This year didn't offer any big top unsigned draftees and the NCAA was in fairly good shape, with the exception of Santa Clara - they only had 14 players on their roster.

Top Prospects:
D.J. Leverton - Leverton was the top prospect in 1915 and had a pretty good rookie year, providing 1.2 WAR in only 74 games. He has played 5 straight seasons as a durable CF, missing only a few days here and there. He has won 2 gold gloves, made 4 all-star teams, won a silver slugger, and was the 1916 AL League Championship MVP.

J.R. Donahoe - The top pitching prospect won the top pitching award in 1919 and has made two all-star games. He just recently finished 2nd in pitcher of the year in 1920.

Draftees:
Phoenix Amoss - Amoss was the top draftee in 1915 and shot right through the minor leagues, starting 1916 as the Indians' CF. He won the MVP in his second year and has been to three all-star games, won two silver sluggers, and has the knack for coming up with a big hit. He was the 1917 AL Division Series MVP and 1918 AL League Championship MVP in the Indians World Series Season.

Denley Wright - Wright was the top high school draftee but failed to sign and went to Texas Tech. He was drafted 4th overall in 1918 and is in the Rangers' minor league system.

A.J. Aranha - He was the top pitcher in a light pitching draft and has been a solid starter for the Mets so far, making the 1920 all-star team and most recently receiving the NL League Championship MVP award in the Mets' World Series run.

Sam Sciascia - He was drafted before Aranha but hasn't had quite as good a career, with only one full MLB season just slightly above average. He has had injury issues, spending nearly 2 straight years on the DL with a torn UCL and nerve entrapment.

Award Winners:
Morton Zepp - He was the NL Rookie of the Year as a catcher and I really thought he was going to be Dan McKee plus. He still has a chance to put together a Hall of Fame career but his 20s weren't quite as dominating as I imagined. He has been to 4 all-star games and won 3 silver sluggers.

Other:
Antawn Colin - He pitched a perfect game in high school in 1915 and was drafted in the 9th round in 1916 by the Braves. He hasn't quite made it into the major leagues but is a reliever in their minor league system.

Murray Gunnell, 2B

The Yankees 2B for over a decade, Gunnell jumped right into the league, winning the MVP in his rookie season. He made three all-star teams, won two silver sluggers, and was part of the Yankees 1907 World Series team. He retires with the 10th most hits in Major League history.

Bill Desmond, SS

Desmond held down the Cincinnati Reds shortstop position for a decade, solidifying their defense up the middle. He was a positive defender at the most difficult infield spot all the way into his mid-30s. Two years (1908, his rookie year and 1912) were very special where he put both the hitting and fielding together and won the MVP. He also attended 4 all-star games and won two silver slugging awards.

Wes Grossman, RF

Grossman's first full year in the league was his best, winning the MVP as a 23 year-old in Seattle's outfield. He went to 4 all-star games, won 5 silver sluggers, one gold glove, and a World Series championship. In 1910, he had 6 hits (two triples) in an extra-inning game.

Career Stats: 7681 PA, 1888 H, .339 wOBA, 120 wRC+, 52.7 ZR, 40.4 WAR, 37.4 JAWS

Elijah Soares, RHP

Soares split his time between the Cubs and Phillies, surviving as a middle of the rotation starter for many years. He was the 1907 NL Division Series champion and a 1908 World Champ.

Bobby Murphy, 3B

Murphy had a few years of brilliance over a mostly average career. He won two silver sluggers and made the 1909 all-star game - the same year he was on the Phillies World Series team. He had 6 hits in a regular season regulation length game, one of 6 AL players to do so.

Anderson Billmyer, LHP

Billmyer was mostly a middle of the rotation guy, but for two years in 1907 and 1908, he was a top of the rotation anchor, finishing 2nd in pitcher of the year in the latter season. He held down a spot all year on the Braves 1917 championship team.

Curly Hunn, RHP

Hunn sat out most of his early 20s with no real obvious reason (like injury). Once he started pitching consistently, he was a solid starter, averaging 3 WAR in his age 28-33 seasons.

Sweeney McHale, RHP

McHale was drafted in 1905 out of Villanova and jumped right into the Angels' rotation, starting 30 games in 1906. He held onto that spot between the Angels and Royals through 1920 until age and injury in the form of a ruptured UCL caught up with him.

Lou Thornton, CF

Thornton was misplaced as a CF - he won the 1907 Rookie of the Year, made two all-star teams, and won 4 silver sluggers. He put up great offensive numbers but his defense was just too poor to hold up any overall value.

