NLDS Game 4

National League Division Series Game 4:
9th October 2015

Arizona Diamondbacks - Washington Nationals @ Nationals Park

ARI: SP Jaime Garcia 6-10 4.42 24GS 153K 183.1IP
WSH: SP Stephen Strasburg 18-6 2.08 33GS 311K 251IP

We decided to rest Lester today, as he still was pretty tired after the shutout, while the Nats started Strasburg on four days rest. This may be Garcia's chance to show us he is worth $9+M next season, playing on the biggest stage for the D'backs since 2011.

Strasburg walked Polanco leading off the 1st, and Gregorius bunted him over to second. Goldy grounded one near the mound... and legged out a infield single, advancing Polanco to third base. Gallo only was 1-10 this NLDS... but CAME THROUGH with a single to right, and Goldy went from first to third despite Harper throwing a cannonball to Zimmerman... and had to be taken out with hamstring soreness in front of a shocked crowd. Lamb worked a 2-2 count... and singled into left for another run. Lutz and Hicks got K'ed by Strasburg, but we played from infront and the Nats were without Harper. Top second, Wieters singled, Polanco doubled and Owings got K'd, bringing up Gregorius, who put a real charge in it.... to RF for a sac. Polanco scored on a wild pitch, and Strasburg looked tired, needing 50 pitches for 5 outs.

A leadoff jack by Owings in the 4th got us ahead 5-0, and Strasburg loaded the bases in the 5th with no outs, and left after a RBI-groundout, and we destroyed the Nats pen like we destroyed Strasburg, while Garcia pitched a complete game.

NLCS Game 1

National League Championship Series Game 1:
13th October 2015

Arizona Diamondbacks - St. Louis Cardinals @ Busch Stadium

The Cardinals seem to have a rotation of aces. Michael Wacha(19-10 2.25), veteran Adam Wainwright(18-8 3.35), Sheby Miller(15-8 3.39) and young Carlos Martinez(12-4 3.26). Only good news for us is, they are all right handers, and we have a left handed heavy lineup that just killed the premiere RHP in Stephen Strasburg for 9R in 11.2IP. Their offense however limbs behind their pitching this season. LF Will Venable(.236/.279/.420 17HR 46RBI) is still in the leadoff spot against RHP, while Kolten Wong(.257/.319/.386 8HR 42RBI) leads off against LHP. Their biggest sluggers in the middle are RF Oscar Tavares(.241/.290/.405 21HR 77RBI) and 1B/DH Brandon Belt(.288/.362/.476 24HR 76RBI), while veteran LF Matt Holliday(.280/.350/.483 28HR 98RBI) is out with a fractured rib suffered on September 24th, and is not on the playoff roster.

ARI: SP Jon Lester 1-0 0.00ERA
STL: SP Adam Wainwright 1-0 1.13ERA

While Waino got through the first 1-2-3, Lester had 4ER before getting an out when Dayan Viciedo came through with a 3-run bomb after an RBI single by Molina. Our first hit coutesty of Hicks in the 2nd was with two outs and no effect, while Lester loaded the bases in the 2nd , but got out of it. A DP erased Gregorius in the 4th, and both pitchers settled in. Lester was over 100 pitches after six, and we went to the pen. Christiani got us two hitless innings again, but we couldn't get to Thatcher in the ninth, and got shut out by Wainwright(8IP 4H 0ER 6K) and Thatcher.

SP Jon Lester 6IP 8H 4ER 3BB 4K
RHRP Nick Christiani 2IP 0H 0BB 1K
Lutz 2-3
ARI 0 STL 4
W: Wainwright(2-0 0.56) L: Lester(1-1 2.40)
STL leads the series 1-0

We never got to the veteran righthander, and Lester was blown up early. I decided to go with Lester in game one instead with Corbin, because Lester had this great game 1 start against the Nats, but it seems it wouldn't have mattered, as we simply had no offense.

