Career ender to "The Mick"

Mickey Mantle suffered a fractured elbow and ended his career today at the age of 23. In four and a half seasons of big league baseball, Mantle had a .294 career average with 138 home runs and 446 rbi. His career high was 57 HR's in 1953 with a .338 batting average. Farewell Mick. You can never be replaced.

On the flip end - I had Lou Gehrig play until he was 43 and finish 2nd all-time in homers behind the Babe.

I had Ty Cobb go down 2.5 years into his career with a torn back muscle. Finished with 502 hits and a .320 average.

He may come back.

I've seen players hit career-enders and come back later in the season.

Bernie Williams suffered a back career-ending back injury in double A and never played a major league game in my one league!

I would get frustrated at injuries like that and scream at the comp. That is why i don't do historical leagues.

How many did he hit?

See the Historical Sims subforum - Cobb seems to get a lot of CEIs, while the record currently is Hornsby - aged 57, still in the majors.

I had Clemens win the Rookie of the Year and the Cy Young in 84 then pitch a no-hitter opening day of the next season and go down with a career ender his next start.

Yeah can we some verification that some CI's will come back a couple of years later in the new version ... that was a huge addition to 6.5

I mentioned it here:
http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...d.php?t=122209

But I think there are far too many career enders.

Thanks Bear ... that was a very good post ... in past version (even 6.5) alot of times I would edit CEI to 12-18 months gone.

I wish the game would handle it that way and then there could be extensions to the length of time and a small % who never make it back.

Rarely will any sport come out and say it's a career ending injury ... Look at Jason Williams in basketball ... he is attempting a comeback next year after 4 years out.

The number of CEI's in OOTP2006 are way out of whack. When I see a player drop out of the stat leaders, it's almost always due to a CEI rather than a drop in ability or someone else better coming to the team.

I've also mentioned it in 3+ threads. I don't mind the increased number of injuries, but the severity seems a bit.... ummmm.... severe?

Agreed. I wonder if it is something that can be fixed simply by editing the injuries file?

Glad to see I'm not the only one frustrated by this. I started a historical world beginning in 1969 and made myself GM of the Mets. Tommie Agee, at the age of 25, went down with a CEI during spring training. Pretty frustrating. And I had forgotten to save my world as a quickstart once I had all the settings correct and before simming a single day. If I had, I just would've started over. But now I'm stuck without Agee.
