Walkers news: Team awards for April

Player of the Month: Nicky Delmonico: The 30-year-old third baseman batted .298 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 17 games. He scored eight runs while posting an on-base percentage of .394 and slugging percentage of .632.
Starting Pitcher of the Month: Argenis Batista: In three starts, Batista went 1-1 with a 1.04 ERA. He struck out 20 batters in 17.1 innings and put together a WHIP of 0.98.
Relief Pitcher of the Month: John Curtiss: The veteran right-hander got into 10 games, posted no record or saves and a 1.69 ERA. He pitched a total of 10.2 innings and struck out 18 with a WHIP of 0.75.

Walkers news: May 1 -- St. Louis 7, Cleveland 1

Record: 10-9, 3rd, 3 GB Des Moines
Nicky Delmonico went 3 for 4 with a double, a homer, two runs scored and four RBIs to help power St. Louis to a 7-1 win over Cleveland at Cleveland Stadium (1980).
Delmonico collected his first RBI in the opening inning, with a single off Guitar Heroes starting pitcher which scored Bo Bichette to make it 2-0.
Bichette had driven in the game's first run with a double, scoring Edmond Americaan who had led off the game with a single.
Delmonico hit a solo homer off reliever Tyler Beede to make it 4-1.
He also drove in a pair of runs in a three-run seventh, his double scoring Andrew Benintendi and Rhys Hoskins.
Delmonico also scored the game's final run scoring on a Jean Carmona single.
The River Walkers got a strong seven-inning outing from starter Argenis Batista, who allowed one run on three hits. He struck out 10 and walked two.
Phil Maton pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Reyes Moronta did the same in the ninth.

Walkers news: May 2 -- St. Louis 6, Cleveland 2

Record: 11-9, 3rd, 2 GB Des Moines
Brendan Spagnulo allowed one run on three hits over seven innings to help pitch St. Louis to a 6-2 win over Cleveland at Cleveland Stadium (1980).
Spagnuolo struck out nine and walked two during his time on the mound.
The only run for the Guitar Heroes came on a solo homer from Giancarlo Stanton in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1.
A two-run homer from the red-hot Nicky Delmonico off Cleveland starter James Paxton in the second inning staked St. Louis to a 2-0 lead.
Bo Bichette went deep of Paxton in the third increasing that advantage to 3-0.
Andrelton Simmons made his first hit of the season a big one, with a solo shot off Paxton in the fourth.
Larry Ernesto had an RBI double later in the inning, making it 5-1.
John Curtiss worked a scoreless eighth inning for the Walkers.
Bobby Poyner allowed a solo homer to Brian Dozier in the ninth, but other than that allowed no other damage.

Walkers news: May 3 -- St. Louis 5, Cleveland 4

Record: 12-9, 2nd, 1 GB Des Moines
Andrew Benintendi connected on a two-run double with two outs in the top of the ninth inning off Cleveland reliever Sean Doolittle to help give St. Louis a 5-4 win at Cleveland Stadium (1980).
With the victory, the River Walkers completed a three-game sweep of the Guitar Heroes.
Doolittle retired the first two batters in the ninth before pinch-hitter Larry Ernesto got things going with a single.
Bo Bichette kept the game going with another single, and both would score when Benintendi connected on his double down the right-field line.
St. Louis starter Aaron Nola cruised through the first five innings throwing a shutout before Cleveland got to him in a big way.
Bryan Reynolds and Jake Bauers both singled before Austin Riley drew a walk to load the bases for Giancarlo Stanton, who smacked a 1-2 pitch 388-feet over the wall in left field to put the Heroes ahead 4-3.
Bichette had hit a two-run homer off Cleveland starter Drake Fellows to put St. Louis ahead 2-0.
Rex Brothers issued a bases-loaded walk to J.T. Realmuto in the sixth, making it 3-0.
Nola worked 5.2 innings and exited after Stanton's slam, allowing four runs on five hits.
Phil Maton got the final out of the sixth, but was unable to return because of an undisclosed injury.
Jake Brentz stepped in and kept Cleveland off the board in the seventh and eighth.
The ninth belonged to Tommy Kahnle, who was perfect to earn his third save.

