It's halfway through the season... 20 game-schedule.
Will recap the first half of the season for each team.
Will update lineups, pitching rotations and depth charts, too.

MY LIFE IN 1952
EC's Still Havin' Fun in '52, Too!

OK, Basketeers, Buckaroos and Basket Weavers, too.
(Note: the LSU basketball players in the 80's took an elective course in basket weaving... just thought you folks might find that interesting… and would you believe that they all got A's in basket weaving.

Now on a more serious note, this year George Mikan and his Minneapolis Lakers were back in business in the National Basketball Association... the NBA playoffs concluded with the Western Conference champion Minneapolis Lakers defeating the Eastern Conference champion New York Knicks 4 games to 3 in the NBA Finals... the first NBA dynasty, the Lakers won their third NBA title in the last 4 years and what would become their first of 3 straight titles... if not for their Western Division finals' loss to the NBA champion Rochester Royals in '51, the previous season, Minneapolis would have won 6 straight titles... this season the Lakers gained revenge with a 3-1 series victory over the defending NBA crownbearer, the Rochester Royals, in the Western Division finals... Rochester was the favorite to win again this year, but Mikan and his crew prevailed this time around.

Minneapolis was seeded second to the Rochester Royals in the Western Division, while New York was only the third pick in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Game 1: Jim Pollard's 32 points led the Lakers to an 83-79 win in overtime at home... Mikan added 15 points and 16 rebounds... Connie Simmons and Dick McGuire were tops for the Knicks with 15 points each.

Game 2:The Knicks got the best on the Lakers 80-72 in Minneapolis paced by Harry Gallatin's 18 points... Mikan led the Lakers with 18 points and 21 rebounds.

Game 3: On the road in New York, Minneapolis took the series lead 2-1 with an 82-77 victory, sparked by Mikan's 26 points and 17 rebounds... Max Zaslofsky led the Knicks with 17 points.

Game 4: At home, the Knicks tied it up at two games each, winning in overtime 90-89 with Connie Simmons leading the way with 30 points... Jim Pollard scored 32 for the Lakers, while Mikan was limited to just 11 points, going just 4-for-20 from the field, but he did grab 17 rebounds.

Game 5: Returning to Minneapolis, the Lakers took a 3-2 lead in the series with a 102-89 licking, led by Miken and Vern Mikkelsen with 32 points apiece... Nat Clifton was tops for the Knicks with 17.

Game 6: Back at home, New York evened it up again at 3-3 by whipping Minneapolis 76-68... Zaslofsky tallied 23 for the Knicks, while Mikan was the Lakers' best with 28 points and 15 rebounds.

Game 7: The series' finale was for all the marbles in Minneapolis and the Lakers came to play, routing New York 82-65... Mikan scored 22 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to take the NBA crown... Zaslofsky popped in 21 for the Knicks.

NIFD STILL WIDE OPEN
Halfway through the North Island First Division 1952 season, it's still up for grabs with all six clubs remaining in the running in theory... Joliet (7-3) is the league leader, but followed closely by Jackson (6-4) and Dutton (5-5)... but don't count out the other three teams just yet, Avalon (4-6), New Yerby (4-6) and Kofa (4-6)... runs are hard to come by in the NIFD with the pitchers in command so far... no one team stands out with a rock-solid offense... they are all about even... the difference is on the mound... find a stellar starter and you can move up in the standings in the top North Island league.

1st Place: Joliet Green Giants (7-3)
Joliet features the best pitcher in the league, Grant Mosher (6-3, 2.18)... he is the difference maker... coupled with the top gloves in the league with a .971 FA... the Green Giants have a few good batters like Clancy Dupepe (.405), Nelson Bennett (.321), Bradley Stinson (.306), Tim Lytle (.235) and Zach McDonald (.262)... the Green Giants won the NI Second Division last year and look like a serious challenger this year for the NI First Division title.

