1984 NHL Playoffs

Adams Division



Hartford holds the Nordiques to just 1 goal in their 3 game sweep. Montreal needs 2 overtime wins to get by the Bruins in 4. Wayne Gretzky would score in each game of the Adams division final, while Mark Messier had 7 points in the series. The Whalers offense was too much for Montreal again.

Patrick Division



In the Islanders first taste of real playoff pressure, they failed miserably, to playoff tested Washington. The Caps take out the President’s trophy winner in 4 games. After going down 2-0, the Devils win 3 straight to eliminate the Rangers. The top two Patrick Division teams are out. After taking out the first place team, the Caps make easy work out of the Devils. Washington is the first 4th place team to play for in the conference finals…I think…

Norris Division



The North Stars avoid another playoff disaster, at least for now, escaping the Blackhawks in 5 games. The defending champs have an easy time with the Leafs in round 1. In game three of the division final, the North Stars scored 6 third period goals to win 10-7! The line of Dave Taylor, Joel Otto and Dino Ciccarelli combined for 17 points! That win helped Minnesota take a hard fought, 7 game series against the champs. Is this finally Minnesota’s year?

Smythe Division



The Jets manage to win their first ever playoff game, but that’s all the success they get, losing the next 3 to the Kings. The Flames managed to disappoint again. Since winning the Cup 2 years ago, they haven’t won a playoff round, this year, losing to a Canucks team that went 21 games under .500!! The Canucks had nothing left against the Kings. LA is the much better team, and swept the Canucks easily.

Wales Conference Final


This is a rematch of last years semi final series that saw Washington go to their first cup finals. Wayne Gretzky and company are healthy this year. The Caps are one of the only teams that can come close to matching the Whalers offense, but can they stop Hartford from scoring?

Game one is a blowout in every sense of the word. Randy Bucyk scores 3 minutes in for Hartford. That got things started. Wayne Gretzky scored with 18 seconds left in the first, which finished things. Hartford got 3 more goals in there to lead and eventually win, 5-0. Hartford also took 36 minutes in penalties compared to 4 for the Caps. They dominated on the scoreboard and in the corners! In game two, the Caps respond. Michel Goulet scores 40 seconds in, which propels Washington to a 3-0 first period lead. The 2nd period, belonged to Wayne Gretzky. He scores 3 goals in 2:51, all even strength to single handidly tie the game. Before the period is over, Jamie Macoun gives Hartford the lead. After exchanging goals, the Capitals pulled their goalie. With the extra man in the dying seconds, Chuck Walters finds the tying goal on his stick with 30 seconds remaining, forcing overtime. The two teams play almost a complete extra period, but Bobby Clarke ends it at the 18:59 mark. His first of the post season. 6-5 Hartford wins!

Wayne Gretzky opens the scoring in game 3, and the Whalers end the first period of game three with a 3-1 lead. It’s looking like Washington can’t contain the Whalers top line. Bobby Clarke gets a shorthanded goal in the 2nd, while Gretzky and Messier each add one more in the third. Hartford cruises to a 6-2 win. Game 4 sees the Caps score the first two goals, but the period ends after Hartford fights back to tie it. Mark Messier and Wayne Gretzky both score in the 2nd, while Steve Thomas adds another. The 3 goal Hartford lead was too much for the Caps. Hartford wins 7-4 and sweeps the series.



Campbell Conference Finals


Guy Lafleur gets the opening goal, and it’s followed by a Stew Gavin marker, giving LA a 2-0 first period lead. After LA goes up 3-0, Dino Ciccarelli scores 2, and Lanny McDonald gets one, to tie the game. That comeback was impressive, but the Kings respond with 3 goals in 1:27 during the third period. That barrage ended the game. LA wins game one, 6-3. Minnesota opens the scoring in game two, but Serge Boisvert ties it before the end of the first. The two teams exchanged goals again in the 2nd. It was decided when Kelly Miller scored late in the third, giving LA a 3-2 win.

