
Dave Lesley leads off by taking a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Gary Long up, and I am smelling a double play, but it is just a double! To center! Lesley stops at 3rd. With the infield in, they pitch to Jeff Schottler and he lines one over the shortstop's head for a hit and Lesley scores and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!

Won - 7 to 6 in 14 innings

We had 16 hits and made no errors
Boston had 14 hits and made 1 error

Terry Melton went 5 innings, allowed 4 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 4.
LHP Lou Hertzberg pitched 1 perfect inning.
RHP Barry Chapman (H 2) faced 4 batters and got them all out with 1 strikeout.
RHP Antoine Redd (BS 1) faced 4 batters and got 2 out, allowed 1 run, 1 hit, a home run and 1 HB.
RHP Don Schmidt went 4 innings, allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 2.
RHP Lonny Tomski (W 1-0) went 2 scoreless innings and allowed 1 walk.

Rich Summers went 5 innings, gave us 4 runs, 7 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 1.
RHP Bruce Dixon (L 0-1) pitched 1+ innings, gave us 1 run, 2 hits and 2 walks.

CF Perry Templet had 4 hits with 2 doubles and a home run, drew a walk and had 3 RBI. 3B Randy James had 2 hits with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. 3B Dave Lesley, in his only appearance, drew a walk and scored the winning run. 2B Gary Long hit 2 doubles. LF Jeff Schottler had 4 hits, was walked intentionally, was beaned, stole 2 bases, scored a run and had 2 RBI, including the game winner. PH Gordon Saunderson had a hit and scored a run.

For the Braves, 3B/SS Ben Newman had 3 hits with a double and the game-tying home run in the 9th and scored twice.

Pepe's report on Barry Chapman is that he has a mild muscle pull and will take about a week to heal, but he can probably pitch in the meantime. That stinks, as he is our only lights-out reliever right now and he may or may not be lights out pitching with the injury.

We lead the series 3 games to none.

Well, it is certainly good to win these games, but no one has every won the first 3 games of a World Series and won the thing....of course, no one has ever won any World Series at all before....a sweep would be very nice.... I at least would like to 1 ) win it and 2) win it in Portland. The Braves won 4 games in a row against St. Louis, so they are certainly capable of doing it against us.

Full count to Randy Bradley and he lines the payoff pitch to center for a hit and Reid goes to 3rd. Bottom of the Third:

Dale Ainsworth leads off with a home run to center! 2 to 1, Braves. Perry Templet takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Jeff Austin lines a hit to right. With 1 out, Templet gets caught stealing 3rd... I wish I could ban stealing 3rd base... Gary Long flies out to center.

Mike Griffin grounds one to short, but Eddie Thomas throws the ball away for a 2 base errors and Alvarez scores and runners are at 2nd and 3rd for Randy Bradley. 4 to 3, Beavers. We do NOT walk Bradley for some unknown reason and he beats out an infield hit and Reid scores to tie the game at 4. Terry Hines grounds out to 3rd. It really hurts when you have a guy in the lineup just for his glove and his glove lets you down....

The World Series

Game 6
Portland Beavers (3-2 Champions of the Pacific Coast League) at
Boston Braves (2-3 Champions of the National League)

POR: Johnny Maskell (24-R 5-8 3.89) vs. BOS: Ron Bozeman (32-L 16-10 2.49) All-Star

We won this matchup in Game 2, 5 to 1. Bozeman gave us 4 runs in 5 innings and gave up 3 home runs to Jeff Schottler.

Maskell went 7 innings and allowed only 1 run on 5 hits. My confidence that he can repeat that performance is not high. Nor do I think we can hit Bozeman like we did in that game...

