Series Preview
Detroit Tigers- Won the American League with an 87-67 record on the seasons final day, getting an Andrew McCutcheon 3 run homer for all their runs, and Bob Rhoads (19-14 4.67) and Rick Lysander (3-2 8 Saves 5.08 since his trade from the St Louis Browns) shut down rival Cleveland to win the AL by a single game. They were 3rd in runs scored, 3rd in OBA, 4th in HR's and 3rd in SB's. Their pitching was 4th in Runs Against, Starter and Bullpen ERA and 3rd in Defense. Offensively they are led by their 3-4-5 trio of Andrew McCutcheon (.266-22-74) their 24 year old CF, Walt Bond (.299-18-88) their 22 year old LF and 27 year old 2B Craig Biggio (.293-18-96). Gil Hatfield, their 37 year old 3B led the club with a .311 average in 122 games. 36 year old RF Gavvy Cravath hit .273/394/480 with 17 HR's and 68 RBI's as well. Mel Roach is a big weapon off the bench hitting .364 as a reserve, Pinch hitter.

On the mound they go all right handed. Starting with Ace J.R. Richard (14-6 3.32 217 IP 174 hits, 165 K's and 114 BB) then 24 year old Bob Rhoads (19-14 4.67 in 38 starts over 272 IP). Their #3 is Erskine Mayer (11-14 4.12) followed by Dana Kiecker (12-12 4.03). Roger Nelsonn (13-14 5.03 in 41 games, 33 starts, is their swingman. Lysander closes with Tom Ferrick (3-7 4.53) and Josh Hancock (4-1 3.72 since his trade from Clevelnand). Bob Patterson (1-1 4.62) is the staffs only lefty.

Cincinnati-Won the National League by 7 games with the best offense and bullpen in the league. Led by their 3-4 combo of Jimmy Walsh (.335-36-107) and John E Briggs (.309-30-101) they were 2nd in runs, 1st in Avg 4th in OBP and 5th in HR's. Their top 6 hitters all hit .306 or better.

On the mound they have an awesome trio atop their rotation. John H Patterson (24-11 3.69) is followed by Mike Mussina (17-11 4.04) and Fausto Carmona (18-12 3.48). Chris Peters (3-3 3.95) is their 4th guy if they use him and Fleury Sullivan (10-10 6.04) provides long relief. Steve Crawford closes (17 Saves 2.52) and Martin Glendon (1-0 1.02 in 13 games since coming from the Cardinals) and Ray Lamb (9-6 4.40) setup. They have no lefties in the pen.

GAME 1
Reds get a 2 out RBI single in the first from Rube Olding to grab an early 1-0 lead. A leadoff triple from Ernie R Johnson, followed by a Fausto Carmona RBI double and 3 hitters later a Jimmy Walsh sac fly puts Cincy up 3-0 after 2, and that's where the score would stay as Fausto Carmona would toss a 3 hit shutout in game 1 of the World Series going 9-3-0-0-5-2 to give Cincy a 1-0 series lead.

The game would go to the top of 3 before any scoring. Phil Cavaretta kicked things off for Detroit with an 0-2 HR after a leadoff double by Tony Womack to put the Tigers up 2-0.
The game would remain that way until Andrew McCutcheon upped the lead to 3-0 with a 5th inning leadoff HR.
The Reds would answer in the bottom half on Jimmy Walsh's 2 out RBI single scoring Patterson, making it 3-1 Detroit after 5.
Into the 7th, Womack would lead off again with a single and after an error, score on a Walt Bond ground out, making it 4-1 Detroit. Biggio would single in the next AB, driving in Cavaretta to make it 5-1 Tigers after 6 1/2.
Reds PH Randy Moore hit a 1 out 7th inning double and after a passed ball would come home on Lee Magee's RBI ground out to make it 5-2 Tigers.
Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the 8th Tom Ferrick would relieve Richard after a leadoff walk to John E Briggs and Oldring would greet him with a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd, and bring righty Roger Nelson into the game, 5-2 runners at 2nd and 3rd. Mike Jorgenson would then drill a 1-0 pitch into the corner for a 2 run double to cut the lead to a run, 5-4. After a failed attempt to get the lead runner at third on a sac, Ron Oester would work a 3-2 count and then drill a deep fly ball to right center, scoring Jorgenson and tying it at 5.
Into the 9th and Fleury Sullivan, Reds closer, would come on and immediately cause problems for himself. Walking Cavaretta to lead off the inning, he'd get McCutcheon on a 1 pitch F7 and after running a 3-0 count get Bond on an F9, that was deep enough for Cavarett to get to 2nd. Biggio then battled deep to a 2-2 count and drilled a tie break single to left, scoring Cavaretta for a 6-5 Tiger lead.
Roy Cullenbine would then walk on 4 pitches, and a Sullivan error on pinch hitter Gavvy Cravaths comebacker would load the bases with 2 outs. Billy Sullivan Jr would break it open with a 2 run single, scoring Biggio and Cullenbine to make it 8-5 Detroit.
Rick Lysander would enter in the 9th and Ival Goodman singled to start the inning. Jimmy Walsh flew out but John E Briggs singled and Goodman would take 3rd to put runners on the corners, 8-5 1 out. Rube Oldring would bring Goodman in on an RBI grounder and Lysander would K Mike Jorgenseon, the tying run, on a 2-2 pitch for an 8-6 Tiger win to even the series at 1.

