In the top of the seventh, a run-scoring single by pinch hitter Ron Oester tied it up. The Reds went on to load the bases with one out. Ruhle struck Concepcion out and then Foster grounded to second to retire the side. In the top of the ninth, Dave Smith took the mound for the Astros. In the bottom of the ninth, Doug Bair took the mound for the Reds. With a runner on third and two out, Reynolds grounded a single just past the shortstop to send the Houston fans home with a win.
