1899 NEW ENGLAND LEAGUE
Teams: Brockton (MA) Shoemakers Cambridge (MA) Orphans Fitchburg (MA) Manchester (NH) Newport (RI) Colts Pawtucket (RI) Colts Portland (ME) Phenoms Taunton (MA) Herrings Cambridge was replaced by Lowell (MA) in mid-season. Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G98_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="98" start_month="5" start_day="10" start_day_of_week="4" Each team plays 98 games. Teams play each other 14 times. Season starts on May 10 and ends on September 4 (Labor Day). Weekday games start at 3:00. Saturday games start at 1:00. Double-header games begin at noon and 3:00, except for those involving split home-and-home and alternating visiting teams, which begin at 10:00 and 3:00. No Sunday games. A very compact circuit with a lot of series lasting one or two games. Holiday double-headers often involve a visiting team playing in one city in the morning and a different city in the afternoon. The published schedule lists Pawtucket as playing in two different places on July 21. I assume this is a misprint and that one of the games should have been scheduled for July 31. 1931 MID-ATLANTIC LEAGUE
Teams: Beckley (WV) Black Knights Charleroi (PA) Governors Charleston (WV) Senators Clarksburg (WV) Generals Cumberland (MD) Colts Fairmont (WV) Black Diamonds Hagerstown (MD) Hubs Huntington (WV) Boosters Jeanette (PA) Jays Johnstown (PA) Johnnies Scottdale (PA) Cardinals Wheeling (WV) Stogies Jeanette was replaced mid-season by Altoona (PA) and then Beaver Falls (PA). Hagerstown was replaced mid-season by Parkersburg (WV) and then Youngstown (OH). Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G133_T12_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="133" start_month="5" start_day="7" start_day_of_week="5" Each team plays 133 games. Teams play each other between 8 and 17 times. Season starts on May 7 and ends on September 13. Weekday games start at 7:00. Weekend games start at 1:00. Double-header games begin at noon and 3:00 (weekends/holidays) and 4:00 and 7:00 (weekdays), except for split home-and-home double-headers, which begin at 10:00 and 3:00 or at 1:00 and 7:00. No Sunday games at Charleroi, Fairmont, Jeanette, or Wheeling. Another example of a league experimenting with a twelve-team format, and, like all such experiments in the railroad era, it was a failure. The Mid-Atlantic League downsized to six teams in 1932. 1896 NAUGATUCK VALLEY LEAGUE
Teams: Ansonia Blues Bridgeport Victors New Haven Edgewoods Shelton Angels Torrington Tornadoes Winsted Welcomes All teams located in Connecticut. Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G40_T6_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="40" start_month="5" start_day="6" start_day_of_week="4" Each team plays 40 games. Teams play each other 8 times. Season starts on May 6 and ends on September 19. Games only on Wednesdays and Saturdays, except for September 7 (Labor Day). Wednesday games start at 3:00, Saturday and Labor Day games start at 1:00. No double-headers. This was a Class-D league, probably semi-pro. Memorial Day and Independence Day fell on Saturdays in 1896, so there are no special holiday dates for those games. The scanned copy of the Sporting News in which this schedule appears is in pretty bad shape, but the format of the league made spotting and correcting errors fairly easy. Sunday games only at Montreal, Newark, and Providence. Interleague Schedule: SCHEDULE type="ILY_BGY_G160_SL1_D1_T8_SL2_D1_T8_C_" inter_league="1" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="160" start_month="4" start_day="11" start_day_of_week="4" Each team plays 160 games. Teams play each team in their own league16 times and teams in the other league 6 times. Season starts on April 11 and ends on September 22. Weekday games start at 3:00, weekend games start at 1:00. Double-header games start at noon and 3:00 except for split home-and-home double-headers between Minneapolis and St. Paul. Interleague games start on August 6. This is truly a one-of-a-kind schedule. After playing a 112-game championship season, the AA and IL planned to play an interleague round-robin tournament (3 home - 3 away) to determine which was the premier minor league. It is clear that the interleague games were not intended to count in the pennant races - they were, in effect, post-season exhibition games. All of the IL teams were to travel to AA cities from Aug. 6 to Aug. 29, and then the AA teams would travel to IL cities from Aug. 31 to Sept. 22. The plan, however, never got off the ground. I'm not sure when the decision was made to ditch the interleague games, but each league ended up playing a standard 154-game schedule in 1917. This must have seemed like a good idea at the time, but it's the sort of thing that probably appealed more to sportswriters than to ordinary fans, who weren't all that interested in knowing whether their league was better than some other league. In any event, 1917 was a bad year for minor-league baseball in general. The minors were still recovering from the Federal League war, and the US entered the Great War just prior to the start of the season. A number of established minors collapsed during the year, and there was talk of suspending all minor-league operations in 1918. In short, it was not a good year for experimentation. The AA and IL continued to hold the "little" world series between their pennant winners, but any talk of interleague play was quickly and quietly shelved. Attached are the schedules for each league individually, and one for the combined league-interleague schedules. American Association 1917.lsdl International League 1917.lsdl IL-AA 1917.lsdl |

