May 2040 - In Review

Players of the Month - May 2040

Delaware Conference
Matsuo Picks Up Best DE Conf Batter Honors for May: Even though he is a newcomer to DELMARVA Baseball League, Naganori Matsuo put up some good numbers in May and earned the DE Conf Batter of the Month award. He was one of Chadds Ford's offensive leaders with a .330 average in 28 games. He also racked up 13 home runs, 28 RBIs, and 24 runs scored. This year Matsuo has hit at a .299 pace and produced 38 RBIs, 17 home runs and scored 36 runs.

Georgetown Starter Named DE Conf's Best Pitcher: Whether Chris Brock stays in Georgetown beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In May the 32-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award. He put up some fancy numbers with a 5-1 record and an ERA of 1.74. In 46.2 innings he struck out 33, surrendered 38 hits, 11 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 6 starts last month. For the season Brock has compiled a 10-2 record with a 2.42 ERA.

Sensational Month for DE Conf Rookie: Naganori Matsuo is a latecomer to this league. The 33-year-old Chadds Ford right fielder is putting up quality numbers, even though he's not your traditional rookie. On the heels of posting a .330 average, the Delaware Conference named him May's Rookie of the Month. He hit 13 home runs last month, knocking in 28 runs and scoring 24 runs. He banged out 35 hits and drew 16 walks to post a .416 OBP. For the season, Matsuo is hitting at a .299 clip with 17 home runs, 38 RBIs and has scored 36 runs. He has 60 hits, 32 walks and a .400 on-base percentage.

MarVa Conference
Gette Top Hitter in MV Conf in May: Ulbrecht Gette may be much younger than other hitters in the MarVa Conference, but he performed like a seasoned veteran in May to win the Batter of the Month award. The 23-year-old Martinsburg left fielder hit .396 with 15 home runs, 33 RBIs and 26 runs scored. This year Gette is batting .293 with 19 home runs. He has scored 41 runs and driven in 45.

MarVa Conference Names #1 Pitcher in May: Veteran Joey Hamrick put together quite a successful stretch in May for the Chesapeake Blue Crabs, earning himself the MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month award. Hamrick racked up a 5-1 record in 6 starts, posting a 2.37 ERA over 49.1 innings and striking out 21. For this year Hamrick has chalked up 7 wins and 2 losses in 11 starts with 40 strikeouts in 87.2 innings and a 2.98 ERA.

High on the Hit Parade, Liriano Voted #1 Rookie: Lorenzo Liriano proved to be one of the MarVa Conference's preeminent rookies last month, putting up some sensational numbers to take the Rookie of the Month trophy. In May the catcher for Washington had a .351 average, stroked 26 hits, 6 home runs, drove in 14 runs and drew 18 walks for a .478 OBP. A look at his current stats shows Liriano with a .301 average, 11 home runs, 27 RBIs and 26 runs scored. He has played in 46 games.

2040 First Year Player Draft

DBL News: First-Year Player Draft:

Lost in all the hoopla of today's amateur draft are the young men who won't be going first, tenth or even fiftieth. Many of them will probably never make DELMARVA Baseball League rosters, but one and all will be spurred on by the possibility that someday they'll be playing on a championship club. Alexandria, Port Penn, Dover, Harpers Ferry and Harrington will have the first five choices. BNN analysts report that these players are likely to be high picks in the 2040 draft:

1. Stephen Rose, 22 year-old RHP out of college.
2. Eric Dudley, 20 year-old RHP out of college.
3. Steve Richards, 21 year-old RHP out of college.
4. Wes Palmer, 22 year-old RHP out of college.
5. Mike Hardin, 22 year-old LHP out of college.
6. Drew Klein, 18 year-old LHP out of high-school.
7. John Mason, 21 year-old LHP out of college.
8. Midnight Bramblewood, 21 year-old RHP out of college.
9. Tom Brown, 22 year-old LHP out of college.
10. Palmer Goeble, 17 year-old RHP out of high-school.

The top pick could be a game changer, and has been many times for many times, just look at the history of the first rounders in the DBL:

DBL History of #1 Picks:
Here is a look at the past #1's, there is a lot of talent there. Jorge Moran fell just short of the Hall-of-Fame vote this year, but he should be a lock next. First-Year Player Draft - First Round Results:
Alexandria Growlers: Drafted SP Ralph Treemont in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 1, Pick 1, 1st overall pick).
The 22 year-old Treemont has the chance to be a game changer! He was one of the guys I was hoping would slip to #7 and would have been worth the $6 million he wants to sign. He has the ability to be a 5* pitcher in the realm of Miguel Contreras and Ricardo Gonzalez. He will be an interesting guy to watch.
Camerons thoughts: "Treemont has excellent tools and emerging as an elite starter"

I don't have a good track record here in Chadds Ford with my #1's, but then again I guess that is how you look at it. Loeffler (2031) and Wallstreet (2038) have the ability to be talked about as 'greats' where Douglas (2032), Summers (2033), Pearl (2034), Carillo (2035), and Maxwell (2036) are all contributing on the big league level. I guess I should be happy with those results. I guess it is a little harder when so many of them have moved on already... and for players like Loeffler and Douglas just didn't want to stay here. Not being able to win, well that hurts...

History of Cannons #1's

AA | 3B | #54 in DBL (ETA: 2042)

================================================== =
2040 1st Year Player Draft:

Drafted SP John Chapman in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 1, Pick 8, 8th overall pick).
STF: 8/16, MOV: 11/13, CON: 5/13
"He has the potential to be a #1 or #2 starter"

Drafted SP Santiago González in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 2, Pick 1, 42nd overall pick).
STF: 5/15, MOV: 10/15, CON: 6/15
"The makings of a big-league, big-time bullpen anchor"

Drafted RP Alexis Cox in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 2, Pick 4, 45th overall pick).
STF: 12/20, MOV: 8/12, CON: 6/11
"This right-hander should play an important role in a big-league bullpen at some point in his career. Has closer potential!"