With LA looking to make take a strangle hold on the series, Guy Lafleur opens the scoring, while Pekka Rautakallio scores twice before the first period ends. That 3 goal lead was enough to give the Kings the game three win. 3-1 Kings. They lead the series 3-0. There is no scoring in game four until the midway point of the third. Darryl Sittler gives Minnesota the lead, but Guy Lafleur ties it forcing overtime! In OT, Darryl Sittler gets his 2nd, late in the frame, keeping the North Stars alive. 2-1 Minnesota.

LA decided to take game five off, but the North Stars didn’t. Lanny McDonald gets a hattrick. Jiri Bubla finishes with 6 points. The North Stars destroy the Kings, 7-1! Do they have enough momentum to complete this comeback? No, no they don’t. No drama in game six. After no scoring in the first, LA gets 4 goals in the 2nd. The 4-1 lead expands quickly in the third. LA scores 3 times in the first 8 minutes. The Kings win 8-2, taking the series in 6!

The Kings appear in their third Stanley Cup finals. They won in 79 and lost in 80. Guy Lafleur is still doing greatness into his 30’s, getting 60 goals and 130 points, but he isn’t the biggest star in this series. Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier are the best duo in the NHL, and still are both babies. This is their first finals, and it might be a coronation for them atop the NHL. In addition to being the best offensive team in the NHL, the Whalers are the best defensive aswell. The Kings are in tough here, but you have to give them credit. They have been here before, and know how to win. They looked great in these playoffs. They have as good a shot as anyone!

Why must you say such hurtful things? Can't be too upset because it appears Yzerman is coming back to Detroit IRL. The Kings look solid but it looks like it's the beginning of the Hartford era in the NHL.

Game one starts with Wayne Gretzky looking dominant again. A minute after Denis Potvin gives the Kings a lead, Gretzky scores, and assists on another goal to give the Whalers their first lead. Ryan Walter and Dirk Graham score for LA in the 2nd, and the Kings have the advantage back. They could not hold it. Hartford scores 5 times in the third. Two from Mark Messier and Steve Thomas each. 7-4 the Whalers take game one. The Kings hit the defense button for game two. They hold the Whalers to just a Mark Messier first period goal, a Jamie Macoun 2nd period goal, and nothing for Wayne Gretzky. Unfortunately, they only can get one shot by Rejean Lemelin! 2-1 Hartford wins game two!

Game three is another defensive battle, but this time, it goes the Kings way. Mike Foligno scored the winning goal early in the third period, and for a 2nd straight game, Wayne Gretzky was held scoreless. Kings win 2-1. Mark Messier grabbed 2 goals and an assist, but left game with an apparent injury. He came back after missing a few shifts, and boy did the Whalers need him. Messier scored with 2 minutes remaining in the third to give the Whalers a 4-3 lead! 11 seconds later, ELEVEN, Ilkka Sinsalo tied it for the Kings. 4-4 means overtime. Wayne Gretzky took the opening faceoff of overtime, and won it straight to Mark Messier on the wing. Messier gained the zone, cut to the middle and took a shot, which rebounded to Geordie Robertson, who scores!! Hartford wins game four, 5-4!

Mark Messier has suffered a sever calf laceration. The news story tells me he won’t miss much time, and it’s expected to heal quickly. It also says he will only miss 3 months. SO MANY CONTRADICTIONS HERE. I have no idea if his season is over, but Messier puts on a great performance in game three, playing with the injury. Messier does not miss 3 months, and is in the lineup for game 5. Ryan Walter did not care. The Kings forward scores 2 straight goals to open the scoring. With the score 2-1 entering the third, the teams start exchanging goals. LA scores, Hartford responds, LA scores again….and so on…7 goals are scored. 4 by the Kings, which adds up to a 6-4 LA win to stay alive. LA grabs a lead in game 6, only to see Harold Snepsts snatch it away after a period. No scoring in the 2nd, before some late game heroics. Gary Sargent gets his first of the playoffs for LA, with just 4 minutes remaining, giving the Kings a 2-1 lead. So close to forcing a game 7, Harold Snepsts gets his 2nd of the game just over 2 minutes later, to tie it, and force overtime. In OT, the game is settled in the opening minute again. Brian Mullen scores his 5th, which happens to be the Stanley Cup winning goal!!! LA holds Gretzky off the scoreboard again, but the supporting cast comes through. Hartford wins 3-2, and have won the Cup!!