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: RF Dale Ainsworth (27-L .310-575-11-60-.819)
2: SS Eddie Thomas (25-R .210-281-2-30-.542) Rookie
3: 1B Jeff Austin (29-R .237-562-16-69-.673)
4: CF Jeff Schottler (24-R .261-487-13-53-.729) Rookie
5: 3B Randy James (33-R .275-506-18-85-.788)
6: 2B Gary Long (32-R .260-585-9-58-.678)
7: LF Woody Griesbach (24-R .242-91-2-7-.666) Rookie
8: C Dave Benya (27-S .220-127-2-10-.584)
9: P Johnny Maskell (24-R .222-36-0-4-.500) Rookie

Changing things up a little. I was tempted to start Perry Templet, but Griesbach hit a double off Bozeman last time. The last game Dave Benya started, he made 4 errors and had a passed ball. If we lose this game, all the momentum will be with the Braves.

BOSTON
1: CF Dave Classen (27-L .291-484-1-30-.703) 15 SO
2: LF Ken Reid (34-S .317-498-17-80-.892)

4: 2B Randy Bradley (35-R .308-584-34-111-.936) All-Star
5: 1B Terry Hines (28-S .272-423-6-52-.700)
6: C Ivan Meraz (31-R .292-480-10-62-.802) All-Star
7: 3B Ben Newman (25-L .266-282-8-42-.733) Rookie
8: SS Ricardo Alvarez (34-S .226-464-8-.659)
9: P Ron Bozeman (32-L .205-88-0-10-.464) All-Star

Game Start: 8:05 PM
Ballpark: Fenway Park
Weather: 50 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 17 MPH wind blowing out to left.
Attendance: 44,684

That wind is not a good thing for Johnny Maskell, who is already prone to the long ball.

Top of the First:
Dale Ainsworth flies out to deep center. Eddie Thomas strikes out. Jeff Austin flies out to left.

Bottom of the First:
Dave Classen lines out to center. Ken Reid doubles to center. A wild pitch sends him to 3rd. Mike Griffin walks. Randy Bradley grounds into a 4-6-3 double play!!!!

Portland 0, Boston 0

Top of the Second:
With 1 out, Gary Long draws a walk, but gets caught stealing...

Bottom of the Second:
Terry Hines swings at the first pitch, gets jammed, but bloops a hit to left. Ivan Meraz and his strained rib cage muscle double to left. Another wild pitch and Hines scores. 1 to 0, Braves. We are going to lose a World Series after being up 3 games to none.... Ben Newman doubles down the right field line and Meraz scores. 2 to 0, Braves. The Bullpen is up. Ricardo Alvarez grounds out to 2nd and Newman goes to 3rd. 1 out. P Ron Bozeman grounds a hit to right and Newman scores. 3 to 0, Braves. Call to the Bullpen: Antoine Redd (31-R). Dave Benya bounces one back to the box, but P Ron Bozeman throws it away for a 2 base error and Schottler scores! 3 to 2, Braves. Runners at 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. PH Glenn Pearce (39-R) works the count full, but then strikes out.

Bottom of the Fourth:

With 2 outs, Randy Bradley grounds a hit to right, but Terry Hines flies out to center.

Portland 3, Boston 3

Top of the Sixth:
We go down in order.

Bottom of the Sixth:
Ivan Meraz, already hurting with a strained rib cage muscle, takes a pitch in the side to lead off the inning. With 2 outs, they pinch-hit for P Ron Bozeman with John Mark (32-R), hitting .400 in the post season (8 for 20). He pops one to short, but Eddie Thomas drops it.... E-6 Dave Classen lines a hit to left and Woody Griesbach makes an error on his throw and a run scores and runners are at 2nd and 3rd. 4 to 3, Braves. Ken Reid grounds out to 3rd.

Portland 3, Boston 4

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Lyle DeLeo (30-L). PH Dave Lesley (26-R) flies out to right. With 2 outs, Eddie Thomas grounds a hit to right, but Jeff Austin grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Curt Riley (35-R), to give up some home runs... Dave Lesley stays in to play short. Mike Griffin grounds a hit to right. Randy Bradley bunts him to 2nd. Terry Hines pops out to 2nd. Ivan Meraz grounds out to 3rd!

