Zach Neto Named American League Player of the Week
Zach Neto was named the American League Player of the Week after a remarkable return from the injured list. Neto wasted little time making up for lost time, batting .591 (13-for-22) over his first week back while adding two home runs, eight RBIs, and consistently igniting the Angels' offense. His immediate impact has helped stabilize a lineup that has been ravaged by injuries to Mike Trout, Oneil Cruz, Nolan Schanuel, and Austin Wells during the season's opening month. "It's good to be back," Neto said after learning of the honor. "Missing games is never easy, so my focus was just on helping the team win. Individual awards are nice, but the goal is to keep this team moving in the right direction."

The award serves as another reminder of his importance to the Angels. After leading the club in home runs and RBIs in 2026, the shortstop has picked up right where he left off, providing energy in the third spot in the lineup and steady defense in the infield. For a team trying to weather a wave of injuries, Neto's return could not have come at a better time.

Around the Majors
The New York Mets strengthened their rotation by signing veteran left-hander Robbie Ray to a one-year, $31.5 million contract. Ray had remained one of the most notable free agents on the market well into the regular season before finally finding a landing spot with the defending World Series champions. The former Cy Young Award winner gives the Mets another experienced arm as they look to defend their title. While the agreement carries a hefty one-year price tag, it avoids a long-term commitment and could prove to be one of the more impactful late free-agent signings if Ray returns to form. For the Mets, it's a low-risk move with potentially high reward as they continue to reinforce an already talented pitching staff.

Meet Jaxon Jelkin: Injuries Have Opened the Door for the Angels' Young Right-Hander
When the Angels selected Jaxon Jelkin in the 2026 MLB Draft, they envisioned him as a pitcher with a bright future. Few expected that future would arrive this quickly. With Tarik Skubal, Shane McClanahan, José Soriano, and Clarke Schmidt all sidelined by injuries, the Angels have turned to the 24-year-old right-hander to help stabilize a rotation that has been decimated less than a month into the season.

For now, the organization plans to give Jelkin every opportunity to prove he belongs as a starting pitcher. "He has the stuff to get major league hitters out," one club official said. "Now it's about showing he can do it every fifth day."

Jelkin's biggest weapon is a lively fastball that routinely sits between 94 and 97 mph and can reach the upper 90s. He pairs it with a sharp slider that has become his primary strikeout pitch and has spent the past year refining a splitter that the Angels believe is good enough to keep opposing hitters from sitting on his fastball.

The raw stuff has never been the question. Consistency has. Like many young power pitchers, Jelkin is still learning to command his arsenal over the course of a six- or seven-inning outing. At times he'll overpower hitters. At others, deep counts and elevated pitch totals can force an early exit.
That's one reason some evaluators projected him as a future late-inning reliever.

The Angels, however, see the potential for more. They believe his athleticism, competitiveness, and improving third pitch give him a legitimate chance to remain in the rotation.

The timing of his opportunity isn't ideal. Rather than breaking into the majors on a club with little to play for, Jelkin joins a team with postseason aspirations that is simply trying to survive an unprecedented run of pitching injuries. There will undoubtedly be growing pains. But there is also opportunity. If Jelkin establishes himself over the next several weeks, he could force the Angels into difficult decisions once Skubal, McClanahan, Soriano, and Schmidt begin returning from the injured list.

For now, the Angels simply need him to give them quality innings while one of the deepest rotations in baseball works its way back to health.

Sometimes, a young pitcher's career begins exactly as planned. Other times, it begins because a team suddenly needs someone to answer the call. For Jaxon Jelkin, that moment has arrived.

Angels Weather Another Injury, Are 13-12
The Angels continue to prove they can absorb adversity. Despite another significant pitching injury and a roster that has been in constant flux, Los Angeles are 13-12 and sit one game ahead of Seattle atop the American League West entering a road series to Oakland. The week featured breakout performances from Angel Martinez, continued excellence from Zach Neto, another strong outing from Reid Detmers, and encouraging starts from two of the organization's youngest pitchers.

April 22 — Angels 14, Twins 1
The Angels exploded for one of their best offensive performances of the season. Angel Martinez enjoyed the game of his career, going 5-for-6. After striking out in his first at-bat, he singled in the second and fourth innings, ripped a two-run double in the fifth, added another single in the seventh, and capped the afternoon with an RBI single in the eighth.

Zach Neto continued his torrid return from the injured list, finishing 4-for-6 with three RBIs, while Luis Matos went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.

Reid Detmers was equally impressive, pitching 7⅓ innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine and walking one.

April 23 — Twins 6, Angels 5
Minnesota scored four runs in the fourth inning to erase an early tie and take control. The Angels answered with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by another home run from Angel Martinez, but couldn't complete the comeback. The tying runners reached base in the ninth before Nolan Schanuel flew out to right field to end the game. George Klassen struggled, allowing all six Minnesota runs in 3⅓ innings, falling to 0-2 on the season.

April 24 — Angels 6, Twins 4
The Angels rallied from another early deficit to win the series. Minnesota jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning against Logan Allen before Los Angeles chipped away.

After scoring twice in the bottom of the first and once in the fifth, the Angels took the lead for good on Nelson Rada's two-run double in the sixth before adding an insurance run an inning later. The victory, however, came with another injury scare. Making his third appearance after being acquired from Toronto, Louie Varland entered to begin the fifth inning but faced only two batters before leaving with elbow pain. Dylan Lee followed with 2⅓ outstanding innings to earn the victory, while Ben Joyce recorded his sixth save.

April 25 — Angels 5, Rangers 3
The Angels opened their series in Texas with another resilient victory. Alex Bregman's two-run single gave Los Angeles a 3-1 lead before Texas battled back to tie the game. Christian Moore answered with a two-run home run in the sixth to put the Angels ahead for good.