NLCS Game 2

National League Championship Series Game 2:
14th October 2015

Arizona Diamondbacks - St. Louis Cardinals @ Busch Stadium

ARI: SP Patrick Corbin 0-1 6.43ERA
STL: SP Michael Wacha 2-0 0.00ERA

Wacha has not allowed a run in 14.2IP on 9H this postseason, and has struck out 15. Oh joy. The first hit was notched by Gregorius in the 1st, and was left on. He also had out second hit in the 3rd, and this one went to dead center 434ft home run, and we had Wacha at 52 pitches, with Corbin at 40 after three innings. It was a wet day, with streches of rain, but no delays at least. After five innings, both teams had 2H apiece, and we still led 1-0. Then, Polanco singled, and Gregorius improved to 3-3 with a base hit up the middle, bringing Polanco to third. Goldy popped up on a low fastball, and Gallo once again worked a full count... and somehow got a low slider that would've hit the ground for a base hit to right. Polanco scored, Gregorius to third. He later scored on a Lamb sac, and Corbin now had a three run cushion.

Shocked by that, he allowed three consecutive two out hits, and both Molina and Taveres scored on a 2-RBI single by Viciedo. Another single brought him to third, but we got Dan Uggla to pop out. Corbin was left in one batter too long, and had runners at first and second with nobody out. He was hooked for Tolleson right away, who got a K and a foul pop, for two outs, but a lucky bounced grounder by Molina went past his glove into center, game tied at 3. Doolittle was on in the 9th for STL, and Lamb got us going with a 1-out double, and Hicks was walked to get to Lutz... who struck out, as well as Wieters.

Overtime... Top 10th, Hicks strained his hamstring, and had to leave for Bryan. We went to Rowen, who piched a clean 11th, and Goldy got on in the bottom with a single... to get erased on a Gallo DP. De La Rosa stranded Carpenter at third in the 12th, and Polanco got on with one out next inning... and got erased on a DP by Gregorius.... A walk by Uggla and a single by Jay with two outs got the crowd into it, but Asdrubal Cabrera grounded to Mr. Gregorius. Goldy singled past Cabrera to lead off the 14th, but 2 K and a flyout stranded him. CMON! Rosenthal was able to clean De La Rosa's mess, and stranded ANOTHER runner at third. Wieters got a double to left with one out, top 15th, and Owings singled to get runners at the corners. Polanco up against Phelps.... one loud out for the lead.... IT WAS LOUD and not an out. 3-2 fastball to right field for a RBI-double. We stranded two in RISP, and Rosenthal was in line for the win.

With one out, Uggla doubled, and Jay and Cabrera were up next. Jay... looked at a fastball right in the zone and struck out... ONE OUT AWAY... 2-2 pitch … curveball.... CABRERA WENT AROUND, THE D'BACKS WIN IN 15 INNINGS.

NLCS Game 3

National League Championship Series Game 3:
16th October 2015

St. Louis Cardinals - Arizona Diamondbacks @ Chase Field

CF Aaron Hicks was diagnosed with a strained hamstring(3 weeks), and is out for the playoffs.

1B Jordan Patterson(23, 2*) was claimed from the Colorado Rockies. He can play 1B,3B,LF,RF and will compete for a bench spot next year. He has three options left, and I guess they wanted to smuggle him through... bad luck guys.

STL: SP Shelby Miller 0-1 6.43ERA
ARI: SP Archie Bradley 1-0 0.00ERA

Bryan will start in center field and bat 8th against the RHP. Bradley has a red flame besides his name, and we hope to keep it that way at home, and hoped for a long outing to rest the pen. A 1-2-3 inning by him, followed up by a 2-out solo shot by Goldy got the game rolling in the right direction. Lamb walked to leadoff the 2nd, and Wieters advanced him to 2nd with a one out hit, but Bryan and Owings made outs. Bradley breezed through the early innings, and Polanco reached leading off the 3rd again, but Miller suddently got three quick outs. Both pichers matched zeroes till the 5th, when another solo shot woke up the crowd... Matt Wieters to CF, 437ft, 2-0.

