I noticed that Sammy Goss wasn't rated. He fought out of Trenton, NJ in the late 60s through the mid 70s. He was also my boxing coach for a while in the late 80s. He was rated #1 in the world for a few years during his fighting days. I have rated him. If anyone wants be to post it, sound off.

Also, I work with Billy Backus; who is rated in the game.

Goss is in fact rated in the game as a Junior Lightweight. Title Bout rated him pretty well.

Rocco;
Some of the guys I'm waiting to pick up from your replay are on the horizon --- Cherville, Nitschke, Westphal, Bygraves and Ritter are nearing their Zech tests. Way down the road, I'll be interested in von Homburg, Echevarria and Weiland as well. I'm convinced this replay of yours is one of those "guilty pleasures" I've read about ...

Mark,
What's interesting also is that as I'm going through rating the guys Zech fights I'm "unearthing" some other intersting looking fighters that I think would be great to add to the data file.

For example looking at the fight record of one of Zech's early opponents, I seen this German named Hans Kalbfell. Career record is only 26-9-1-19KO's, but a fairly impressive lineup of opponents plus he held the German HW title for a period in the late 50's. Some of his opponents include Albert Westphal, Dick Richardson, Cherville, Archie Moore, Henry Cooper and Tommy "Hurricane" Jackson. Looking at some of these guys, many of them being European being the tie around Zech, I see many that I think deserve to be rated, especially comparing to some of the guys I see already rated in the game.

Glad your enjoying the replay. I'm really liking it helping me to see these fighers of yesteryear. Once I complete Zech, I think I'm going to do this again with maybe Dante Cane which would be quite a few fights offering the opportunity to look into many more fighters.

Thanks!
Rocco

Could have sworn I hit reply when posting the following. Instead it ended up as a separate post. In the interests of keeping the heavies together, I am pasting it back in here. Sorry for any confusion.

A WWII era heavyweight slugger

Pat Comiskey was a big banger from New Jersey. He weighed 195-225 during his career, 1938-51, and posted a 71-12-2 record with 58 KOs. Oddly, he was only 3-2 against heavyweights rated in TBCB, although there are 75 heavyweight fighters from 1940 to 1950 in the game. Comiskey KO'd Johnny Williams, Lee Oma and Omelio Agramonte, lost to Lou Nova and was clobbered by Max Baer among game-rated heavies. Other bouts of note included wins over Bob Garner, Joe Kahut, Art Henri and Joe Muscato; splits with Steve Dudas and Alf "Big Boy" Brown; and losses to Kid Riviera and Johnny Flynn. BoxRec 024446, born 1920-10-27, died 1989-05-24.

Gerhard Zech's 13th fight.... 1961-04-28 Sports Palace, Berlin, Germany

Jose Peyre-1 Overall Rating
Nationality- Belgium
b. 1933-03-26
d.
Career, 1955-70
BoxRec. 021200
Record 10 wins / 24 losses / 1 draws / 5 KO
Peyre was one of those fighters looking at his record and who he fought, you wonder why he hung around as long as he did. Fighting pretty much in the France/Germany/Italy sector of Heavyweights he couldn't even stack up against them. He battled against the likes of Alain Cherville, Werner Wiegand, Plinio Scarabellin, Zech, and Mino Bozzano with no success. He did manage to beat Bobby Warmbrunn. Brian London(11-0-0 in his early part of his career) KO'd him in an early round and late in Peyre's career Jose Manuel Urtain Ko'd him in 5 round.
Because of the number of fights he was in. I did an amount of play testing first to tweek around Pryre's ratings to hopefully get them something correct. I fought him around 600 fights in 35 fight sets for his career replay against the 1,2,3 rated HW's. Finally was getting his W/L record, number of stoppages and number of times he was stopped along with average rounds repeating pretty decent. So I think Peyre is rated pretty decent.

