Game 51 – June 7th
3 – Royals
1 – California

WP – Bret Saberhagen (6-4)
LP – Kirk McCaskil (6-5)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (8)

The Angels made it interesting in the ninth with runners on first and third, but Quiz got Ruppert Jones to pop out to end the game. Balboni provided the difference hitting his 13th home run in the 6th. Saberhagen struck out 7.

Game 52 – June 8th
2 – Royals
1 – California

WP – Charlie Leibrandt (5-6)
LP – Ron Romanick (3-8)
SV – Al Holland (1)

Errors by Balboni, Leibrandt, and White were disappointing, but didn't ultimately impact the outcome. White singled in Wilson and Collins in the 6th and that was all that Leibrandt needed. He struck out 4 in 7 innings. Holland got the final 4 outs for his first Royal save. Quiz could have pitched, but having thrown in 5 of June's 6 games, (and the bottom of the order coming up) I gave him the day off.

Game 53 – June 9th
9 – Royals
4 – California

WP – Bud Black (5-4)
LP – Bob Kipper (0-4)

4 Royal Home Runs – Brett (11), McRae (1), Wathan (2), Balboni (14) – brought in 7 Royal runs. Black pitched well enough to pick up a quality start. Wilson extended his hitting streak to 11 games; Collins to 14 games.

-
Wilson and Collins have also stolen bases in 6 straight games, including 9 of 10. They've been a great 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup in the 10 games since Collins was acquired. In those 10 games they have a combined 21 runs and are hitting .405. The team is 9-1.

-
My record 25-28; 1st! .5 game ahead of Texas
Real Life: 28-25; 3rd; 5 games behind California

A third of the way through the season and everything seems to have fallen into place. #5 starter is a bit of a flux.

I'm a half game ahead of Texas and I'm not sure what they're doing. They traded team home run and RBI leader RF Larry Parrish (.253; 8 HR; 33 RBI) and a minor league catcher to the Astros for 2 minor league prospects who don't look to have much going for them. They have Nick Capra (.186; 0; 3) in the starting lineup now.

George Brett is on pace for 61 doubles, the most in the American League since Charlie Gehringer had 60 in 1936.

Balboni is on pace for 43 HR's, but only 107 RBI. He's hitting .325 since I dropped him to the 5th spot in the lineup.

Brett is hitting .404 with 3 HR's and 28 of his 37 RBI's with runners in scoring position.

You are DOING it, man!

I love the moves you've made, especially getting Dave Collins from Oakland. That's kinda outside-the-box thinking that still makes total sense and seems to be working out. Maybe I just got too fixated on Lonnie Smith.

If the Rangers are the only team you've got to worry about, then you can cruise to the AL West title. Their pitching is bad and they're heading for a late-summer swoon, as so many Texas teams did back then.

I'm surprised neither the Angels nor the Athletics are putting up much of a fight in the division. In real life, the Angels took the Royals all the way to the last day of the season. In a few of my sims, the Athletics ran away with the division.

You've taken a patient, focused approach and it's starting to pay off. You didn't get discouraged when a lot of other people might have.

The injury to Jackson is a bummer, but if you can get, say, 3 innings from Gura and then another 2 or 3 from Huisman, then you've put together a normal start. If the two of them give up only 4 runs or less in 6 combined innings, you could maybe go .500 or better in those starts until Jackson gets back.

This is getting fun!

Game 54 – June 10th
1 – Royals
2 – Oakland

WP – Don Sutton (5-4)
LP – Mark Gubicza (5-4)
SV – Jay Howell (8)

So goes the top of the order, so goes the team? Wilson and Collins were a combined 1-8. Brett scored on a Frank White single in the 4th, but Oakland catcher Danny Goodwin hit a solo homer in the 5th to cap off the scoring. Gubicza pitched well, Sutton pitched better!

