Looking back over the years
What are some of the features that OOTP introduced over the years that stand out as something that instantly made you love the game even more? Oh and let's just assume that 99.9% will want to say 3D, so no need to mention that.
I have no memory of the first edition to offer it, but short play by play instant was a game changer for me. I like to play fast, but I've never been able to get into simming. I have the hugest case of sim envy on the planet, but I've pretty much come to the understanding it will never happen for me. So I play them out. And short play by play instant is perfect for doing so. Another is the Hall of Fame, the plaques and the AI voting in the inductees. This feature is so damn special and wow does it bring a league to life. Once you get to a point that players start getting elected, every off season is like Christmas. I love getting mad when a player I want in gets snubbed. Just incredible. Of course, I wouldn't be David Watts(which I'm really not, I just wish I could be like him) if I didn't say RANDOM DEBUT. I think y'all know my feelings about this great addition. WOW! |

Too many to list... but..
Auto-calc that enables us to fine tune leagues, feeders all the way to the highest level leagues in our games be it fictional or MLB, to suit our tastes. Face Gen Roster rules that made it harder to keep talent and an AI that does a respectable job of working within those rules. This is an ever improving area of the game that gets worked on every year and has made it a more challenging game. Sabre metrics, DIPs, ZIPs, etc. and the whole move to advanced stats and more realistic players. |

Being able to edit .txt files before they changed the format. it's probably easier now but i spent 6 months editing the txt files to get my Endor league and other Star Wars leagues running the way i want them.
Random debut 3D of course. i remember when people threatened to leave if 3D was implemented and we probably have more fans now then 14 timeframe. OOTp has come a long way since 10 for me.

The Negro Leagues, real minors in general.

Where to begin?
Well, first and foremost the introduction of the global database in 2006 which, for the first time, gave us the ability to assign a nation to our fictional or real world leagues. Little things like customizable player lists, right-click menus, bookmarks, etc. were all huge additions and rate among my favorites. International Play, 3D, MLB & MLBPA licenses, Facegen....just too many to list.

3D doesn't really excite me, what excites me most is a deep scouting/minor leagues system. Having to guess what prospect will work out is exciting, have the fog of war with the ratings, all that is thrilling, not knowing what will happen, and that's usually left out of sports sims.

I am fairly new to OOTP as my first edition was 15. The MLB/MLBPA license was by far the reason why I play and purchase OOTP every year. I only played 15 for a couple hours but didn’t feel connected to the game simply because the team logos weren’t in the game.

People look back fondly on OOTP 6.5 and revile the first version after the rewrite, which I understand on a lot of levels, but the introduction of minor leagues as fully formed leagues with games and box scores happened on that rewrite, and for me it was massive. Just personally. Probably not for a lot of others.
I think there was a lot wrong with OOTP 2006 (or whatever that rewrite was called, I think that was it), but I was too busy gawking over the minors to notice. |