Making his first major league start, Jaxon Jelkin showed why the organization is excited about his future. The rookie struck out five while walking just one over 4⅓ innings. He left with two runners aboard, both of whom eventually scored after Mason Montgomery entered in relief, leaving Jelkin charged with three earned runs.

April 26 — Rangers 4, Angels 2
Caden Dana delivered the best start of his young major league career. The rookie carried a strong outing into the seventh inning before Adolis García tied the game with a home run. The decisive inning unraveled after Jake Burger reached on Alex Bregman's throwing error. Dylan Lee relieved Dana, but Vinnie Pasquantino followed with the go-ahead hit. Dana was charged with the loss despite another encouraging performance.

April 27 — Angels 4, Rangers 0
Reid Detmers continued his outstanding start to the season. The left-hander improved to 4-2, tossing six shutout innings while allowing four hits, walking two, and striking out four. Jhonkensy Noel hit his fifth home run of the season in the second inning before Nolan Schanuel's two-run double in the eighth provided breathing room. Jeremiah Estrada and José Fermín combined to finish the shutout, with Fermín earning the save.

Injury Updates
The Angels' pitching staff suffered yet another setback. Tests revealed bone chips in Louie Varland's elbow, an injury expected to sideline the right-hander for six to eight weeks. To replace him on the active roster, the Angels recalled Victor Mederos from Triple-A Salt Lake.

There was better news elsewhere. Mike Trout was activated from the injured list and immediately rejoins the middle of the Angels' lineup. The corresponding roster move was a difficult one. With Trout returning and Luis Matos out of minor league options, the Angels designated Matos for assignment.

Veteran Rotation Depth Added
Recognizing the strain injuries have placed on the pitching staff, the Angels also signed veteran right-hander Doug Peterson to a minor league contract. Peterson went 9-8 with a 4.01 ERA for the Mets last season and provides experienced organizational depth while several starters continue working their way back from injury.

Looking Ahead
Despite losing Tarik Skubal, Shane McClanahan, José Soriano, Clarke Schmidt, Louie Varland, Mike Trout, Austin Wells, and others for varying stretches already this season, the Angels have managed to climb above .500. At 13-12, they hold a one-game lead over Seattle in the American League West as they head to Oakland to close out the month. Considering everything they've endured, the Angels have reason to believe their best baseball still lies ahead—especially as several key contributors inch closer to full health.

Editorial: This Angels Team Has Grit—and It Refuses to Fold
It's only April.

Normally, a 13-12 record wouldn't warrant much excitement. But context matters. No team in baseball has had to overcome more adversity during the season's first month than the Angels. Before May even arrives, they've lost Tarik Skubal, Shane McClanahan, José Soriano, Clarke Schmidt, Mike Trout, Oneil Cruz, Austin Wells, Nolan Schanuel, Zach Neto, and Louie Varland for varying lengths of time. Nearly every cornerstone of the roster has spent time on the injured list.

Many clubs would have folded. The Angels haven't. Instead, they've found ways to win. When Mike Trout went down, Angel Martinez stepped forward. When Zach Neto returned, he immediately became the hottest hitter in baseball, earning American League Player of the Week honors. When the rotation was decimated, Reid Detmers pitched like an ace. George Klassen, Caden Dana, and Jaxon Jelkin accepted responsibilities far sooner than anyone expected. When the bullpen needed innings, Dylan Lee, José Fermín, Mason Montgomery, Ben Joyce, and Jeremiah Estrada answered the call.

Night after night, someone different has become the hero. That says something about a clubhouse. Championship teams rarely avoid adversity. Instead, they survive it. The Angels aren't winning because everything has gone according to plan. They're winning because they've refused to let setbacks define them.

There have been heartbreaking losses. Blown leads. Defensive mistakes. Injuries that would cripple most contenders. Yet each time they've been knocked down, they've gotten back up. At times, this team has looked battered. It has never looked beaten.

That attitude starts with the manager, whose steady hand has kept the clubhouse focused despite the constant roster turnover. It extends to veterans like Alex Bregman and Mike Trout, and to young players like Zach Neto, Nolan Schanuel, Christian Moore, and Angel Martinez, who have embraced larger roles when called upon.

The Angels have not played perfect baseball. In fact, there are legitimate concerns. Christian Moore's defense remains inconsistent. The rotation is held together by little more than determination. The bullpen has been stretched beyond what anyone envisioned on Opening Day. But no one inside the clubhouse is making excuses. They're simply finding ways to compete.

Perhaps that's what stands out most. This team has perseverance. It has grit. And maybe, just maybe, those qualities will matter as much as talent over the next five months.

The Angels know reinforcements are coming. Skubal, Soriano, McClanahan, Schmidt, Cruz, and Wells will all return at some point. If this club can remain in the race until then, the resilience it has shown during April may ultimately become the foundation for something much bigger.

The standings say the Angels are just one game over .500. Anyone who has watched them this month knows they're far more than that.

Angels Recall Victor Mederos to Bolster Pitching Staff
With Louie Varland heading to the injured list, the Angels have turned to another young arm, recalling Victor Mederos from Triple-A Salt Lake. The 24-year-old right-hander has been one of the organization's more intriguing pitching prospects since being selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Oklahoma State. Mederos features a lively mid-to-upper-90s fastball and a sharp slider capable of missing bats. While his command has been inconsistent at times, the Angels believe his power arsenal gives him the potential to contribute at the major league level.

Initially, Mederos is expected to provide length out of the bullpen and give the team another multi-inning option while the club continues to deal with injuries throughout its pitching staff. With Tarik Skubal, Shane McClanahan, José Soriano, Clarke Schmidt, and now Louie Varland all sidelined, Mederos becomes the latest young pitcher to receive an opportunity as the club tries to stay atop the American League West. "We've liked Victor's progress," general manager Andy Cardinal said. "He's earned this opportunity, and we're excited to see what he can do."