GAME 3
Cincy would jump on Tiger starter Bob Rhoads for a run in the first after Lee Magee's leadoff double. John E Briggs 2 out RBI double making it 1-0.
Detroit would get to Mussina in the bottom of the 2nd. Back to back 1 out singles by Biggio and Cullenbine would setup 3 straight 2 outs hits. Billy Sullivan Jr would drill an RBI single, scoring Biggio followed by Rhoads helping himself with a 2 out single that scored Cullenbine. Tony Womack would close out the 2nd inning scoring with a 1st pitch gapper bring Sullivan home and Rhoads would be thrown out trying to score to end the inning, but after 2 Detroit led 3-1.
To the top of 4, still 2-1, after a Oldring leadoff single and a misplay by Tiger RF Phil Cavaretta, Sammy White hit into a DP putting Oldring at 3rd with 2 outs. Ernie R Johnson would line a 1st pitch single down the RF line to make it 3-2 Detroit heading to the bottom of 4.
The Reds would strike again in the 5th. John E Briggs 2 out 1st pitch single would plate Ivan Goodman (who singled and stole 2nd) to tie it at 3.
And the 6th would bring another opportunity for Cincy. With Jorgenson at 2nd after a leadoff single and Sammy White sac, Ernie R Johnson would again deliver, lining a 1 out single to left, scoring Johnson and putting Cincy on top 4-3.
Mussina was settled and working through the Tigers in easy fashion, allowing the Reds to pounce again in the 7th. Back to back 1 out walks to Walsh and Briggs were made good when Jorgenson drilled a 2 out RBI single to score Walsh, and Sammy White followed with a full count single in the hole between short and third to make it 6-3 Cincy heading to the bottom of 7.
Detroit would answer in the bottom half on pinch hitter Pete Reiser's 2 out triple. He would score 1 pitch later on a passed ball to make it 6-4 Reds after 7.
Tom Ferrick would take over for Rhoads to start the 8th and after a Mussina ground out, Cincy would open it up. 4 straight singles, Magee, Goodman, Walsh, driving in Magee, and Briggs, driving in Goodman, would make it an 8-4 game after 7.
Mussina would set Detroit down over the final two, yielding just a lone Gil Hatfield 2 out single in the 9th before retiring Billy Sullivan Jr on a 4-3 for the complete game 8-4 win.

Magee would finish the day 4-6 with a run, Briggs 3-4 3 RBI's and Jorgenson 3-5 with an RBI. Cincy pounded out 19 hits.

