How do you build your expansion team?
Just curious to different approaches and strategies to creating a team from scratch.

prospects, buried in the low minors until they develop. prospects. and more prospects. once they start to get to the majors, sprinkling in vets and keeping depth.

...never extend them, instead trade them for more prospects. Also alternate years in which you spend way, way too much on international talent.

Exactly. Your budget as an Expansion team is low so you have to trade away FAs to be for more prospects.

I started in '97 and took over the Dbacks, always liked thier jerseys haha. But my expansion draft wasnt all that good and I didnt pay attention to the people I was drafting's salaries, aka I had Dave Martinez making 4.5 mill lol.. TERRIBLE!!! But really I just used J.D Drew as my 1st draft pick and used the Rule 5 draft for depth and signed a lot of cheap vets to one year deals. I made A LOT of trades for "prospects only" while my roster was filled with 1 or 2 yr contract vets for '98 and '99. Then in 2000 I got lucky and nobody wanted to pay A-Rod what he asked and I got him for 9 mill a year for 7 years. Now we are 15th in budget which isnt bad for just starting and we just went 119-43. THE BEST record I ever have had in OOTP.
Heres my lineup and Starters.. just to show you can build form Expansion.. my advice is always trade for prospects you can keep for 6 years... C Victor Martinez 1B Aubrey Huff 2B Chase Utley SS Alex Rodriguez 3B Sean Burroughs LF Carl Crawford CF Carlos Beltran RF Jose Guillen SP Carlos Zambrano (went 22-1 with a 2.65 ERA as a 22 year old this last yr) SP Brandon Webb SP Jaret Wright SP John Smoltz SP Carl Pavano Prospects: Omar Infante, CC Sabathia, Prince Fielder. All through Draft or trading my FAs to be.. Long post but I am just proud of what I have assembled despite not matching The Dbacks winning a World Series so fast.(Phillies kept Schilling, and I couldnt afford R.Johnson lol)