Game 55 – June 11th
7 – Royals
5 – Oakland

WP – Al Holland (1-1)
LP – Tim Birtsas (2-3)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (9)

Biggest takeaway is that perhaps Steve Farr doesn't have the mindset yet for high leverage situations. Up 3-2 in the 7th, he came on in relief with 2 runners on, and served up a Gopher Ball to Dave Kingman. Then again, Kingman is Kong, so he's going to knock a few.

But, down 5-3, and down to our last out, Balboni walked, and Motley pinch ran. I didn't really need the pinch runner though as Jorge Orta turned a 1-1 fastball 389 for a game-tying homer. Against a lefty no less!

In the 10th, Sheridan reached on an error; went to second as Royster reached first on an attempted sacrifice. A double steal put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Sheridan scored on a Willie Wilson sac fly, and Royster scored on a Dave Collins double.

Gura tossed a solid 6 innings, getting into most of his trouble in the 7th. He'll stay in the rotation and we'll see how the next two or three starts go.

Game 56 – June 12th
5 – Royals
2 – Oakland

WP – Keith Atheroton (2-2)
LP – Bret Saberhagen (6-5)
SV – Jay Howell (9)

Never intentionally walk the bases loaded hoping Dave Kingman will hit into a double play.

-
Dropped 2 of 3 so not a particularly good series.

Greg Pryor asked about an extension, but he's only played in 7 games so far, and if Brett got hurt, I don't know if I'd go to him for more than a week.

It’s amazing how the AL West leader is below .500 so late in the season. And it’s not just a four team division like now. There are seven teams.

The AL East must have a lot of teams above .500.

Only 4 teams in the AL East are over 500. Detroit, New York and Toronto are pretty much running rough shod over everyone else.

I suspect it things might start to balance out once we play more divisional games, but then again, it's a balanced schedule so maybe not!

Game 57 – June 13th
2 – Royals
1 – Seattle

WP – Charlie Leibrandt (6-6)
LP – Matt Moore (6-5)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (10)

Brett singled in Wilson and Collins in the 3rd, and that's all Leibrandt needed. He scattered 9 hits across 7 innings, striking out 2. Quisenberry got the final 6 outs.

Game 58 – June 14th
2 – Royals
4 – Seattle

WP – Salome Barojas (2-2)
LP – Mark Huismann (0-1)
SV – Ed Vande Berg (1)

The fluid right-handed-close-game reliever derby fell on Huismann who gave up a 2-run homer to Gorman Thomas in the bottom of the 8th to give the Mariners the lead.

We still should have won the game. We loaded the bases in the top of the ninth with no outs, but Brett and White couldn't bring anyone in.

Game 59 – June 15th
5 – Royals
4 – Seattle

WP – Mark Gubicza (6-4)
LP – Matt Young (8-3)
SV – Al Holland (2)

Gubicza was cruising with a shutout and a 1 run lead when we scored 4 in the 8th with the help of a Hal McRae 2-run double. Which was fortunate. I wanted to get Gubicza the shutout, but he loaded the bases in the 9th. I chose LaCoss to try and finish the non-save game, but he gave up a Grand Slam to Dave Henderson. With Alvin Davis up next, I brought in Holland to finish the game, which he did with only a walk.

Game 60 – June 16th
0 – Royals
3 – Seattle

WP – Mark Langston (4-5)
LP – Larry Gura (0-2)
SV – Ed Nunez (11)

Mark Langston came into the game with a 3-5 record and an ERA over 7. And he of course, he combined with Ed Nunez on a shutout. We had 7 hits, but couldn't string them together. McRae got on base 3 times, but White and Balboni went 0-8 behind him.

Gura pitched OK. 3 runs in 6 innings, 4 walks and 3 strikeouts. Farr pitched and struck out 1 for a clean inning.

A split, which isn't the best outcome, but it does mathematically improve our record.

Chicago improves to 500!

I think the real-life Royals only went 3-10 against the Mariners in 1985. I don't even know what else to say about that.

In OOTP I hate it when I'm finally facing a pitcher (like 1985 Mike Langston) my team should rake — and instead we get shut out.

I continue to be amazed at how you're getting quality innings from the zombified left arm of Larry Gura in 1985.