A DP ended another chance that inning while Bradley had a 3-hitter through six. Goldy was up in the 6th with one out... and slashed ANOTHER ONE INTO THE BLEACHERS 3-0. Bradley got tired in the 8th, and was pulled after allowing a run to get Buchter on against the Cards lefties, and he got a easy out from Wong. Rosenthal was summoned to save the game against his former team, and gave up a solo shot on his third pitch to Tavares. A strikeout and two singles by Belt and Carpenter got everybody sweating, and Geovany Soto was up with one out.... BALL FOUR BASES LOADED. John Jay next.... single into center 4-3 STL. Rosenthal got two quick outs after that, but BLEW THE SAVE. His replacement, Joe Thatcher K'ed Wieters and Bryan, and got Owings to ground out.

NLCS Game 4

National League Championship Series Game 4:
17th October 2015

St. Louis Cardinals - Arizona Diamondbacks @ Chase Field

STL: SP Carlos Martinez 0-0 0.00ERA
ARI: SP Jaime Garcia 1-0 1.00ERA

We decided to give the ball to Garcia after his great game four start against the Nats. The Cards got Yadier Molina batting 2nd, despite him being DtD with a bruised hand after getting hit by a unlucky swing by Owings.

Garcia got a easy out when Tavares was caught stealing, and Gregorius got a leadoff single by Polanco erased on a DP. But, trouble wasn't far away, as Viciedo and Belt singled with no outs in the 2nd for runners at the corners. Veteran Uggla got a sac, but that was all they got, because Jay and Peralta got greedy and swung at balls away. Two walks and a base hit by Lutz loaded the bases in the bottom, and Bryan was up, being 0-6 in the postseason. Make it 0-7. Owings with two outs... popout to 1B. Polanco singled to center to lead off the 3rd, and Gregorius did the same, and suddently we had runners at the corners with nobody out.

Goldy hit a loud out to right for a sac, tied at 1, and Gallo ended it with a tailor made DP ball to Wong. Viciedo and Belt got back to back singles again, and with one out, Uggla hit a LOUD ball to left... caught... Viciedo tags up... the throw... OUT AT HOME A CANNONBALL BY LUTZ! The crowd was full in it, and got even louder when Lamb doubled to lead off the 4th. Lutz featured his arm last inning... and his power this inning... depositing a ball in the right field seats 3-1 lead. Goldy singled in another run in the 5th, and Martinez looked shaky all the way.

Garcia was getting into problems in the 7th, and had to concede a run on another close play at home, this time on a throw by Polanco, but a great 5-4-3 DP got him out of the inning. A leadoff walk ended his game, and Tolleson was on for the 8th. He got one out, but Tavares drove in a run with a single, and Gardi let Tolleson pitch to Belt.... BIG MISTAKE that left the park, 442ft 5-4 Cardinals. Thatcher was on again for the 9th, and a base hit by Owings got us going. Polanco bunted him over, and we pinch hit Robertson for Gregorius against the left hander Thatcher. A deep flyout advanced Owings to third, and Goldy was up. Fastball... loud... deep …Jay is there. Ballgame.

SP Jaime Garcia 7IP 8H 3ER 1BB 2K

Lutz 3-4 2RBI HR(2)
STL 5 ARI 4

REALLY? We get 9 scoreless innings in game two from the pen, and then they give away two leads in game three and four in front of our home crowd. And why not go with the lefty against Belt Mr. Gardenhire?...(PS: My fault, but why not blame the manager?)

NLCS Game 5

National League Championship Series Game 5:
18th October 2015

St. Louis Cardinals - Arizona Diamondbacks @ Chase Field

STL: SP Adam Wainwright 2-0 0.56ERA
ARI: SP Jon Lester 1-1 2.40ERA

This is the game we signed Lester for. Gregorius got the first hit once again, but was left on in the 1st. Lester conceded a solo shot by Viciedo in the 2nd, and we left Gregorius and Wieters at second the next two innings. Another solo shot, this time by Belt made it 2-0, and Wong was stranded in the 5th at second. Wainwright was dealing... until he suddently called for the trainers after a groundout by Wieters bottom 5th, being apparently in pain, and he left for Juan Nicasio[/B].