Drafted 3B Claudio Valdéz in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 4, Pick 8, 98th overall pick).
CON: 7/12, GAP: 6/12, HR: 1/4, EYE: 5/9, Ks: 2/14
"May make a career at a high minor league leavel" (not much faith)

Drafted SP Keith Flanagan in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 7, Pick 8, 181st overall pick).
Drafted 2B Chris Henderson in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 8, Pick 8, 209th overall pick).

CON: 3/11, GAP: 1/7, HR: 4/13, EYE: 3/9, Ks: 4/11
"Will hold down a big-league job fo r along time... A quick back with a knack of making hard contact"
** Henderson is an "impossilbe" sign, but I am going to through some money at him and see what happens. He is 5* prospect out of HS, so I figured it can't hurt. He either signs or doesn't, but win the 8th round I figured it was worth the try.

Drafted SS Fernando Reyna in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 9, Pick 8, 237th overall pick).
Drafted SP Robert Turman in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 11, Pick 8, 293rd overall pick).
Drafted SS Mike Russell in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 12, Pick 8, 321st overall pick).
Drafted C Vincent Crosby in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 13, Pick 8, 349th overall pick).
Drafted SP Pepe Vargas in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 14, Pick 8, 377th overall pick).
Drafted SP Claude Edgeworth in the 2040 first-year player draft (Round 15, Pick 8, 405th overall pick).

Not sure how I feel about the overall draft, but I guess I should be happy that I have some decent players. Maybe, just maybe Chapman, Gonzalez and Cox will be the stars we are hoping... only time will tell.

Oh and Henderson... Well I offered him $2.5 million, probably not enough, but like I said worth the chance.

GM Notes:
We finished May strong and had a winning week. Have to enjoy winning, but here we go again. Everytime I think about trading away everyone we start to win... its almost like the game can read my mind. I am going to let it ride for now and we will see what happens. I like the players, ok, they may not be the 'best' players around, but I like them... they are my players. I just want to win with them... I guess I need to think about that is liking the players greater than wins??

Speaking of winning, what is going on with our play at home? We just can't get W's at home and that drives me nuts. How do you play so much better on the road? Have I created this team to NOT fit our stadium? But really look at those stats, we lead the league in average and 4th in OBP! How can we be 7th in runs scored? Is it a speed issue? Or maybe my guys just can't hit with runners on... just doesn't make sense.

I am hoping I don't jinx Felipe Suarez, but I signed him out of Cuba for a back-up infielder he wasn't supposed to hit... yet he leads my team in hitting with a .363 average and has earned more playing time. He has played not good enough defense comitting 8 errors in 94 TC's at 3B... But until Tully Maxwell starts to hit (or vice versa) Suarez is my 3B. Maxwell is only hitting .279-3-18 with 147 PA's... Someone has to give me more.

Speaking of Maxwell I am torn about putting him on the DL or not. He is DtD for 1-2 weeks and the injury should only effect his running... I am just a little worried that playing him will lead to a bigger injury or a lingering injury like Carillo had to start the year... something to ponder.

Now here we start off June 9-games out of first and 5.5 out of the wild card. Our season isn't lost yet, but we can't fall too much further back. I think we will have a better chance chasing down the Iron Pigs than we will the Braves and Clippers, but either way I am trying to remain positive and beleive that we have a chance to make the playoffs this year. I really want to win here, there is nothing better than W's and everyone, even these players, now that (Luckily we still have a "happy" team here).

Maybe it is time for me to "change" my thought process and go with the team that plays the best defense, such as Kyle Glendinwyn and not Jorge Matos, Tully Maxwell and not Saurez, and the OF is just a mess... I wonder if that is something I need to look into, better defense more more defense runs saved, which should lead to more W's... Maybe I need to take a deeper look into the metrics and pick the 'best' team that way.

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
Closer Alvin Richardson hasn't been great this year, but he has been solid and one of our better relievers. He is on pace for 55-saves, which will be awesome for this team. The downfalls are his 4.19 ERA and his 4 L's and 3 BS's. I can see him being our close for a few more years, before his cost is too much but till then I hope he can continue this success... However has struggled in June going 0-2, 2 BS, and 3 SV, but a crazy 18.90 ERA and 3.00 WHIP. I need him to get back on track if we expect to compete!

One guy I am totally confused about is SP Yaz Ito. I am really debating about sending him down to AAA in hopes he can get things right, but it is hard to send down a guy making $3.3M! He is 3.6 5.49 with a 1.59 WHIP, allowing 97 hits in 78.2 innings, while only striking out 28. Not good. The most confusing thing is looking at his ratings. My scout, Tad Cameron, has Ito as a 5* pitcher with ratings of 14/14/15, where OSA has him as a 1* pitcher with ratings like 1/6/1. I know he isn't that bad, and I am starting to think he isn't as good as Cameron believes either... There is quite a bit of interest floating around out there for him, which makes me believe I need to hold on to him... maybe back to the pen?

With Wallstreet heading to the DL I needed a CF and that lead to me calling up rookie Antonio Garza. Garza has the glove to play in the bigs, and if he hits he could up being a Glove Wizard winner for many years... but the bat is the question. In his first 3-games he hasn't had much luck going 1-12 (.083) with an RBI. He has only struck out 2-times, which makes me feel a little better about his lack of hits at least it means he is making contact. Maybe this week will be his breakout week.