And through all this, you're now only 2 games behind where the real-life Royals were at the same point in their championship season.

I have a feeling the White Sox are going to fold up pretty soon -- as they did in real life. Not that OOTP always follows real life.

Game 61 – June 17th
12 – Minnesota
7 – Royals

WP – John Butcher (2-9)
LP – Bret Saberhagen (6-6)

This one was pretty much lost in the 1st. Saberhagen let the first 5 Twins batters reach base and score. LaCoss pitched a nice 4 1/3 innings of relief giving up no runs.

The offense wasn't a total loss. We plugged away here and there but couldn't flip the score. Balboni hit his 15th.

Game 62 – June 18th
1 – Minnesota
4 – Royals

WP – Charlie Leibrandt (7-6)
LP – Pete Filson (1-2)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (11)

Quiet until the 7th when we strung together a few hits. Orta singled in 1 and Sheridan doubled in 2. Wilson was the only Royal to not get a hit. Leibrandt allowed 4 hits and no walks in 8 innings.

Game 63 – June 19th
6 – Minnesota
5 – Royals

WP – Ron Davis (2-2)
LP – Dan Quisenberry (1-3)
SV – Rick Lysander (1)

Traded the lead back and forth and went into the 9th down a run. Biancalana walked and Greg Pryor singled; then Biancalana scored on a Dave Collins single to send us to extra innings.

Quisenberry came out for his second inning in the 10th, but allowed a leadoff home run to Roy Smalley. Wathan, Orta, and Sundberg all went quietly in the 10th.

Game 64 – June 20th
7 – Minnesota
1 – Royals

WP – Frank Viola (6-8)
LP – Mark Gubicza (6-5)

Viola shut us down except for back-to-back doubles in the first by Wilson and McRae.

-
The Mariners (27-35; 5th) traded their starting second baseman Jack Perconte to the Braves for backup 1B/OF Gerald Perry and a minor league outfielder. Danny Tartabull takes over as the every day second baseman.

The Angels lost SP Mike Witt for the next year. Torn Rotator Cuff. He was 4-2 with a 2.09 ERA. Looks like Bob Kipper is taking his spot in the rotation.

I don't know if I should trust him or not, but Buddy Biancalana is hitting .295 and has an .801 OPS. I think I'm going to get him a few more at bats against Mariners, who are up next.

Man, losing 3 out of 4 to the Twins is a momentum-stopper.

But the real-life Royals got SWEPT in Minnesota in late September of 1985 in the heat of the race, prompting Twins manager Billy Gardner to call the Royals' offense "listless."

Kansas City got the last laugh on Gardner twice. First, by going on to win the 1985 World Series, then by finishing an agonizing two games back of the Twins in 1987. And who was managing the Royals in 1987?

Billy Gardner.

Good luck in Seattle!

Game 65 – June 21st
4 – Seattle
3 – Royals

WP – Jim Beattie (3-2)
LP – Larry Gura (0-3)
SV – Ed Nunez (13)

The Mariners AI must have known what it was doing trading its starting second baseman Perconte. Danny Tartabull, batting cleanup, went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and hit 2 home runs. Gura struck out 7 over 6 innings. A Jerry Royster error gave Gura an unearned run, and with that a quality start. He has 3 in his 4 starts.

Game 66 – June 22nd
1 – Seattle
17 – Royals

WP – Bret Saberhagen (7-6)
LP – Mark Langston (4-6)

Oh my... 17 runs, 15 hits, 4 home runs. Cowens had 4 RBI's on 2 hits, including a 2-run home run. Buddy Freakin' Biancalana hit a grand slam of Karl Best. Wilson was the only Royal to not get a hit, but everyone scored at least once.

Saberhagen had been throwing a touch cold, but threw 8 innings, 7 hits, 0 walks, 6 K's. Huismann struck out the side in the 9th.

Hopefully I didn't spend all the runs today.

