The pitchers were in their glory Sunday afternoon in the NIRL First Division... all three games were shutouts... Kofa clubbed first place Wafford 7-0... New Yerby blanked Stockdale 3-0... and Union Heights nudged past Avalon 1-0... only two games separated first place Wafford from last place Avalon.

MY LIFE IN 1950
Monday, April 17, 1950

Music, Movies and Sports were the biggest things in my life.

When I retired in 2002, I bought every song I have ever wanted... now have over 7080 songs in pristine, mint condition.

Make my own CDs... now have over 316 80-minute CDs... I program them just for me... programmed by tempo (fast, medium, slow), genre (Country, Pop, Rock, Big Band, Soul, R&B) and era (1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s)

stopped listening to pop and rock in the early 80s...the style of music just didn't appeal to me.

stopped listening to country in mid 90s when they stopped playing real country music... country ain't country without steel guitars, twin fiddles, twangy country voices and honky tonk music... don't care for the pretty little ladies with the wimpy voices singing bad pop and rock... ditto for the guys... none of them are real country people... they are just so-so pop and so-so rock wannabes.

Country music is no more... it's gone.

Now back to pop music in 1950... there's a new song on top of the Billboard pop chart this week... pretty little Eileen Barton has the number one pop song, "If I Knew You Were Coming I'd Baked a Cake"... it's a silly, little ditty, but it makes you want to sing along with it on the radio.

Hear it on youtube at this link:

DUTTON TAKES LEAD IN NIRL SECOND DIVISION
The Dutton Coyotes took over the top spot in the NIRL Second Division with a startling 6-3 victory over the second place West Chester Comets... lousy defense cost the Comets the league lead... it was the fifth successive win for the Coyotes... two also-rans snared last-ditch victories... Joliet rallied past Jackson 5-4 in 14 innings... and Theodore finally broke into the win column with a 5-4 verdict over the Kinston Firebirds.

MY LIFE IN 1950
Saturday, April 22, 1950

Life was simple in 1950... for everybody... my mama, daddy and me didn't have a lot of pleasures... movies and radio was about it... average folks didn't have TV at this time... going out to eat was special... we especially like to go to Morrison's Cafeteria... my favorite meal for years was fried red snapper, mashed potatoes and apple pie with a piece of cheese on it... and then, of course, we had wonderful Pontchartrain Beach... it was a terrific amusement park with all kinds of great rides, all kinds of games of chance where you could win prizes and good concessions stands with all kinds of good food... snowballs, cotton candy, hot dogs, hamburgers... even a very fancy restaurant, the Bali Hai... no, we couldn't afford the Bali Hai... we would have to settle for inexpensive stuff... there was no admission to Pontchartrain Beach, but you had to pay for the food and the rides... my favorite was the bumper cars... it also had a great ride, the Zephyr... a sky-high rollercoaster... each night about 7 there would be free acts like trapeze artists or free music concerts featuring country and pop stars... so you could go and enjoy all the free stuff... looking back on it, I think the high wire folks use to fake falling or losing their balance just so we would ooh and ah and be scared out of our wits... we thought it was for real... it was really scary for a 9-year-old like me... one time a high wire artist fell to his death... we went the next night to see where he fell on the sand... you could also swim in the lake... Pontchartrain Beach was filled to capacity on weekends... they had a huge parking lot that would be completely filled.

Most of the time we wouldn't spend much money... I would get a hot dog, coke, ice cream or cotton candy... and ride one ride... and we would watch the free show, too... don't know why, but we didn't go swimming very often... as I said, life was very simple in 1950... our pleasures were few and far between... and inexpensive... and though it went out of business in 1983, Ponchartrain Beach will live on in the hearts of all New Orleanians who enjoyed it beginning in 1928... it was one of the best amusement park in the world.

Here's a video of Ponchartrain Beach when it closed down in 1983.

I like how you are including personal history from the era. This particular post reminds me of my mother's stories of riding the trolley to Glen Echo, an amusement park just outside of Washington D.C. It's now owned by the National Park Service with some of the attractions still standing.

I think I would have really liked your mother... she must have been quite a lady and a mother... if I remember correctly, she was a big Washington Senators' fan... boy, I'll bet she was a wealth of knowledge about the Golden Days of Baseball.