1984 Offseason News and Notes

Here are last seasons skating leaders.

Wayne Gretzky adds to his already impressive award total from last year. He takes his 2nd Hart, Art Ross, and Pearson trophies, as well as his first Conn Smythe! Craig MacTavish repeats as best defensive forward, but this year, for the Leafs.





Toronto’s Garry Unger has retired at age 36. He’s part of that group of Leafs that was part of 5 championships in a row. Toronto seems to love to honour these guys, and it’s deserved. Unger played his whole career in Toronto, and finished with 926 points! The Leafs will retire his number 8! Minnesota’s Brad Park has retired. He spent his entire career with the North Stars, putting together one of the greatest careers a defenseman ever had. In his final season, he put up 40 points in 55 games, with a game rating of 65!! He could still play. Park finishes his career with 894 points. Minnesota has retired his #2 jersey. Brad Park’s long time goalie, Rogie Vachon also retired. After 1047 games, 477 wins, and 99 shutouts, no North Star will ever where #1 again. Finally, Pittsburgh’s Don Luce has hung up his skates. The 35 year old spent his whole 16 year career with the Pens. He’s the franchises 3rd leading scorer with 938 points. His number 27 will be honoured.



Minnesota robs the Jets blind!



The Jets potentially had 3 elite defenseman on their roster. That number is down to two. Chris Chelios is on his way to Minnesota for Tiger Williams and Jeff Beukeboom. Tiger Williams is a good player. He’s tough as nails, feared around the league, and has the ability to score. He just turned 30 though, and is coming off his first major injury. Jeff Beukeboom is a 2 star potential dman, who looks a ways away from cracking a lineup. This is not enough to trade Chris Chelios, who, at 22, is about to be the player his potential suggested he would be. He’s never missed a game, and is now putting up a mid 60’s game score. He’s ready to emerge. He will fit Brad Park's role perfectly. This was robbery. The Jets are inept!!


Chelios to the North Stars.

The impact players at the top of this draft make losing look attractive! Mario Lemieux is taken first overall by the Detroit Red Wings, and he’s a star today, without any development. Though pretty raw, Patrick Roy, Joe Nieuwendyk and Luc Robitaille follow, and are the right picks. As a whole, this draft is pretty talented, but raw. They will need a few years in the minors before we see much from these guys.





Stan Mikita and Jean Ratelle have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. This is one of the greatest classes ever to get inducted. Both players became franchise icons, worthy of so much more then the Hall of Fame. Mikita is 2nd all time in league scoring, while Ratelle set scoring records year after year leading the greatest dynasty we have ever seen. Both made their teammates, and played huge roles until they hung up the skates!



The first team to win the Iron Curtain lottery, as I now call it, is the Stanley Cup Champion Hartford Whalers. They will sign 19 year old Petr Klima, from Czechoslovakia. Klima is a raw, slick skating and skilled winger, who needs some time in the minors. He’s got a chance to be something someday though.



The Chicago Blackhawks are the 2nd team to win the lottery, and will sign 18 year old Czech, Michal Pivonka. He’s was selected just a few months ago, 136th overall. Pivonka is very raw, rated as 0.5 stars, but with 3 star potential, he’s obviously got something….


The St. Louis Blues are the only team to make any uniform changes. Here is what they will look like going forward.

Welcome to Detroit Mario Lemieux! What was that trade by the Jets? If they were making a Cup run then that makes a little more sense, but they aren't close. Within 2 years they missed out on Stevie Y and traded away one of the best Dmen of his era.