Nicasio gave up two consecutive singles, and we had runners at the corners with Polanco up... who singled to left, cutting the Cards lead in half. Gregorius with a chance.... DP... Lester got into trouble in the next half inning, walking Belt AND Viciedo for Uggla. When Uggla left the batters box, Lutz didn't even bother to move in left field... 5-1 STL. Lester completely imploded in the 7th, and we got the pen involved, who walked another guy to load the bases. A run scored on a sac, and with two on... Dan Uggla... forget about the playoffs, another 3-run bomb, and our season ended in 10-1 loss at home.

The next Morning

Bureau of the GM
October 19th, 9:00AM

We waited for everybody to drop in, while the TV showed pre-reports for the St. Louis Cardinals - Boston Red Sox World Series, covering the Wainwright injury and possible replacements. Also a big news was Bryce Harper signing a 6y/$50M extension in Washington, and Strasburg signing a 1y/$10M deal buying out his final arbitration year.

The mood was tense because we dropped out of the playoffs, and because I never stated to my staff that everything above the owners season goal (around .500 season) was a bonus generating revenue and a higher budget for next season. To ease their fear of getting all fired right on the spot (do they think I'm a tyrant?) I opened up the meeting:

"Ok thank you all for coming. Yes, we lost the NLCS yesterday, and we are all disappointed, especially after the game three and four losses. But, you and this team really exceeded my expectations and our owners expectations, and I wanted to thank you all for the great work. We had a lot of player movement, and made our team better, younger and cheaper, while keeping a solid organisational depth, highlighted by a AAA title. I think we all agree that we got our work cut out for the other minor league teams apart from the short A team, and we will discuss this together with other things now. Suggestions?"

Both Theo and our minor league coordinator Jeff Kent had a strong oppinion about that. Both agreed that investing in a rookie friendly and more competent minor league coaching staff is a great first step, and cutting older players <25 to get the system younger really was the right move, but there is more. Epstein voted for a higher scouting budget, arguing that we have to hit in the later draft rounds and in international free agency. This would also allow us to continue the offensive trading philosophy we had this season. Kent added as valid point that investments into the system in general would really allow our minor league coaching staff to to get more talent developed.

After Gardi added his oppinion, stating that he was very happy with the play of callups Robertson and Bryan, it was my turn. "We have generated a lot of revenue with a low salary structure, and with Arroyo's $11M coming off the books, I expect a budget increase by at least $8M back to the 2014 budget. We generated $26M of profit and were able to erase $10M of debt, so there should be some money for both if the boss doesn't lowball us. Other suggestions for improvement?"

Gardi came forward right away and mentioned the need of a shutdown lefty or at least a third reliable left hander that could be stashed in AAA if needed, and asked about the chances of resigning the suspeded Marshall. Our bench coach, Alan Trammell, went ballistic right away, telling everybody he would leave when we resign Marshall. I quicky told both that I have no intentions to resign a busted and suspended player for $6M, especially not a 32 year old reliever, but that we will look into the offseason market for LHRP.

Speaking of lefties, Gardi announced his concerns about our lefty heavy lineup and asked about adding another right handed bat as everyday player. A heated discussion between Theo, Gardi, Trammel and Jane, my secretary and personal sabermetrician, started, and we will be looking for a right handed LF with above average defense to replace or platoon Lutz, with Bryan being the backup plan. This was based on the opinions by Gardenhire and Epstein, stating that Lutz was overperforming this year, and Jane adding a chart of his strike zone, pointing to a big hole in his swing.

Next topic was the future of Jaime Garcia and Paul Goldschmidt. I mentioned Garcia's regular season performance compared to his $10M salary. Gardi admitted, that he is not sure about who is the real Garcia, regular season or playoff. Theo defended his scouting ratings right away, and Kent mentioned that Paxton struggled in AAA, and Almonte in AA, so trading away would really cost us depth. Jane threw her oppinion into it, pointing out that his regular season FIP was only 3.73, and his BABIP .351, so he had a lot of bad luck. We ended up with a consens, we quietly look for a trade including a young, equally talented pitcher, and only pull the trigger if its a blockbuster trade, and reevaluate next trade deadline.

Goldschmidt was discussed briefly, as we all agreed that his right handed power bat is really important in our lineup, and worth the the $5.85M next year, reevaluation next trade deadline. His likely replacement would be AA 1B Matt Olson, another left handed bat, making the need for more impact righties more pressing.