2nd Place: Jackson Jackalopes (6-4)
The Jacks have the best offense in the league, but they are not on par with Joliet on the hill... they depend mainly on Jalen McCoy (4-2, 3.26), but he is sometimes plagued with control problems... Dusty Pringle is number two in the rotation, but hasn't been able to take the top spot so far... at the plate the most productive hitters are Edward Nolan (.395), Buddy Boyce (.343), Billy Mann (.333), Larry Kerns (.314) and Pat Pastoriza (.300)... pitcher Jalen McCoy (.353) also carries a good stick in the lineup... a big plus for the second-half run is the return of outfielder Freddy Barton (.200), who missed the first half of the season with a foot injury... now he is back and at the top of the batting order... Barton gives them a fine bat and good defense... he is a .313 hitter in his two seasons with the club... he is a solid basestealer, too... there will also be a change at third base with Pastoriza replacing the weak-hitting Rusty Coulter (.087)... Jackson's major concern is its defense (.949 FA)... the Jackalopes are getting ready to make a run at the Joliet Green Giants... in its North Island history, the Jacks came in second to Dutton (20-10) in the NI Second in '50 with a 17-13 mark... they were promoted to the NI First last year and ended up one game behind the Coyotes (15-5) in second place with a 14-6 record... now Jackson is poised and ready to win the whole shebang and finally win the pennant.

3rd Place: Dutton Coyotes (5-5)
Dutton has won the pennant both of its years in Island recreational leagues... the Coyotes were the champion in the NI Second Division in '50 (20-10) and they moved up in class last year and won the crown again in the NI First Division (15-5)... but this season, they got off to a horrid start, losing their first three games, but they have reversed course in recent weeks... the key to Dutton's season will be its pitching staff... as Allen Buchanan (2-3, 2.21) and Nick Walters (3-1, 2.57) go, so goes the Coyotes in the pitching-ladened NIFD... Dutton can hang with Joliet and Jackson offensively and on the hill... at .958 FA the defense is better than Jackson (.949 FA), but not as good as Joliet (.971 FA)... the Coyote bats are sparked by the league's top batter, Karl Krieger (.447) and by one of the best all-round performers, Tuck Thompson (.308)... Bill Harlow (.324) has added some to the offense, too... Joliet and Jackson have a few more reliable bats than Dutton... the rest of the batting order fall short offensively... the bottom of the lineup has to step it up for the Coyotes to contend in the second half... to improve the attack Jack Puckett (.136) is back in the lineup at catcher and Chandler Thomas (.333) will take over in right field for weak-hitting Coy Baker (.172)... a third-year vet Puckett is a career .343 hitter in the league, but has been lousy this year and lost his spot in the batting order... Dutton need Puckett's productive bat to battle Joliet and Jackson for the league crown.

4th Place (tied): Avalon Oldtimers (4-6)
At midyear the bottom teams are still close enough to challenge the top teams, just three games out of first place... more than likely they will have to finish up 9-1 or 8-2 to be close in the pennant chase... probably won't happen... Avalon tops the league with a .265 BA, but hasn't hit a homer in 10 games... they are near the bottom in scoring runs... defense is just average (.957 FA)... pitching is subpar for the most part, just about the worst in the league... the Oldtimers were originally in the NI First Division... in the first season they went a poor 10-20 and were demoted down to the NI Second Division in '51... voila, success... in the lesser division Avalon came in second with a 14-6 mark and earned their way back to the primier division... they are a little better, but are struggling again... Dan May (4-4, 2.68) is a solid starter with only one bad start this year, but it's really tough to win without any offense... rookie Bucky Hicks (.353) tops the Oldtimers at the plate, followed by rookie Curtis Kahl (.349), Sam Molnar (.316), Jason Alpert (.314) and rookie John Carpenter (.317)... lots of contact hitters, but not a lot of runs scored... Avalon has a shot at fourth place so they can avoid relegation... maybe they can beat out the New Yerby Yankees and stay in the top league on North Island.