Walkers news: Maton to IL; Ward called up

The St. Louis River Walkers have learned that right-handed relief pitcher Phil Maton could miss up to two weeks with a strained oblique and placed him on the 10-day disabled list.
Right-handed reliever Thad Ward has been called up from AAA Memphis.
Maton, 30, has pitched in 11 games this season putting together a record of 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He has worked a total of nine innings, during which he has struck out eight and posted a 0.67 WHIP.
At AAA, the 26-year-old Ward has served as closer for the Redbirds going 0-1 with three saves in five appearances. He has pitched six innings and struck out 12, and posted a 0.37 ERA.

Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run home run to highlight a six-run sixth inning as St. Louis rallied for a 6-2 win over Twin Cities at Metrodome (1996).
Down 2-0, Edmond Americaan and Bo Bichette got the outburst going with consecutive one-out singles off reliever Carlos Alejandro Ramirez.
Benintendi followed with his three-run shot, a 371-foot drive into the right-field seats.
Tim Hill replaced Ramirez but the River Walkers kept on hiting.
Rhys Hoskins and Nicky Delmonico both singled before a walk to Larry Ernesto to load the bases.
Another walk, this one to Jean Carmona, scored a run making it 4-2.
Nick Lodolo then got the ball, only to allow a sacrifice fly to J.T. Realmuto and a pinch-hit double from Michael Toglia, which scored the inning's final run.
St. Louis starter Kyle Hendricks (3-1) worked five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked one.

John Curtiss handled the sixth inning and the seventh belonged to Bobby Poyner.
Just called up, Thad Ward allowed a pair of hits but no runs over the final two innings to close it out.

Walkers news: Buxton off IL; Ernesto returns to AAA

The St. Louis River Walkers have removed outfielder Byron Buxton from the injured list and sent outfielder Larry Ernesto to AAA Memphis.
Out since April 24 with a bruised hand after being hit by a pitch, the 29-year-old Buxton has hit .250 with two homers and seven RBIs in 13 games.
Ernesto, 22, got into seven games while with the River Walkers hitting .214 with a homer and three RBIs.

Record: 13-10, 1st (Tied/w. Kansas City and Des Moines, 2.5 GA Quad City
Colton Welker connected on a two-run double off St. Louis reliever Brad Hand with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning to help lift Twin Cities to a 3-2 win at the Metrodome (1996).
The River Walkers' Byron Buxton opened the game with a triple off Snow Cats starter Joey Luchessi and scored when Andrew Benintendi lifted a sacrifice fly.
Twin Cities tied it in the fifth when Bradley Zimmer led off the inning with a homer off St. Louis starting pitcher Alex Faedo.
A hit by pitch of Jameson Hannah by Faedo got things started for the Cats in the sixth.
Jonathan India then drew a walk before a Jake Burger singled loaded the bases and ended the day for Faedo,
Hand got the call and struck out Zimmer for the second out.
But Welker smacked a 2-0 pitch over Buxton's head in center, scoring Hannah and India to put Twin Cities up for good.
St. Louis did get a run in the ninth off reliever Thyago Vieria on a RBI double from Michael Toglia.
But Toglia would remain parked at second as Vieria retired a pair of pinch-hitters Edmond Americaan (fly out) and J.T Realmuto (ground out) to end it.
Lucchesi lasted just an inning, allowing the one run, before having to exit with a sprained ankle.
A parade of seven relievers did the rest of the work for Twin Cities.
Pedro Fernandez handled the first two.
Tim Hill, Carlos Alejandro Ramirez, Nick Lodolo, Tobias Myers, Cody A. Reed and Vieria all worked an inning apiece.
Lodolo earned the win, his second, Viera collected his fourth save.