After the meeting, me and Jane started planning the offseason with this input:

Goals:
1.) Improve scouting and player development budget
2.) Acquire a shutdown LHRP or at least more depth in that spot(not exceeding $3M)
3.) Scout the market for right handed LF with better defence than Lutz and at least equal bat
4.) Carefully explore the market for Jaime Garcia and young impact starting pitching in trade talks
5.) As always, look for bargains like Jon Lester

Boston Red Sox Take World Series
stadiumreport.bnn
October 25, 2015

The 2015 Major League season came to a close today at Fenway Park, where the Boston Red Sox whipped the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 and won their 1st World Series in the new history.

Boston got there by compiling a 96-66 mark during regular season play and claiming the second spot in the American League Eastern Division standings.

CF Jackie Bradley Jr. was named World Series MvP after hitting .526/.526/.527 with 3 home runs and 11RBI's, including a 5 hit performance in game three, cashing in for 3R and 5RBI's.

The Red Sox won the series 4-1 in games.

First Day of the Offseason

Bureau of the GM
October 27th 2015

To do list:
  • Check for open coaching positions
  • Make decisions on team options
  • Arbitration decisions
  • Make decisions about free agents/minor league free agents
  • Take a look at the new budget

1.Check for open coaching positions
Our pitching coach, Walt Walker has decided to retire, and we have a vacancy in single A Visalia at manager. I offered the job to recently retired closer and now wanabee manager Joe Nathan.

Our system has two LEGENDARY pitching coaches(Bobby Abreu and Gerald Laird), who have next to no experience, but are way better than every free agent option, so Bobby Abreu will be called up as pitching coach for the big club. Dick Pole(Excellent) was offered the pitching coach in single A Visalia, and Gerald Laird was brought up to AAA Reno.

2. Make decisions on team options
Bronson Arroyo announced his retirement, so there are no players with team options left.

3. Arbitration decisions
Due to our young team, and our early extensions to arbitration eligible players, there will be only three arbitration cases.

C Bobby Wilson(32,1*) AAA stats .246/.327/.404 12HR 52RBI 0.5WAR -0.2ZR
Arbitration estimate $950k, will be offered no arbitration, we can find a third/forth backup catcher like him as minor league free agent or on the waiver wire.

UT Yurendell De Caster(36,1*) MLB stats .242/.306/.348 2HR 10RBI 21G -0.1WAR
Arbitration estimate $800k, will be offered no arbitration, we added Robertson and Patterson as capable utility/backup players who are cheaper, better and younger.

RF Xavier Paul(30,1*) AAA stats .265/.316./.431 15HR 57RBI 121G 0.8WAR
Arbitration estimate $800k, will be offered no arbitration. He is another left handed bat, and we have better backup options, as he is a under average CF and RF defender.

4.Make decisions about free agents/minor league free agents
All notable minor league free agents got a minor league extension offered, and only LHRP Nelvin Fuentes(26,1,5*) has his offer still pending.

RHRP Joel Hanrahan(34,2,5*) MLB stats 2-1 3.46 2SV 52IP 0.7WAR
Wants $1,1M, we have younger and cheaper options available in AAA

LHRP Sean Marshall(33,4,5*) MLB stats 2-1 5SV 2.08 39IP 0.7WAR
Wants 2y/$15M deal, is still suspended for 12G, will be offered a kick in his butt on his way out.

5.Take a look at the new budget
Our budget increased by $14M, up to $126M. That, and Arroyo leaving gives us plenty of budget to spend on scouting, player development, and some possible free agents. We also have $8M of cash laying around in cool black trunks in my office

Diamondbacks Trade Drury to Rays for Odorizzi
stadiumreport.bbn
October 28th, 2015

The Arizona Diamondbacks have released a statement confirming the trade of 23-year-old third baseman Brandon Drury to the Tampa Ray Rays for 25-year-old RHPJake Odorizzi. The deal was finalized today.

In his lifetime totals, Odorizzi has 2 saves with a 11-17 record and a 4.47 ERA.

