Taking Harry Heilmann out of the lineup for the first time in at least 3226 games. Vada Pinson's OF defense has killed my pitching staff this season, so he'll move into a platoon at DH with Heilmann for the rest of the year.

The budding first baseman, Christian Yelich, just did a thing. He got me 1000 PP for HR hit in 6 straight games. I don't think I've seen that before. Understandably so, because my Frogs have only recently tried to deal in the long ball. But, even more germane, this feat puts Yelich back in decent position for 30/30. Yelich has 26 HR and 27 SB with 15 games yet to be played. To date, only SE Sisler has accomplished 30/30 for the Frogs.

This one's gonna right down to the wire! 16 games left and I reckon 9 at most are winnable. In those 16 I have series' against Hayward, Zone 6, and The Spam, so could even end up 4th or (gulp!) worse in the division and that would be a real shame after what's been a pretty good season (with the obvious exception of my damn pitching roster!).

P420: With One Game Left...
...I again say, check out the NC West!
Miami and RKO play each other in what is essentially an eliminated-from-winning-the-division game, too. Quite an ending to the season!

The Piranha clinched a wildcard, and by a decent margin. We ended up winning 11 of the 16 remaining games.
We're up against the Seattle Orcas in the Wild Card Series, against who we have a season record of 8-11. If we manage to somehow win that, then the Piranha face division champions The Spam Spam, where our regular season record is a bit more palatable at 10-9. LET'S GO PORTLAND!

The Frogs (121-41, +413) cruised to another division crown, their 5th consecutive. The ballclub also topped 120 wins for the 3rd straight campaign and will attempt do something they've never done before--win back-to-back PL titles.
To do so, the Frogs will first have to fight their way past a DS matchup with the Cleveland Naps (88-74, +152). At a glance, it might seem as if the mighty Frogs are poised to steamroll the Naps with extreme prejudice. But, not so fast, my friends! Time for a deep dive on the playoff opponent... First of all, the Naps are a full 8 games below their Pythagorean expectation so I'm a little worried about the luck pendulum swinging back in their favor. What's more? The Naps made some pretty serious modifications as the season wore on. They seemed to go on a little shopping spree at the ASB: 100 Maddux, 100 Clemens, and 100 Seaver all materialized in the rotation. 100 TOTY Nelson Cruz also showed up. Nice run of packs? lol. That rather quite evens things up. Defense was a terrific problem for the Naps as they scraped the bottom of the conference in ZR (-49.8) and errors (109) while finishing 13th in defensive eff. (.663). All of their ballpark factors are neutral, which further underscores the defensive struggles. The manager noticed this as well, because gold Lou Boudreau has been plugged in at SS for a 100 Lindor that was having a poor season there. 1B, 3B, LF, and RF are all still defensive liabilities, but 91 Dykstra/88 I-Rod/88 Boudreau provide "defense up the middle" at least. SE Nomar at 2B is neither good nor bad (71) although I would cringe having a 71-rated defensive second baseman. Just my preference. If the Frogs are to advance, they'll need big performances from their star players. Ed Walsh had himself yet another year. Walsh tied a career high with 26 wins and set a career best with 9.0 WAR. Both stats led the conference. Walsh won't win pitcher of the year, however, because a 100 Carl Hubbell nearly won the pitching triple crown--and would have if not for Walsh notching 1 more win. John Smoltz is basically a shoe-in to win yet another reliever of the year award. He had his finest season yet (10-2, 26 SV, 1.37 ERA, 144.1 IP, 5.4 WAR). The Frogs are going to move him into the playoff rotation in a bit of managerial derring-do. Ozzie Smith may have had the best all around year. Imagine a 120-rated defensive shortstop that switch hits. Now, imagine this player also batted .313/.411/.439, hit 40 doubles, scored 90 runs (while batting 8th), and stole 21 bases. That's a recipe for a conference-best 7.6 WAR (likely to climb after defensive numbers are adjusted in the offseason). Christian Yelich is now rated 63 at 1B. Apologies for burying the lede like this.

