The Chicago Cubs will end the season with a sixteen game road trip. Today is the first game of a three game series in Boston against the Beaneaters. The Cubs are now 12-0 in the month of September and have won sixteen of their last seventeen. The Beaneaters have lost four of their last six. The Cubs lead the season series 15-4. This will be the last series of the season between these two teams. The Cincinnati Reds have been mathematically eliminated from the National League Pennant race. Tenney scored on a Howard groundout to short. Dolan drew his 40th walk of the season to put runners at the corners with two out. But Strobel grounded to third to finally end the inning. In the top of the second, on an Evers single to center, Bates threw Tinker out at home as he was trying to score from second. In the top of the third, a base hit by Chance brought Steinfeldt home from third and the Cubs were on the board. Schulte then followed with his own RBI single to tie the game. Tinker then singled to extend his hit streak to 14 games but Howard threw Chance out at home as he was trying to score from second and that retired the side. Tenney led off the bottom of the third with a double but was injured sliding into second and had to leave the game. He was replaced by Ernie Diehl. Howard would bring Diehl home with a two out single. After three: Boston 3 Chicago 2. In the top of the fourth, Kling tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Steinfeldt later gave the Cubs the lead with an RBI single. It was the Cubs 10th hit of the game. In the top of the fifth, a throwing error by Brain with two out allowed Chance to score from third on an Evers grounder. In the bottom of the fifth, Bates scored on a wild pitch. After six: Chicago 5 Boston 4. In the top of the seventh, Slagle gave the Cubs some breathing room with a two run single. The Cubs would go on to load the bases with one out. Steinfeldt grounded into the 4-2 fielder's choice and there were two down. Hofman then grounded to third to retire the side. In the top of the eighth, after Chance singled to lead off, Schulte laid down his 20th sacrifice hit of the season. Chance, however, would be stranded at third. In the bottom of the ninth, Bridwell got a two out double for the Beaneaters 10th hit of the game. He would then score on a Tinker throwing error. Bates then came to the plate representing the tying run but grounded to the pitcher to end the game. Final score: Chicago 7 Boston 5. In the bottom of the seventh, Pfeffer struck out for the 20th time of the season. In the top of the eighth, the Beaneaters committed their third error of the game. But a double play ended the inning. In the bottom of the eighth, the Beaneaters loaded the bases with one out. Strobel watched ball four to walk in another run. Needham grounded into the 6-2 and therewere two outs. Pfeffer then grounded to short to end the inning. Down by three, the Cubs went down in order in the top of the ninth as Big Jeff Pfeffer picked up his fourth win of the season against the Cubs.
