FA compensation?

I may be wrong, but im in 1996 and I believe player compensation for Free Agents existed.
Over the last 2 years I have lost 2 Type A players and 3 Type B players. All were offered Arbitration, all declined.

I have received no extra picks but have noticed other teams have.
Is there a "window" in which to receive compensation. All my Type A guys have signed elsewhere after the new year.

If you offered arbitration, they declined, and eventually signed elsewhere, then you should've gotten a message when they signed saying that you were awarded compensation picks.

Did these players by chance sign minor league contracts (or minor league contracts with major league options)? I'm pretty sure you only get compensation if they sign a major league deal.

Another issue I ran into in one of my leagues was the timing of your draft. If your draft happens AFTER free agents have already filed, it will reset everyone's Type A/B status. So for example, if free agents filed 11/1 and your draft was 12/1, any teams who lost Type A/B free agents in November would've received compensation, but any teams who lost free agents after that would not. This is based on some research I did way back in OOTP 14, so it's possible this issue has been fixed, but I always make sure my draft for the following year occurs before free agents file just to be safe.

I haven't done a draft in OOTP 20 yet so I'll keep my eyes out for any issues I encounter when I hit September through November.

All the signings occurred after the draft, from what I recall (especially the Type A guys). I thought the picks were applied to the next seasons Rookie Draft so never worried about it. Just annoying. Let an MVP, and another 2 time Silver Slugger/Allstar walk in order to get some picks. Nothing.
Will monitor next time and see if I get picks if a player signs before the draft.

BTW..I went through my emails and didn't see anything about Compensation. I do remember getting them before. Initially I thought I turned off a setting or Compensation didn't exist yet.

I believe compensation is removed after the draft passes

Yeah if you didn't get the notifications in your manager mailbox then chances are their compensation was reset because the draft had passed. That or you hit some other bug.

I think anyone who is a free agent when the draft hits has their compensation reset - so make sure you draft before free agents file. If you are doing that and you're still having an issue, then this is something new and I can't help - hopefully someone else can.

I feel your pain - before I discovered this I missed out on some potentially good compensation. I actually had it happen to me a second time before I could figure out what was going on, but for that one I had made a list of all the FA classifications ahead of time so I went back into the editor and changed them all back before they signed anywhere.

So when do you do the draft?
I think MLB does it during the summer. If I set if for June will I get the picks from the previous season FA loses?

If I do the draft, say at the end of the playoff, and FAs havent declared yet, I still wont get compensation, because there are no FA loses yet.

Just wondering.
Never really noticed this issue before.

So I think OOTP by default held the draft on November 1st. I had a historical league starting in 1950. The first few seasons in this league, the schedule and the World Series went late enough that the free agent filing date was after November 1st. But then I think in 1953 or 1954, my World Series was over in four games so the offseason started really early, and the free agent filing date ended up before 11/1.

Real MLB does it June 1. I thought about moving it to June 1, but if you import real rookies, then you'll be importing and drafting 1970 debut rookies on June 1, 1969 (for example). Which means if players sign quickly and go straight to the bigs, they could be debuting a full half year earlier than they did in real life. So I settled on a compromise and hold my draft on September 15. I'm still drafting next year's rookies early, but if they reach the bigs they've only played a few games (and are still considered rookies in their debut years), and I don't have any FA compensation issues, and my draft order is based on the previously completed season's reverse standings (instead of the one that just completed). The first year you move it, things might get messed up, so be prepared with a backup. But once you have it in place, things should hopefully go smoothly after that.

Good luck!