Tarik Skubal Suffers Minor Setback in Rehab, Angels Still Target Early June Return
The Angels received discouraging—but not alarming—news regarding ace Tarik Skubal's recovery. After making steady progress from the elbow strain he suffered during spring training, Skubal has experienced a minor setback in his rehabilitation and will be shut down from throwing for one week, the club announced. Team trainer Nick Kenney said the setback was not the result of a new injury, but rather of Skubal pushing his recovery too aggressively. "Tarik has been progressing well, but he probably tried to do a little too much, a little too soon," Kenney said. "This is more of a precaution than anything else. We want to make sure he's completely recovered before we ramp him back up."

Before the setback, Skubal had been nearing the point where the Angels expected to send him to Triple-A Salt Lake to begin a rehab assignment. Because he faced only three batters during spring training before suffering the injury, the organization believes he will require a relatively lengthy rehab assignment to rebuild his pitch count and overall conditioning before returning to the major leagues.

General manager Andy Cardinal said the club remains optimistic about Skubal's long-term outlook. "We're not going to rush him," Cardinal said. "Our priority is having Tarik healthy for the long haul, not just getting him back as quickly as possible. If that means waiting another week now, it's well worth it."

Despite the delay, club officials continue to believe Skubal can return to the Angels' rotation around June 1, assuming there are no further setbacks. His return would provide a major boost to a pitching staff that has already lost José Soriano, Shane McClanahan, Clarke Schmidt, and Louie Varland to injuries during the season's first month. For now, however, the Angels will continue relying on their organizational depth while their prized offseason acquisition takes one more cautious step toward his debut in Anaheim.

Angels Claim Anthony Nunez Off Waivers, Place Reliever on Injured List
The Angels have continued to stockpile pitching depth, claiming right-handed reliever Anthony Nunez off waivers from the Detroit Tigers. Nunez will immediately be placed on the injured list as he continues to recover from an elbow strain suffered during the first week of the season.

The move is a low-risk gamble on a pitcher the Angels believe has the potential to contribute later this year. "We've liked Anthony for a while," general manager Andy Cardinal said. "This was an opportunity to acquire a talented arm without giving up any players. We think he has a chance to help us once he's healthy."

Nunez split the 2026 season between Triple-A Norfolk in the Orioles organization and Triple-A Toledo after being traded to Detroit as part of the Parker Meadows deal at the July trade deadline. In 57 appearances between the two clubs, Nunez posted an 8-6 record with 11 saves and a 3.41 ERA, establishing himself as one of the better relief arms at the Triple-A level. Detroit had hoped to sneak Nunez through waivers while creating room on its 40-man roster, but the Angels quickly submitted a claim.

The acquisition fits a recent pattern for the Angels, who have aggressively sought bullpen depth following a rash of pitching injuries. With Tarik Skubal, Shane McClanahan, José Soriano, Clarke Schmidt, and Louie Varland all sidelined at various points this season, the organization has made adding controllable pitching a priority. Although Nunez won't be available immediately, the Angels are optimistic he can return later this season. If healthy, the 25-year-old could give Los Angeles another power arm capable of contributing in the middle or late innings as the club continues its push in the American League West.

Angels Drop Four Straight Despite Reinforcements; Skubal Set to Begin Rehab Assignment
The Angels entered the week believing the return of several key players would provide a spark. Instead, they limp into a series against the White Sox having lost four consecutive games, falling to 15-16 on the season. There was, however, one encouraging development. The club announced Sunday that Tarik Skubal is expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake next week, putting the ace one step closer to his long-awaited Angels debut.

April 29 — Angels 8, Athletics 5 (10 innings)
The Angels opened the series with an extra-inning victory behind Alex Bregman's bat. Bregman hit a two-run homer in the first inning and drove in two more in the second as Los Angeles built a 4-0 lead. Logan Allen turned in another solid outing, allowing two runs on four hits over five innings, striking out five while walking three.

Oakland chipped away, scoring in the seventh before tying the game in the eighth. In the tenth, Angel Martinez doubled home the go-ahead run before Zach Neto crushed a three-run homer to put the game away.

April 30 — Angels 5, Athletics 1
Austin Hedges supplied the offense, driving home two runs with a double to break a scoreless tie. The bigger story was rookie Jaxon Jelkin. Making just his second major league start, Jelkin was outstanding, tossing five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, striking out seven, and walking none to earn the first victory of his major league career.

May 1 — Athletics 10, Angels 2
Clarke Schmidt returned from the injured list and understandably looked rusty. He left after five innings with the game tied 1-1, but Oakland erupted for six runs in the eighth inning to turn a close contest into a rout.

May 3 — Guardians 6, Angels 2
After an off day, the Angels opened a three-game series against Cleveland. Former Angel Taylor Ward homered in the third inning before the Guardians added two more runs in the fourth. Left-hander Joey Cantillo kept the Angels' offense quiet as Cleveland handed Los Angeles its second straight defeat.

May 4 — Guardians 6, Angels 3
Taylor Ward continued to torment his former club. Ward doubled home a run in the first inning before hitting a two-run homer in the third against José Soriano, who was making his return from the injured list. Soriano allowed six runs in five innings, and Cleveland completed another series victory.

May 5 — Guardians 5, Angels 4
Jaxon Jelkin continued to impress despite taking a no-decision. The rookie shut Cleveland down for four innings before tiring in the fifth, leaving with the Angels holding a 3-2 lead. Los Angeles added an insurance run in the sixth, but the bullpen couldn't hold it. Cleveland scored three runs off Mason Montgomery in the seventh inning, with Chase DeLauter delivering the decisive two-run single. The Guardians held on to complete the sweep.

Roster Moves
The Angels welcomed back several key contributors during the week. Clarke Schmidt, José Soriano, and Austin Wells were all activated from the injured list. To make room, the club optioned George Klassen, Victor Mederos, and Diego Cartaya to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Although Cartaya returns to the minors, team officials came away encouraged by his brief stint in the majors. The organization believes the young catcher continues to make significant strides, particularly with his approach at the plate and overall confidence.