D'backs GM K.C. Martin told the media, that "Odorizzi gives us some much needed depth in the rotation, and will compete for a starting spot or a bullpen spot next spring. Drury was great for us as part time DH, but he would've been a backup player all the way from now on, and we wanted to give him a chance to play everyday."

-------
Odorizzi is rated as 2* starting pitcher with great stamina, great defense and decent stuff, but will most likely report in AAA next year as another insurance SP. Another reason for the trade is that Theo rated Paxton down to 1*, and we want at least two good starters in AAA in case of injury.

The obvious guy to throw money at would be Justin Upton, but even with a lowball offer, it would be 4y/$68M with a player option, and I guess that would've been called out fast by other big market teams.

Arizona, Minnsota Trade Players
stadiumreport.bbn
November, 21st 2015

The Arizona Diamondbacks have finalized a deal that will send 30-year-old minor league starting pitcher Bo Schultz and 29-year-old minor league third baseman Gordon Beckham to Minnesota for 27-year-old LHRP Kevin Chapman. Minor details still need to be worked out before the trade becomes official, but the players involved are expected to be with their new clubs soon.

In his career, Schultz has crafted a 1-5 mark with a 6.71 ERA and tossed 56.1 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .328 against him and he has 28 strikeouts. Beckham has played six years for the Chicago White Sox, and has a career .248 batting average with 58 home runs. He was not offered arbitration after the 2014 season, and the Diamondbacks picked him up as minor league free agent.

Chapman's career stats show a 15-6 record, 156 appearances, 31 saves and a 2.27 ERA. He has 189 strikeouts in 150.2 innings pitched. Chapman is coming of a 4-3 16V 3.35ERA season in 40 appearances for the Twins. They reportedly have serious budget problems, and traded Chapman away to save some money.

Arizona Ships Minor League RHRP Vargas to Boston
stadiumreport.bbn
November 29th, 2015

The Arizona Diamondbacks addressed a concern today, coming to terms with the Boston Red Sox on a trade that will send 19-year-old minor league reliever Emilio Vargas from the Diamondbacks to the Red Sox in exchange for 26-year-old RHP Anthony Ranaudo.

Ranaudo is regarded as a capable starting pitcher, but played out of the bullpen for the Red Sox last year, posting a 1-0 record with 2 saves and a 1.59ERA in 28.1 innings. His role with the Diamondbacks is undecided, and he could be part of one of K.C. Martin's strange trade gambles.

In other news:
C Alex Avila and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed on a 4y/$67.2M contract, solidifying the catching position for the next years.

Rule 5 Draft

The Rule 5 draft is upon us meaning teams across the ML will be looking to find a diamond in the rough. Said one GM, "You never know who you might find by taking a chance on one of these guys. You always have to remember that these guys all grew up being great ball players. We're looking for guys that can make it at the Major League level that may have fallen between their organization's cracks."

We protected
1B Matt Olson(AAA)

There were a couple of interesting guys out there, like 1B Matt Snyder(NYY,4*), but all were taken before we could pick. We lost nobody, and picked nobody.

In other news:
1B Chris Davis(29,4*) announced that he will join Alex Avila and the Philadelphia Phillies for a 4y/$76.8M deal.

The rebuilding(?) Toronto Blue Jays announced the signing of SP Jordan Zimmerman(29,3,5*) for a 4y/$83.6M today.

Winter Meetings Day 1

Whatever the weather might be outside, the weather inside is almost guaranteed to be warm as the Major League Winter Meetings are set to begin. The three days of nearly constant trade and contract talk is sure to heat up the rumor mill and it won't all be hot air as some deals that will fire up the imagination of fans and media members alike can be anticipated. With so many different club officials in close quarters, potential dealmakers can expect to get a quick reaction to their offers.

Offseason summary and goals
So far, we got our LHRP in Kevin Chapman(27,4,5*) from our friends in Minnesota, and we got ourselves some cheap SP depth with Ranaudo and Odorizzi. For the Winter Meetings, we will try to get a great deal for Garcia + Paxton/Odorizzi or Ranaudo/Paxton, so we keep one of the guys for depth, and of course get a SP in return. IF we get enough budget room to wiggle with after that deal, I will offer a contract to Justin Upton...