Both fighters were set in their Pre-Prime stage. In real life, Zech won by TKO in the 3rd round. In my replay here, Zech put Peyre to the canvas in the 4th round finally, doing it twice, 1st time for a 9 count, then a 5 count. In the 5th round, Zech put Peyre down again and then finally at 2:11 of the 5th round the fight was stopped with a TKO for Zech and his 13th win without defeat.

Next fight up for Zech will be on June 16th, 1961 against Alain Cherville, a Belgium HW of modest success who posted a 23-26-2 Record during his career. When he went up against Zech, Cherville was nearing the end of his career. The fight will be staged at Hamburg, Germany....Be there!!

At this stage of Zech's career he starts moving up into the higher echelon of heavyweight fighters in Europe. So in the next few fights I think we'll start seeing some more boxers from this early 60's period that will of interest to us in adding to the heavyweights stable of fighters.

I decided to go back and more extensively play test some of Zech's earlier opponents that I created to hopefuly better tune their ratings up. Not going to do all of them but some who had more extensive careers....

Starting with Bobby Warmbrunn who fought 68 bouts in his career. I ran about 1300 bouts with him against 1,2,3 and 4 rated fighters and was getting decent results at the end with W/L's and KO's on both sides.....here's his complete rating lineup again.....

Bobby Warmbrunn-1 Overall Rating
Nationality-Germany
b. 1924-10-15
d.
Career, 1947-63
BoxRec. 028302
Record 15 wins / 50 losses / 3 draws / 6 KO
A fairly long career against nobodys with terrible results over all for Warmbrunn. He lost decisions to an Arno Kolblin(46-21-9 at the time) adn Richard Vogt(53-6-9 at the time). Probably the best opponants as far as at least impressive looking records. He did fight Franco Cavicchi a couple times being KO'd early in both fights. He lost by TKO in the first to Dick Richardson in 1955. He actually fought Zech 3 times in 1960 which were 3 of Zech's first 6 fights.

Here's Robert Eugene after some further testing and tweeking a bit......

Robert Eugene-1 Overall Rating
Nationality-Belgium
b.
d.
Career, 1946-60
BoxRec. 037142
Record 10 wins / 42 losses / 4 draws / 5 KO
Eugene fought and lost for the Belgium HW Title in 1948 very early in his career. Later in 1952 he lost another chance at the Belium title. Then in 1954 he defeated a Piet Wilde in the 1st round on a KO for the Belgium HW Title. He defended that title twice in 1955 and 56 against an Al Bernard both times. During that period he lost 2 fights to Franco Cavicchi and once each to Brian London and Dick Richardson. In July 1956 he lost the Belgium title to Alain Cherville. That loss was part of a 0-16-1 string that marked the end of his career. Part of those 16 losses included another one to Cavicchi, one to a Willi Hopner(45-8-3) and then to Zech which was his 2nd to last fight of his career.

It takes a lot of dedication to extensively test and tweak a Eugene or a Warmbrunn. Thank you.

Ok, I've done some more extensive retesting of Andre Wyns. I ran about 500 bouts tinking with different settings. With the ratings I've giving you here, and fighting against the 1,2,3 rated fighters in the data base(I put Mildenberger in manually), and resimmed his 29 bouts several times Wyns averaged....

2 wins(1actual), 26 losses (28actual), .5draws(0 actual),
he still recorded a KO here and there, but I'd live with that and the times he was KO'd ave. about 14(16 actual)

Andre Wyns-1 Overall Rating
Nationality-Belgium

Career, 1954-69

Futility should maybe be his nickname. Wyns fought and lost for the Belgium LWH title in 1955 and again in 1956. He fought once and lost in 1965 for the Belgium HW Title. His one win was an 8 round decision over an Andrien Verbrugh in 1958 whom he then lost by TKO in the 8th in 65 in that HW title fight. Wyns actually fought a few notable Europeans including Karl Mildenberger, Gerhard Zech, Dante Cane, Peter Weiland, Jurgen Blin(twice) and Bepi Ros.

It all added up to some significant changes, so this has taught me well to make sure I do plenty of simming of bouts till I'm satisfied with the results. With the autoscheduler though in the new game, doing mass numbers of play testing has become a LOT easier!

