MERGER TALKS
The grumbling has started. With player costs skyrocketing, talent dilution and franchises in trouble the NHL and WHA have begun merger talks. Each league currently has 18 teams. The NHL always had a goal of 24 teams by 1980 so they are considering taking on 6 WHA teams to end the madness, with no more than half from Canada. The NHL may be talked into accepting more teams. VOTE Everyone can vote for 3 teams to survive. Every WHA team receiving a vote in this round will go to a final round of voting (unless only 6 teams receive a vote then we'll just take those). I will vote in the initial round. I will tie break if needed in the final round. WHA Teams: Atlanta Calgary Colorado Dallas Edmonton Hartford Houston Indianapolis Kansas City Los Angeles Sharks Miami Milwaukee New York Islanders Ottawa Portland Quebec Seattle Winnipeg So VOTE for 3 WHA teams to Survive |

also, if an existing NHL team is in deep trouble, like San Diego a while back, you can still either move them to a WHA city or be absorbed into a WHA team.

WHA Survivor Round 1
Well time to add my 3 votes: Winnipeg (I'm a homer) Houston Atlanta So going to the final round are 9 teams: Quebec Winnipeg Edmonton Seattle Indianapolis Miami LA Sharks Houston Atlanta Only 6 will survive. Vote for 3 teams Rank them 1 to 3. Each 1st place vote is 3 points. 2nd is 2 points. 3rd is 1 point. Top 6 total point getters will join the NHL for the 1979-80 season. I will be voting. |

Hartford was already eliminated but I see you didn't get a chance to vote.
I can add them back in if you want. But I also need your top 3 ranked in order. If you don't clarify I'll rank Winnipeg, Quebec and Edmonton in that order. |

Well time to get this ball rolling (puck sliding?)
I vote Edmonton, Houston and Winnipeg The WHA survivors are: Edmonton Houston Indianapolis Quebec Seattle Winnipeg Bringing the NHL to 24 teams and disbanding the WHA. Next expansion is not until the early 90's to match the NHL, unless there is demand. But will San Diego or other franchises move before then? |

1979-1980 Season in Review
Washington, Detroit, Minnesota and San Fran win their divisions. Houston, Winnipeg and Quebec from the WHA make the playoffs. Detroit beats Minnesota in the Final to win their 7th Cup! Per Andreasson of WPG led in Goals; Tanner Boyd of WSH led in assists and Jordan Quigley of MIN led in points. San Diego, despite getting to the semi-finals was last in attendance drawing just under 10,000 a game. VOTE - Move them (cities will be voted on later) or fund an arena expansion? 1980-1981 Season Review
Baltimore, Detroit, Winnipeg and Seattle won their divisions. Detroit won their 2nd straight cup beating a San Diego team that finished at .500. Seattle's Yashar Bourque led in goals with 64 setting a new record for goals in a season. He finished 2nd in points at 123. Winnipeg's Jessy Lamoureux led in assists 80 and points 124. He won his 5th MVP in his 7 year career. Seattle's 38 year old Charles Haley is now the all time point leader at 1,509. Teammate Ronnie Stadler is now the all-time assist leader at 930. Johannes Kaunisto of Edmonton won his 2nd straight Defenceman of the year - though the first 1.8 years were with Boston. San Diego again finished with under 10,000 fans a game despite making the Stanley Cup final. Remember to vote on their survival (see the preceding post). |