1933 NORTHERN LEAGUE
Teams: Brainerd (MN) Muskies Crookston (MN) Pirates Eau Claire (WI) Cardinals Fargo (ND) Twins Grand Forks (ND) Colts Little Falls (MN) Superior (MN) Blues Winnipeg (MAN) Maroons Brandon (MAN) replaced Brainerd mid-season. Baseball Reference says that the Grand Forks team was located in East Grand Forks (MN). Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G112_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="112" start_month="5" start_day="4" start_day_of_week="5" Each team plays 112 games. Teams play each other 16 times. Season starts on May 4 and ends on September 4. Weekday games start at 7:00, weekend and holiday games start at 1:00. Double-header games start at noon and 3:00, except for split home-and-home double-headers between Crookston and Grand Forks and between Brainerd and Little Falls, which start at 10:00 and 3:00. No Sunday games at Winnipeg. BR doesn't list the Little Falls team, meaning that the circuit may have only had seven teams. As always, this is the schedule that was published prior to the opening of the season, and doesn't take into account any changes that may have occurred afterwards. Northern League 1933.lsdl |

1937 WESTERN INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE
Teams: Lewiston Broncs Spokane Hawks Tacoma Tigers Vancouver Maple Leafs Wenatchee Chiefs Yakima Pippens All teams located in WA except for Lewiston (ID) and Vancouver (BC) Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G140_T6_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="140" start_month="4" start_day="27" start_on_weekday="3" Teams play between 131 and 140 games. Teams play each other from 23 to 31 times during the season. Season starts on April 27 and ends on September 12. Weekday and Saturday games start at 7:00. Sunday and holiday* games start at 1:00. Sunday and holiday double-header games start at noon and 3:00. Weeknight (twi-night) double-header games start at 4:00 and 7:00. No Sunday games at Vancouver. The published schedule lists Vancouver playing a double-header against Lewiston on May 16, which is a Sunday. I believe this is a misprint, as these are the only Sunday home games for Vancouver. I moved them to May 17. *Holidays include: 5/30 - Decoration Day (US); 6/9 - King's Birthday (Canada); 7/1 - Dominion Day (Canada); 7/4 - Independence Day (US); 8/2 - Civic Holiday (Canada); 9/6 - Labo(u)r Day (all). Independence Day and Decoration Day fell on a Sunday in 1937 -- it's not clear if the following Mondays were treated as holidays, so I treated them as regular weekdays. This is a PCL-type schedule where teams play single games Tue-Sat and double-headers on Sundays and holidays. It also resembles a PCL schedule in that there is a wide gap between the number of games played by the teams. Attached is a modified schedule in which Vancouver plays double-headers on Sundays and on Canadian holidays. That, along with a couple of other tweaks, evens out the totals so that teams play either 140 or 142 games. Western International League 1937.lsdl Western International League (modified) 1937.lsdl |