Next up I'm going to retest Mino Bozzano and Jose Gonzales Sales and then I'll get back on track with my Gerhard Zech replay and get us some new fighters here!

I mentioned 500 bouts resimed which don't seem like a lot, but that was after probably some 400-500 other bouts with earlier changes before I settled on what I wanted. Thought I'd mention that since 500 bouts mentioned kind of contradict my statement "after extensive retesting"!

Ok, redid Bozzano, and there's quite a bit of change. His overall goes from 1 to 3 and his CB/CS both go from 4's to 8's! Chin KO goes down from 3 to 2. AbsP goes up 2 to 3, KI goes from 5 to 7 and I improved his defense from 4 to 2. As I was going through this I ran about 200 fights and he was way under preforming his record. About 1200 more fights later I ended up with what I got. Now you take and fight Bozzano with these new ratings against 1-2 rated HW's he'll win about 70-75% of his bouts. KO's both ways pretty decent ratio to real life. As you increase his opponents ratings to 3 to 5 his record will level out to about 50/50. Start going heavier above 5's and his record starts going south. The results of this testing is beginning to make me wonder about Zech's ratings. But we'll see in time.

Career, 1957--62

Mino was 25-0 thru mid 1959 including a 10 round decision against a near finished LHW great Joey Maxim, an 8th round KO win over Franco Cavicchi who was in the latter stages of his career and a 10 round decision over Joe Bygraves who also was on the downside of his career. Bozzano then in late 1950-60 lost 2 of his next 3 fights, one a 2nd round KO by Zech. Mino ran his record to 31-2 when he Oct. 1962 he went up against Sante Amonti for the Italian HW Title. Amonti KO'd Bozzano in 3 sending him into retirement.

Ok, last retest, Sales. I was VERY surprised how overall my original ratings seemed to work. The only changes I made were his Chin KDown form 5 to 4 and decreased both Punching and CPunching from 36 to 34. I ran about 1300 fights in sets of 69 bouts against HW's rated 1-5 picked by the Autoscheduler. I ended with an average record per 69 fights fo 31w/33L/5D with 14KO's by Sales and 14stoppages of him. All numbers pretty darn close to his real ones. The random picks of opponents made thing vary abit. A good number of the 69 bout sims his record was pretty darn close to real numbers though.

With this I now got retested everybody I wanted and will get back on track of my replay of Zech with Belgium, Alain Cherville due up next.

Sales is Zech's first opponent of any real accomplishment in his career. Sales was the Spanish HW Title holder from Aug. 1952 to Dec. 1957. He fought against Mariano Echevarria twice in 1961 trying to regain the crown loosing both times in 12 round decisions. In his 2nd to last fight of his career he tried again for the Spanish title loosing to a Benito Canal. Sales fought a number of noteable European HW's in his career, unfortunately with mostly bad results, thus his sub .500 record and low 2 rating. Zech's first non 1 rated opponent though. Sales drew with Willi Besmanoff and then lost a decision to him. He was TKO'd in 3 by Brian London. He beat Franco Cavicchi twice. Lost an 8 round deicision to Albert Westphal, a 10 round decision to Sante Amonti and lost other fights to Joe Erskine, Zech, Karl Mildenberger, Billy Walker and Johnny Prescott.

Well, getting back into the swing of Zech's replay here. Starting with this opponent, we'll start seeing a few interesting HW's that you might like to add to your data base.

Gerhard Zech's 14th fight.... 1961-06-16, Hamburg Germany

Alain Cherville-2 Overall Rating
Nationality- Belgium
b. 1931-08-11
d.
Career, 1954-62
BoxRec. 012483
Record 23 wins / 26 losses / 2 draws / 8 KO
Cherville's first two years were spent compiling an 11-2 record against the likes of 1 rated fighters in the game whom I think you'll see him beat a fairly consitant 70+% of the time as he's rated. Then in late 1955 and into 1956 he lost first to Dick Richardson, KO'd in the 2nd and then was beaten twice by and up coming German HW, Hans Kalbeff. In 1956 he defeated Robert Eugene for the Belgium HW Title. He defended it later in 1956 against a Marcel Limage.