Tully Maxwell and Felipe Suarez both hitting I have decided to mix up the lineup some. Maxwell will be the starting 3B (better glove) and Suarez will head to the DH and replace Ambrose Gutierrez. I would want to play Gutierrez much more, but with his bad defense he doesn't see the field much. I am hoping with Garza and Maxwell playing more in the field that our defense rating goes up. Fingers crossed! The other big roster move is Yaz Ito will head to the bullpen while Theo Bomas will get a few starts. Only 2-week till the All-Star break.

Now it seems like we just can't a) win at home and b) win against good teams which means this is going to be a LONG season. I am hoping that we can put up some good numbers and start getting W's against the better teams. If we keep dropping 2-games per week then we are in trouble. This week is going to be tough with the Sixteens and our nemesis the Beacons. I want to finish June with more W's than L's and it won't be easy.

Transactions:
Traded 27-year-old reliever José Ruíz to the Dover Generals, getting 35-year-old starting pitcher Zak Fischer, retaining 75% in return.
Placed CL Alvin Richardson on the 11-day disabled list, retroactive to 06/15/2040.
Placed SP Zak Fischer on the 40-man roster.

Placed 2B Juan Guzmán on the 11-day disabled list, retroactive to 06/14/2040.

Purchased the contract of 2B Salvador Ferrer from Triple A San Juan.
Signed international amateur SP Martín Agustino out of Venezuela to a minor league contract.
Demoted CF António Garza to Triple A San Juan.
Placed SS Murray Wallstreet on the active roster.
Activated SS Murray Wallstreet from the disabled list.

** I finally got rid of Jose Ruiz! I dealt Ruiz (11 G, 1-0 9.31) to the Generals for SP Zak Fischer (3-6 6.61), and the Generals agreed to take on 75% of Fischers salary. He will be my #4 start, as I sent Theo Bomas to be my closer (at least for the time being). Fischer is due $3.8M next season, but has a $330,000 team buyout... so guess who won't be around next year.

Injuries:
2B Juan Guzman, Severe hip strain, 5 months, 11-day DL
OF Juan Rosales, Broken bone in elbow, 3-4 months, 11-day DL
SS Murray Wallstreet, Wrist soreness, ready to be activated
3B Tully Maxwell, Fractured thumb, 6 weeks, 11-day DL
SP Juan Cuesta, Torn rotator cuff, 6-7 weeks, 11-day DL
CL Alvin Richardson, Elbow inflammation, 8 weeks, 11-day DL

This was an awful week as far as injuries go. We lost Guzman (.270-2-11), Maxwell (.298-4-27) who was playing with a sore knee, and our closer Richardson (22 SV) who was on pace to hit the 50-save mark!

Draft:
1st Round: John Chapman (SP): 2 G, 1-0 1.69, 16.0 IP, 22 K
2nd Round: Santiago Gonzalez (SP): 6 G, 1-0 0.00, 5 SV, 6.0 IP, 9 K
2nd Round: Alexis Cox (MR): 6 G, 1-0 2.25, SV, 4.0 IP, 10 K
4th Round: Claudio Valdez (3B): 1 G, 0-2, R, BB

Other/Roster News:
The week began with me moving Yas Ito out of the starting rotation and putting in Theo Bomas. I am getting excited about Juan Cuesta coming back, but who knows if he will be as good as he was before the injury.

I also move Antonio Garza to the #9 hole and move Tully Maxwell, who has been red-hot to the #2 hole. Hopefully the good defense and new order will give me some W's.

GM Notes:
Game 69 was the epitome to how this season is going... We crushed the ball all over the park, picked up 15 hits had 3 players with 3, and 2 who added 2 more. Yet we only scored 3 runs! That is my offense in a nutshell and I am not sure what I need to do. I am thinking about changing the lineup to start the second half so Wallstreet, Takahashi and Matsuo get more AB's, but we will see... Believe it or not we are only 4 out of the Wild Card!

MR Gregorio Costello came to me and asked to be in the rotation. So he will get a start next week and I will probably end up making him my #5 and moving our new Zak to the bullpen, as well as trying to trade Zak.

When the team starts getting slammed with injuries it makes me think more and more about just fire-saleing everyone. Then I have to bring myself back to reality and realize that is a bad idea. I just don't have enough star power to bring back anyone that would be worth it in the end... and honestly, that surprises me. I truly thought this team was packed with potential, real potential not fake potential.

At the beginning of this year I had such high hopes for this club, I really thought we would be able to compete with big boys, but after 72 games I am starting to see the reality that we may not even be a .500 club. Sad to say I am not sure why, I mean I guess it is obvious we just don't have the talent, but we should. What do I need to focus on mostly? Defense? Play off .700 DEff Offense? Get some hits with runners on? Pitching? All of it? Where to start?

At this point I (think) am going to keep trucking with the players I have. Hopefully, the younger guys come around and the older guys can start to lead as they should. I really believe we have a good team here a lot of talent, much better than what our record shows. Only 6-games till the All-Star break so things could change but I'd like to ride this season out with these guys, no matter how long it may end up being.

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
Gallin Krall was on fire as soon as I told him he was going to be a starter, but recently he has started to slip. His May was outstanding going 4-0 in 6 starts with a 1.13 WHIP, his first two games in June were just about the same, but the last two? Yikes. He just lost it, 17 runs in 13 innings. He has thrown 85.2 innings this seasons, he threw 89.1 last year in 65 games, and hasn't broke more than 100 since 2036 as a AAA starter. Is he starting to suffer some tired arm? Is this a sign of bag things to come (ie injury)? I am hoping as we hit the all-star break he will be able to rest and come back on the flip side ready to throw!