Skubal Nearing Return
Perhaps the biggest news of the week came Sunday when the Angels announced that Tarik Skubal will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Salt Lake next week. Because Skubal faced only three batters during spring training before suffering his elbow strain, the club expects him to make several rehab starts as he rebuilds his pitch count.
If all goes according to plan, the Angels still hope to have their ace back in the major league rotation around the beginning of June.

Looking Ahead
The Angels have weathered one of the most injury-riddled starts to a season in recent memory, but the recent losing streak has highlighted just how much they have missed their frontline talent. Now sitting at 15-16, Los Angeles welcomes the Chicago White Sox to Anaheim hoping to reverse its fortunes.

With Schmidt, Soriano, and Wells back—and Skubal finally nearing his return—the Angels are optimistic that healthier days are ahead.

Angels Regain Their Footing, Win Four of Six as Oneil Cruz Returns
After a five-game losing streak, the Angels responded with an encouraging week, winning four of their next five games to improve to 19-18, just one game behind Seattle in the American League West. Perhaps even more encouraging, reinforcements continue to arrive. Oneil Cruz returned from the injured list, while ace Tarik Skubal made his first rehab start at Triple-A Salt Lake.

May 6 — White Sox 4, Angels 2
George Valera's fourth-inning home run tied the game at two, and Clarke Schmidt turned in another solid outing. The game remained deadlocked until the seventh inning when Miguel Vargas singled to begin the rally. After Dylan Lee entered in relief, Randy Arozarena doubled home Vargas with the go-ahead run as Chicago went on to claim the opener.

May 7 — Angels 5, White Sox 2
Zach Neto wasted little time putting the Angels in control. His three-run homer in the first inning gave Los Angeles an early lead before the club added two more runs in the fifth. Caden Dana continued to show encouraging signs, carrying a shutout into the fifth inning before Randy Arozarena's two-run single finally broke through. Dana finished with 5⅔ innings, allowing just two runs on two hits to earn his first victory of the season. The bullpen took over from there, preserving the lead as Ben Joyce recorded his seventh save.

May 8 — Angels 4, White Sox 3 (11 innings)
The Angels capped the series with a dramatic walk-off victory. Locked in a 2-2 tie after nine innings, both teams scored in the tenth before Austin Wells delivered the decisive RBI double in the bottom of the 11th, sending the Angels into their off day with a much-needed series win.

May 10 — Marlins 9, Angels 3
Miami welcomed the Angels by roughing up rookie Jaxon Jelkin. Making his fourth major league start, Jelkin allowed six runs on ten hits in 3⅔ innings. Marco Luciano led the Marlins' offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs as Miami pulled away.

May 11 — Angels 5, Marlins 2
Despite Clarke Schmidt struggling with his command, the Angels bounced back. Schmidt walked five and lasted only four innings, but Los Angeles erased an early 2-0 deficit with a five-run second inning. Angel Martinez started the rally with an RBI single before Austin Hedges delivered a two-run double to put the Angels ahead. Nelson Rada later added an RBI single to cap the inning.

The story afterward was Brayan Bello. Working in relief of Schmidt, Bello dominated for three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four to earn his second victory of the season. José Ferrer closed out the win for the save.

May 12 — Angels 4, Marlins 0
José Soriano threw five scoreless innings, allowing little hard contact while striking out seven. Austin Wells drove in the game's first run with an RBI single in the opening inning before adding a solo home run in the eighth. Owen Miller provided insurance with a two-run triple in the ninth. Ben Joyce entered during an eighth-inning threat and finished the game, recording his eighth save of the season.

Cruz Returns, Skubal Takes Another Step
The Angels received another boost before leaving Miami. Oneil Cruz was activated from the injured list after recovering from his sprained ankle. To make room on the roster, the Angels optioned Nelson Rada to Triple-A Salt Lake, where he is expected to continue receiving everyday at-bats rather than serve in a reserve role in Anaheim.

There was more good news on the pitching front. Tarik Skubal made his first rehabilitation start at Salt Lake, throwing four scoreless innings as he continues to build toward his long-awaited Angels debut. The club remains hopeful Skubal can rejoin the major league rotation around the beginning of June.

Looking Ahead
At 19-18, the Angels have once again climbed above .500 despite spending much of the season without several key contributors. Now comes another important test as they travel to Toronto. With Cruz back, Skubal progressing, and the club beginning to regain its health, the Angels finally appear to be moving in the right direction after surviving one of the most injury-filled opening months in recent memory.

Skubal is making $53 million per yea. I offered $45, then $50. I wasn't going past $55. Ironically the Rockies seemed the only other team really interested that I know of.

I've also still got Trout on a huge contract and Bregman is in the 2nd year of his deal, making $27.2 million. Although I signed Neto, Wells, Detmers, and Soriano to long term deals they are relatively modest. Most of the others are at or near minimum.

Total payroll is $200 million, but jumps to $250 next season and over $300 the following season, so some creativity is probably needed moving forward.

Angels Acquire Marcelo Mayer, Betting a Change of Scenery Can Unlock Former Top Prospect
May 19 -- The Angels have made their first significant in-season move, acquiring infielder Marcelo Mayer from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for pitching prospect Dylan Jordan and catching prospect Juan Flores. The deal represents a calculated gamble by the Angels on a player who, not long ago, was regarded as one of baseball's premier prospects.

Mayer has struggled to establish himself in Boston, batting just .197 with no home runs and six RBIs this season. Once viewed as a cornerstone of the Red Sox' future, the 23-year-old had clearly fallen out of the club's long-term plans, creating an opportunity for the Angels to buy low.

The Angels believe Mayer's value extends beyond his offensive numbers. For much of the season, the club has searched for ways to improve its infield defense. Defensive lapses at second and third base have extended innings, contributed to unearned runs, and at times placed unnecessary pressure on a pitching staff already battling a rash of injuries. Mayer immediately gives the team another quality defender capable of playing shortstop or third base and provides additional flexibility throughout the infield.

