Elmer Gedeon 1939

On Memorial Day, always appropriate to honor the twelve major league players who have died in service to this nation since the end of the Civil War.

Elmer Gedeon of the 1939 Senators, a three-sport star at Michigan, was a pilot shot down over France on April 20, 1944.

This group image is the best known of him - he's on the right - but nowhere do I see identifications of the teammates with him. Does anybody know them?

More Topps Vault stuff 1/2

Some more of the folders I put on the "sell now" pile are popping up in eBay auctions...

Ken Brett 1967 (with the Dodgers, spring training 1980)
Bill Latham 1985
Scott Loucks 1980
Jophery Brown 1968

The things you find out. Brown was a TV stuntman before he made his one-day sojourn to the majors with the '68 Cubs, and went on to an award-winning career in the field in film. He was Morgan Freeman's stunt double in several movies, and appeared in, and was stunt coordinator for The Bingo Long Traveling All-Stars And Motor Kings.

George Abrams 1923

The photo on the left of George Abrams is from the Springfield (MA) Republican of Dec. 13, 1923. He had just been acquired by the Springfield team from the Bridgeport Club during the winter meetings in Chicago. It seems reasonable to conclude that the uniform he is wearing is that of Bridgeport.

The photo on the right shows George Abrams as the manager of the Everett (WA) team. It is from the Seattle Daily Times of Sept. 17, 1927.

Bored yet?

Jeff Musselman, Rafael Santana, Hubie Brooks, Rick Cerone, Ray Knight

Nothing against him, personally, but its still hard to accept that Jeff Musselman is what we got for Mookie Wilson. Just sayin'.

Thanks to Cusick I had a little to work with but the photos were grainy and newsprint so I mocked one up as best I could

George Kernek 1965

The University of Oklahoma basketball and baseball product spent 8 years in the minors with the Cardinals as insurance to starting 1B Bill White before eventually being given the 1B job to start the 1967 season...But, that lasted only a month before the Cards acquired Orlando Cepeda. Kernek got into 30 big league games between1965-66 batting .259 with 6 RBI in 81 AB.

His story is told even further here https://retrosimba.com/2012/07/27/ge...ce-bill-white/ (this is an outstanding site for any baseball fan-especially Cardinals fans)

He spent 1968 and 1969 with the White Sox AAA club before closing out his career in 1970 with the Reds AAA team....These photos are from the great Dr. jteee on EBAY

I got bad news for you. That's a shot of him with the Dodgers, and a Cleveland cap photo-shopped on. I'm not sure what to make of the red sleeves; the Indians work black ones in 1960. The 1960 Cleveland shirt would also have an Indian-head logo on the left sleeve and a large red number outlined in black on the right.
