?

I tried.. to set the license control thing... i enabled it..and tried to run OOTP5..and nothing...
then i uninstalled/reinstalled it and nothing.

I compared my home computer with the one im trying to install the program on..
i noticed that the home(working) computer.......has an elicense folder in the C drive... the work one does not..
however there is an elicense folder when i go to settings.. i just cant delete it.....i uninstalled ootp4.. but it still has the ootp4 license on there..

any ideas?

Let Via Tech know, they may have some idea...sounds like it is related to that somehow.

Okay, I have the exact same problem. It doesn't matter whether I click on the icon or the exe file it pauses for a quick second and then does nothing, as if I hadn't click it at all. In fact the first two times I merely thought I didn't click the icon twice fast enough. I have also downloaded it and installed it twice, I also tried it before and after installing patch 5.10.

System Stats are as follows:

Windows XP Professional
2.4mhz Dell
ti4600 Geforce 128mb
768 mb ram
I haven't recently updated all my drivers and I guess that is the next step, but I haven't had trouble running any other games whatsoever.

If anyone figures this out please let me know, if not I guess I'll just be asking for a refund.

I have the exact same problem as you guys are mentioning. Everything was working fine, until a couple days ago. Must have been a XP update that did it, I'm guessing.

The above links that helped some, is giving me server errors. Can someone post the solutions that were given on the links.

Thanks.

enable the LicCtl

If it continues to have a problem then you need to contact ViaTech. Contact info is in the FAQ forum.

Good call. I actually found the solution after digging for another hour or so in the forums.

Thanks for the quick reply though.

Wouldn't it be nice if the folks over at viatech gave an error message of some sort? Terrible software design that reflects directly on their clients (OOTP5).

It's not really ViaTech, anyone who "disables" the loading of any programs in the windows startup really needs to know what they are doing and what the programs mean before disabling them. This feature isn't for the novice user.

I agree with you in that respect. However, I am not a "novice user". I am a Software Test Engineer for Microsoft working in the Windows Division. I happen to know quite a bit about Windows.

I didn't disable the "loading of a program" as you refer to it, I killed a service that had no description in the service entry tables. Anyone who cares about the security of their systems usually does so. It'd be nice if ViaTech at least let people know they are running as a service. I dug through their uninformative website extensively and found nothing that calls that out. There is also no mention of it during the licensing of OOTP5.

I am a power user that likes to disable services that aren't necessary to run the OS, for the sake of system security. I don't really like it when people install a service without my knowledge. Especially when it's a service that is required to run other applications.

My recommendations for ViaTech:

Let users know that they will be running as a service on their machine.

Code in an error dialog that lets a user know that the service needed to run isn't currently started.

If anything, at least add a description to your service. When there is no description for a service, many power users tend to not allow that service to run.

Personally, I think OOTP should have code to say "LicCtrl process not found, game unable to load." That would be much better than leaving the user scrambling to figure out why nothing is happening.

I had this problem when installing OOTP on my laptop, and I don't believe it was because of anything I did. For some reason, the LicCtrl service stopped working. Having code to check and relate why the program has failed to load is good coding.

Along that idea, the game should also have uninstall program warn the user he should use the Elicense program to unlicense the game before uninstalling. That too could save lots of headaches for people unfamiliar with how Elicense works.

It's not "good" coding...it's STANDARD PRACTICE. Omitting such a thing is terrible in my opinion.

I think in this case the Standard Practice is good coding.

I have heard that in a very few cases that the LicCtr isn't loading for whatever reason, I'm not sure what the common link in the cases is. I've never had a problem with it.
