Alvin Brooks
I found this photo while on a quest for an image of Alex "Alvin" Brooks, an outfielder with four Negro League teams during the 1934-40 period. I first encountered this Alvin Brooks when he was Human Relations Director for the City of Kansas City, Missouri. In the article about him, it confirmed that he was a former Negro Leagues ballplayer. That was in the 1980's, so I thought I had the right man. But this photo is much later. At this point, he was the mayor pro-tem of Kansas City, and it was now the year 2002. I figure that Alex "Alvin" Brooks must have been almost 90 years old by 2002, so it is highly improbable that he would have been in such a weighty position at that age. So we have a photo of a Negro Leagues player named Alvin Brooks, but it's not known what position he played nor with what team. It's likely that it was in the later stages of the Negro Leagues' history.
On further research, I've concluded that this Kansas City Alvin Brooks was born in 1932, which is consistent with my previous assumption that he wasn't Alex "Alvin" Brooks. I found an article in the Kansas City Star in 1963 which reported that as a young police officer at age 31 he had gotten into a car accident. (Later in his career, he served as police commissioner of Kansas City). Then I found a 2010 TV news video celebrating his 78th birthday. Last edited by Cusick; 10-01-2014 at 08:43 AM. |