Over the next 6 years, Cherville fought guys who'd looked to be in the 2 to 5 range of rated fighters in the game. He managed wins over LHW Gerhard Hecht and HW Werner Wiegand of Germany. He managed a 10 round decision over Jimmy Slade in Vienna, Austria. He lost more then he won though. Loosing to Archie Moore who was on the backside of his career, Mino Bozzano, Ulli Ritter, Franco Cavicchi, Albert Westphal, Franco DePiccoli and twice to Karl Mildenberger to name a few. His career ended with consectutive losses to a Bonino Allevi, DePiccoli, Gerhard Zech, Jose Peyre, Bozzano, Sante Amonti and lastly to Wim Snoek in Dec. 1962. Seven years later, Cherville tried a 1 fight comeback getting KO'd in the 3rd by a guy making his debute in the ring.

Zech again is still in his Pre-Prime stage. I set Cherville at Post-Prime. In real life, Zech dispatched with Cherville in quick fashion with a 2nd round TKO. I scheduled this replay for 10 rounds. It was a action packed fight. First couple rounds were pretty even. Then in the 3rd round, Cherville shocked the Hamburg crowd putting Zech down for an 8 count! Then to everyone's amazement, Cherville did it again in the 4th, decking Zech this time for a 6 count. Zech came back and regrouped himself in the 5th and took control of the fight from there. He sent Cherville to the canvas twice each in the 5th and 7th rounds and then after beating on him some more in the 8th, the fight was ended in the 9th at 0:46 handing Zech the TKO victory and his 14 win without defeat.

Next fight up, Ulli Ritter another German who had a decent record in the late 50's to mid 60's with some interesting opponents that I think make him a good new HW to look at. Fights in Cologne, Germany on Sept. 10th, 1961. I'll be there, hope you will be also!

Glad to have all of them. Actually, they are all valued additions, even Eugene and Wyns. My historical replay is in 1882. Unlike Zech's career, many of the top fighters have numerous wins against fighters whose lifetime record on boxrec is 0-1, so there is no way to rate the opponents individually. Your Europeans have functioned admirably as generic victims and provided a variety of opponents for my replay.

Gerhard Zech's 15th fight.... 1961-09-10, Cologne, Germany

Ulli Ritter-4 Overall Rating
Nationality- German
b. 1933-08-26
d.
Career, 1957-1965
BoxRec. 024810
Record 26 wins / 19 losses / 9 draws / 7 KO

Yep, a 4! I kept simming and resimming and ended up with a 4 overall with the ratings below. I split the sims into 2 groups. 1 group of 22 fights against 1 rated fighters which I felt was best typical of the guys Ritter fought in those first fights. Then a 2nd group of 32 fights against guys rated 2-4 which I think is where the majority of those opponents would fall into that he fought in those later fights. After about 1300 bouts I was pretty satisfield with the overall results, Ritter doing most the winning against those 1's and sub .500 against the rest. The number of times he was stopped and the number of times he KO/TKO'd some one are a bit off, but close. His KO's/TKO's are pretty close but the numbers of time he's stopped are maybe on average for 54 bouts about 7 times where in real life he was stopped only 5 times. But, I'll live with that.

Ritter's career started out 19-0-1,4KO's agaisnt the lowest echelon of the European HW's defeating the likes of Robert Eugene a couple times, Bobby Warmbrunn and Alain Cherville. He beat an aged Joey Maxim adn fought a 10 round draw with Franco Cavicchi. Down hill after that though as he posted a 7-19-8,3KO's after that. He did manage another 10 round draw with Cherville and TKO'd Wim Snoek, but his losses included to Franco Cavicchi, Jimmy Slade, Pete Rademacher(remember him?), Tom McNeeley, Joe Erskine, Albert Westphal twice, Gerhard Zech twice, Ulli Nitzschke, Franco DePiccoli, Johnny Prescott twice, Wim Snoek and Kark Mildenberger. Ritter was rarely stopped in a fight, only 5 times in his 54 fight career. Three of those stoppages came in his last 3 fights, TKO's to German LHW Klaus Peter Gumpert and American Buddy Turman (45-15-2,32KO's) and a KO to Wilhelm von HOmberg another German HW of the 60's with an intersting record. Turman had some interesting opponents by way that make him I think a good HW to rate.

