How scary would the Padres have been if they had kept Kingman for more than a partial season, teamed with sluggers Hendricks and Winfield, all in their prime?

09/04/1977 - San Diego Blanks Cubs, Jones at His Best

Randy Jones hurled a fine game for the San Diego Padres at Jack Murphy Stadium today, holding the Chicago Cubs to 4 hits in a shutout win.

"When he started out, his command wasn't that good, but he's a tough guy," San Diego manager said. "The more pitches he throws, the better his command is."

The left-hander had 4 strikeouts and no walks in the 9-0 victory.

"An outstanding job," Chicago manager said. "We couldn't get anything going. Every time we got a hit, he got out of the jam. He pitched a terrific game."

09/06/1977 - Angels Take a Chance on Muscle in Person of Kingman

By Ron Rosen
September 7, 1977

Dave Kingman, the alleged slugger, will finish the 1977 baseball season as a California Angel and, if the Americans can sign him for 1978, what's another couple hundred grand out of Gene Autry's saddle bags?

Autry and Angel general manager Harry Dalton took Kingman off the San Diego Padres' hands yesterday for the $20,000 waiver price. Yes, he cleared the National League, where he made his marks in tape-measure clouts, in striking out (about once every three times up), and in discontent over a $75,000-$80,000 salary he insisted was one quarter of his worth. The former Giant, former Met batted .251 with 18 HR, 41 RBI in 56 games with San Diego, which obtained him from New York in June, to boost his overall 1977 figures to .239, 33 HR, 90 RBI as he plays out his option.

Dalton wasn't dreamer enough to envision Kingman pulling out an instant division title, but "With that kind of power and run production, we want a chance to see if we can sign Dave and make him part of our 1978 team."

He gave up 2 runs on 7 hits. He now sports a record of 6-10. California has 3 straight wins, Milwaukee 3 straight losses.

Dave Kingman, who is on pace for 110 RBI this season, aided the California cause with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first off LHP Jerry Augustine. For the game, the first baseman went 1-4 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.

"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Kingman.

09/08/1977 - White Sox Pull Off Thrilling Win in Extras

The Chicago White Sox knocked off the California Angels, 11-8, at Anaheim Stadium. Jorge Orta, who captured player of the game honors, was a big reason Chicago won. Gary Ross was collared with the loss. The second-place White Sox now have a 5-game winning streak.

Orta had a game-changing single in the top of the tenth. On a 2-0 sinker from Gary Ross, he banged a run-scoring single to left, giving the White Sox a 9-8 lead. It was the 103rd hit of the year for Orta.

09/15/1977 - Kingman Now a Bronx Bomber

Just hours before a game that was seen by an often unruly crowd of 55,218, the Yankees announced that Kingman, who has been waived around this season more briskly than a leaf in autumn, had been blown back to New York.

The Yankees, in a surprise move, acquired the unsigned Kingman from the Angels for a cash amount significantly over the $20,000 waiver price, plus a minor league pitcher, Randy Stein.

The enigmatic slugger, who started his travels this year at Shea Stadium with the Mets, then paused briefly in San Diego and Anaheim before completing his round trip, can play in the remaining regular‐season games. But he would not be eligible for the pennant playoffs or the World Series, if the Yankees go that far.

"If I go out there and help the team win, that's all you can do," said Morris.

1977 Final - Mr. Kingman's Wild Ride

Kong finished the season with solid production:

He again surpassed his IRL stats by 11 HR and 29 RBI thanks to playing everyday:

But he would not have placed in the Top 10 in HR or RBI this season, as a lot of other sluggers had banner years, particularly Jim Rice (Triple Crown Winner) and Eddie Murray:

12/01/1977 - Cubs Sign Kingman, Mets Hire Maddox in Five‐Year Contracts

By MURRAY CRASS DEC. 1, 1977

The Mets, who banished Dave Kingman from their family last June, welcomed Elliott Maddox into the family last night at virtually the same time Kingman was joining the Cubs in Chicago.