Speaking of pitchers, I need to get rid of Zak Fisher. Fisher isn't good and I have very little faith he will fit in here in Chadds Ford and I would love to free up a roster slot for a pitcher. I wonder if I could get anything for him, or if anyone would be willing to take him from him. His first game scared me, he got roughed up, yes only 2 earned, but guess who made the error? Yep Zak Fisher.

I was looking around and thing about who I should offer extensions, or if I had anyone that I needed to and Juan Guzman was one player who jumped out. Guzman is a decent player, but he is a player I have watched grow up in the Cannons system. He won't win any awards, but he can play multiple positions and is an average hitter. A nice player to have on the bench. I tried to offer him a 3-year/3.9M extension, and guess what? Yeah the owner said no-way! You don't have any money for free-agents. Looking into this I see I have a projected $23 M deficit estimated for 2041. WHAT?? How? How do I miss this? Guess what time it is?

I gave Naganori Matsuo a lot of money to come to Chadds Ford and so far he has proven he deserved it (.289-22-51). The problem is he is due $16.4 M next year, and he is making 25% of the payroll as it is now. I'd hate to deal him away, but it looks like it might be one of those things that just has to get done.

In 2041 Matsuo is set to make $16.4, Juan Cuesta $7.0 (A), Ogai Takahashi $6.6, Gehrig Pearl $6.0 (A), Gregorio Costello $5.9, and Felipe Suarez $3.8. Doesn't seem like much, but it is adding up fast. I hate having to deal with this, but it is one of those necessary evils.

Now we just need to start getting some W's at home and we may actually be able to turn this season around. I like the sound of that, we aren't out of it yet, we could surprise some people over the next half of the season. I am going to go into this break with a positive attitude. I may make a change over the next 3-days, but that is yet to be seen... right now we need the break to regroup.

"To be honest, I don't even remember my first home run," he said. "But this one I don't think I'll forget. Who knows if I'll hit another hundred, or fifty, or even ten?"

2040: All-Start Rosters

DBL News: The All-Star Game Rosters Have Been Announced:
It's All-Star Game time -- time for the superstars to shine! Every year DELMARVA Baseball League takes a break in the schedule to play the annual All-Star Game. It's a battle of the superstars -- the Delaware Conference All-Stars versus the MarVa Conference All-Stars. The All-Star Game will spotlight the best hitters, the best pitchers and the best fielders, all doing battle against one another, all trying to prove their league is best.

This years game is going to be fun as we see strong starters and powerful bats on both teams. The DE Conf is littered with first time All-Stars such as Judite Andrade, Ben Alexander, Clifford Nelson, and Darryl Jennings (to name a few),but the most impressive All-Star is 37-year-old Ricardo Gonzalez who is suiting up for his 14th game! In the MV Conf the Washington Senators are sending 5-players, while the Mountaineers and Blue Crabs are sending 4 each! The MarVa Conf is built to last with only 2 players Anthony Sinclair (Senators, 32), Dave Foley (Senators, 33), Jonathan Loeffer (Senators, 31) and Ryan Hunt (Royals, 31) over the age of 30!

2039: MarVa 5, Delaawre 2 (MVP: Takamuku Shibata, Norfolk Cavaliers) / DE: 19-8

In 2039 we didn't have any all-stars, in 2038 we had 3, we didn't get 3 this season, but we did manage 1! And that 1 I have to say is quite a surprise to me, Ben Alexander, our new SP.

I do think Murray Wallstreet (.303/.393/.566, 18 HR, 44 RBI, 45 R), rookie Naganori Matsuo (.289/.386/.577, 22 HR, 51 RBI, 47 R), and rookie Felipe Suarez (.374/.445/.526, 5 HR, 22 RBI, 446 R's leads league in AVG) all would have had a shot if we were in the playoff running. This -9.5 games hurt.

2040 All-Star Game Results

DBL All Star Game a Hit with Fans:
Today Nielsen announced the ratings for DBL's annual All Star game and the long and short of it was - it was a hit. "This year we saw enormous growth in the number of homes viewing the game, said DELMARVA Baseball League's Commissioner Garrett Everson. He continue, "And to tell you the truth, we're not surprised as there really is no better sport in the world. The number of players we have in the league right now that are exceptional, not only for this period of baseball history but for the entire length of the sport's history is beyond compare."

Young Star Helps Propel MarVa Conference to Win in Midseason Classic:
John Minor cemented his status as one of the best in the game with his performance tonight. "It's an honor to even be invited to the game. To be rewarded as the MVP of the game is extra special," the MarVa Conference star said after his great showing. "Just playing on the same diamond as some of these guys is a pure treat." In the game itself, John Minor certainly wasn't the only great player out there, but he did enough in the MarVa Conference's 10-4 win over the Delaware Conference All-Stars. In his 607-game career Minor is batting .279 with 608 hits, 103 home runs, 409 runs scored and 352 RBIs.

The Delaware Squad took an early lead plating 3 in the top of the second thanks to a HR by Jesus Vazquez, and some walks and singles. That lead didn't last long thanks to a 3-run shot by Tyrone Jackson and a 2-run HR by John Minor in the 3rd. After 3 the MarVa Conference was holding a 7-3 lead. After that it was smooth sailing by the MarVa Conference as they locked down the DE's bats.

MVP: John Minor, Washington Senators: 2-4, HR, 3 RBI, R

Chadds Ford: Ben Alexander: 0.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB

June 2040 - In Review

Players of the Month - June 2040

Delaware Conference
Vázquez June's Best Bat Choice: Lewes's Jesús Vázquez had a productive June and topped it off by winning the Batter of the Month citation from the Delaware Conference. The 28-year-old third baseman stood out at the plate with a .416 batting average, 7 home runs, 24 RBIs and 19 runs scored. Thus far this year Vázquez has hit .340 with 23 home runs and 64 RBIs.

