How can you boycott if you are essentially uninvited?

All the individual sport competitors can still qualify and participate, but under a "neutral flag." If a Russian boxer were to win a medal, it wouldn't be recognized as part of a medal count for Russia. Not sure what the deal would be for the team sports.

I understood that point. My thought is the Int'l sports world essentially said they don't want them. They made an allowance just to be nice. It's not like the boycott would hurt the ones they are trying to affect. You boycott because your absence will somehow do damage and force a change. The Olympics & etc has already said they are ready to live with them. So what's the point of saying you're boycotting? The only ones who could actually have an effective boycott are the ones who are already permitted to go without any restrictions.

From what I understand, Russian amateur boxing is very strong and they seem to feel that the Olympics would be lessened by their absence. They are also unhappy that the issues with WADA have not come from boxing and feel they should not be punished because of it.

Not saying I agree with these points, just what I am reading.

Maybe. But like I said, the sports world said "come under our terms or not". So they are obviously underwhelmed over the prospect of the Russians absence.