Here comes the fun: the 103-59 Raccoons will play the 77-85 Volcanoes in the Wild Card Bonanza... and they also lost the season finale to the division-clinching Pittsburgh Red Sox, 27-1. Yikes. Dick Bartell, Roberto Clemente, and George Springer all got to pitch in a rout-in-progress, and amounted to 2.2 innings, 11 walks, and 11 runs.
I expect NOTHING. Except doom and pain of course. The Rebs, relegated from Perfect, almost managed to get relegated to Gold. They ended up 71-91, last team above the cutoff point. There was nothing to love here, all year long... KC did only one game better, 72-90, avoiding relegation by six games. The offense was a year-long disaster; only Freddie Freeman managed to qualify while putting up an OPS+ better than 100. Since most of these players have an established track record I dare proclaim that this was an aberration; they just all took an off year at the same time. ... everything will be better next year! ... surely...

The Raccoons finished the season with their best record ever at 131-31, though September was our worst month (18-9) which has me concerned. Neither potential WC opponent looks to be a threat, though an upset is always possible. Come to think of it, I only remember one time where the Raccoons lost in the playoffs to a team that wasn't comparable or above.
The Spearfish Blackhaws, on the other hand, are going to be very tough to beat. They won 126 even though they were a bit unlucky and they also finished with 16 straight wins. They also took 2 of 3 from us in our last series (we too 3 of 4 earlier in the season when we were hot) including one blowout. Their offense produced 1022 R and were also 1st in RA with 450. In the playoffs, I feel like it's the SPs that make the biggest difference and they've got Cy Young and Walter Johnson at the top of their rotation so that's going to be tough. But the rest of the rotation doesn't worry me too much (Hubbell, Smoltz and Maddux - they've not yet set a 4-man). Of course, if we manage to somehow get all the way to the WS (going for 2 straight), we'll probably have to face either 121 W Flatbush or 133 W Somerset. So it will be a difficult road to a championship, but that just makes it more enjoyable (especially when you win!). Good luck to everyone (including our fellow critters, those Portland Raccoons)!

P420: Don't Keep Us in Suspense!
Here's how everything played out in the NC West and P420 as a whole (more analysis to come later once Huntley's playoff opponent is set):

The YakAnglers win their division with 90 wins, 11 games up on the 2nd place team. Our reward is to face the 129 wins INKO Seagulls. Probably not going to end well for us. Yelich leads the league in HRs for us, a nice little PP bump is always welcome.
The Marathoners, who somehow made the playoffs last season, return to their normal ways and win 70 games and finish well out of any playoff chances. The Miners (97-66) were 3 games back with 8 to go when I went to sleep last night, had some late season magic in them. They win game 163 to take the division over the Naperville Knights. The Knights pretty much led the division the entire season.

P420: Huntley's opponent
First, in the NC, the Miami Jeters got their revenge against the RKO PackAndPlay, defeating them in the Wild Card game, 5-1. Next on the Jetes' revenge tour: the New Orleans Yankees, featuring triple-crown winner Josh Gibson (NC-leading .339/.407/.567, 219 hits, 35 home runs, 124 RBIs).
In the AC, Huntley will be facing the Wild Card game-winning Toronto Charmanders. On the one hand, Huntley went 6-0 against the Charmanders this season, winning 3-2, 6-4, and 12-7 at home and 8-6, 7-6, and 5-0 in Toronto; on the other hand, all those games were waaaaaaaay back in April and why do I feel like this whole thing is a setup? Toronto went 51-30 at home and 33-48 on the road, so winning the first 2 games in the series will be paramount for the Red Raiders (cue game 1 loss in 3...2..1..).

Belfast is about to be swept by a team it beat 16 out of 19 times in the regular season. There are no words. Belfast scored 903 runs this season to lead conference and score 3 runs in 2 games... PS: Congrats Secret lab in advance. |

Luckily, Huntley's Curt Schilling dons his bloody socks and throws 7.2 shutout innings. Lee Smith gets the final out in the 8th and Eric Gagne shuts the door in the 9th, and the Red Raiders escapes game 1 with a skin-of-their-teeth 1-0 victory. Game 2: Ed Walsh says, "I see you, Schilling, and raise you," throwing 8.0 shutout innings. Meanwhile, on offense, Mickey Mantle, Barry Bonds, and Joe DiMaggio combine to go 0-8. Fortunately, the rest of the offense goes 13-26 with 6 doubles (3 by Brett) and 2 homers, and Huntley wins going away, 11-0. So far, so good...

The Mashers had a strong second half, finishing 76-86 and avoiding relegation. Looks like next week will be another week of purgatory.

I lost to a division opponent in 3 games that I had a 19 game lead and massive run differential on...but history played out as they handed us 13 (30%) losses in the regular season as well. I have spent hours trying to figure out what tactical advantage they have.