Maddox and Kingman, who both played for the Yankees at different times, signed five‐year contracts in ending their free‐agent status. No terms were disclosed in either case, but Kingman, it was learned, received about $1.4 million, while it was believed Maddox hit the million‐dollar mark.

Kingman, who spent his high school days in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights, will play at Wrigley Field, where at times he has devastated the Cubs with mammoth home runs.

Kingman wanted to play for the Yankees, having enjoyed his two‐week stay following 1977 tenures with the Mets, San Diego and California. But the Yankees would give him neither a no‐trade provision nor more money (he suggested an additional $200,000) in lieu of the provision.

After meeting with George Steinbrenner in New York Monday, Kingman flew to Chicago Tuesday. Yesterday he and his agent, Lowell Morse, met with Bill Wrigley, Cubs’ president, and Bob Kennedy, the general manager, for about three and a half hours and reached agreement at about 7:30 New York time.

Kingman, who will he 29 years old on the same day as Maddox, Dec. 21, was enticed into becoming a Cub by a package believed to include $250,000 bonus and a salary of $225,000 a year. That totals $1,375,000.

Morse would neither confirm nor deny the figures, but he did say that the money in the first three years of the contract was guaranteed and that there was a no‐trade provision for the first two years.

“I'm very happy,” Kingman said by telephone from his mother's home in Arlington Heights. “I don't want to make comparisons, but I feel it's all been worthwhile:”

Kingman, who had rejected the Mets’ spring offer of $200,000 a year for anywhere from two to six years, obviously still harbors bitter feelings toward the Mets. He didn't want to get into that aspect of his life, though. But he did comment on his bargaining experience with the Yankees.

“To this moment,” he said, “I still don't understand the thinking of some people. Some areas are very confusing. I tried to clear them up, but the situation wouldn't resolve itself. But at least I've found a home for quite a few years and I think my performance is going to show it.”

While being shuffled from team to team and city to city this year, Kingman batted only .233, but he hit 37 homers and drove in 107 runs. The 6-foot-6-inch righthanded hitter is the first free agent the Cubs have signed in the two years of free agency.

04/16/1978 - Cubs Sneak Past Pirates, 5-4

The Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates obliged those fans who came to Wrigley Field looking for a good time.

Chicago first baseman Dave Kingman had 3 ribbies while helping his team defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 5-4. Woodie Fryman was the winner. Over 8.1 innings, he allowed 4 runs on 10 hits, with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts. Bruce Sutter picked up the save for Chicago, his 2nd of the year.

Kingman had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the eighth. On a 0-1 slider from LHP Will McEnaney, he banged a 3-run home run to left, giving the Cubs a 5-4 lead. It was the 1st home run of the year for Kingman.

"We'll relax tonight and enjoy this win," said Kingman.

The Cubs have stumbled out of the gate, getting only their 3rd win in 9 games.

04/20/1978 - Cubs Lose 6-5, Despite Big Day From Kingman

Chicago got a terrific performance from first baseman Dave Kingman, but it wasn't enough to beat the Montreal Expos. Montreal won the Wrigley Field contest, 6-5. Kingman was the player of the game despite being on the losing side. He went 2-4 with 2 home runs, the first off LHP Rudy May and later off RHP David Palmer. He drove in 4 runs and scored twice. David Palmer picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 2-1. Donnie Moore was tagged with the loss. Picking up the save was Dan Schatzeder, his 2nd.

The Expos got a big at-bat from pinch hitter Wayne Garrett. For the game, Garrett was 1-1 with a home run. In the top of the ninth, with the bases empty, he stroked a solo home run. His 1st home run of the season gave Montreal a 6-5 lead.

"I just try to see the ball and put a good swing on it," said Garrett.

The Cubs fall to 4-8 and continue their lackluster start in 1978.