They took Brent Severyn 21st overall, not a great pick. He's got 1.5 star potential. They passed on Al Iafrate, taken one pick later, who got 2.5 star potential, and a lethal slapshot. They picked Randy Burridge in round 2 which looks like a nice value pick.

1984 Season Preview





Player Spotlight



Rick Vaive has been in the league for 5 years now, all with the Penguins. At age 25, he’s got 153 goals. He had two 45 goal seasons, but this last year, his game changed. He started scoring less and playing a more physical game. He's a 3 star player, currently on the 2nd line of the Pens depth chart. Sergei Makarov took his spot on the first line.





Dan Daoust was a 3rd round pick by the Rangers in 79. He spent 2 full years in the AHL, looking like a real prospect. He played a full season in New York, did very little, and has been in the AHL ever since.





Greg Terrion was a 4th round pick of the Penguins in 1979. He’s now an NHL regular though. He spent 14 games in the minors, and has been up ever since. He’s a role player, not expected to do much scoring, but the Pens like him. He looks like a 4th line fixture.





31 year old Tom Lysiak has been a fixture in the Chicago lineup for years. After being selected 14th in the 73 draft, Lysiak made the team right away, and has been centering the third line ever since. He’s got a shot at 1000 games if he can avoid the injuries which have haunted him his last 5 years.





Doug Wilson is an in his prime, star defenseman with the New York Islanders. Well, one of their star defenseman. After beginning his career in the WHA, he’s grown in the NHL, and just had a real breakout season, coinciding with his teams breakout. With Ray Bourque being the franchise player, having Doug Wilson as 2nd fiddle is huge. He's an all-star!

1984-85 NHL Regular Season

23 year old Wayne Gretzky begins the season by hitting the 600 career points mark. I did say 23 years old!!! Wayne is well on his way to setting records. He currently has played 337 games. Not quite two points a game, but give him time to get there!! He’s getting better!

Detroit and Montreal make a big prospect trade!



Pat LaFontaine heads to Montreal for Gary Suter. LaFontaine was who Detroit picked instead of Steve Yzerman. He has 39 points in his 55 AHL games, but is still a teenager. Gary Suter was selected 3rd overall by Detroit back in 82, and traded last year to Montreal for Mark Hardy. That wasn’t a great trade for the Red Wings. The cost to get him back was much higher then what they sold him for. Bad business. Suter is a good player, who has a chance to be on Detroit’s top dman pairing one day, but I don’t think he’s a star. LaFontaine has that kind of ability.

The Islanders have started the season with a 23 game unbeaten streak. This is another thing that isn’t tracked by the game that should be. I do not know what the record is for most games without a loss to start a season. New York is 21-0-2, with 44 out of a possible 46 points so far. Tim Kerr is on pace to repeat his 60 goals performance of a years ago. Bernie Ferderko and Kenny Linseman are playing great two way hockey, and Ray Bourque is having a career year. Lets see how long this will last!

I’m thinking Bobby Orr’s career is coming to an end. Orr just suffered a season ending labrum tear. He’s 36 years old, and was having the worst year of his career. 15 points in 25 games. A pace he’s never experienced before. Orr hasn’t played a full season since he was 30. I can’t imagine he wants to keep doing this every year!

Mario Lemieux is turning heads during his rookie season in Detroit. Mario has 45 points by new years, in just 28 games. The 19 year old has a game rating of 81 on the season. That’s amazing. He’s already established himself as elite. The Red Wings are currently in a playoff spot. Can Mario and Detroit hold onto it?


Can Lemieux get Detroit into the playoffs?

New York's streak ended at 25, with a 2-1 loss to Edmonton. They went on to win 10 straight games after the loss before falling in overtime to Minnesota. Those two losses are the only ones so far. We are at a point that the Isles will be challenging for the best single season in NHL history. The Kings went 68-8-4 back in 1979!


