US military grads can go pro

They can defer their service till after their sports career is over, serve 5 yrs in a civilian capacity if they can no longer physically serve or pay back the cost of their education.

Navy is actually pretty good this year, record-wise, but a look at their competition tells the tale. I was viewing parts of their clobbering at the hands of Notre Dame this past weekend and I was reflecting on this very situation: How can the military academies ever hope to measure up to the top football schools?

The best players are not going to Annapolis or West Point for a couple of reasons. First, they are not interested in a military career. Second was this requirement for active duty upon graduation which is now being deferred.

Military schools will probably never be competitive in top college football for the first reason but easing the second restriction will help to some extent.

All three were given rear area assignments in part due to their athletic ability. So they probably support it or don't care all that much.

I can remember back to 1985 watching the Army-Navy game in the Enlisted Club on the naval base in Norfolk. McCallum pounded that rock time after time after time in a Navy victory over favored Army.