The organization is also betting that a fresh start will allow Mayer to rediscover the talent that once made him one of the game's elite prospects.
"We're acquiring a player we believe still has tremendous upside," general manager Andy Cardinal said. "Sometimes a change of scenery is all a young player needs. Marcelo has always had the tools, and we think our coaching staff can help him put everything together."

Exactly how Mayer fits into the everyday lineup remains to be seen. The Angels have not yet announced a corresponding roster move, nor have they indicated how playing time will be divided among Mayer, Christian Moore, Alex Bregman, Zach Neto, Nolan Schanuel, and Owen Miller. One thing is certain, however. The Angels did not make this trade simply to add depth. They believe Marcelo Mayer can become an important part of their future. Mayer is expected to join the club in time for its upcoming Freeway Series against the Dodgers, where he could make his Angels debut.

Angels Sweep Toronto, Lose Series to Brewers as Dodgers Series Looms
Following an up-and-down start to the season, Los Angeles put together a strong week, sweeping a three-game series in Toronto before dropping two games to the Milwaukee Brewers, who have the best record in baseball. The Angels now sit at 23-20, remaining firmly in the hunt in the American League West as they prepare for a highly anticipated Freeway Series against the Dodgers.

May 13 — Angels 9, Blue Jays 8
The Angels overcame an early deficit to open the Toronto series with an exciting comeback victory. Caden Dana struggled early as the Blue Jays built a 7-4 lead by the third inning and still led 8-4 after five. Los Angeles responded with a five-run sixth inning. Zach Neto delivered the go-ahead RBI single and finished 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. José Fermín earned the victory in relief, while José Ferrer recorded his second save.

May 14 — Angels 6, Blue Jays 5
The Angels made it two straight comeback wins. Owen Miller went 3-for-4 with a home run, while Oneil Cruz and Jhonkensy Noel also homered. After Toronto tied the game with two runs in the eighth inning, Nolan Schanuel lined a go-ahead RBI single in the ninth. Ferrer picked up the win, and Ben Joyce closed out the game for his ninth save.

May 15 — Angels 12, Blue Jays 6
The Angels completed the sweep with another offensive explosion. Chandler Simpson's two-run triple highlighted the third inning before Angel Martinez crushed a three-run homer in the fourth. When Toronto tied the game at six, the Angels immediately answered with a six-run fifth inning. Christian Moore's two-run double gave Los Angeles the lead for good.
Martinez finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Simpson collected three hits and drove in three. Brayan Bello earned his third victory after another outstanding relief appearance.

May 17 — Brewers 16, Angels 7
The Brewers, owners of the best record in baseball, showed why. Milwaukee blasted seven home runs, including two by Jake Bauers, who drove in six runs. William Contreras added a 5-for-6 performance as the Brewers overwhelmed the Angels early. Oneil Cruz and George Valera homered late for Los Angeles, but the game was never truly competitive.

May 18 — Angels 6, Brewers 0
The Angels bounced back behind a dominant outing from José Soriano. Soriano threw six scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out ten.
Chandler Simpson hit the first leadoff home run of his major league career, Mike Trout added an RBI single, and Austin Wells drove in two with a double as the Angels evened the series.

May 19 — Brewers 7, Angels 2
Oneil Cruz's two-run double tied the game in the fourth inning, but Milwaukee answered immediately. The Brewers scored the go-ahead run in the fifth after Reid Detmers left the game with an apparent injury and gradually pulled away to take the series.

Roster and Injury Updates
The Angels are awaiting further evaluation on Reid Detmers after he exited their last game. The club also finalized its roster move following the acquisition of Marcelo Mayer, optioning Angel Martinez to Triple-A Salt Lake. Martinez played an important role during the club's injury-plagued first two months, but with Mayer arriving and Oneil Cruz healthy again, the Angels chose to send him back to Triple-A to continue receiving regular playing time.

There was encouraging news on Tarik Skubal. The left-hander made two additional rehab starts at Triple-A Salt Lake, most recently pitching seven innings, and remains on track for a return in the coming weeks. The Angels continue to emphasize they will not rush their prized offseason acquisition.

The news was not as positive for Louie Varland. The right-hander has not responded well to treatment for the bone chips in his elbow and is now expected to miss at least another three months, with a return before September considered unlikely.

Looking Ahead
The schedule doesn't get any easier. The Angels now welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers to Anaheim for the first Freeway Series of the season. With Marcelo Mayer expected to join the club and Tarik Skubal inching closer to his return, the Angels hope to build momentum in one of the biggest series on their schedule.

Reid Detmers Headed to Injured List; George Klassen Recalled
The Angels' battered starting rotation has suffered another setback. The club announced that Reid Detmers will miss 4-5 weeks after being diagnosed with back spasms sustained during his start against Milwaukee. To take his place on the active roster, the Angels have recalled right-hander George Klassen from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Detmers had been one of the steadiest members of the rotation before the injury, posting a 4-3 record with a 3.71 ERA in 10 starts. The left-hander provided much-needed stability while the Angels navigated a seemingly endless wave of injuries to their pitching staff.

His absence continues a remarkable run of misfortune for the club. With Detmers now joining the injured list, every projected member of the Angels' Opening Day rotation has spent time on the injured list this season.
  • Tarik Skubal suffered an elbow strain during spring training and is currently nearing the end of his rehab assignment.
  • José Soriano missed time with recurring elbow soreness before returning.
  • Shane McClanahan remains sidelined with a shoulder injury.
  • Clarke Schmidt missed time earlier this season because of back tightness.
  • Reid Detmers now joins the list with his back injury.

Despite the constant turnover, the Angels have remained in the American League West race thanks to strong performances from their bullpen and the emergence of young starters. Klassen now receives another opportunity after beginning the season in the Angels' rotation before being optioned to Salt Lake when several veterans returned from the injured list. One of the organization's top pitching prospects, Klassen impressed with his poise despite mixed results during his first taste of the major leagues.