Curtis Adams, LHP

The 1911 Pitcher of the Year and 1915 champion with the Brewers, but his career peak was quite sharp. From 1909 to 1916, he came into the league, built up to an elite level, and dropped down to a middle relief role. This was most likely due to a torn rotator cuff which caused him to miss 11 months.

Rob Roe, RHP

Roe's career year was 1915 in which he went to the all-star game and won Reliever of the Year.

Rush Hemmes, 2B

Drafted 9th overall in 1914 out of Georgetown and has only been held back by recurring injuries. He won the MVP in 1920, Rookie of the Year in 1916, gone to 4 all-star games, won 4 silver sluggers, won the 1918 World Series, and was the 1919 AL Division Series MVP.

Noah Vilchez, RHP

A scouting discovery in 1910 who moved quickly through the minor leagues once he graduated from the Blue Jays International complex. He too has had some nagging injuries but still has provided well above-average value and made the 1918 all-star team.

Phoenix Amoss, CF

He is well-known as the 1st overall pick in 1915 after failing to sign out of high school and going to St Marys. He won the MVP, has been to 3 all-star games, won two silver sluggers, and was the 1917 AL Division Series MVP and 1918 AL League Championship Series MVP, winning the World Series with the Indians.

Theodore Della Francesca, RHP

He is also familiar as the 1915 Rookie of the Year, 1920 Pitcher of the Year, and 1920 all-star. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1912 draft out of Georgia.

Timothy Foot, LF

Foot was the 1914 Rookie of the Year and has consistently been a first-division starter in LF. He was drafted 35th overall in 1912 out of Arizona State.

Victor Handal, CF

Handal was a scouting discovery out of the Dominican Republic by the Padres in 1907 and took 6 years to get to the major leagues. He has mostly been around average but had two very good years in 1917 and 1918, closing in on the MVP level. In 1914, he was the MVP of both the Division and League Championship Series. He was also part of the Padres 1913 championship.

Daulin Jimenez, SS

Jimenez was a 4th round pick in 1912 by the Royals out of Fond du Lac High School by way of Panama. He has made three all-star teams and won a silver slugger.

Morton Zepp, C

Catchers are really hard to value and Zepp is no exception. He is a standout catcher but might never receive the recognition he deserves compared to batters at other positions. He has been to 4 all-star games, won 3 silver sluggers, and was the 1915 Rookie of the Year. He is a switch-hitting catcher who is exceedingly difficult to strike out and possesses an average glove. Zepp was drafted 31st overall in 1912 out of Florida.

Devon McFadden is back on the market and is still pitching at a high level as a 35 year old. He hasn't pushed into the top tier since 1916 but has been a consistent all-star, selected in both 1919 and 1921.


Tomas Reed is looking to continue his career as a 1B. He should have at the very least been moved to 2B a long time ago and may have the power to be a slugging bat-first 1B.

Top Prospects:
Phoenix Amoss - He just tied the MLB record for home runs in a season and won his second MVP award in his age 28 season.

Blaise Duarte - The top pitching prospect in 1916 has dealt with a couple of injuries - bone chips and inflammation in his elbow. He did make the 1919 all-star team and was the 1921 NL Championship Series MVP, helping the Padres win the World Series.

Draftees:
Brodrick Madison - The top bat in the 1921 draft immediately injured his kneecap after signing and had to sit out 5 months. That didn't hold him back as he made it up to the big leagues in 1918 just in time for the Indians World Series run. His first full season was 1919 where he came in 2nd in Rookie of the Year voting and has been an average 1B.

Kerry Law - He was the top high school draftee, selected 3rd overall in 1916. He still has great untapped potential and just recently finished his rookie year at 3B with the Blue Jays.

Jase Lee - He was the top pitcher in the draft and has missed a lot of time due to injury - torn labrum, torn flexor tendon, strained hamstring, torn flexor tendon, bone chips, and many other various issues.

Jeremiah Inman - He was selected 1st overall in front of Madison on the strength of his defense. He has been to 2 all-star games and won a silver slugger in CF.

Award Winners:
Cade Garrett - After his Rookie of the Year award in 1916, he made the 1917 all-star game and helped the Phillies win the 1919 World Series, all as an above-average CF. He then spent most of 1920 in AAA, spent all of 1921 in the Atlantic League, and retired at the end of the season.