4th Place (tied): New Yerby Yankees (4-6)
The Yanks began the season terribly with four straight defeats, but have done much better recently going 4-2... poor hitting, poor pitching and poor fielding will do it every time... they have used six pitchers thus far... things are on the upswing for New Yerby with wins over first place Joliet and second place Jackson... two recent additions to the batting order have strengthened the offense... shortstop Sonny Malinowski (.333) missed the first nine games with a shoulder injury... and outfielder Rex Markham (.333), a regular for two years, is now back in the lineup... Markham has batted .314 in his career... the Yankees top bats are Jimmy Brown (.324), Billy Welch (.303) and Andy Breland (.294)... Johnny Allen (.240) will return to third base and improve the offense, too... the regular third sacker Brad Mortillaro (.160) is heading to the hill and taking over the starting role... on the mound Mortillaro is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two appearances and one start... none of the starters have been consistent and reliable so far... Tom Womack (2-3, 4.50) had a good run for two games, but then ran into trouble the last three times out... New Yerby has been in the NI First Division all three years... they were pennant contenders in '50 with an 18-12 record, good for second place, just two games behind champion Kofa (20-10)... but the Yanks dipped to 9-11 and fourth last season, 6 games behind... they may have too much competition this year from Joliet, Jackson and Dutton... fourth may be the best New Yerby can do.

4th Place (tied): Kofa Kings (4-6)
Bad news for Kofa... their ace starter Brad Starr is out for the year with a very serious injury... his baseball career could be over... Starr has kept them in their games with a 3-4 mark and a fine 2.28 ERA... the 23-year-old hurler was 7-7 in two seasons with so-so Kofa with a solid 2.48 ERA in 17 starts... he will be vitally missed... the Kings don't have much offense... but possessed good pitching and good defense (.960 FA)... Jeff Davis returns to the number-one spot in the rotation, but he's not the pitcher he was two years ago when Kofa won the 1950 pennant (20-10)... Davis was the league MVP with a 14-4 record and a splendid 1.97 ERA... last year he slipped to 4-5 with a 3.73 ERA and lost the starting role to Starr... this year Davis is 0-1 with a 3.93 ERA in two starts and five games... Adam Morris (.294) and Joey Mason (.313) are the only decent bats in the lineup... Starr's roster replacement, Ted Taylor (.333), is a good, all-around pitcher-outfielder with a good bat... he will move into right field at first to try and bolster the offense, but he will also be considered for the starting rotation, should Davis falter... fifth place may be the best Kofa can do... more likely they will wind up last... either way, the Kings will be relegated to the North Island Second Division next year.

STOCKDALE ON TOP IN TIGHT NI 2ND RACE
There's a tight race going on at midseason in the North Island Second Division... it's beginning to look like a four-team race... Stockdale (7-3) is in the top spot, with a game lead over runner-up Wafford (6-4) and two games up on the third place Theodore Bobcats (5-5) and Union Heights Hackers (5-5)... fifth place Kinston (4-6) could be in the mix, while sixth place West Chester (3-7) appears to be headed nowhere but the cellar this year... regardless of where they are in the standings, the teams in the NISD can put runs on the scoreboard... most clubs have pitching problems.

1st Place: Stockdale Mustangs (7-3)
Stockdale has prospered in its first year in the NI Second Division... the Mustangs were relegated downward this season after little success in the North Island premier division... Stockdale was 14-16 and fourth in 1950, the league's first season... and worse last year, falling to fifth place with a 7-13 mark... the Mustangs bats are hitting much better this year and its hurlers are doing better as well... the drop in class has certainly helped... Stockdale has a well-rounded attack, solid pitching and good defense (.969 FA)... heading up their batting order are Ben Wasko (.368), Patrick King (.300), Sarge York (.300), Kasey Clark (.286), Charley Blackburn (.279), Andy Kessler (.278) and Mike Holston (.273)... top to bottom the Mustangs can handle a bat... on the hill, Sarge York had done quite well, too, with a 6-3 mark and a very good 2.76 ERA... Stockdale could use a right fielder who can hit, but they will likely stay with Jeff Woods, a fine defender, for the meantime... the Mustangs have played consistently well this year and have yet to have a losing streak... expect more of the same in the second half of the season... Stockdale is at home in the North Island Second Division, but it looks like they are headed back to the First Division.

