Police shield MLB owners from reporters

https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2019/11/20...ners-meetings/

Not sure what to make of this. At all.

One might think the police had better things to do with their time

I make nothing of it. Once more, the media is reporting on what is important to them. They have a sense of entitlement and turn the molehill into a mtn whenever their perceived right to access is potentially at risk. The media is not an authority. No one has to talk to them if they don't want to. And the press doesn't have the right to pester people w/questions that they don;t want to ask.

What I gather, and I could be wrong is that

The hotel hired off-duty police officers to provide security for the meetings

The billionaire owner of the Houston Astros - the team that in the past few months:
  • Has been accused of cheating
  • Had a front office executive taunt a female reporter by invoking a player who has been suspended for domestic violence
  • Attempted to smear the reporter when she reported the story by saying that she had fabricated the story.
  • Did not offer an apology for the smear, even after firing the front office executive, until much later.
didn't want to answer questions from the media and security "escorted" him away from reporters who tried to engage him.

A rich, old, white. male trying to avoid answering questions of wrongdoing isn't exactly a rarity recently, but police acting as security and intervening on behalf of an owner at the owners meeting is rare - as in probably never happened before.

Also today it came out that commissioner Robert Manfred said that the MLB wouldn't "pay [the players] in economics to get labor peace" referring to negotiations regarding the next CBA.

There are also some reports that reporters are not being let into the meetings unless they have a room at the hotel. This is much less widely reported than what I mentioned above.

I won't for a second try to defend the Astros or Crane for cheating, but I'll just point out that neither rich, nor old, or whites, nor males have exclusivity on improper behavior, nor trying to avoid responsibility or accountability for it. I don't see what any of those categories has to do with the Astros' cheating or their feeble-to-date response to what has come to light.

Perhaps a couple of individual owners received threats. That's my guess although it's only a guess.

How about for attacking and smearing a reporter?

My pointing out that rich old white guys try to avoid answering for their wrongdoing in no way implies that any other group doesn't. Just you might be aware of a few other prominant cases currently going on. I'd also guess that rich old white guys get more help from the police in doing so than other groups.