Game 67 – June 23rd
1 – Seattle
0 – Royals

WP – Mike Moore (8-5)
LP – Charlie Leibrandt (7-7)

So of course I did. Moore held us to 4 hits and he struck out 6. Leibrandt walked 6, but stranded 10.

I started Biancalana all 3 games at third, shifting Brett to first for the first game and he DH'd the last two games. Trying to get rest by not playing in the field. Buddy was hitting .295 with an 801 OPS, but outside of his grand slam, he didn't do much. His average dropped to .259 and his OPS to 772.

-
Brett is 2nd in the AL with 25 doubles. Wade Boggs has 28.

In All-Star Game voting, Frank White is 3rd and Brett is 3rd as well.

Toronto has 7 on the voting leaderboards; The Yankees have 6.

Game 68 – June 24th
3 – Royals
4 – Minnesota

WP – Dan Quisenberry (1-4)
LP – Ron Davis (3-2)

Tried to get a 2-inning save from Quisenberry, but the heart of the Twins order popped him for 5 hits and 2 runs in the 9th.

Game 69 – June 25th
3 – Royals
15 – Minnesota

WP – Frank Viola (7-8)
LP – Mark Gubicza (6-6)

The less said the better, but Willie Wilson had a 2-run triple, and I designated Mike LaCoss after the game. He gave up 5 of the runs. I promoted lefty Tony Ferreira to his roster spot.

Game 70 – June 26th
1 – Royals
3 – Minnesota

WP – Alan Sontag (5-5)
LP – Larry Gura (0-4)
SV – Ron Davis (12)

One bad inning sunk the game. Gura gave up 6 hits and 3 runs in 6 innings, but all 3 runs in the first. Steve Lombardozzi hit a bases loaded double. The offense sputtered again. Brett had 3 hits, but nothing came of it.

I made 2 moves to address a lack of left handed reliever depth.

First, I signed free agent Joe Sambito to a minor league contract. A top-notch reliever for Houston in the late 70s, he had Tommy John surgery in 83 and hasn't been the same since. Hopefully he can provide depth if needed.

Milwaukee is last in the American League East and going nowhere. I might have gorked the AI a little on this, but I'm 10 games under 500 and I'm not sacrificing the farm.

Two older AAA position players, 1B Jeff Brown and 3B George Foussianes to the Brewers for LRP Bob McClure and LRP Dan Plesac.

McClure has been a lefty specialist for the Brewers, appearing in 20 games with only 7 innings pitched. I'm gonna knock on wood he turns it around. But in his last two appearances, he's faced Cal Ripken, Jesse Barfield and Rance Mulliniks. - 1 lefty.

Plesac has pitched across AA and AAA this year with not much success. 1-1 with an ERA over 6.

Hopefully I can get good results from them, but not a high cost move.

You outscored the Mariners by 14 runs in a 3-game series and went 1-2. Gosh, that would drive me crazy.

Then go on to Seattle and get swept ....

These are the things about piloting the 1985 Royals that drove me to distraction. I'd sit at my computer pleading "Wake up wake up wake up you guys!!"

You're still doing miraculous things with Larry Gura. Just need the hitting to find some kind of consistency. There's still time, and it still seems like no team is in a hurry to win that division. This would be the best time to hit a winning streak, but they need to WAKE UP wake up wake up!

Wake Up!

Shuffling the lineup around a bit for end of June. Of the 9 guys I'm starting Pat Sheridan had the 4th highest OPS, so why not slot him in the cleanup spot.

vs. L is the same except Darryl Motley will be starting in Right.

Game 71 – June 28th
2 – California
1 – Royals

WP – Kirk McCaskill (8-6)
LP – Bret Saberhagen (7-7)
SV – Donnie Moore (10)

Snorrrrre. 8 hits, but we couldn't connect when it mattered. Brett went 0-4 and left 5 on base. Won't sit him or let him bat anywhere else though. Sheridan went 2-4 with the lone RBI.