2nd Place: Wafford Eagles (6-4)
Wafford was having a tough time in the NI First Division... they finished fifth in 1950 and got demoted to the Second Division with a 12-18 mark... the Eagles had trouble here, too, with a very poor 5-15 record in 1951, winding up in the league basement... however, they are much improved this season with the addition of several fine rookies, third baseman Alex Fielding (.400) and center fielder Dave Strickland (.283)... coupled with several other reliable hitters like Manny Velasco (.391), Chase Hibbard (.381), Eddie Dixon and Mark Byers (.294)... Wafford can hit the ball and since Ron Myles (5-1, 2.67) took over the mound chores, they have prospered... with recent changes, the Eagles now have a very good defensive team (.973 FA)… Fielding took over third base, weak-hitting Dan Reilly was moved to second base... along with quality first sacker Frankie Lentini (.158) and slick-fielding shortstop Mark Byers, the defense is solid... Myles has turned the club around on the hill... his only loss came in relief early in the season... Myles is 5-0 in his 6 starts, all of them quality starts... the Eagles have won their last 6 games in a row... Wafford will do well as long as Myles stays healthy... the Eagles will certainly be a challenge to the first place Stockdale Mustangs the rest of the season.

3rd Place (tied): Union Heights Hackers (5-5)
Historically in the NIRL, Union Heights did well in year one, 1950, with a 16-14 record, good for third place in the First Division, but they slumped badly in 1951, falling to 5-15 and that got them bumped down to the NI Second Division... with less competition the Hackers have fared better this year and should be in the running for the pennant... they don't hit well for average, but they can go deep (9 homers)... plus they have good pitching and good defense (.965 FA)... rookie hurler Eddie Beal is doing it all... 5-4 on the mound with a superb 2.15 ERA and he is sporting a .429 BA... vets Adrian Bryant (.333) and Robby Neill (.300) are the backbone of the attack... rookie center fielder Greg Banning (.268) has also helped out... Joey Madera (.122) is not hitting his weight, but he has a team high 8 runs batted in... the Hackers are inconsistent this year, but should play well enough to end up in the third spot in the standings.

3rd Place (tied): Theodore Bobcats (5-5)
Theodore has been in the North Island Second Division all three years and due to a lack of pitching will likely remain here... the Bobcats are not likely to catch Stockdale and Wafford... or even Union Heights... it looks like fourth place is the best they can do this year... Theodore was last the first year with a 10-20 record, but they improved greatly last year to 12-8, good for third place... and that's where they are running so far this season... the Bobcats have the bats with the likes of the league-leading hitter Sidney Kimball (.500), Ivan Orsak (.381), Justin Hines (.333), Matt Johnson (.318) and Bobby Brunow (.256)... but they don't have any pitching... in addition, they play poor defense with a .945 FA... Theodore has tried three different starters thus far... Charley Pride (2-2, 4.96) and Cameron Keltz (1-0, 5.40) did not do well... hopefully, the latest one, rookie Walter Johnson, will live up to his great namesake... so far Johnson is 0-2 in 3 starts with a 2.33 ERA... the Bobcats lost a fine, home-run hitting shortstop after 5 games due to a knee injury... rookie Carlo Vezina (.235) hit 3 out of the park in just 5 games... Vezina could return next month.

5th Place: Kinston Firebirds (4-6)
Kinston has always been in the North Island Second Division... they started the new year off well with a 3-1 record in March, but they have fizzled and flopped since... the Firebirds' best season was in 1950 when they broke even at 15-15, good for third place... but they slipped to fourth in 1951 with a bad 7-13 mark... and Kinston could be headed that direction again... the Firebirds have a few quality hitters like vets Fernando De Leon (.333), Doyle Goodrich (.325) and Johnny Andolino (.304)... and they have added some good rookies like first baseman Frank Gullo (.282) and catcher Dan Dusenberry (.400)... but they just don't have it on the hill... rookies Derek James (2-3, 4.46) and Ryan Ray (0-1, 5.40) didn't do the job... now it's been given back to 3-year veteran Mick Morrison (2-1, 1.88)... maybe he can turn it around... where Kinston really needs help is on defense... they are dead last with a very poor .929 FA... it will be tough for the Firebirds to finish any higher than fifth this year.

