Awesome. I was lucky enough to watch the first one live from the 1st inning.

Average fastball velocity by innings for Verlander yesterday:
Innings 1-3: 94.4 MPH Innings 4-6: 96.7 MPH Innings 7-9: 99.0 MPH That. Is. Insane. And. Not. Fair. Mix in a nasty slider and a great changeup, and you have a guy throwing a no-no despite not having one of his biggest weapons: his curveball. Wow! I can applaud this kind of greatness despite being on the losing end of it. I've gotta say though, if you want to throw a no-hitter against the Jays, make sure you get the start in the first week of May in years that end in a "1". This seems to be a recurring pattern. Here are the four no-hitters against the Jays in their 34 (this is their 35th season) year history: May 5, 1981: Len Barker (perfect game) June 29, 1990: Dave Stewart May 1, 1991: Nolan Ryan May 7, 2011: Justin Verlander Thank goodness the first week of May is over. See ya in a decade, by which time we'll hopefully be eagerly anticipating the arrival of OOTP 22 (or we'll already have our mitts on it). |

I love multiple no-hitter guys...it's a very exclusive club with some surprise members....like Hideo Nomo and Steve Busby (in consecutive years), and I bet Busby would have had more if not for injuries.

thanks for the list!
I love it! Checking that list...so many great pitchers not on it...the No-Hitter is awfully elusive, and two No-Hitters...well as the list documents....rare indeed. Bob Forsch?....that's awesome....never thought of him having electrifying stuff...yet 2 no-hitters. Forgot about Don Wilson, he had great stuff...not surprised actually by him, he was great. Busby was always my favorite from that list...I was so bummed when arm miseries ended what could have been a HOF career. He was awesome.

Jim Maloney was another HOF caliber pitcher whose career got cut short. He had a legit 98-100 mph fastball.

So much for that. 14 straight innings though - pretty darn impressive.

In my fictional league, Virginia Miners had 3 pitchers combine on a no-hitter against the Georgia Rebels in leagues first ever spring training game.
Edward McPherson, starting pitcher for Virginia in that game, also went out in his 2nd start of the spring and threw another 4 hitless innings against the Maine Loggers (my team..ouch). McPherson bombed in his 3rd start however. Georgia, the victim of the 1st combined no-hitter, then went out in game 2 of the SLCBA and game 2 of the spring and they themselves had 3 pitchers combine on a no-hitter against Illinois - a preseason favorite to win it all. statesleague.com |