GAME 4
A 0-0 game into the bottom of 3 would stay that way as LF Roy Cullenbine would throw Ernie R Johnson out at home to end the Reds half of the third.
Both pitchers would get out of big jams and get big defense over the next inning, as the game went into the bottom of 4 0-0.
Biggio would reach on Red SS Ernie E Johnsons error. Cullenbine would then walk and with runners on 1st and 2nd Mark Lewis hit into a 6-4-3. Peters walked Ron Brand with Biggio on third and pitcher Erskine Mayer made him pay with a 2 out 2-2 double to right center, plating the games 1st run. Gil Hatfield followed with a 2 out RBI single to make it 2-0 Tigers and Phil Cavaretta would then crush a 2-1 offering to deep center for a 3 run homer to put the Tigers on top 5-0 after 4.
Mayer would have a quick 8 pitch shutdown inning in the 5th to push momentum even farther into the Tiger's corner.
It appeared this one was heading for disaster as Peters would get Cravath to start the 5th, and then issue 3 consecutive walks to load the bases. Tiger ron Brand then, inexplicably, would pop the 1st pitch to third (after a 4 pitch walk to Mark Lewis) and Mayer wouldn't help himself 1 pitch later by popping to shallow left, helping Peters and the Reds avoid certain disaster.
The Reds would seize on that in the bottom half. Goodman would leadoff with a first pitch double, after a Walsh F9 John E Briggs singled, and Rube Oldring followed with an RBI single scoring Goodman to make it 5-1. Mike Jorgenson followed with another RBI single to make it 5-2 and put runners at 1st and 2nd. White would go F7 and Ernie R Johnson would K looking on 3 pitches to end the top of the 6th with Detroit up 5-2.
Peters would falter, and crumble, in the bottom. Drilling Hatfield to start the inning, Phil Cavaretta would hit a 3-2 single that would end Peter's day. Carlos Villanueva would enter and get McCutcheon on a deep fly out and then on an 0-2 pitch, Gavvy Cravath launched a bomb to left center that would carry out of the yard for a 3 run homer to put the Tigers ahead 8-2.
They would start piling on in the 7th. An RBI ground out by Billy Werber made it 9-2, and Cavaretta's 2nd HR of the day, a 2 run shot, would make it 11-2. McCutcheon would follow for back to back HR's and a 12-2 lead. Ron Brands sac fly in the 8th would net the final 13-2 score and tie the series at 2 games apiece. Cavaretta would end up 3-4 with 2 HR's and 5 RBI's.

Tigers jump out, bottom of 1, a Phil Cavaretta triple followed by an Andrew McCuthceon RBI single puts Detroit ahead 1-0 after 1.
Both pitchers go strong into the 4th when back to back 1 out walks to Cullenbine and Hatfield followed by a Sullivan Jr single, load the bases with 1 out. J.R. Richard runs a full count and Patterson walks the pitcher, and a run in for a 2-0 deficit. Tony Womack follows with a sac fly to make it 3-0 and Cavaretta piles on with a 1st pitch 2 run double for a 5-0 lead. After an error by 3B, , Walt Bond singles in Cavaretta to make it 6-0. Biggio walks to load the bases, and Cullenbine drills a 2 run single to blow it open, 8-0 Detroit after 4 full.
Cavaretta doubles in another in the 5th, scoring Sullivan Jr and Biggio's bases loaded walk plates Womack for a 10-0 lead after 5.
Cincy gets 2 in the 6th but this ones over by then. Detroit wins 10-2 to go up 3-2 in a series headed back to Cincy.
Richard tosses a complete game (9-3-2-2-4-10) and Cavaretta drives in 3.

A 0-0 pitchers duel into the bottom of the 3rd when Ernie R Johnson singles, is bunted over and scores after stealing third when Billy Sullivan Jr's throw sails into left. 1-0 Reds after 3.
Briggs and Oldring hit back to back doubles leading off the 4th, Oldring's driving in Briggs and Oldring would later score on Ernie R Johnsons double play ground out. Cincy up 3-0 after 4 and that would be the game for the most part as Mike Mussina tossed a 6 hitter, punching out 5, to go 2-0 in the series and tie it at 3 games apiece.

1st Inning
A lone Cavaretta double in the top of 1 results in nothing, no runs on a hit 11 pitches for Carmona.
Mayer has to battle a bit, Goodman works a 1 out walk on a long AB, Briggs a 2 out single but Oldring pops out to end it. 24 pitch first, 0-0 after 1.

2nd inning
Cullenbine and Hatfield hit back to back 1 out singles, Sullivan Jr makes it 3 in a row, driving in Cullenbine for a 1-0 lead. With 2 outs and Womack up a Carmona WP scores Hatfield from 3rd. Womack then singles in Sullivan Jr and is caught stealing on the 1st pitch to Cavaretta to end the inning. 3-0 Detroit heading to the bottomg of 2. Carmona is at 38 pitches after 2.
Reds go quietly after a leadoff Jorgenson single and walk to Sammy White, 2 on none out, but an F7, 5-3 and pop up end it. 42 pitches after 2 for Erskine, 3-0 Tigers.

3rd Inning
Carmona drills McCutcheon with 1 out but gets out of the inning on 13 pitches, 51 for him after 3.
Mayer goes 3 up 3 down on 14 pitches (Briggs with a 9 pitch AB), 56 pitches for Erskine, Tigers ahead 3-0 after 3.