6th Place: West Chester Comets (3-7)
West Chester has been in the North Island Second Division all three years, too, with little success... fifth in '50 with a 13-17 mark... fifth again in '51 at 7-13... and last so far this season... the crux of the Comets' lack of success is pitching, especially this year with an atrocious 5.65 ERA... in a few words the Comets don't hit well or pitch well, but they do handle the gloves well (.969 FA)... the most productive bats are rookie Joe Musgrove (.268) and 3-year veteran Deloy Chapman (.243)... rookie catcher Tim Marko (.313) is hitting well and doing a fine job defensively... 3-year vet Lynn Burgess (.283) is always reliable at the plate and in the field... veteran lefty Cloyd Benton (1-2, 3.65) has been the only effective pitching on the staff... all in all, it's not going to be a good year for the West Chester Comets.

PELS, LIONS TIED FOR 1ST IN SIFL
After a half season of play in the South Island First League homer-happy Labadieville (6-4) and hill-happy Opelousas (6-4) are the co-leaders, but not by much... Des Allemands (5-5) and Claiborne (5-5) are just one game behind in third place... and also-rans Mystic (4-6) and Bar Harbor (4-6) are also within striking distance, only two games off the pace... pitching has taken a back seat to the offense thus far in the SIFL... the pennant is still up for grabs... nobody is out of it yet.

1st Place (tied): Labadieville Pelicans (6-4)
So far the Pels have survived on longballs, decent pitching and so-so defense (.945 FA)... they top the league in scoring runs with 14 homers, paced by A. J. Touhy (.400) and Gaston Bellanger (.311) with four apiece... Leon Renoir (.200) has walloped 3 out of the park, too... Labadieville has a high-scoring attack with a lineup chocked full of quality hitters... Emile Robert (.351), Dennis Denslow (.275), Raphael Fournier (.270) and Phillippe Voiselle (.238) have been productive bats, too... no one in the batting order is an easy out... on the mound David Bosley (3-2, 3.30) and Maurice Ganucheau (3-1, 3.46) have split the 10 starting assignments with Bosley the current number one... things are progressing well for the Pelicans in their first season in the league.

1st Place (tied): Opelousas Lions (6-4)
The Lions have thrived on the fine pitching of Raymond Colbert (5-2, 2.16)... and backed up by good relief work from Donnelle Cartier (0-1, 2.16)... defense is alright with a .951 FA... run-scoring is subpar compared to the other contenders... the most reliable batters are Alain Roche (.372), Leon Rousseau (.311), Pete Larkin (.316) and Jozef Zelazny (.283)... but none of them go deep very well... Opelousas has hit only 3 roundtrippers this year... home-run power makes a difference... it might be tough for the Lions to win the pennant without it... it's tough to win with just pitching.

3rd Place (tied): Des Allemands (5-5)
The Eagles have pretty good power with 10 homers, but don't hit for average... they come up short in comparison to Labadieville's attack... but they have better pitching than the Pelicans and the Lions... in fact, Des Allemands has the best mound stats in the league with Otto Ostwinkle (4-4, 2.49) and his bullpen buddy, Maxie Rosenthal (0-1, 1.69)... offensively, Oskar Seewald has carried the club with a .289 BA, 4 homers and 13 runs batted... Hans Hildebrandt has also helped out quite a bit with a .333 BA, 3 HR and 9 ribbies... Dieter Heinberg (.250) and Ostwinkle (.258) have aided a little bit, too... the Eagles need some bats to step up in the second half and give Seewald and Hildebrandt some much-needed offensive support... that will be key to the Des Allemands' pennant aspirations.

3rd Place (tied): Claiborne Cardinals (5-5)
The Cards hit better than Des Allemands, but they really suffer on the hill, especially in the bullpen... they are very fortunate to be at the .500 mark with such poor pitching... Robby Duplessis (2-3, 3.23) has gotten 7 starts and done fairly well, but no one else has helped out at all... when Duplessis gets in trouble, the game is over... luckily, Claiborne can hit the ball with the likes of Roy Ducote (.424), Benjamin Pardue (.364), Bill Belliveau (.333), Nick Varone (.313) and Luke Arceneaux (.310)... Ducote tops the SIFL in batting average and Pardue is best with 15 RBIs... a little bit of pitching can go a long way in the pennant race... if Duplessis can keep the Cardinals in the game, the bats may win it for him... the second half looks good for Claiborne.

