1980 Hall of Fame

Clancy Carmon, 2B

Carmon turned a 5th round draft pick into the second-best tier of second basemen ever to play the game. His career lines up well with the likes of Eitor Armijo, Nic Weiner, and Simon Brice behind all-time legend Theodore Gonzales. He was originally a low contact, low power hitter with a pretty good eye, but nearly all of his offensive and defensive talent jumped ahead in 1965 and 1966. He went from a double-A organizational filler with the ceiling of a utility infielder into a perennial MVP candidate.

He retires with the most career homeruns for a second baseman and is tied for fourth-most stolen bases for any second baseman born in the 1900s (Theodore Gonzales, Esteban Moreno, Oliver Ashdown, Nathanael Acker).

Initial Acquisition: Drafted 135th overall in 1963 by the Blue Jays out of TCU

MLB Awards: 1 Tomas Reed MVP, 2 Youssef Raadouni GG, 6 AS, 2 Paul Vines SS, 1 WS

Career Stats: 8889 PA, 1811 H, 284 HR, 277 SB, .336 wOBA, 115 wRC+, 111.2 ZR, 66.2 WAR, 55 JAWS

Mikey Mark, C

Mark is the 16th catcher to enter the Hall of Fame and his career lines up well with Brantley MacKay and Eddie Lopp. He was well-rounded with good to elite defense and the knack for making great contact at the plate. His rookie year in the big leauges -- 1965 -- he won Rookie of the Month twice and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting to J.M. Zepeda, who only had a couple of good years before retiring due to injuries.

Initial Acquisition: Drafted 39th overall in 1963 by the Giants out of Kentucky

MLB Awards: 2 Youssef Raadouni GG, 3 AS, 4 Paul Vines SS, 2 WS

Career Stats: 7465 PA, 1951 H, 101 HR, 1 SB, .313 wOBA, 103 wRC+, -0.6 ZR, 43.3 WAR, 35.6 JAWS

Name: EmanuelTeranHOF.PNG

Emanuel Teran, 2B

Teran's career as a second baseman falls into the 5th tier of Hall of Famers at the position with the likes of Anthony Taubman, Tucker Holley, and Bruce Mercer. He never challenged for an MVP award but his consistent ability to get on base and provide good value on defense made him an asset for any team.

Initial Acquisition: Signed in 1960 with the Orioles out of the Dominican Republic

MLB Awards: 4 AS, 1 Paul Vines SS, 1 WS

Career Stats: 7254 PA, 1651 H, 55 HR, 112 SB, .326 wOBA, 109 wRC+, 88.6 ZR, 48.4 WAR, 41.5 JAWS

Name: BentleyCooperHOF.PNG
Views: 108
Size: 272.2 KB
Bentley Cooper, 1B

Cooper sneaks into the Hall of Fame along with similar defensive-minded 1B like Elliot Raprap and Eddie Miguel. Despite putting up impressive numbers throughout his career with the glove, Cooper only won the award once. His career overlapped with Tsuneyoshi Yamashida, Devan Quade, and Seth Carey. Cooper did have four seasons with 5+ WAR.

Initial Acquisition: Drafted 31st overall in 1964 by the Red Sox out of Minnesota

MLB Awards: 1 Youssef Raadouni GG, 2 AS, 3 WS, 1 PMVP

Career Stats: 6529 PA, 1501 H, 182 HR, 0 SB, .348 wOBA, 123 wRC+, 142 ZR, 45.1 WAR, 40.3 JAWS

Name: TonyGrattonHOF.PNG
Views: 106
Size: 275.5 KB
Tony Gratton, RF

Gratton enters the Hall with his teammate of nine years. Gratton did leave the Red Sox and played the last few years of his career with the Orioles, Reds, White Sox, Cardinals, Indians, and Dodgers. He never did make the MVP-level in his career but his longevity and playoff success push him over the edge. He did provide slightly more value over his career than fellow Hall of Famers Jeremiah Inman and Wes Grossman at the RF position.

Initial Acquisition: Drafted 22nd overall in 1960 by the Red Sox out of Oklahoma State

MLB Awards: 3 AS, 2 Paul Vines SS, 2 WS, 1 PMVP

Career Stats: 10704 PA, 2558 H, 350 HR, 6 SB, .343 wOBA, 121 wRC+, -61.7 ZR, 44.9 WAR, 36.7 JAWS

1981 Top 100 Prospects

Who on earth is Botan McBride? He was drafted in the 16th round in 1975 out of High School and was eventually released by the Phillies. After joining the Padres organization, he kept slowly improving but just took a huge step forward last season and now has the makings of a future ace.