Portland 3, Boston 4

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: George Scaggs (27-L), going for his 3rd straight save. It is the fourth straight game that he has pitched. Steve Thwing (29-L) is in to play left in a double switch. With 2 outs, Gary Long lines a hit to center. Woody Griesbach blisters one, but right to the center fielder.

Bottom of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (26-R). They go down in order.

Portland 3, Boston 4

Top of the Ninth:
With 2 outs, Dale Ainsworth lines a hit to right. PH Perry Templet (23-L) to face a lefty.... it is either him or Howard McNeal, who is now an automatic out. Templet grounds out to 2nd....

Lost - 4 to 3

We had 9 hits and made 2 errors
Boston had 10 hits and made 1 error

Johnny Maskell went 1.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 5 hits, walked 1 and struck out no one. He threw 2 WP.
RHP Antoine Redd faced 2 batters and got 2 out and allowed 1 hit.
RHP Lonny Tomski pitched a perfect inning with 1 strikeout.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (L 0-2) pitched 3 innings, allowed 1 unearned run, 3 hits, 1 HB and struck out 3.
RHP Curt Riley pitched 1 scoreless inning and allowed 1 hit.
RHP Barry Chapman pitched a perfect inning.

Ron Bozeman (W 1-1) went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.
LHP George Scaggs (SV 3) pitched 2 scoreless innings, gave us 2 hits and struck out 1. At least he should be unavailable for tomorrow's game.

SS Eddie Thomas had 2 hits, but made a huge error on a friggin' popup. CF Jeff Schottler hit 2 doubles, scored a run and had an RBI.

The series is tied at 3 games apiece after we have lost 3 straight 1 run games....
I am dreading tomorrow's game....

Melton gave them 4 runs in 5 innings with 9 hits. He still has not won a game since June 24....that's almost 4 months ago....my confidence in winning this game is not high...

Bottom of the First:

Dave Classen tries to bunt, but whiffs, so he beats out an infield hit instead. Ken Reid flies out to right. Classen steals 2nd. Mike Griffin flies out to very deep center and Classen moves over to 3rd. Randy Bradley grounds out to short!

Portland 1, Boston 0

Top of the Second:

With 2 outs, Phil Parker draws a walk, but Eddie Thomas grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Second:

They go down in order.

Portland 1, Boston 0

Top of the Third:
With 1 out, Dale Ainsworth grounds our first hit up the middle. He tries to steal, but they, for they one millionth time, have a pitchout called and he is out. And Perry Templet draws a walk to make the caught stealing even more futile... Jeff Austin flies out to left.

Bottom of the Third:
Ricardo Alvarez lines a hit to center. P Rich Summers tries to bunt him over, but bunts one foul with 2 strikes on him. Dale Ainsworth makes another amazing catch on a line drive hit over his head by Dave Classen! Ken Reid grounds out to short.

Portland 1, Boston 0

Top of the Fourth:

Jeff Schottler leads off with a double down the left field line. Ice cold Randy James lines a hit to left and Schottler scores! 2 to 0, Beavers! The next three make outs, though.

Bottom of the Fourth:

Mike Griffin blasts one to right center, but Perry Templet catches the ball and slams into the wall! He seems okay. They go down in order.

Portland 2, Boston 0

Top of the Fifth:
With 1 out, Dale Ainsworth grounds a hit to center. He steals 2nd. He steals 3rd. Perry Templet swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds a hit up the middle and Ainsworth scores! 3 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Austin flies out to the Monster in left and P Rich Summers is hurt. New Pitcher: Jay Lien (25-R). Steve Thwing is in left in a double switch. Ken Reid moves to 1st. Jeff Schottler then hits one to almost the same spot Austin did with the same result, an out.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Ivan Meraz leads off with a double off the Green Monster. The Bullpen is alerted. Ben Newman grounds out to 2nd and Meraz moves to 3rd. Ricardo Alvarez grounds out to the pitcher. Steve Thwing homers down the right field line.... 3 to 2, Beavers. Dave Classen grounds out to 3rd.