In other news:
The Oakland Athletics were able to snag one of the best outfielders in the game(when healthy). RF Jason Heyward(26) signed a 5y/$80,100,000 deal(very un-Billy Beane like).

Breaking News & Winter Meetings Day 2

Diamondbacks, Athletics Deal Star Players
stadiumreport.bbn
December 11th, 2015

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced a major trade involving several big-time players. The press was told today that the Diamondbacks had consummated a deal with the Oakland Athletics with Arizona giving up 22-year-old minor league starting pitcher Michael Feliz, 27-year-old starting pitcher James Paxton, 19-year-old minor league left fielder Doak Dozier and 29-year-old starting pitcher Jaime Garcia in exchange for 26-year-old starting pitcher Sonny Gray.

Lifetime Garcia has chalked up 59 wins and 48 losses and compiled a 3.59 ERA. Feliz was part of a trade in 2014 with the Astros, but never impressed, and was 7-13 5.97ERA last season in single A. Paxton struggled last year in the desert, going 6-8 4.50ERA, same as Garcia(6-6 4.68). Doak Dozier was the 2nd round pick of the D'backs in 2015, and has hit .269/.318./336 in R ball.

Since his debut in the league, Gray has posted 30 victories and 34 defeats with an ERA of 3.98, and was 12-15 with a 4.16ERA with a bad A's team last season. Gray is ranked #15 in our SP ranking, and is signed for the minimum for this season, and arbitration eligible for 2017.

Dan Rosenhall of BNN News reported that K.C. Martin pitched an offer to LF Justin Upton right after the trade, using the budget room to improve their production from the right side of the plate, and their defense in left field, and putting LF Donald Lutz on the hot seat.

In other day 2 news:

The San Francisco Giants went out and took action after their disappointing 81-81 finish, and signed 1B Edwin Encarnacion(32,3,5*) for a 3y/$18.8M deal, and SP Jhoulys Chacin for a 6y/$84.6M deal, improving offense and pitching with two big signings.

Winter Meetings Day 3/4

The rest of the Winter Meetings rather quiet.

TheBlue Jays dealed RF Jose Bautista to the "Win Now" New York Mets for minor league RHRP Duane Ward Jr.(19,1/5*) and minor league 3B Cole Tucker(19,1/3*).

The Cincinnati Reds unloaded fireballer LHRP Aroldis Chapman(27,5*) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for prospects, including minor league LHRP Addison Albright(18y/ 0,5/4,5*).

Winter Meetings Summary
I don't how how, but the package we sent over to Oakland did work out, and we got ourselves another young, controllable pitcher with three years of arbitration left. Giving up Paxton and Feliz doesn't really hurt us, as Epstein now sees both as 1* players. Dozier hurts a bit, as we see him as 3,5* prospect, but RF is Polanco's for the next years, and (hopefully) Alex Jackson's soon, so he was expendable.

I was able to offer Justin Upton a 4y/$68.6M deal with year four a team option, and right now he likes that deal, so we wait along if he accepts. He IS compensation eligible, so we would lose our first round pick next year, around #24, but we will live through it.

Arizona Makes Big Splash in Free Agency: Signs LF
stadiumreport.bbn
December 20th, 2015

The Arizona Diamondbacks pulled out all the stops today to announce the signing of left fielder Justin Upton. The 28-year-old is one of the game's preeminent playmakers and has definitely proven why he was such an attractive signing.

The contract is a 4-year deal worth $68,560,000, and our fan poll showed a uptick in fan interest up to 70/100.

His career numbers show Upton is hitting .273 with a total of 177 home runs. He will join a impressive outfield, playing alongside Aaron Hicks and Gregory Polanco.

------
Barring a Lutz trade, maybe involving Odorizzi or Ranauldo for a big prospect, or some minor deals, this should be it. We had some funds available after all that, and upped the player development funds to $27.7M and the scouting funds to $13M.

Another pitcher going over to the AL will be SP Mat Latos, who just signed a 2y/$13.8M deal with the Houston Astros.