Game 72 – June 29th
4 – California
5 – Royals

WP – Bud Black (6-4)
LP – Jim Slaton (3-6)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (12)

Collins, Motley, and White all hit solo home runs, and White knocked in 3 all together. Quisenberry gave up a solo shot to Juan Beniquez in the 9th (who also had 4 hits), but we had a 2-run lead so the damage was limited.

Game 73 – June 30th
1 – California
7 – Royals

WP – Charlie Leibrandt (8-7)
LP – Ron Romanick (4-10)

I like the games that manage themselves. Leibrandt walked 5, but only gave up 4 hits and didn't allow much damage, only 1 run and no extra base hits.

Everyone in the lineup got a hit. Collins had 3 with 3 RBI's. Brett had a 2-run homer, his 13th of the season.

-
Houston offered SS Dickie Thon in a trade, and while an intersting idea, they want Steve Farr and I can't move a reliever who's having a semi-acceptable season.

Mark Huismann has struck out 11 in 7 innings. He's also given up 3 home runs.

Top 3 for American League Pitching WAR are Britt, Bert, and Bret...

Game 74 – July 1st
1 – Oakland
5 – Royals

WP – Mark Gubicza (7-6)
LP – Chris Codiroli (4-7)

Cowens went 4-4 with a solo home run from the clean-up spot today – 2 RBI's total. Brett hit a 2-run home run. Gubicza went 8 innings striking out 4.

Went with a straight righty-righty/lefty-lefty matchups for the 9th. Huismann got Dusty Baker; McClure got Bochte, but walked Dwayne Murphy; Farr came in and struck out Dave Kingman for the final out.

Game 75 – July 2nd
1 – Oakland
3 – Royals

WP – Larry Gura (1-4)
LP – Russell Kibler (6-4)
SV – Dan Quisenberry (13)

7 of the first 9 batters reached base in the first and we scored 4 runs. 2 more in the 2nd, and Gura was cruising in the 4th when my computer shut down... blech.

The restart wasn't as successful, but we did score 1 in the first on a Darryl Motley single. The other two runs came from bases loaded walks.

Gura snagged another quality start, 6.2 innings, 4 hits, 2 walks, 4 K's, and nailed down his first win of the season. Quisenberry gave up 2 hits in the ninth but stranded both runners and struck out 2.

Game 76 – July 3rd
2 – Oakland
8 – Royals

WP – Bret Saberhagen (8-7)
LP – Jose Rijo (5-8)

Wilson singled and stole second to lead off the game. Collins followed with a 2-run homer and we didn't look back. Brett did go 0-5 and deserves a day off before the All-Star Break, so probably tomorrow.

Sheridan went 1-4 with a solo home run, and Jorge Orta went 3-4.

Saberhagen walked 1 and allowed 4 hits against 6 K's in 8 innings.

-
Gura hasn't been lights out, but he's keeping us in the games. 6 starts, 5 of quality, and the other was a 4-run in 6 inning outing where he walked 5 and struck out only 1. He has a 3.62 ERA and is 1-3 as a starter.

I might have caught the A's on a downturn, but if someone is, Id like to be that someone!

I like the idea of platooning Sheridan/Motley in RF and at cleanup hitter depending on whether a LHP or RHP is starting.

Somebody has to bat cleanup. I think OOTP likes Motley -- he once hit 32 HRs for me in a 1985 SIM. Sheridan isn't ideal, but he draws walks and gives righties some trouble. Balboni needs to see more fastballs, which is why he's usually more effective when he hits below the middle of the order.

You've won 5 of 6 since making the change, so you might have hit on the sweet spot. There's no way Pat Sheridan would have hit cleanup for any self-respecting MLB team in 1985. But modern MLB teams are re-evaluating the "clean-up" spot, with several putting their best power hitters among the top three slots with contact hitters behind them. Of course, in 2019, we use the term "contact hitter" loosely.

I once got desperate and tried the modern approach with the 1985 Royals. I had Wilson-Brett-Balboni-Sundberg as my top four in the lineup. It was a disaster.

I think once you get the team over .500, you'll pick up even more momentum.