The Angels are hopeful Detmers' injury will not require a longer absence, while the impending return of Skubal should help offset the loss in the coming weeks.
For now, however, the club will once again rely on its organizational depth as it attempts to weather yet another blow to a rotation that has endured more than its share of adversity through the season's first seven weeks.

Angels Finish 3-4 Stretch, Remain in AL West Race as Tarik Skubal Nears Return
The Angels had an up and down week against two of baseball's best clubs, taking two of three from the Dodgers before dropping three of four in Houston. Despite the mixed results, Los Angeles remains firmly in the American League West race at 26-24, trailing Seattle (28-22) by two games and sitting a half game behind Houston (27-24). Perhaps the biggest news came away from the major league club, where Tarik Skubal moved another step closer to making his long-awaited Angels debut.

May 20 — Angels 8, Dodgers 5
The Dodgers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but Oneil Cruz immediately answered with a two-run home run in the bottom half. Jaxon Jelkin settled down after the rocky first and kept the Angels in the game. Cruz struck again in the sixth, delivering a game-tying two-run triple. The Angels took the lead for good in the seventh when Marcelo Mayer collected his first hit as an Angel, lining an RBI single to put Los Angeles ahead 5-4.
The Angels added three insurance runs in the eighth to secure the victory.

May 21 — Dodgers 17, Angels 7
One night after defeating the Dodgers, the Angels were overwhelmed. Los Angeles was tied 2-2 before the Dodgers erupted for 15 runs over the final four innings, including four in the sixth, eight in the seventh, and three more in the eighth. José Fermín surrendered six runs in one inning, while Logan Allen allowed six more in 1⅓ innings. With the game out of hand, Owen Miller made the first pitching appearance of his major league career, walking one batter while recording the final outs. The loss became even more costly when Mike Trout left the game in the fifth inning after suffering an injury while running the bases.

May 22 — Angels 3, Dodgers 1
Clarke Schmidt turned in one of his best performances of the season. The right-hander allowed just one run on three hits over eight innings, completely shutting down a dangerous Dodgers lineup. After the game was tied 1-1, George Valera delivered the biggest hit of the night, lining a two-run single off Blake Snell in the sixth inning. Ben Joyce closed out the ninth for his 10th save of the season.

After the game the Angels optioned Fermin and Allen to AAA and recalled Sam Bachman and Victor Mederos.

May 23 — Astros 5, Angels 2
The Angels erased an early deficit when RBI singles by Zach Neto and Oneil Cruz tied the game in the fourth inning. The game remained even until the eighth, when Yordan Alvarez blasted a three-run home run off Jeremiah Estrada to give Houston the lead for good.

May 24 — Astros 7, Angels 2
Austin Wells gave the Angels an early lead with a solo home run in the first. Houston answered in the second, scoring four runs against Jaxon Jelkin. Thanks to two Angels errors, all four runs were unearned. The Astros added three more in the third and cruised to the victory. One bright spot came from Victor Mederos, who delivered an excellent relief appearance before leaving with a wrist injury.

May 25 — Angels 9, Astros 4
George Klassen earned his first victory of the season in impressive fashion.
The rookie right-hander fired five scoreless innings, allowing four hits while striking out eight. The offense provided plenty of support. George Valera drove home the first run with an RBI single in the second before Oneil Cruz launched a two-run homer in the third. Zach Neto followed with a two-run homer in the fifth, while Cruz added a two-run single during a three-run seventh inning.

May 26 — Astros 4, Angels 1
Carlos Rodón dominated the Angels, who managed only a sacrifice fly by Austin Wells in the eighth inning. Caden Dana pitched effectively enough to keep Los Angeles within striking distance, but the offense never found an answer against the veteran left-hander.

Injury Updates
The Angels received encouraging news on Victor Mederos. Examinations revealed that his wrist injury is not serious, and the club expects him to be available when the Angels open their upcoming home series against Colorado.

There was even better news regarding Tarik Skubal. The ace completed his fourth rehab start at Triple-A Salt Lake, pitching 7⅓ scoreless innings. Through four rehabilitation outings, Skubal is 2-1 with a 2.19 ERA in 24⅔ innings. The Angels have indicated they would like Skubal to make one additional rehab start before activating him, suggesting his long-awaited debut in an Angels uniform is now just around the corner.

Mayer Already Changing the Infield
The arrival of Marcelo Mayer has already begun to reshape the Angels' defensive alignment. Since joining the club, Mayer has started at second base, providing the steady glove and range the team hoped to add when it acquired him from Boston. It has also allowed them to move Moore around the diamond and into the outfield. Since Mayer's arrival, Moore has seen time at first base, left field, and right field, allowing the club to keep his bat in the lineup while reducing the defensive pressure that accompanied his everyday role at second. The Angels view the arrangement as an opportunity to maximize the strengths of both players. Mayer strengthens the club's infield defense, while Moore's athleticism and offensive upside give them another versatile option as the club continues searching for its best lineup.

Looking Ahead
The Angels return home to face the Colorado Rockies looking to build momentum before the calendar turns to June. With Skubal nearly ready to return, Marcelo Mayer settling into the infield, and the club still within striking distance in the division despite a seemingly endless list of injuries, the Angels remain very much in the American League West race.

Mike Trout to Miss 6-8 Weeks with Torn Hamstring; Angels Recall Angel Martinez
The Angels' injury-plagued season took another devastating turn Tuesday. The club announced that Mike Trout has suffered a torn hamstring and is expected to miss 6-8 weeks. To fill his spot on the active roster, the Angels recalled Angel Martinez from Triple-A Salt Lake.

The injury is another major setback for Trout, who had been enjoying one of his better stretches of the season before going down. His absence leaves another significant hole in the middle of the Angels' lineup and forces the team to once again reshuffle both his batting order and outfield alignment.