Abadee Collects DE Conf Pitching Award: Travis Abadee has been around the league long enough to know that relievers are often overlooked. That has never stopped him from doing what he does best -- and he did it extremely well in June and stole away with the Delaware Conference Pitcher of the Month award. The Clippers bullpen ace collected 9 saves and 15 strikeouts in 16 innings, holding the opposition to a .246 average and posting a 2.81 ERA and a 3-0 record. His season stats show Abadee has 16 saves in 39 relief appearances with a 7-2 mark and 2.97 ERA.

Fujihara Voted June's #1 Newcomer: Eisaku Fujihara is a latecomer to this league. The 32-year-old Lewes first baseman is putting up quality numbers, even though he's not your traditional rookie. On the heels of posting a .287 average, the Delaware Conference named him June's Rookie of the Month. He hit 10 home runs last month, knocking in 20 runs and scoring 17 runs. He banged out 27 hits and drew 15 walks to post a .402 OBP. In his 2040 season totals, Fujihara has 29 home runs, .336 BA, .448 OBP, 66 RBIs and 59 runs scored.

MarVa Conference
MV Conf's Premier Batter Picked: Martinsburg Mountaineers fans believe they've got a talented young star in Ulbrecht Gette. He did nothing to dissuade that notion in June, as he hit .372 with 14 home runs, 33 RBIs and 27 runs scored. The end result was the right fielder being named the MarVa Conference Batter of the Month. For the season Gette is currently batting .318 with 33 home runs and 78 RBIs. In 79 games he has reached base at a .432 rate and scored 68 runs to date.

King George Starter Named MV Conf's Top Pitcher: David Gutiérrez took a much-deserved turn in the spotlight earlier today as he accepted the MarVa Conference Pitcher of the Month award for June. The 24-year-old Royals starter is a relative newcomer to the league, but nonetheless racked up an impressive 5-0 won-lost record in 6 starts. This month he fanned 47 batters in 41 innings and compiled a 1.76 ERA. This year Gutiérrez has a 9-5 record and a 2.91 ERA.

MarVa Conference Names Rookie of Month: Víctor Santiago is still a bit shy, but then, who could blame the newest MarVa Conference Rookie of the Month honoree? He hasn't been around the league long enough to fully know the ropes yet, despite the fact that he's putting up veteran-like numbers. In June the Chesapeake hitter tagged opposing pitching for a .320 average with 31 hits, 2 home runs and 7 RBIs. This year Santiago has 2 home runs and a .307 batting average.

GM Notes:
I have started shopping players around. I am just about done with this team and ready to blow things up. I have 2 deals I am waiting to hear back from so we will see. But deals my Assistant GM wasn't very happy about it. I need to free salary I am running so low on money for next season and we aren't winning so something has to be done... time to blow things up and hopefully get younger and, ideally, better.

I just can't believe how bad we have been this year... really our pitching. I need Cuesta to come back, but he still isn't the answer to all my problems. I am at a loss really. What do you do when your team can't pitch? Gehrig Pearl, Tom Watson, and Ben Alexander have done their jobs as starts, but I just don't have a #4 or 5 that can pick up the slack. My top pitching prospect is on the DL for the year (Crisp Klin) and he probably would be seeing time this year with the club if he was healthy.

I have this year and next left on my contract, but I am ready to walk away from this team. I haven't been able to do much with this team, I have tired different approaches, but nothing seems to want to work. Where I am know I am wondering if I try this year and next year or just walk away now. I am just about done, burned out on this team.

Mike Johnson, Juan Guzman and Theo Bomas are all free-agents to be. I can't resign Guzman, as I don't have any money, I am not going ot resign Johnson and there really isn't a trade market for him, and Bomas I'd love to deal but he isn't going to bring in much quality without throwing in a prospect or draft pick, which I don't want to do.

Nagnori Matsuo is my best offensive player right now and he is also my most expensive getting $15.4 million this year, then 16.4 next and 17.4 after that. I regret this deal, I thought it would be a good deal and help us make the playoffs, but wow was I wrong. Worst part is he is 33-years-old and no one wants to make a deal without sending big money back dead contracts back to me. Quality for Money isn't something I am interested in.

Trade deadline is July 31st so expect some changes coming...

Thank you for sharing this dynasty over the years, been following from the beginning. You have had it rough in Chadds Ford. The extreme budget constraints combined with some bad luck, have made it difficult. I wouldn't blame you for moving on, it gets to the point it is not fun.

Anyway you could post a screenshot of the league history page?

Here you got the league history page... let me know if you want to see anything else.

It has been a rough road for me here. Every time I feel like I am making progress something happens, either salaries, injuries, bad player development... and I just haven't been able to keep any team together for long enough to gel.

Thanks for reading along.

Other/Roster News:
I have waived veteran leaders Mike Johnson and Gregorio Costello.

GM Notes:
I had a rough week and the worst part is I am not sure what to do with this team. I did get rid of 2 big contracts which makes me happy, however I will miss Matsuo in the middle of the lineup. Now I just need to get some production from somewhere else, is that even possible?? Then again the real problem with this team is the pitching and it is tough to deal with this staff. I thought I had some depth and some talent... guess not.

We had two extra inning games this week, which I thought was weird. I really don't remember having any so far this year (its been a long year in real time). So I looked back at my record and we are 2-3 in extra innings games. That seems like such a low number for the first 89 games... I am not sure if that is a good thing or no, I am guessing with a 41 and 48 record it is a bad thing. Just odd in my opinion.