5th Place (tied): Mystic Mariners (4-6)
The Mariners are a complete bust at the plate... they can't hit a lick (.215 BA)... but they have decent pitching, especially in the last 5 games since Shane Donovan (2-3, 3.45) has moved in as the primary starter... offense is minimal... Dustin Carmouche (.368) and Dizzy Benoit (.295) are the only consistent hitters in the lineup... actually, Mystic has been in almost all of their games despite the lousy offense... they handle the gloves alright (.948 FA)... the outlook for the rest of the season is not very good... the Mariners are the fifth or sixth-best team in the South Island First League.

5th Place (tied): Bar Harbor Acadians (4-6)
The Acadians began the season like gangbusters, winning four of the first five games, but they have tanked since then, dropping their last five games in a row... Bar Harbor is the exact opposite of Mystic... they hit the heck out of the ball, but can't get anybody out (5.60 ERA)... top gun Duke Rabouin (.325) has 5 homers, which leads the league, and 11 RBIs... Teebo Thibodeau (.356) and Pierre Marquette (.302) are also quality batters... and Jimmy Armstrong (.233) and Alex Korda (.250) have driven in 9 runs and 6 runs respectively... pitching-wise the Acadians have used 5 different starters, none particularly effective... their regular third baseman Danny Church (0-0, 4.32) may be the best of the bad lot... plus Bar Harbor is terrible defensively with a pitiful .919 FA... looks like the Acadians and the Mystic Mariners are headed to the SISL next year.

GATORS, TIGERS FEAST IN SISL
The carnivores are carousing in the South Island Second League at midseason... the first place Guedon Gators (7-3) and the runner-up Meraux Tigers (6-4) have feasted on the Cubs (5-5), Moccasins (5-5), Saints (4-6) and the Blues (3-7)... both clubs are riding high with Guedon winning its last four games and Meraux copping two in a row... the two leaders seem to be the creme de la creme halfway through the season... the Gators are one game ahead of the Tigers... so far, it's a high-scoring league with mediocre mound staffs.

1st Place: Guedon Gators (7-3)
The Gators are ravaging the league with a high-octane attack and sufficient pitching, plus they are the best defensively, too (.972 FA)... Guedon has a run-producing lineup led by George Thomas (.357), Anthony Stassi (.333), Winky Biggio (.324), Mike Rogers (.314) and Charley Comeaux (.313)... cleanup hitter Maurice Melancon (.222) has 3 homers and 8 RBIs to top the team... and pitcher Chris Charlet (4-1, 3.06) has done a good job as the number -one starter... but the team has trouble when it has to go to its bullpen... Charlet has only 2 complete games this year... Guedon's impressive bats and Charlet's quality pitching should give the Gators a good chance at the SISL flag.

2nd Place: Meraux Tigers (6-4)
The Tigers are just about as tenacious as the Gators with firepower... they are well-stocked with an abundance of bats, too, sparked by the league's top hitter, Clinton Theriot (.410), Ike Barbier (.364), Buddy Brodnax (.350), Jackson Maxwell (.333) and Stephen Pascal (.310)... and Meraux has dependable pitching, paced by Mario Michelli (3-2, 3.15) with 7 starts... and his bullpen has been fairly reliable with Tim Watford (0-1, 3.18) and Felix Goudeau (1-2, 4.50)... the Tigers can match the Gators hit-for-hit and homer-for-homer... and Meraux is good defensively with a .962 FA... they beat Guedon 8-7 the first-time around in their first meeting in March... they will play game two tomorrow afternoon in Guedon... they have 3 games left against one another... victory face-to-face will be decisive factor in the pennant race... Michelli for Meraux and Charlet for Guedon will be the key performers in the hunt for the pennant.

3rd Place (tied): Delacroix Cubs (5-5)
The Cubs can put runs on the scoreboard, too, just like Guedon and Meraux... they split two games with the Gators and lost twice to the Tigers... pitching is their downfall... number-one starter Clem Robin (3-4, 4.15) usually keeps Delacroix close and gives them a shot at a win, but the bullpen is another story... the bats have to win games... and the Cubs have some good ones in Clarence Chaisson (.390), Rufus Chauvin (.341), Chancey Guilbeau (.303), Doug Juban (.283) and James Ellison (.270)... plus Jefferson Roebuck (.222) can go deep and drive in runs, too... Chauvin and Guilbeau have 4 homers apiece and Roebuck has hit 2... Chauvin tops the SISL with 15 runs batted in... Delacroix will probably have to be satisfied with third or fourth place in the standings... they just don't have the pitching to hang with Guedon and Meraux.