Martinez returns after a brief stint at Salt Lake, where he continued to receive regular at-bats following his option when the Angels acquired infielder Marcelo Mayer. The versatile switch-hitter made a strong impression earlier this season, providing timely offense while playing virtually every position on the field except pitcher and catcher. His defensive flexibility gives the Angels several options as they attempt to replace Trout's production.

The injury also creates additional opportunities for George Valera, who should see increased playing time in right field, while Oneil Cruz, Chandler Simpson and now Christian Moore will continue to anchor the outfield.

For the Angels, the timing could hardly be worse. Trout joins an ever-growing injured list that has already included every member of the club's projected Opening Day rotation at one point this season. Despite those setbacks, Los Angeles has remained in the thick of the American League West race, relying on organizational depth and contributions from young players to stay competitive.

Now the Angels must do it again. With Trout expected to be sidelined until at least mid-to-late July, the club will look to Martinez, Valera, and the rest of its young core to help carry the offense while one of the game's greatest players works his way back once more.

Angels Claim Quinn Priester, Seranthony Domínguez Off Waivers in Bullpen Shakeup
The Angels continued to reshape their pitching staff on Tuesday, claiming right-hander Quinn Priester off waivers from the Detroit Tigers and right-hander Seranthony Domínguez off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies. To make room on the active roster, the Angels optioned Victor Mederos and Sam Bachman to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Priester, a former first-round pick of the Pirates, arrived in Detroit as part of the Colt Keith trade with Milwaukee this past offseason. Once regarded as one of baseball's top pitching prospects, Priester features a deep four-pitch mix built around a sinking fastball and an excellent curveball. While he has yet to fully realize his potential in the major leagues, the Angels believe his ability to generate ground balls and throw multiple quality pitches makes him an intriguing reclamation project. This season, Priester was 1-4 with a 5.58 ERA in 10 appearances, including four starts, before the Tigers designated him for assignment. The Angels plan to use him primarily out of the bullpen, where they hope his stuff will play up in shorter outings.

The club also added an experienced late-inning arm by claiming Seranthony Domínguez. Domínguez burst onto the scene with Philadelphia in 2018, quickly establishing himself as one of baseball's hardest-throwing relievers. Armed with an upper-90s fastball and a sharp slider, he has spent much of his career pitching in high-leverage situations. Although injuries have interrupted his career at times, he has remained an effective bullpen piece when healthy. This season, Domínguez posted a 4.19 ERA in 19 appearances with the Phillies before being placed on waivers.

The Angels hope a change of scenery will help both pitchers. For Priester, the organization sees untapped upside in a former elite prospect who has never found consistent success in the majors. For Domínguez, they are acquiring a veteran reliever with late-inning experience and swing-and-miss stuff who could quickly become a valuable piece of the bullpen if he returns to form. With the season entering June, the Angels continue to aggressively search for pitching depth as they attempt to remain in contention despite a season filled with injuries.

Angels Finish .500 Through Two Months, Welcome Back Tarik Skubal
The Angels closed out May with another frustrating stretch of close losses, finishing the month at 28-28. Despite playing competitive baseball, Los Angeles dropped four of its last six games and now trails Houston by 4½ games in the American League West. There was, however, one significant piece of good news: After missing the first two months of the season with an elbow strain, Tarik Skubal has been activated from the injured list and is scheduled to make his Angels debut in the series opener against Tampa Bay.

May 27 — Rockies 10, Angels 9 (10 innings)
The Angels authored one of their biggest comebacks of the season but could not finish it. Colorado raced to a 6-2 lead after two innings against Clarke Schmidt, who endured his worst outing of the season, allowing six runs (five earned) in just 1⅔ innings. The bullpen kept the Angels in the game. Making his Angels debut, Quinn Priester was outstanding, tossing 4⅓ scoreless innings in relief and giving the offense a chance to rally. Los Angeles scored three runs in the third, another in the fourth, and tied the game in the sixth before Christian Moore launched a three-run homer in the seventh to give the Angels a 9-6 lead.

The Rockies rallied in the ninth against Ben Joyce, ending his streak of 24 consecutive save opportunities converted. In the tenth, Keston Hiura delivered the game-winning RBI single off Jeremiah Estrada.

Alex Bregman led the offense, going 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs.

May 28 — Angels 8, Rockies 5
The Angels bounced back behind another productive night from their offense. Zach Neto's two-run homer highlighted a four-run fourth inning before Nolan Schanuel added a home run in the eighth. Schanuel finished 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while José Soriano earned the victory after allowing three runs over five innings.

May 29 — Angels 5, Rockies 1
Jaxon Jelkin continued to impress. The rookie right-hander allowed just one run on four hits over 5⅓ innings, striking out seven while walking three to improve to 2-2. Austin Wells and Zach Neto both homered as the Angels secured another series victory.

May 30 — Rangers 6, Angels 5 (10 innings)
Christian Moore delivered another clutch swing, crushing a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to tie the game at four. The celebration was short-lived. Adolis García answered with a two-run homer off Ben Joyce in the tenth, and although the Angels scored once in the bottom half, they came up one run short.

May 31 — Rangers 5, Angels 4
Caden Dana pitched effectively before tiring in the fifth inning. Ryan Jeffers' three-run homer gave Texas a 5-1 advantage, but the Angels battled back with single runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Zach Neto grounded into a game-ending double play, leaving the tying run at third base.

June 1 — Rangers 4, Angels 2 (10 innings)
The Angels wasted another outstanding start from Clarke Schmidt. After Los Angeles carried a late lead into the ninth, Texas tied the game against José Ferrer before scoring twice in the tenth inning to complete a three-game sweep. The loss dropped the Angels back to .500 and capped a frustrating series in which they repeatedly found themselves just a play or two away from victory.