Name: DonnieMartin1981.PNG

Donnie Martin is the top hitting prospect after being drafted 2nd overall last year. He has very good defensive ratings and should be able to make good contact and take a lot of walks.

1981 MLB Draft

Name: VasylKhan.PNG
Views: 98
Size: 44.8 KB
The top draftee is Vasyl Khan, this and last year's Phoenix Amoss MVP award winner in the NCAA for Maryland. He was originally born in Ukraine and will look to break Mykola Taraduda's MLB record 19.9 WAR from the country. Khaaaan has solid defensive skills in both the infield and outfield and has solid potential with the bat as well, though nothing in particular stands out as an elite skill.

Name: JoelCalzada.PNG
Views: 97
Size: 46.8 KB
The first pitcher off the board was Joel Calzada, a Cuban-born player drafted out of Pepperdine. He has an elite fastball and a near guarantee of four solid pitches. He will need to improve his control before breaking into the big leagues.

Name: KhalidJackson.PNG
Views: 102
Size: 27.5 KB
The first high schooler drafted was another shortstop - Khalid Jackson - out of Port St Lucie. He has no power potential but could be an elite defender with an average bat.

1981 MLB Playoffs

For the very first time, the Seattle Mariners are World Series champions! They took out the vaunted San Diego Padres in five games to claim the crown. In addition, two of the teams without a championship also made the playoffs -- the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks.

This was the Dbacks 10th time making the playoffs while the other two teams who have yet to win (Athletics, Blue Jays) have both made it to the final tournament over 25 times (27,30).

Carter Dunn, SS

Dunn was an offensive-minded shortstop who spent his entire career in the Red Sox organization and was part of their dominant team in the 1970s. His 47.4 career WAR lands him 15th all-time for shortstops and his 355 stolen bases are second only to Jay Christensen (365) for shortstops born in this century. His defense was pretty good for the first few years of his career but it did get quite bad as he aged into his late twenties. Dunn led the league twice in runs scored and three times in hits.

Initial Acquisition: Drafted 15th overall in 1963 by the Red Sox out of Carmel

MLB Awards: 1 Tomas Reed MVP, 3 AS, 6 Paul Vines SS, 3 WS, 1 PMVP

Career Stats: 8215 PA, 2191 H, 94 HR, 355 SB, .328 wOBA, 110 wRC+, -76.9 ZR, 47.4 WAR, 43.3 JAWS

McBride stays on top this year. He did pitch seven games in the majors for the Padres last year and will start the season with the club. His control is slightly better than it was last year but still needs some work.

1982 MLB Draft

Name: DustyMaga.PNG
Views: 97
Size: 31.0 KB
The first draftee in 1982 is Dusty Maga, who took a chance on returning to school after getting drafted 6th overall last year. He is a fairly well-polished and durable lefty starter with just shy of an ace ceiling.

Name: ApollinoSalinas.PNG
Views: 97
Size: 45.1 KB
The top high school draftee was also a pitcher. Apollino Salinas won the Marlon Pepper pitching award twice and the Aiden Shelton MVP once in the Oregon School Activities Association and signed extremely quickly with the Astros.

Name: NealDuke.PNG
Views: 94
Size: 36.0 KB
Neal Duke, this year's Phoenix Amoss MVP award at Texas Tech, was the top hitter drafted. The Rockies took him with the 8th overall pick.

1982 MLB Playoffs

The Atlanta Braves win the World Series for the fourth time but the first since 1926. The Brewers nearly made it back, losing to the Braves in 7 games in the Championship Series. The Blue Jays once again fell short and based on the temperament of their new owner may need to wait another 20 years for their next window.

AL Tomas Reed MVP: Francisco Rocha, SS, Cleveland Indians - 8.0 WAR, 149 wRC+, 12.8 ZR
It has been a while since we've had a dominant player. Rocha running away with the MVP award as a 23-year-old may be a start.

NL J.P. Avila Award: Ezra Barajas, RHP, St. Louis Cardinals - 6.9 WAR, 81 FIP-, 2.8 K/BB
Barajas has something to say about no dominant players...he's still going strong with his 4th J.P. Avila Award at age 30.

AL Rookie of the Year: Giovanni Valdez, RF, Tampa Bay Devil Rays - 4.7 WAR, 165 wRC+, -3.5 ZR
NL Rookie of the Year: Chase Shugar, LF, St. Louis Cardinals - 6.6 WAR, 116 wRC+, 30.3 ZR
For two years in a row, the NL MVP is also the NL Rookie of the Year.