3rd Place (tied): Chitamaca Moccasins (5-5)
The Mocs don't make a lot of contact at the place, but hit with power, pitch very poorly and play average defense (.954 FA)... that's it in a nutshell... Chitamaca's top batters are Allen Toussaint (.366), Adam Derouen (.326), Remi Jarreau (.325) and Washa Ducioux (.290)... Matt Briscoe (.229) has also been productive with 2 roundtrippers and 8 RBIs... it's another story on the hill where mediocrity prevails... Chitamaca has tried 3 different starters this season... none of the them effective... Bill Donovan (3-2, 4.24) has been the most successful in 4 starts... Travis Jumonville (0-1, 5.03) and Norville Dupre (1-2, 5.33) have had their troubles in the other 6 starts... the Moccasins seem to be headed for the fourth spot in the league.

5th Place: St. Dominic Saints (4-6)
Out of the starting gate the Saints sizzled with four wins in the first six games... they did it with outstanding pitching and productive bats... but both have fallen off in the last four games, all defeats... pitchers Paul Amiss (4-2, 2.07) and Gerry McClure (0-4, 1.29) have done very well, but they suffer from a lack of run support and a lack of defense (.950)... St. Dominic is last in runs and last in homers... they have not hit one out of the park this year, while the rest of the league regularly does it... the other five clubs have hit 11 or 12 home runs this season... the Saints are a bunch of punch-and-judy hitters with no extra-base power... Paul Amiss (.350) is the leader with some help from Connie Ryan (.341), Steve Farelly (.297), Mickey Retif (.286), Billy Steen (.278) and Don Gonczi (.275)... the RBI leader is Bobby Taylor (.233) with just 5 ribbies... St. Dominic has to find some hitters with power to be a contending club in the South Island Second League... they have the pitching.

6th Place: Bayou Bleu Blues (3-7)
The Blues have second-class pitching and good power, but they don't hit for much of an average... in addition, they are very bad with the gloves... their .915 FA is, by far, the worst in the SISL... not a good formula for success... heading up the Bayou Bleu attack is one of the better hitters in the league, Luc Desselle (.400)... he leads the league with 6 homers and also ranks second with 13 RBIs... the Blues have several other pretty fair batters in Marcel Boudreaux (.333), Zachary Richard (.304), Dexter Truex (.268) and Sammy Marcello (.262)... Jean-Michel Delhomme (1-4, 4.47) has been the most active starter with 8 starts, but he has been replaced by Randall Robicheaux (1-0, 3.45)... Robicheaux pitched well last week in his first start and beat St. Dominic... he will get the starting assignment this weekend... if the pitching perks up, the Blues could be challenging for third or fourth place this year.

MY LIFE IN 1952
EC's Just Havin' Fun in '52, Too!

Uh Oh!... my Mama and I left New Orleans and moved to Alabama for the last month of the sixth-grade school year... I am now living in Sheffield with my Aunt Ruth and Uncle Russell, while my Mama is staying with my grandmother in Florence... looking back on it, I think times were hard for my mother and father and this was a way to save money while he was away at sea in the Merchant Marines... the Tennessee River separates Sheffield and Florence... my aunt and uncle have three kids, George 11, Bubba 9 and Charlotte 7... Bubba is really a girl named Mary Elizabeth, but George couldn't say that name when she was born, so they just chose Bubba... Aunt Ruth and Uncle Russell are really good to me... they treat me like their own kids... they live paycheck-to-paycheck in a nice small home... George and I share a very small bedroom... I get my sports from the Tri-Cities Daily newspaper... and I go to Blake School... don't remember the teacher's name... but I do remember the principal's name, Mr. Beck... he was tough and stern and you did not want to cross him... kids would move to the other side of the hall whenever Mr. Beck came walking through.