Things are going well on Long Island!

Guy Lafleur is the 2nd player to score 700 goals in his career! Guy’s 30th goal of the season was the historic marker. He’s now got 37 goals in 51 games, a sign he isn’t slowing down at age 33. It took Lafleur 1019 games to get there! That’s insanely fast! Here is a current look at the top 10 goal scorers in NHL history.



The Stanley cup champion Hartford Whalers are completely healthy, and 8 games under .500 at the trade deadline! They are in a battle for the final playoff spot of the Adams division with the Nordiques! Whats going on?? Defense and penalty killing has been bad. Rejean Lemelin’s save percentage is 30 points lower then a year ago. Goal scoring is middle of the pack. Only Gretzky and Messier have been anything offensively. Can the Whalers get it together?

Final Standings



The Islanders fall short of the LA Kings record season, but still win another Presidents Trophy with 64 victories! Ray Bourque becomes the 2nd defenseman to score more then 100 points in a season!

The Whalers have a great final 20 games, They turned their season completely around, and look the part of a contender again. An Islander/Whalers semi finals could be epic!

Winnipeg, on the strength of Scott Stevens and Al MacInnis win the Smythe division. Both those guys developed into top notch defenders. Al MacInnis became the 3rd dman to hit 100 points! Imagine if they still had Chris Chelios, and Steve Yzerman!

The Leafs fail to make the playoff for the first time since 1960. The Leafs really needed a rebuild and they will finally get a high pick to begin the process.



Mario Lemieux finishes his rookie season with 47 goals and 101 points, in 71 games. He gets the Wings into the playoffs!

Steve Yzerman has 78 points in 78 games during his first season in Philly. Dave Andreychuk scores 68 goals at age 21 for Montreal. Quebec traded him for a more experienced winger, and kept losing. They stupid!!

They got pieces, but they have many more holes. They need some goaltending and defense. Dale Hawerchuk needs some help. Roster is a bit of a mess!

1985 NHL Playoffs


Adams Division



Both Montreal and Hartford win their opening round series in 4 games. This sets up a rematch of last years Adams division final, only reversed. Despite Montreal having home ice advantage, I’m saying the Whalers are the favourites. Hartford proves they are the team to beat in the Adams by having no problem with Montreal. Their first 60 games do not matter anymore. They are clearly capable of turning it on. Hartford advances to the Conference finals!

Patrick Division



The first place Islanders needed a four goal third period in game 4 to eliminate the Devils. That was very close to going the limit. Last years first round loss can now be forgotten in Long Island. The Rangers four game series win over Washington sets up the battle of New York.

The battle of NY turns out to be a defensive smothering of the Rangers. The Islanders allow just 7 goals in their 5 game win. DEFENSE WINS TITLES!! The Islanders advance to their first conference final!

Norris Division



I admit, every time Minnesota trails in a series, I expect them to lose. I have attached that playoff failure label to them, but they beat the Blues 3 straight after losing the opener to advance. Mario Lemieux gets 3 goals and 5 points in his first playoff experience, leading the Wings to the 2nd round. Lemieux is held scoreless in the first 3 games of the 2nd round. The North Stars end up winning all three of those games, and use that start to eliminate Detroit in 5. Is this the year Minnesota gets over this hump?

Smythe Division



It looked like the Kings were gonna pull off the upset of Calgary, but the Flames bury LA with consecutive 7-2 wins to advance. Dominik Hasek, who did not play a game in Winnipeg during the season, as he’s still developing, comes up and plays the 5th game of their series with the Canucks, after Jets goalie Don Edwards gets hurt. Hasek wins it 4-2 to advance!

Hasek continues in net for the 2nd round, getting the game two shutout! After 7 straight starts, and wins in game 5 and 6 to tie the series, Hasek goes to the bench, as Don Edwards returns to the lineup. Edwards plays well, and Brian Lawton scores the biggest goal in Jets history, 28 seconds into overtime, to complete the comeback from a 3-1 deficit! Jets advance in 7!