I should look to see who is on this team and where they came from, such a different crew of players than I remember. Players like Slavador Ferrer, Augusto Ramos, Zak Fisher, Joe Lawrence and Cecilio Ojeda.. I mean I know where some of them came from, but it is weird seeing these strange names appear in the box scores. Ferrer is the only home grown player, which we signed as a minor-league free-agent in 2035 and, honestly, he probably shouldn't be in the bigs. He has been known to be a great infielder which is why he has gotten this far. I just hope he can hit for us.

I am expecting big things from Cecilio Ojeda and Joe Lawrence. Ojeda however isn't happy about being traded to a top team to a bottom feeder. So we will see what we can do to make him happy. Hopefully making him a full-time SP will help. He isn't really a full-time starter right now, he needs to develop that third pitch (Curveball: 5/12). Joe Lawrence is a beast in the making and hopefully I can figure out a way to keep him around for a while in Chadds Ford. He could be the ace, actually ratings wise he is our ace.

With the deals I have made I haven't thrown the towel in yet, but it is close. I think we can possible salvage a decent year but that might just be wishful thinking... worst part is even after dealing those contracts I have no money for extensions. I don't know what to do, because I don't want to lose Juan Guzman. Maybe I leave Chadds Ford and sign Guzman wherever I end up. You can always use a back-up IF'er right?

Game 96: Lewes 6, Chadds Ford 7
Tom Watson: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 BB, 4 K
Bob Bradford (3-3): 2.2 IP, 3 H, R, 3 K
Felipe Suarez: 2-3, 2B, R, RBI
Mike Johnson: 2-4, 2B, R
Eugene Todd: 1-2, 2 RBI
H: 10, LOB: 11

Transactions:
Placed SP Gregorio Costello on waivers.
Placed LF Mike Johnson on waivers.
Placed CF António Garza on the 11-day disabled list.
Purchased the contract of RF Pedro Díaz from Triple A San Juan.
Placed 1B Israel Cruz on irrevocable waivers.
Sent LF Ramón González to Triple A San Juan for injury rehab.

Injuries:
2B Juan Guzman, Severe hip strain, 4 months, 11-day DL
OF Juan Rosales, Broken bone in elbow, 2 months, 11-day DL
3B Tully Maxwell, Fractured thumb, 1-2 weeks, 11-day DL
MR Ben Alexander, Abdominal soreness, 1-days till activation, 11-day DL
SP Juan Cuesta, Torn rotator cuff, 2 weeks, 11-day DL
1B Hector Solis, Broken kneecap, 6-months, 11-day DL
OF Antonio Garza, Strained shoulder, 5-weeks, 11-day DL
CL Alvin Richardson, Elbow inflammation, 4 weeks, 11-day DL

Garza went down this week. He wasn't hitting the ball well at all (.176-1-5) in his 11-games, but he brought a great glove to the OF. Pedro Diaz who seems to be a "AAAA" player is back up. He was hitting .357-7-26 in AAA, and during his time with the big club only .210-1-11. I am hoping he gets warm, I need the bat.

OF Ramon Gonzalez was sent to AAA for a rehab assignment.

Other/Roster News:

GM Notes:
We had a winning week, which is nice, seems like it has been forever. I am guessing this is just the excitment of the big deals last week and it won't last long. If I am lucky we will be hot for a few weeks or maybe a few months... and at least finish with a .500 record. Playoffs won't be happening this season, but a .500 record? Yeah that is possible.

All my vets are on waivers, red-hot Mike Johnson, inconsistent captain Gregorio Costello, and new comer Isreal Cruz. These guys are just taking up a roster slot right now... Anyone else getting excited for September and expanded rosters? I have a lot of guys ready to prove themselves, and guess what it might really help make off-season decisions.

My goal is to stay here in Chadds Ford one more season. I would hate to walk away, and I doubt I will be lucky enough to get fired, but one more season and if we make the playoffs maybe one more. If not then I am going to walk away from the Cannons, and maybe the DBL... Yes that is right, maybe even the DBL... We will see however it has been a fun ride and I really would like to go out on a high note (maybe I should have retired in 2027, lol).

I am getting excited for the return of Juan Cuesta (2-weeks) and Alvin Richardson (3-4 weeks) to give a boost to our staff. Cuesta I am very curious about he was supposed to be our ace and I am worried about how he will return after his torn rotator cuff. He won 16 and 15 games in 38 and 39, and we realy could use that kind of consistency this season. If he can return it will be a nice boost to our staff. As for Richardson he is a true closer and at the top of his game. 22 saves this season before going down and we haven't had a good closer since. If we have any chance at making a run at .500 or that final wild card we need him back.

** Expected back within the next 2 weeks, Alvin Richardson suffered a set-back and will now miss 5 more weeks.

Other/Roster News:
SP Ben Alexander came off the DL and was sent to AAA. I just don't have any roster space for him. Hopefully I can figure something out soon.

GM Notes:
We aren't having a great July playing just under .500 ball, but it really feels like we are doing better than that. I will say this feels like the best month of the season. Maybe it was the trades I made, sent these guys a messagea. Who knows maybe I am just dreaming wanting to be better.

I like this team, the players, but I think I focused too much on that when building this team. You can't build a winning team by keeping players you like. Liking them made me believe they were going to be much better than they acutally were. I understand that now, but my mistakes have really hurt us and maybe just be the end of my career here.

One example will be SP Gehrig Pearl. I had faith that he would turn into a 20-game winner, a SP that would turn out to be my ace and take us deep into the playoffs... Instead he has struggled to get wins. Last year he went 6-11 5.24 with a 1.40 WHIP, and this year he is 7-8 4.25 with a 1.36 WHIP. He is more like a 4 or 5, but this year, he has been my ace and it has showed. Guess I should have paid a little more attention the "Flyball pitcher" who has average movement (11/11)...

