This is a very fair evaluation. Thank you, bbastyr. It is still possible Markus will implement a few enhancements to the PbP and sound in one of the patches. I, personally, will be lobbying for them. As for actual lineups and transactions, we'll probably have to wait for OOTP10.

Nice review. One nit to pick. How many seasons can you play in DMB for $39.99?
If comparisons to DMB are to be made, then the cost of both games must be discussed.

RchW===Nit to pick----if the cost of DMB is going to be discussed, should we not discuss bugs, play by play and how accurately a game reproduces a season? If I wanted to accurately recreate an actual season in baseball I would not use OOTP. I would use DMB or Strat. I want to play year to year, as accurately as possible, therefore I purchase OOTP. OOTP is not the same game as DMB or Strat and it should openly cherish this. That is why I cringe everytime Markus claims that OOTP is the most in-depth historical sim on the market. It is the best in-depth what-if sim on the market. Once you start a historical league it's Katy bar the door, as who knows what will happen.

Interesting review. Not to start a flare-up, though it probably will...I've thought that the fact that Markus spends so much focus on historical replay and "arcadie" types of things rather than online and pure fictional play is missing the opportunity to drive what his game does strongest. OOTP is, to me, the leader in player development/GM simulation. I always think this should be the area that should be the primary focus on every update, but those items are generally buried in the afterwords of new things.

Yeah, I've looked at other sims. Mogul and PureSim I've played. Never got diamond mind. Looked at their web site and just couldn't believe the cost if I wanted several years. Or every year 1901-1975. I left there in a hurry. Wow.

Not picking on anyone in particular, but the allure of a season's replay is lost on me. |

From the OOTP Developments website:
Some of the main features of OOTP include: Multiple styles of play - Mimic real-world baseball. Create a completely fictional baseball world. Perform a historical replay of the 1968 season. Heck, do a combination of all of these! OOTP offers unmatched flexibility in setting up the kind of baseball universe you want. |

I've done historical season replays in OOTP and they were really good before. I'm doing one now, and with all the historical improvements, it's even better.

Replay in the sense of same rosters, etc., but I don't think its meant to mimic a season's stats as closely as that post meant.

Actually, that's user-definable. The leagues I've set up in OOTP9 all have the player pictures, same as in previous versions. Off-hand, I'm not sure where that toggle is, but it must be there somewhere.

The game engine and pbp in this version of OOTP are much improved. IMO, OOTP 9 is ready for prime time for the historical players.
