Questions From a New Player

Hey all,

I've recently started playing OOTP 15 and I'm certainly getting hooked. Already pre-order OOTP 16 and can't wait for the release. I've had a couple questions as I start to figure out the mechanics of the game and I was hoping you could shed some light for me.

1) I understand the current vs potential ratings that players have for their main attributes, but there doesn't seem to be a "growth" for other things such as defense or baserunning. Are all players always playing at that rating shown, or is there also a growth there that I am unaware of?

2) I'm certainly familiar with baseball, but don't know some of the more advanced statistics and such. Is there a database somewhere or another thread from the past where someone has explained statistics in detail or even some of the play by play algorithms in the game?

Thank you in advance for your help, and I apologize as I'm sure that I'm not the first person to ask some of these questions, but my initial search results didn't really get me anywhere helpful.

Players defensive skills definitely change over time, although there is no visible "potential" to refer to.

Generally, if a player has a visible rating at a position, he will lose that rating over time if he never plays at that position. Also, players defensive ratings tend to decline as they age, although it's not a straight line and it will vary form player to player.

To be honest, I haven't payed a lot of attention to the baserunning ratings, although the "speed" rating is far more likely to decline over time (players are usually much faster when they are younger). The "instinct" rating is generally going to be less volatile, as it isn't a measure of physical skill.