4th Inning
A Cullenbine leadoff walk is erased on a Hatfield DP. 13 pitch inning for Carmona. 64 total after 4.
Mayer goes quickly in the 4th, 9 pitches including an inning ending 6-4-3 after Jorgenson had reached on catchers interference. 65 pitches and a 3-0 lead for Erskine.

5th Inning
Mayer leads off with a single and with 2 outs McCutcheon drive the pitcher home on an RBI single, 4-0 Detroit heading to the bottom of 5. Carmona at 80.
Lee Magee drills a 2 out triple and Goodman follows with an RBI single to get Cincy on the board. 4-1 Detroit after 5, Mayer at 75 pitches.

6th Inning
A Craig Biggio leadoff single sets up Roy Cullenbine's 2 run homer, ending Carmona's day. Carlos Villanueva relieves him and sets the Tigers down in order, but it's 6-1 Detroit and Cincy has 4 at bats left.
The Reds just kill themselves. A Briggs lead off single is erased when Mayer picks him off on the 1st pitch of Rube Oldring AB, made worse when Oldring singles 5 pitches later. He's erased on Jorgenson's 4-6-3 inning ending DP. 6-1 Detroit after 6, Mayer at 85 pitches.

7th Inning
Burt Keeley relieves Villanueva with an out and Cavaretta on 1st, McCutcheon flies out on 1 pitch, Bond walks and Biggio goes F7 to end it. 6-1 Detroit.
A 1 out Ernie R Johnson double nets them nothing as PH Randy Moore grounds out and Lee Magee pops to 1st. Detroit is 6 outs away, Mayer at 95 through 7.

8th Inning
A 1-2-3 top half and Cincy gets the crowd going with back to back singles from Goodman and Walsh to start the bottom of the 8th. With runners on the corners and 0 outs, Briggs pops to shallow center, Oldring does the same thing, and Jorgenson pops to second on the first pitch to kill the rally, inning and maybe the season. Mayer at 111 pitches through 8, 6-1 Tigers.

9th Inning
What feels like the nail in the coffin, a 1 out Womack triple is turned into a run on the next at bat as Cavaretta continues his MVP parade with an RBI single, and a 7-1 Tiger lead into the bottom of 9.

Sammy White drills a first pitch double down the right field line.
Ernie R Johnson hits a grounder to first, moving White to third, but giving a precious out away.
Pinch Hitter Ron Oester pops to short for the 2nd out.
Lee Magee then smacks a line drive to right center, bringing in White, and making it 7-2.

10/14 New York Giants deal 28 year old Monte Cross, IF, to the St Louis Browns for 29 year old p Bud Daley. Cross hit .154-1-8 as a utility guy in 56 games and was out a month. Daley went 11-17 with 1 Save and a 5.55 ERA in 36 games, 29 starts, covering 199.1 IP.

10/16 St Louis Cardinals deal 26 year old Michael Tucker (.270-13-61 in 126 games) to the Phillies for 27 year old SP Fritz Coumbe. Coumbe was acquired by Philly, from the Red Sox early in the year. With Boston he was 3-7 5.82 in 14 starts but went 7-9 3.37 in 22 starts after the deal, to compile a 10-16 4.23 season in 36 starts over 219 IP with 263 hits and 89 walks to 66 K's.

10/20 Brooklyn Dodgers deal 20 year old IF Angel Ortiz and 23 year old 1B prospect Bill Carter to Washington Senators for 27 year old RP Bert Maxwell. Maxwell was 3-1 1 Save 3.83 with the A's before being dealt to Washington where he went 2-0 4.40 in 23 games (total 5-1 1 Save 4.11 in 45 games, 1 start, 61.1 IP 63 hits, 28 BB 27 K's). Ortiz is a potential 3 star 2B, Carter is a 1B with limited upside.

10/25 The New York Giants moved SP Randy Tomlin, 27, to the Pittsburgh Pirates for 22 year old minor league OF Stanton Hoover and 19 year old 2B Matt Hurt. Tomlin was 18-11 3.65 in 37 starts for the Giants, while Hoover is a 3.5 star OF prospect, and Hurt is a 2B prospect in short season A ball. Tomlin is expected to move into the Closers role in Pittsburgh after tossing 276 innins with 275 hits, 75 K's and 82 BB.

As expected the World Series managers each took home their respective leagues Managers of the Year awards. Luke Sewell with the Reds, and Red Rolfe with the Tigers.