1893 SOUTHERN LEAGUE
Teams: Atlanta Windjammers Augusta Electricians Birmingham Grays Charleston Seagulls Chattanooga Warriors Macon Hornets Memphis Fever Germs Mobile Blackbirds Montgomery Colts Nashville Tigers New Orleans Pelicans Savannah Electrics Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G132_T12_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="132" start_month="4" start_day="10" start_day_of_week="2" Teams play 132 games. Teams play each other 12 times during the season. Season starts on April 10 and ends on September 26. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend and holiday* games start at 1:00. Double-header games start at noon and 3:00. Sunday games only at Mobile and New Orleans. The Sporting Life says that the league adopted a "double season" - in other words, a split season - but doesn't say when the split occurs. A quick review of the schedule shows that the first half almost certainly ends after the double-headers on July 4. *Holidays include: 4/24 - Confederate Memorial Day (AL & GA); 5/30 - Decoration Day (LA & TN); 6/1 - Statehood Day (TN); 6/5 - Jefferson Davis Day (AL); 7/4 - Independence Day This is another league that experimented with - and then quickly dropped - a 12-team format. The most interesting thing about the schedule, though, is the person who made it: The man responsible for drafting the schedule, frustrated no doubt by the novelty of devising a 12-team table, went to a print shop to drop off his half-finished work. An employee by the name of Mayme Flatz recognized it as a baseball schedule, and, although she had never been to a game, volunteered to draft the schedule, which met with the league's unanimous approval. Miss Flatz refused compensation for her efforts, but the League voted to present her with a souvenir spoon from each of the twelve league cities. You can judge whether Miss Flatz did a good job or not. There are some homestands/road trips that, even by railroad-era standards, are unusually long. Chattanooga, for instance, starts a homestand on June 14 that runs through July 15 - 27 games in 32 days. The second-half schedule is almost identical to the first-half schedule. 1897 ATLANTIC LEAGUE
Teams: Hartford Bluebirds Lancaster Maroons Newark Colts Norfolk Jewels Paterson Silk Weavers Philadelphia Athletics Reading Actives Richmond Giants Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G144_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="144" start_month="4" start_day="26" start_day_of_week="2" Team play between 139 and 144 games. Teams play each other between 19 and 22 times during the season. Season starts on April 26 and ends on September 20. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend and holiday games start at 1:00. Double-header games start at noon and 3:00. Sunday games only at Newark, Paterson, and Philadelphia. Because only some of the teams could play at home on Sundays, the league loaded up on Sunday dates for those clubs. That was fairly typical of the time, but it led to some teams playing more games than others. The Athletics had games scheduled for Sundays, but Philadelphia still banned Sunday baseball, so the games were probably played across the river in New Jersey (the Phillies had previously played some Sunday dates in Gloucester City). Unusual for this time period, the Atlantic League allowed the Athletics to use "farmed" players from the Phillies. As a result, Baseball Reference lists the Athletics as a Phillies' farm club, although the affiliation between the two teams was probably more informal than that. Most other minor leagues in this era had rules outlawing the use of "farmed" players, although those rules were seldom rigorously enforced. The Paterson Silk Weavers had a very promising young infielder on their roster in 1897 by the name of Honus Wagner. Atlantic League 1897.lsdl |

Teams: Bartlesville (OK) Bucs Hutchinson (KS) Larks Joplin (MO) Miners Muskogee (OK) Tigers Ponca City (OK) Angels Springfield (MO) Cardinals Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G145_T6_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="145" start_month="5" start_day="5" start_day_of_week="3" Teams play 145 games. Teams play either 72 or 73 home games. Teams play each other from 27 to 32 times during the season. Season starts on May 5 and ends on September 7. Weekday and Saturday games start at 7:00. Double-header games (every holiday and Sunday) start at noon and 3:00. The league played a split schedule, but my source (Sporting News, 2/27/36) doesn't say when the split occurred. My best guess is that it was either after the games of July 2 or the double-headers on July 5. The league scheduled its all-star game on July 15, one of the two off-days in the entire season. The schedule doesn't list Bartlesville playing at Ponca City on July 2, even though the other teams play on that date. I assumed that was a misprint. Western Association 1936.lsdl |

1917 TEXAS LEAGUE
Teams: Beaumont Oilers Dallas Giants Ft. Worth Panthers Galveston Pirates Houston Buffaloes San Antonio Bronchos Shreveport (LA) Gassers Waco Navigators Schedule Characteristics: SCHEDULE type="ILN_BGY_G154_T8_C_" inter_league="0" balanced_games="1" games_per_team="154" start_month="4" start_day="5" start_day_of_week="5" Each team plays 154 games. Teams play each other from 20 to 28 times during the season. Teams play either 76, 77, or 78 home games. Season starts on April 5 and ends on September 3. Weekday games start at 3:00. Weekend games start at 1:00. Holiday (7/4 and 9/3) double-header games start at noon and 3:00. No breaks in this schedule - 154 games in 152 days. There were a number of errors in the published schedule; most were easy to solve. Beaumont and Galveston were scheduled to play each other and two other opponents on April 13. I moved their game to the only empty spot on the calendar, July 9. Texas League 1917.lsdl |