Portland 3, Boston 2

Top of the Sixth:
We go down in order.

Bottom of the Sixth:

2-3-4 hitters for them, their 3 best. They go down 1-2-3!

Portland 3, Boston 2

Top of the Seventh:

With 1 out, PH Gordon Saunderson (26-L) flares one to left, but Steve Thwing makes a diving catch. Dale Ainsworth lines out to center.

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (26-R). PH Jesus Torrez (37-L), who hit .130 during the regular season, beats out an infield hit... Ivan Meraz lays down a bunt, but C Phil Parker is on it quick and fires to 2nd to get the force and Eddie Thomas fires to 1st for a double play!!! 1-6-3. Ben Newman grounds a hit to center. PH Steve Pike (25-L), a .220 hitter, doubles to left... He hurts himself... Pinch-runner: John Mark (32-R). Steve Thwing grounds out to short! Eddie Thomas covered a lot of ground to reach that one!

Portland 3, Boston 2

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Lyle DeLeo (30-L). John Mark stays in to play short. He is not a very good shortstop. We go down in order.

Bottom of the Eighth:

Top of their order. Dave Classen lines a hit to left. Ken Reid bunts him over to 2nd. Mike Griffin grounds out to 2nd and Classen goes to 3rd. Quick pool on how Classen will score: WP, Balk or Randy Bradley HR? I take an Eddie Thomas error... We pitch to Randy Bradley with the pitcher on deck for some reason and he grounds out to the pitcher!!!

Portland 3, Boston 2

Top of the Ninth:
With 1 out, Gary Long grounds a hit to left. PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) is sent up. A wild pitch sends Long to 2nd. They walk Griesbach intentionally. Eddie Thomas grounds into a force at 2nd, 5-4. Runners at 1st and 3rd with 2 outs. PH Dave Lesley (26-R) is sent up to hit for the pitcher. Thomas steals 2nd. Lesley lines one hard, but right to the left fielder.

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (26-R). Dave Lesley stays in to play 3rd and Dave Benya is in to catch. PH Al Ashe (37-R), the fellow who did not bat in the regular season or the NLCS, but had a pinch-hit double against us, is up to bat. He grounds a hit to left.... Ivan Meraz is asked to bunt again, and again, he fails, but we only get the force at 2nd this time, 1-6. Ben Newman strikes out!! One out from winning the World Series.... if we lose now, you will have a hard time finding me.... John Mark is up. .240 hitter in the regular season, but .381 in the post-season. 8 for 21 with 5 doubles. He pops one up in foul territory and Dave Lesley has a bead on it and he does not drop it!!!! And this Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!!!!

Won - 3 to 2

We had 6 hits and made no errors
Boston had 9 hits and made 1 error

Terry Melton (W 1-0) went 6 innings, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 1.

Rich Summers (L 0-1) went 4.2 innings, gave us 3 runs (2 earned), 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 1.

RF Dale Ainsworth had 2 hits, stole 3 bases and scored 2 runs. LF Jeff Schottler hit a double and scored a run.

LF Jeff Schottler was named the World Series MVP. He hit .393 (11 for 28) with 3 HR and 7 RBI.

For the playoffs, CF Perry Templet hit .477 (21 for 44 in 12 G) with 4 2b and 3 HR, 10 R, 9 RBI, 4 BB and 1 SO. 1.294 OPS.
Jeff Austin led the team in RBI with 13 and hit .339 with 4 HR in 56 AB.
As a team, we hit 14 HR in 14 G, all of them by Templet, Austin, Schottler and Dale Ainsworth.

The last 5 games of the Series were all 1 run affairs.

Okay! The dread is gone!!

Tuesday, October 23, Year I

I had some great news today! 1B Joe Harrison (35-R), our $1.7 million Gatorade Guard, came to my office and told me that he was retiring. We were obligated to pay him another $1.7 million next year. Like an idiot, I blurted out without thinking, "You're just gonna walk away from all that money?" What if I changed his mind? But he said," Yes, sir. I can't play anymore and it's embarrassing. It's not worth that much money to me to sit out there every day and be an object of ridicule." So, I thanked him for his service to the Beavers and wished him well!

