Jose Moreno 1980

Obscure infielder-outfielder, just eleven games with the '82 Angels, in an image that was taken about a week before his big league career ended.

Jose Moreno, Again

I notice a lack of a good Mets image of him anywhere - here's one I took in 1980:

In line with Merkle's recent work, here are some more 1980's obscurians.

The following were scanned from the Red Sox 1981 Yearbook.
1) Keith MacWhorter, a cup-of-coffee relief pitcher in 1980
2) John Lickert, a third string catcher in 1981 (I have seen a color shot from the '82 Sox yearbook, but this is better I think)
3) Dave Schmidt, who was essentially John Lickert except that his name was Dave Schmidt. (Not to be confused with the real Dave Schmidt, who pitched for the Rangers, Orioles, and Expos.)
4) Chico Walker, an outfielder-infielder most noted for a couple of reserve seasons with the Cubs much later in the decade. (Some decent Topps Vault shots of him are now available also.)

Steve Christmas 1983

Attached is a color photo of Steve Christmas with the Cubs, although it certainly isn't a close-up.

A head shot of Steve with the White Sox was posted in 2008 on the following webpage:

The following were scanned from the second edition of the Red Sox 1979 yearbook:

1) Stan Papi, a no-hit utillity infielder acquired from Montreal in the infamous get-Bill-Lee-out-of-the-clubhouse trade
2) Larry Wolfe, another reserve infielder from 1979-80. Wolfe at least could hit a little, and he was a better 3B than Hobson.

Prior to the 1980 season, the Padres loaded up with expensive veterans with big 1970's reputations. These guys didn't do much, and in mid-season Jack McKeon began cleaning house. One of the guys he dumped was third baseman Aurelio Rodriguez. I have seen some black and white shots of Rodriguez with the Padres but here is a color photo from the TSN 1981 Baseball Yearbook.

Jose Moreno - former Phillies farmhand

As a Phillies fan I followed Jose Moreno's progress through the Phillies farm system and he was regarded as one of their better prospects in the 1970s. He even had his scouting report printed in the annual top prospects review that Baseball Digest did each Winter.
I saw him play once for AA -Reading, PA - Eastern League and he looked like a good leadoff man and spray hitter.
He never made it to the Phillies as he was included in a trade that sent him and Richie Hebner to the NY Mets for Nino Espinosa.
I was glad to see him reach the majors, however briefly (82 career MLB games) with the Mets (1980); San Diego Padres (1981) and Los Angeles Angels (1982). He is now 57 years old.

Help with lost image.

Once again I can't locate an image that I once had. The image needed is a Topps Vault of Ron Schueler with the Phillies wearing home pinstripes and in a pitching pose. Please post if you have for me. Much obliged!!

Don Grate

Two of the 10 oldest living Phillies passed away in the last few days pitcher Don Grate, 91 and outfielder and
member of the 1950 Whiz Kids Phillies N.L Pennant winners, Jackie Mayo, 89.
Grate was a career minor leaguer, who made it to the Phillies for cups of coffee in 1945 and 1946. Twice held
the record for the longest baseball throw. He set the record in 1954, had it broken by a young minor leaguer,
Rockly Colovito before Grate retook the record by throwing a ball 445 feet and 1 inch in August 1956 while with
the Chattanooga Lookouts, a farm team for the Washington Senators. In the late 1950s Phillies Outfielder and
native Canadian, Glen Gorbous broke Grate's record by 9 inches (445 feet, 10 inches) and it appears that the
Gorbous record still stands.

Jackie Mayo (1925-2014)

Jackie Mayo passed away at age 89 recently. He was with the Phillies for
all or parts of six seasons (1948-1953), his only major league team. He later
formed a very successful real estate developing company in Ohio.
He was with the Phillies only for the month of September in 1950, but an
illness suffered by outfielder, Bill Nicholson created a vacancy for Mayo on the
postseason roster and Mayo appeared in three World Series games that year.

Jose Moreno as a Phillies farm hand

Although never a Phillie, Jose Moreno did
make it to the highest levels of their farm system
and he was included in the 1978 Phillies
Yearbook in the Top Prospects section.