This was a scheduled 10 round fight. I really expected Ritter to give Zech a very tough time in this fight considering how his ratings worked out and the bit of struggling Zech's had in some of his fights. In the real thing back in 1961, Ritter did give Zech a tough fight, going the full 10 before Zech was given the decision.
In my replay here, Ritter started out strong winning a slight edge in the first 2 rounds. Zech came back to round 3 a bit adn then in round 4 Zech went to work and fast. He put Ritter to the canvas not once, not twice, but 3 times in the 4th round! Zech wins by TKO at the 2:28 mark of the 4th round and Gerhard is now 15-0-0 with 9 KO's.

Next up will be Ernie Cab in Berlin on 9/29/1961 adn then on 11/03/1961 Zech meets Joe Bygraves in Hamburg. A couple of HW's rated in the game, so we'll see how they do in the next day or so.

See ya soon....

Thanks for the bump vistaman!! Was just coming on line to post the results of Zech's next fight and didn't have to go look for the thread!

Gerhard Zech's 16th fight.... 1961-09-29, Berlin, Germany

Ernie Cab-1 Overall Rating
Nationality- United States
b. 1929-08-16
d.
Career, 1951-62
BoxRec. 011967
Record 12 wins / 16 losses / 1 draws / 7 KO

Cab is actually rated in the game already so no new rated fighter this time. Cab is actually Zech's first non-European opponent. He's 12-131 when he comes to Berlin to fight Zech having just come off a 10 round decision win over Sonny Moore, a journeyman HW of the 60's-early 70's who rung up a 25-36-3 record over his career and then a Cab stopped George(Scrap Iron) Johnson in the 6th round in his last fight. Johnson in only his 4th fight would go on to fight some of the top HW's of the mid 60's to early 70's time period.

Previous to those 2 fights Cab's biggest win in his career was a 6 round decision over Mike DeJohn. Some of the other "name" HW's that he'd faced up to then he all lost to, guys like Johnny Summerlin, Wayne Betheas, Sonny Liston, Cleveland Williams, and Ernie Terrell. After the Zech fight, Cab would fight only 2 more times, a 3rd round KO loss to Ernie Terrell and a 10th round DQ loss to Bill Nielsen.
Unless there's some inside story that I don't know about, Cab is another one of those interesting HW's that I'd like to know the thinking behind including him in the initial batch of fighters in the game. Just curious.....

In real life in Berlin, Cab took Zech the full distance in a 10 round fight with Zech coming away with the decision and his 16th win without defeat.

The replay was not even close or exciting. The first 2 round went pretty easy to Zech with Cab not being able to do a whole lot. Zech got a few jabs to win the rounds but nothing to get the crowd off thier feet. Then in the 3rd Zech started making his punches count. He staggard Cab into the corner with a quick combination moments after the bell rung then follwed that up with a couple hard jabs that got Cabl wobbling on his feet. Then came the end when Zech nailed Cab with a big roundhouse hook that sent Cab to the deck and a 10 count, giving Zech a sudden 3rd round KO at the 1:50 mark of the round!! Wow! Quick unexpected finish!

So, Zech's 16-0-0. He's got 10 KO/TKO's compared to the 8 he had in the real thing up till then. Not to bad a comparison I guess. Next up comes Joe Bygraves another guy rated in the game and then we'll have some new ones again that I'll have to work on the ratings for. This next fight will be interesting in that Bygraves managed to hand Zech his first loss in the real time.

Join me in Hamburg, Germany back in 1961 on November 11th to see if Bygraves can repeat his 4th round shocker over Zech.