Boy, do I remember my first day at Blake... all morning long all I heard was "Four Eyes"... yes, EC wore glasses and had since the age of two... Four Eyes was the name chosen by Benny, the alpha male in the class and the two sixth grades... thank goodness for sports... it is a good way for the new kid on the block to get acceptance... we went to lunch and then to recess... "recess" is play time on the playground... all the boys played a game called "suicide"... a football was tossed into the air and whoever caught it became the target of everybody else... don't understand why, but we all wanted to catch the ball and run with it... the smart thing would have been to let someone else catch the ball and then tackle him... but boys will be boys, so we all wanted to carry the ball... actually, EC was a pretty fair athlete... they had trouble catching me and bringing me down... boy, I was really something looking like Vic Janowitz of Ohio State or Dick Kazmeier of Princeton, two Heisman Trophy winners... the game of "suicide" showed Benny and the guys that I was a regular guy that wore glasses... as I said, thank goodness for sports... Benny and the guys stopped calling me "Four Eyes" after recess.

And I guess I should tell you what else happened on my very first day at Blake School... EC was returning to my home room after lunch... but I made a wrong turn and went right smack dab into the girls' restroom by mistake... but I didn't stay too long... when I saw all of the wide-eyed gals, I got out of there faster than the roadrunner cartoon character... BEEP! BEEP!... and EC was gone... the girls' restroom scared the daylights out of me... Benny and the guys really got a kick out of it... luckily, nobody told Mr. Beck or my teacher... that was my first and last encounter with girls in their restroom.

We walked to school back then... nobody had school buses... integration hasn't been invented yet... it was about about 10 blocks to the school... on rainy days my Aunt Ruth would drive us to school and pick us up.

Boy, I had fun in Sheffield... we played sports every afternoon... whatever was in season... football, basketball and baseball... one guy Freddy built a pole vault pit and high jumping pit at his house and we would compete against one another in sprints and racing and field events... throwing javelins and discus... we rode bikes everywhere... we would have races often... George and me, Eddie Neese, Walter "Red" Metcalf, Gardner Pickens and Freddy Hyde would play until the sun went down almost every day... Eddie Neese went on to be quite a baseball player... he signed a pro contract out of high school, but never made the big leagues... life was good.

Saturdays was special... my aunt and uncle would give us money to go to the Colbert Theatre, downtown on Montgomery Avenue... a dime to get in, a nickel for a drink, a nickel for popcorn and a nickel for candy... I liked Long Boy Kraut and Red Hots... once we got all of our munchies together, we headed for the front row of the theatre for rootin' tootin' shootin' cowboy movies and war movies... Roy Rogers, Gene Autry and Hopalong Cassidy were riding high on the range and John Wayne and Randolph Scott were whipping the heck out of the Germans and the Japanese and single-handedly winning World War II... or we might see comedies with Abbott and Costello, the Three Stooges or Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis... we also saw Ma and Pa Kettle and Francis, the Talking Mule... every Saturday they also featured a serial or a continued piece... the serial was about 30 minutes long and always ended in a cliffhanger with the hero's life in danger with no way to escape... we would have to wait and worry all week long to find out whether our heroes would live, die or even perish... I know it's hard to believe but they always got out of those impossible situations every single solitary time to live and fight another day... serials lasted about 15 weeks to tell the whole story... wow, they were really exciting.

And Sunday morning we would all go to God's House, the local Church of Christ... then come home to a family feast... life was simple and good in those days... no TV, no Facebook, no Twitter... no computers... no OOTPB.

But life was rootin' tootin' good in 1952.

MUSTANGS LEAD NIRL SECOND BY 2 GAMES
The first place Stockdale Mustangs thumped last place West Chester 10-4 in 10 innings and then got some help from the Union Heights Hackers, who whipped Wafford 3-0 and snapped the Eagles six-game winning string... Theodore stumped the Kinston Firebirds 3-1 and forced a three-way tie for second place with the Hackers and Eagles, two games behind leader Stockdale.

Sunday afternoon the Labadieville Pelicans (7-4) flew to the top of the South Island First League when they bested the Mystic Mariners 8-5... that gave the Pels a one-game edge on three clubs tied for the runner-up spot... Claiborne blanked the Opelousas Lions 3-0 and knocked them out of the top spot, while Des Allemands took care of the Bar Harbor Acadians 1-0.