I have to figure out how to get rid of most of this roster for 2041 and concentrate on building around Otto Carillo, Murray Wallstreet and Jose Ayala. Everyone else is up to go... I just don't know if there is any market out there for any of these guys. Its obviousl I can't win with what I have right now.

This season has dragged on, partly because of the break I took, but partly because I had such great expectations coming in... Hurry up and get over with.

The DelMarVa Basball League - Finishing it Off

It has been 15 months since I wrote on this dynasty and it always bothered me that it pretty much went unfinished. My time with the Chadds Ford Cannons has been tough and I just lost my motivation... Then work got busy and blah blah blah and now we are all living through a worldwide pandemic. I hope everyone is safe and healthy.

That all being said I am finally getting back to this. I am going to finish this season in 2018 OOTP, then upgrade to 2019. I plan to playout 1 or 2 more seasons and then bring this dynasty to an end.

My idea is to quickly sim out the rest of 2040 and then take a few minutes to decide if I want to leave Chadds Ford after 11 'failed' seasons. We snuck into the playoffs 3 times but weren't able to reach the finals.

Coming up will be the 2040 wrap-up and then the off-season. Let the fun begin!

I hope there is some interest, either way, I will finally get the "I did it, it is over" feeling.

July to End of Regular Season 2040

I simmed out the rest of the season, so I could start fresh for the final year(s). Here is the wrap for July-September for the Cannons.

July
Record: 14-15 .483
Overall: 53-57 .482 (8 GB)
Team Hitter of the Month: Ogai Takahashi: .370-10-22, 21 R's, 37 H's
Team Pitcher of the Month: Tom Watson: 6 G, 4-0 3.07, 30 K's

Traded one of my favorites SP Juan Cuesta to the Ellicott City Express for SP/MR Carlos Delgado. I am not sure how this will end up, but Cuesta was going to just cost too much. Cuesta was 40-18 3.86 and Delgado who I plan on being a starter in 2041 has a 2-5 record with a 4.25 ERA and 19 saves. He has struck out 49 hitters in 42 innings which I like to see.

Traded away 35-year-old Zak Fisher who threw well during his limited time here (3 games 0-1, 1.88) to the Harrington Ponies for minor league pitcher Dave Boyd. This was a 2041 salary play.

CL Alvin Richardson may not be back by the end of a season. With 3 weeks left till his return he suffered a set-back and is expected to miss up to 7 more weeks.

Monthly Awards/Notes:
DE Conference
Hitter: Petar Mrdja (Milford Clippers): .322-8-27, 24 R's
Pitcher: Ivan Rosario (Christiana Blue Hens): 45.1 IP, 29 K's, 1.59 ERA, .182 OAVG
Rookie: Ryuzaburo Kondo (Milton Brewers): .330, 37 H's, 6 HR's, 19 RBIs, 17 R's, 17 BB's

MarVa Conference
Hitter: Chris Mildmay (Ellicott City Express): .371-6-22, 27 R's
Pitcher: John Robertson (Martinsburg Mountaineers): 6 GS, 5-0 1.91 ERA, 47 IP, 33 K's
Rookie: Joe Brennan (Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs): .340-11-29, 36 Hits

GM Notes:
Wasn't much to talk about in July as I only simmed one week. It was overall a rough month and I think it was a sign of things to come (read: Downfall!).

August
Record: 12-16 .429
Overall: 65-73 .471 (-11 GB)
Team Hitter of the Month: Isreal Cruz: .397-6-16, 23-58, 2B, 2 3B, 13 RBI's
Team Pitcher of the Month: Gallin Krall: 18 G, 29.1 IP, 2-4 4.30, 3 SV, 1 HLD, 21 K

On the first of August we made some moves sending SS Otto Carillo (.308-6-36) and SS Murray Wallstreet (.288-22-62) to the 11-day DL. What a start for the month... To replace them we brought up OF Ramon Gonzalez who was in AAA on a rehab assignment and 3b German Scrovegni who was hitting .321-1-27 in AAA and will be making is debut today.

We can to an agreement with Juan Guzman, which I believe is team favorable, a 3-year, $3.9 Mil deal. Year 3 is a player option, so he is healthy next year he will be used. He is out for the rest of the season and he hit .270-2-11 in 39 games before going down to injury.

As soon as Murray Wallstreet was ready to return, we lost Eugene Todd to the DL. Todd has struggled all season and I have to say I am missing his .271-18-50 averages from the past 2 seasons. This .211-6-32 with 51 K's in 223 AB's is for the dogs. I am glad to Murray back.

The same day our Ace Ben Alexander threw a 3-hit shutout, our newly departed Juan Cuesta threw a 6-hit shutout of his own. Something about pitchers when they leave Chadds Ford. I will have to keep an eye on how he does the rest of the way.

Two days back from the DL and down went Murray Wallstreet, again. This time with a concussion, as with before, he will have another player Ramon Gonzalez joining him... the injuries continue to stack up.

Otto Carillo returned from the DL and said "tag you're it" to Gehrig Pearl as he was sent to the DL... the downfall for Pearl is this is a big one. He will miss the next 13 months with a torn flexor tendon. Our #2 pitcher (7-10 4.48) is out and that hurts. He wasn't great, but he was solid... Gregorio Costello, who I have been waiving and DFA'ing for months will take his roster slot.

We now have 10 players on the DL, happy mid-summers day!!