Also, the League's classification of Free Agents came out today and our only free agent to be, 3B Glenn Pearce (39-R), is pegged as a type B! So, we will offer him arbitration and hope to heavens he does not accept and then hope some team signs the big ol' tub o' lard.

And also, our owner, Mickey Shenker (77), who I don't think I've ever mentioned before, informed me that our budget was getting boosted $1.2 million to $15.6 million. That moves us up to 20th highest of the 24 teams! The Giants have a budget of over $24 million.

Before we get started on worrying about next year's roster, I thought it might be instructive to see how all the players we traded away made out this season, not including the non-prospect types.

Trade #1:
To Boston
SP Dane Wynne (29-R) was traded away due to health issues. He did not suffer an injury at all this season. He started the season with Richmond of the International League (AAA). He went 4-0 in 10 GS with a 2.10 ERA. The Braves called him up and he made 1 start for them, getting a win by pitching 7.2 innings and allowing only 1 hit and no runs. He walked 4 and struck out 8. They tried to send him back to AAA, but lost him to waivers to Seattle. The Rainiers only had him for 4 days and he did not pitch for them. They lost him to waivers to Chicago. In 18 starts for the Cubs, he was 6-5 with an ERA of 4.00. Wrigley is a tough place to pitch. He gave up 15 HR in 99 IP. Small regret that we did not keep him.

OF/3B Steve Thwing (29-L) was traded away because he is a free swinger. In 186 AB for the Braves, he hit .285/.333/.441. We could have used him. Small regret.

2B Don Russell (21-R) was traded away due to concerns about his proneness to errors. He played mostly for Clarksdale of the Cotton States League (C). In 83 G, he made 11 errors. .709 OPS. No regrets.

RF Mike Griffin (27-R) was traded away due to his immobility. He hit .323/.410/.549 in 235 AB for the Braves, but was brutal in the field. No regrets.

The players we received from Boston were SP Terry Melton, SS Dave Lesley, OF Woody Griesbach and 2 other prospects, 1 of whom, 3B Omar Flores (20-L) will get an audition in Spring Training to make the Beavers.

I think this was our best trade of the off-season.

Trade #2:
To Baltimore
SP Frank Schindler (25-R) was traded due to concerns about his control and ability to keep the ball in the park and because he is a slacker. In 19 starts for the Orioles, he went 5-8 with a 3.81 ERA. He only gave up 11 HR in 113.1 IP, but did walk 50 (4.0 per 9). He would have been at least as good as some of the bums we pitched in the 5 spot in the rotation, but he is a slacker, so no regrets.

RF Jim Anderson (25-L), a former 1st round draft choice of the Beavers, was traded away because we thought his only asset was his power. In 268 AB for the Orioles, he hit .254/.333/.407 with 10 HR and 33 RBI. His fielding was not good. No regrets.

The only player we received in the trade was SS Pete Frey (22-L). He spent the entire season at Visalia of the California League (A) and only hit .218 in 564 AB and his defense was not that good.

Not a great trade, but I would still rather have Frey than the other two.

Trade #3:
To New York
3B Scott Benford (26-R) was traded away because of being too slow. He got 42 AB for the Giants and hit .262 with a .741 OPS, but he spent most of the season in AA. No regrets.

None of the other 4 players we gave them did much of anything.

We received only SP John Alecci in this deal.

No much return for either side in this trade.

Trade #4:

To San Francisco
RP Jesse Adcock (28-L) was traded away only because we coveted the players we received. He led the majors in saves with 39, but had 10 losses and a 3.90 ERA fir the Seals. With the failure of Jerry Wilhelm to provide us with a lefty who could consistently get lefties out, there is considerable regret that he was traded away.

But we certainly got fair return in SP Frank Martin, SP Tom Horn and RP Dave Reams.

Trade #5:
Was a non-transaction with no players of any import.