NY jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one, and led 4-1 after a period. That lead extended to 6-2 after two, but the Whalers weren't done. Petr Kilma scores twice, and John Chabot added another third period goal to cut the lead to 1. Despite the momentum, Hartford could come no closer. 6-5 Ny wins the opener. The best team in the NHL really took it to the defending champs in game two. Dave Tippett and Kenny Linseman each scored twice, while Ray Bourque had two assists. Hartford was held to just 17 shots, all stopped by Phil Myre. The Islanders win game two, 5-0.

In game three, the Islanders continue their defensive advantage, shutting out Hartford for the 2nd straight game. Bob Bourne’s 2nd period goal was the winner. 2-0 Islanders. Facing a sweep, Hartford gets a little offense going in game four. Brian Mullen and Steve Thomas both get first period goals, but a late Ken Berry tally tied it up for New York. New York then scores 3 times in the 2nd, giving themselves what looks like an insurmountable 3 goal lead. Wayne Gretzky disagreed. The great one would assists on 3 straight Whaler goals tying it at 5. Willi Plett though spoils the comeback, and wins the series for NY late in the third. 6-5 Islanders. They sweep Hartford and go to their first finals!

Is this the year the North Stars finally play for a Stanley Cup? Billy Carroll thinks so, as he scores just a minute into game one. Chris Chelios follows that up to give the North Stars a 2-0 lead. Winnipeg’s Al MacInnis answers 30 seconds later, and Greg Gilbert has it tied after a period. Winnipeg would go up 5-2 in the 2nd, and despite 3rd period goals from Dino Ciccarelli and Joel Otto, Minnesota goes down. Jets win the opener 5-4. The North Stars play a much better defensive game in game two. They hold Winnipeg to just 18 shots and 1 goal. Chris Chelios would assists twice and be named the games first star. Minnesota ties the series with a 3-1 win.

Trailing by 1 in the third period of game three, the Jets get clutch goals from Jim Peplinski and Roger Hagglund, giving them a come from behind, 2-1 win. The North Stars would get a big 4 goal second period in game 4. That put them up 5-2 after the buzzer sounded, giving them enough of a lead to hold onto the eventual 5-3 win. The back and forth series is tied at 2!


After missing a few weeks, Don Edwards is back in the Jets net.

It looks like Minnesota has grabbed the momentum. Doug Crossman scores a minute into game five, and Tim Bothwell adds another first period goal. It’s 5-0 when the Jets finally score in the third, which ends up meaningless. Minnesota wins game five, 5-1. The North Stars are now just one game from effectively ending their long streak of failure in the playoffs(In my books, playing for a cup matters!). Tied at one in the 2nd period of game six, Joel Otto scores to give Minnesota the lead. Darryl Sittler then takes a pass from Lanny McDonald, and adds a third goal with 30 seconds remaining in the period. That goal by long time North Stars proves to be the winner. Minnesota wins 4-2, and takes the series in 6 games!!

Minnesota has been trying to get here forever. They have been a constant playoff failure for a very long time. THIS IS THEIR CHANCE!!! Now that they are finally in the finals, they have to know these oppurtunities are few and far away. The North Stars are deep. Their stars of the 70s are still here, playing with the stars of the 80s. The franchises top 3 scorers, Darryl Sittler, Lanny McDonald and Dave Taylor are all still here. Young stars Dino Ciccarelli, Chris Chelios and Joel Otto have become team leaders. This is a very good team that is hungry for a title.

The Islanders are fantastic. You don’t win 64 games without being fantastic. Tim Kerr is a legit top level goal scorer. Bernie Federko does everything, and Ray Bourque should win the first of many Pilote Trophies this year. They score goals, they don’t allow them. As much as I want to see this Minnesota team finally win a title, I don’t think they will. The Islanders are really talented. A loss here would surprise me.
