Warmup rule

When this option is checked, where does the computer managers bullpen pitchers that are warming up show on the screen? Also what are the ** on both sides of the relievers that enter the game mean? Thanks for any advice.

Computer managers don't warm up pitchers. Well-known legacy issue.

Ok, so other than playing a H2H game against another human player, it has no use, or am I missing something. Thanks for the reply.

It's not an issue IMO. Can you explain why you think so?

I believe it's to let you know that there is a new pitcher in the game. If you notice, they go away after the pitcher faces a batter.

I can't speak for bwburke, but I've always seen it as, at least, odd.

Firstly, if the AI isn't bothering to warm up pitchers, why should the player?

I'd agree entirely that it's not exactly essential, but there are times when it can make an impact (even if it's just the illusion of an impact). Does he have a lefty warming up in the bullpen? Is his closer warming up in preparation for them to break the tie, or are they expecting extra innings and saving him? Bases loaded in the 7th, your pitcher's up to bat. Do you bring in a lefty or a righty to pinch hit? Depends if there's a lefty throwing in the opposite bullpen or not really. That guy's been warming up in the bullpen for 2 innings now, he's probably not getting into the game.
We're 7 runs ahead, do I warm up the closer just in case? Conversely, their closer's been sat on the bench all day, but now that we've scored 6 in the bottom of the ninth and it's a save situation, he's suddenly able to enter the game and be a hero because the AI didn't need to warm him up (admittedly, they probably would have started to when we loaded the bases that one time...).

These decisions make 0.00000000001% difference to the outcome of games, but they're decisions that have to be made by real managers. It seems odd that this isn't considered a biggie, given some of the things that ARE considered biggies.

Is my life significantly worse because of the lack of AI pitchers warming up? No. Do I even use the warmup rule myself? No (largely because the AI doesn't), but I would consider it 'an issue'.

Your point is well made.

Not having the AI warm up pitchers turns OOTP into an unequal-information game, because the AI "knows" that you have only two warm pitchers but you do not "know" anything about the AI's bullpen status.

I don't think the AI knows that at all. Has that been documented?

AI pitcher warmup

Like the original poster, when I started playing OOTP a few years ago, I expected the AI to show pitchers warming up when the warmup option was selected. I'm hoping that one day that feature will be added. Not only do the arguments posted so far apply, but when playing out games or watching AI vs AI, having information about pitchers warming up definitely adds realism to the game.