Trade #6:

To Pittsburgh
SP Rick Hammer (23-L) was traded away for lacking stamina and for issues with HR and BB. He went 12-8 in 24 starts with a 3.96 ERA for the Pirates. He allowed 17 HR, but only walked 48 (3.3 per 9) and struck out 104 (7.2 per ). Not a bad rookie season, but no regrets.

SP Ron Fiorini (22-R) was only traded because the Pirates wanted him. He still looks like a long shot to make the majors and pitched in C and B Ball.

We got RP Barry Chapman, who was our best reliever this year, and a high risk, high reward prospect, SP Joe Fuller, who now looks like he will not be so special.

A good trade, I'd say.

Trade #7:
was another non-transaction.

Trade #8:
To Detroit:
3 players who were all traded because they do not walk.

IF Ray Faircloth (24-R) hit .248/.293/.367 for the Tigers in 278 AB with 6 HR and 37 RBI. No regrets.

The other two, C Chris Robinson (21-R) and SS Lenny Bennett (21-L) played in the minors and look the same: pretty good players who don't want to walk. No regrets.

We got our Minor League Player of the Year, LF Tony Casarez in this deal.

Great Trade!

Trade #9:
To San Francisco

CF Roger Lowell (24-S) was traded for being a slacker. He hit .274 in AA with a .706 OPS. No regrets.

We got 3 relief pitching prospects who might be worth something, but probably not a great deal.

A decent trade.

Trade #10:

To Dallas

SP Jorge Ortiz (29-L), who had a pretty good Major League track record, was traded due to injury concerns. He did not pitch in the Majors for Dallas. No regrets.

LF Jim Bakutis (26-S) was traded for his lack of defense. He hit .297/.387/.477 for the Eagles in 172 AB with 5 HR and 23 RBI. We could have surely used his bat off the bench. Some regret here.

C Ron Webb (20-R) was traded for being too slow. He hit .295 in rookie ball. No regrets.

CF Chris Hagerty (24-L) was traded for swinging at everything. He hit .294/.339/.422 for the Eagles in 429 AB with 5 HR and 53 RBI and 20 AB and excellent defense. He did not walk much, but neither did any one we kept on the Beavers. We were short of good pinch-hitting options from the left side and could have used him for certain. Some regret.

We got World Series MVP Jeff Schottler and an injury prone super prospect, SP Fred Hunt, in this deal, so I think it was a good trade.

Trade #11
To Brooklyn

These players were only traded to please Brooklyn and get SS Eddie Thomas form them.

SS Jamie Brodsky (27-R) hit .242/.320/.292 in 264 AB with 1 HR and 18 RBI. No regrets.

CF Pat Campbell (22-R) was never really a prospect. He can play great D, but cannot hit. No regrets.

We got SS Eddie Thomas and a very good looking left-handed RP prospect, Dave Bonneville, so I think this was a great trade.

Arbitration Hearings

We had 7 players eligible for arbitration. Only 3 of them are players we want back for next year:: P Ron Wolf, P Lou Hertzberg and RF Dale Ainsworth. 3 of them are players we will sign and then try to trade: P Antoine Redd, C Dave Benya and LF Howard McNeal. 1 of them was non-tendered: SS Manuel Jimenez, who was 5 for 40 (.125) for the Beavers before getting sent to the minors.

We did not work out any deals with any of them before the hearings.

Here are the results:
Last Year's Salary - This Year's Salary - Losing offer
SP Ron Wolf (27-R) $416,000 - $581,200 - Club: $483,000
RP Lou Hertzberg (30-L) $225,000 - $325,000 - Club: $260,000
RP Antoine Redd (31-R) $122,000 - $175,000 - Club: $140,000
C Dave Benya (27-S) $50,000 - $65,000 - Player: $125,000
LF Howard McNeal (30-R) $472,000 - $550,000 - Player: $591,250
RF Dale Ainsworth (27-L) $136,000 - $1,125,000 - Club: $850,000

We got hosed....