Skubal Finally Ready
The biggest news came after the game. The Angels officially activated Tarik Skubal from the injured list following five successful rehabilitation starts. He scheduled to make his long-awaited Angels debut in the opener of the upcoming series against Tampa Bay. To clear a roster spot, the Angels optioned rookie George Klassen to Triple-A Salt Lake.

For a club that has spent much of the first two months simply trying to survive injuries, Skubal's return could not come at a better time. Now sitting at 28-28, the Angels hope the addition of one of baseball's premier left-handers will provide the spark they need to climb back into the American League West race.

Tarik Skubal Dominates in Angels Debut as Austin Wells Belts Three Home Runs
The wait was worth it.

Making his long-awaited Angels debut after missing the first two months of the season with an elbow strain, Tarik Skubal looked every bit like the ace Los Angeles envisioned when it signed him over the winter. The left-hander struck out 13 over six brilliant innings as the Angels defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 6-1, opening an important homestand with an emphatic victory.

If Skubal supplied the pitching, Austin Wells supplied the power. The All-Star catcher blasted three home runs, accounting for five RBIs and turning in one of the finest offensive performances of his career.

The Angels struck first in the opening inning when Wells drove a solo homer to right-center for his seventh of the season, giving Skubal an early lead.

Skubal retired the Rays in order in the second and third innings, then completely overpowered Tampa Bay's lineup during the middle innings. He struck out the side in the fourth before escaping the fifth by fanning Christopher Morel with a runner aboard. His only blemish came in the sixth when Josh Lowe connected for a solo home run, ending Skubal's shutout bid.

By then, however, the Angels' offense had broken the game open. Wells crushed his second homer of the night in the fourth before Los Angeles erupted for four runs in the fifth. Chandler Simpson singled to load the bases, Christian Moore lifted a sacrifice fly to score a run, and Wells followed with his third home run of the game, a towering three-run blast to center field that brought Angel Stadium to its feet.

The Angels' bullpen finished the job. Dylan Lee struck out two during a scoreless seventh inning before newcomer Seranthony Domínguez escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth with his third strikeout of the night. Brayan Bello recorded the final out after entering with the tying run on deck.

Skubal's final line was outstanding: 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 13 strikeouts, and no walks, an immediate reminder of why the Angels made him the centerpiece of their offseason.

Defensively, the Angels also turned in several highlight plays, including a spectacular diving catch by Chandler Simpson in left field to rob Dominic Keegan of extra bases in the second inning.

For a club that spent the season's first two months surviving injuries to every projected Opening Day starter, the return of Skubal could not have come at a better time. If Friday night was any indication, the Angels may finally have the ace capable of leading them back into the American League West race.

Angels Go All-In, Acquire Lars Nootbaar, Kevin Alcántara and Jorge Polanco from Cubs
June 6 -- The Angels have made their boldest move of the season, acquiring outfielder Lars Nootbaar, top prospect Kevin Alcántara, and veteran infielder Jorge Polanco from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for outfielder Nelson Rada and pitching prospects Yandy Gómez and Walbert Ureña.

The trade underscores the organization's belief that it can contend in the American League West despite a season that has been defined by injuries. At 30-29 and with ace Tarik Skubal returning to the rotation, the Angels elected to address one of their biggest weaknesses—an inconsistent offense. Nootbaar immediately becomes one of the club's most accomplished hitters. A disciplined left-handed batter with an outstanding on-base approach, he gives the team another dependable bat near the top of the lineup. With Mike Trout expected to miss another six to eight weeks because of a torn hamstring, Nootbaar is expected to step into an everyday role in the outfield.

The Angels also placed tremendous value on Alcántara, one of the Cubs' top prospects. Although they were reluctant to part with Nelson Rada, club officials believe Alcántara has comparable long-term potential. At 6-foot-6, he combines plus athleticism, power, speed, and outstanding defensive ability in center field while also possessing the arm and athleticism to excel in either corner outfield spot. The Angels view him as an important part of their future and believe he can eventually become an impact everyday player.

Polanco adds another experienced bat and valuable versatility. He is capable of playing second base, third base, and designated hitter, providing the club with additional lineup flexibility as the club continues integrating Marcelo Mayer while finding the best defensive alignment for Christian Moore.

Trading Rada was not an easy decision. The 21-year-old has long been regarded as one of the organization's premier prospects and a potential everyday center fielder. However, with Oneil Cruz firmly established in center field and Chandler Simpson emerging as the club's long-term answer in left field, the Angels believed Rada's path to everyday playing time had become increasingly crowded. General manager Andy Cardinal acknowledged the difficulty of moving one of the organization's top young players. "Nelson has a chance to be an outstanding major league player," Cardinal said. "Those are never easy players to trade. But we believe this move makes us better today while also bringing back another young outfielder in Kevin Alcántara who we think has an extremely bright future."

The Angels also surrendered two promising pitching prospects in Gómez and Ureña, both of whom had attracted interest from other organizations because of their upside.

The trade has significant roster implications beyond the three players acquired. With Nootbaar joining an outfield that already includes Cruz, Simpson, and George Valera —and with Alcántara now becoming part of the organization's long-term plans—the Angels appear poised to move on from Jhonkensy Noel. Noel has struggled to establish himself this season, batting .188 with six home runs and 16 RBIs. Because he is out of minor league options, the Angels cannot send him to Triple-A without first exposing him to waivers. Club officials are expected to explore the trade market over the coming days, but if no suitable deal materializes, Noel is expected to be designated for assignment.

One question still surrounds the trade. Nootbaar is eligible for free agency at the end of the season, making him a potential rental. Even so, the Angels believe the opportunity to add a proven everyday hitter was worth the cost as they attempt to capitalize on the return of Skubal and remain in the thick of the playoff race.

The message from the front office is unmistakable. The Angels believe they have weathered the storm of injuries. With their ace returning, a deeper lineup, and Alcántara stepping into the organization's future plans, they have signaled that the time to compete is now.