Ogai Takahashi was suspedned for 7-games for fighting. Takahashi is leading the team with 33 HR's and 82 RBI's. This is going to hurt his 100 RBI chances!

Tully Maxwell headed to the DL, but Murray Wallstreet and Ramon Gonzalez returned to the team. Pedro Medellin was sent back to AAA after going 1-10 in 4 games. Maxwell will be out 3-weeks with forearm inflammation.

Monthly Awards/Notes:
Washington Senators CL Dave Foley saved game #300 of his career. He has pitched in 671 games posting a 72-63 mark with a 3.82 ERA.

DE Conference
Hitter: Patrick Coates (Milford Clippers): .465-8-32, 20 R's.
Pitcher: Clint Guyer (New Castle Colonials): 6 GS, 5-0 2.18, 34 K's, 45.1 IP
Rookie: Darryl Jennings (Milton Brewers): .291-11-21, 30 H's

MarVa Conference
Hitter: Ulbrecht Gette (Martinsburg Mountaineers): .356-10-22, 32 R's
Pitcher: Cesar Berau (Chesapeake Blue Crabs): 6 GS, 5-1 2.12, 38 K's, 46.2 IP
Rookie: Joe Brennan (Virginia Beach Surf Dawgs): .381-7-25, 15 R's

GM Notes:
The deeper into the season the more I am getting tired of the Cannons. I am torn if I should a) fire and trade everyone and start over, b) try to build with what I have, or c) resign from the Cannons after 11 unsuccessful seasons, well we did make the playoffs 3-times, so they weren't always unsuccessfuly... however, I did see that the Ports haven't reached the playoffs in their 23 seasons, which seems like a good challenge... something to think about over the past month.

September
Record: 14-10 .583 (best WPct of the season)
Overall: 79-83 .488 (-11 G)
Team Hitter of the Month: Ogai Takahashi: .273-7-18 (18-66), 3 2B, 1 3B, 12 R, 15 BB, 1.081 OPS
Team Hitter of the Month: Murray Wallstreet: .291-5-15 (23-96), 5 2B, 15 R, .934 OPS
Other Hitting Highlights: Ramon Gonzalez: 22, H's, 6 SB's, 14 R's, Jose Matos .310
Team Pitcher of the Month: Jose Santos: 4 G, 3 GS, 2-0, 20 IP, 13 H, 10 BB, 23 K, 0.45 ERA
Other Pitching Highlights: 4 pitchers tied with 2 W's, 2 pitches had 2 SV's

Septemberf started with me calling up 7-players. I don't have much more than those 7 to call up. Six playeres we have seen before (Antonio Garza, Pedro Medellin, Don Stewart, Jose Santos, Juan Monjardim, Anthony Howard), and one MR Ryan Sanders will be making his debut. Anthony Howard returns to Chadds Ford, he was last seen in 2035 hitting .264-14-73 as our 1B/DH. A player I am torn about brining up is 24-year-old catcher Miguel Cortesini. He may be the catcher of the future, which is partly why I think I should wait till he is ready.

Eugene Todd came back during the first week of September. He has had an awful year, so I am not expecting much from him in return over the next few weeks.

OF Antonio Garza is the latest Cannon to sign-up for the DL. Garza has a sore elbow and will be sent ot the 11-day DL and he will be joined by 3B German Scrovegni who is also on his way to the 11-day. German was hitting .329-1-9 in 24 games as a Cannon his debut season. He will be out 5-weeks with a fractured finger.

We can't seem to make it a week without losing a player. This time we lost hot hitting rookie 3B German Scrovegni (.329-1-9) just 85 AB's into his career. He is out of the season (5-weeks), assuming we don't make the playoffs. Joining Scovegni we placed old vet Mike Johnson on the DL as well. He is listed D2D for over a week and with the injuries we are going through I couldn't handle losing another player... September 10th, the low spot of the year, our 40-man roster, yes all of them, are either on the DL or on the big-league roster. 32 active players, 3 players playing with nagging D2D injuries, and 9 a total of 8 others on the DL.

I wasn't ready to do this, but I called up one of our top prospects, who has slid down the rankings over the past years, Miguel Cortesini. Miguel will get some game time in behind the plate, he was hitting .284-22-89 in AAA with 100 BB's and 116 K's. He is a big swinger and is dangerous when he makes contact.

The 2nd week in September, me and most of the team and begging for the season to finally finish, and I start getting the emails... Juan Rosales suffers a set-back, Tully Maxwell suffers a set-back, and, finally, the saddest email of them all "Cannons out of Time"... another failed season.. and to top it off, the end of the week ends with us losing yet another player Francisco Franco, our substitute closer. At least we got our 'real' closer back this week in Alvin Richardson.

Our future catcher Miguel Cortesini has looked pretty solid in his first 6-games with us. He is playing 1B due to the injuries and hasn't done too bad. His range isn't great, but he has yet to be charrged with an error... with the stick? Well his debut was 0-3 (no K's so that is good) but he finished hitting .261-1-4 with 2 doubles. Not bad for 6-23, only 1 walk, and 5 K's.

Another day another email letting me know a players (Antonio Garza) recovery is unclear! Holy cow this is getting out of hand... time to look for a better trainer. Amazing string of bad luck.

Players finally start popping off the DL as season gets closer and closer to the end... but now they won't be in the line-up I just don't have the space for them.

The season is over and this team fought to end on a high note, winning our last 6 and 9 out of 10. Where was this team earlier in the year? But we will take it, builds some character and gets us ready for 2041.

Now I can take a breath and start thinking about 2041, not sure what to do here...

** I am curious if I will get fired. Should be interesting.

Upcoming:
Regular Season Wrap-Up / Season Leaders / Missed HIghlights
The Playoffs!
