05/28/1972 - Giants Get Road Win, 4-1; Kong Homers Off Stone Again

The San Francisco Giants took Atlanta's best shot and still were able to claim a win at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. The final score had San Francisco getting past the Braves, 4-1. Braves' starter George H Stone went 9 innings and allowed 3 earned runs, striking out 6. Jerry Johnson earned the save for San Francisco, his 8th of the year. San Francisco, now 20-30, holds last place in the NL West Division.

The Giants got a big at-bat from first baseman Dave Kingman. Clearly happy over solidifying his position as Firstbaseman, Kingman was 1 for 4 with a home run off LHP George H Stone, good for 2 RBI. It was his 12th home run of the season gave San Francisco a 2-0 lead.

"We'll savor this win," Kingman told the San Francisco Chronicle, "then get ready for the next game."

05/30/1972 - San Francisco beats LA on Kingman's Walk Off 3-Run Homer in the 9th

The San Francisco Giants knocked off the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-6, at Candlestick Park. Dave Kingman, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason San Francisco won. The first baseman went 4-5 with a home run, a triple, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 4. John W Morris got credit for the win, improving to 2-0. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.2 innings. The Giants are now 21-31, while the Dodgers fall to 27-22.

Kingman had a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth. On a 1-1 fastball from LHP Jim Brewer, he banged a 3-run shot to left-center, giving the Giants a 7-6 lead. It was the 13th home run of the year for Kingman.

"It wasn't a pretty victory," said Kingman, "but we got it done."

1972 May Snapshot

We are at the 1/3 point in the 1972 season, with 53 games played. Despite his low average, Kong is on pace for a 40 HR, 100+ RBI campaign. He's also on pace for 200+ strikeouts, which would eclipse the 189 mark his teammate Bobby Bonds set a few years earlier.

It's a beautiful morning...

72 and sunny in Columbus this Saturday morning. Set up on my screened in porch for some big time OOTP today. Is 11:15 too early for a beer? Maybe one coffee first...

06/09/1972 & 06/10/1972 - Black Hills Flood

The Black Hills Flood of 1972, also known as the Rapid City Flood, was the most detrimental flood in South Dakota history, and one of the deadliest floods in U.S. history.

The flood took place on June 9–10, 1972[1] in the Black Hills of Western South Dakota. 15 inches (380 mm) of rain in a small area over the Black Hills caused Rapid Creek and other waterways to overflow. Severe flooding of residential and commercial properties in Rapid City occurred when Canyon Lake Dam became clogged with debris and failed in the late evening hours of June 9th resulting in 238 deaths and 3,057 injuries.[2] Over 1,335 homes and 5,000 automobiles were destroyed. The value of property damage was estimated to be over US $160 million in 1972 dollars ($936 million in 2017 dollars[3]).

The clutch at-bat in the bottom of the ninth belonged to Clemente. Facing Steve Stone with the bases loaded, the Pittsburgh right fielder had a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Game over, walk-off style!

"I'm glad I could get it done when the game was in the balance," Clemente said in his postgame press conference

06/26/1972 - Kingman in the Midst of a 10-Game Skid

San Fransisco Giants 1B Dave Kingman has been battling a slump over the past two weeks. During that stretch, he is 4 for 38 (.105) with no extra base hits, 7 BB and 8 K's. His average has dropped to .197.

He is still leading the club with 17 HR and 44 RBI, and manager Charlie Fox has no plans to take him out of the lineup. "Kid has to learn to work himself out of it," said Fox.

Cincinnati starter Jack Billingham was credited with the win after throwing 134 pitches over 8 innings. His record now stands at 5-5. Clay Carroll notched his 11th save in 12 chances.

The Reds had to work out of trouble in the bottom of the ninth. The score was 9-6, Cincinnati, with no one out. San Francisco, with a runner on 1st, was mounting a threat. Dave Kingman dug in at the plate, but on a first pitch fastball, he popped out.

07/11/1972 - Giants Score Late, Upend Mets, 5-3

The San Francisco Giants defeated the New York Mets, 5-3, in NL action at Shea Stadium, with San Francisco pitcher Juan Marichal named player of the game. Marichal went 8 innings to notch the win. 07/15/1972 - Phils Nip Giants, Kingman Hurt

Philadelphia beat San Francisco at Candlestick Park, eking out a 7-6 win. The win was due in large part to second baseman Terry Harmon, who earned player of the game honors. The Phillies bumped their record to 46-45 with this latest triumph.

The result might have been different for Philadelphia, had it not been for Larry Bowa. The shortstop produced a 2-run single in the top of the ninth inning to put the Phillies ahead, 7-6. For the game, Bowa had 1 double and 1 single in 5 at-bats.

"One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Harmon told the Philadelphia Citizen

Giants first baseman Dave Kingman pulled up lame after legging out a double in the bottom of the 2nd. He was replaced by Ed Goodson, who went 2-3 with 2 RBI.

07/16/1972 - Kingman Back in the Lineup, but Fails in the Clutch

The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the San Francisco Giants, 5-1, in NL action at Candlestick Park, with Philadelphia pitcher Chris Short named player of the game. Short, the winner, moves to 7-5. He threw 6.2 innings of 1-hit ball, while fanning 2 and giving up 4 walks. Mac Scarce, credited with the save, is now 1 for 2 in save opportunities.

In the bottom of the eighth, Dave Kingman stood in the box, looking for a pitch to hammer. The Giants were trailing 4-1, but had runners on 1st and 2nd. That's when Mac Scarce made a terrific pitch and Kingman grounded out. Gone was the dream of a San Francisco comeback.

Philadelphia has 3 straight wins, San Francisco 3 straight losses.

06/23/1972 - Kingman at the All Star Break

Good power and production, but little else...

He is actually underperforming in terms of average and slugging compared to his real life full season numbers in 1972:

But he is tied for 3rd in the NL HR race, behind Braves 3B Darrell Evans and the Cubs LF Billy Williams:

07/28/1972 - Braves Subdue San Francisco, 4-2

The umbrellas came out during the Atlanta-San Francisco contest at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.

The Atlanta Braves got a stellar performance from pitcher Ron Reed, who handcuffed the San Francisco offense en route to a 4-2 win at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. Reed got the win, improving to 10-8. He allowed 5 hits and walked 2 over 9 innings. Reed allowed 2 earned runs.

Sonny Jackson, who leads the NL in triples with 10, aided the Atlanta cause with a run-scoring single in the bottom of the fourth. For the game, the left fielder was 1 for 4.

"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Jackson.