Walkers news: May 6 -- Twin Cities 2, St. Louis 1, 10 innings

Record: 13-11, 2nd (Tied/w. Kansas City) 1 GB Des Moines
Bradley Zimmer had a pair of big hits, a seventh-inning homer and a double which set the stage for the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, to help Twin Cities down St. Louis 2-1 at the Metrodome (1996).
Zimmer broke open a scoreless game with his two-out homer off River Walkers starter Argenis Batista with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
St. Louis tied it in the top of the ninth after Nicky Delmonico opening the inning by reaching on an error by Twin Cities first baseman Jake Burger.
He then scored when Michael Toglia doubled off Cats closer Thyago Vieria.
But Twin Cities would win it in the 10th against Walkers reliever Jake Brentz.
Burger opened the inning with a single and moved to third when Zimmer doubled.
Alexis Pantoja came through with the inning's third straight hit, a single to score Burger with the winning run.
Twin Cities starting pitcher Joe Gatto tosssed five shutout innings, allowing just two hits.

The Cats needed to shuffle through eight relievers to finish it off.
Nick Lodolo, Pedro Fernandez, Carlos Alejandro Ramirez and Cody A. Reed all worked an inning apiece.
Tim Hill got the final out of the top of the 10th and with it the win, his second of the season.

Walkers news: Simmons to IL; Holt called up from AAA

The St. Louis River Walkers have placed shortstop Andrelton Simmons on the 10-day disabled list and called up veteran infielder Brock Holt from AAA Memphis.
Simmons suffered a strained oblique in a 2-1 10-inning loss to Twin Cities on May 6. He is expected to miss a week.
In 13 games this season, the 33-year-old Simmons has batted .160 with one homer and one RBI.
Holt, 34, has batted .429 with no homers and two RBIs in seven games for the Redbirds.

Nicky Delmonico's three-run homer in the top of the seventh inning snapped a tie and helped lead St. Louis to a 6-3 win over Twin Cities at the Metrodome (1996).
With the win, the River Walkers split a four-game series with Snow Cats. Twin Cities won the middle two-games of the series.
Bo Bichette got things going for St. Louis in the seventh drawing a lead-off walk from Nick Lodolo, who then hit the next batter, Rhys Hoskins, with a pitch to bring Delmonico to the dish.
Facing a 3-0 count Delmonico smashed a Lodolo offering 341 feet over the fence in left for a three-run blast.
St. Louis had owned a 3-2 lead before the Snow Cats tied it in the bottom of the sixth on Jean Carlos Arias two-out double off reliever Bobby Poyner.
Walkers starter Brandon Spagnuolo had started the sixth and retired the first two batters before walking Will Banfield and allowing a single to the pitch, Lodolo.
That ended his day, as Poyner came in to face Arias.
Spagnuolo worked 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on six hits.
Poyner did get the final out of the sixth.
Poyner (1-0) also got the win.

John Curtiss handled the seventh and got the first two outs of the eighth.
Tommy Kahnle recorded a four-out save, his fourth of the season.
Delmonico finished the game with five RBIs, also contributing a run-scoring single in the third and a sacrifice fly for an RBI in the sixth.

Walkers news: Toglia to IL; Rutland comes up from AAA

The St. Louis River Walkers continued to fight the injury bug, as rookie outfielder Michael Toglia suffered a strained oblique while running the bases against Twin Cities on May 7.
The 24-year-old Toglia, who was batting .213 with a homer and eight RBIs in 24 games with the River Walkers is expected to not be able to play for a week.
Being called up from AAA Memphis is outfielder Steve Ruland.
In 24 games with the Redbirds, Ruland has hit .284 in 24 games with seven homers and 18 RBIs.

St. Louis broke up a 1-1 game with five runs in the top of the third inning and went on for a 9-2 win over Chicago at Wrigley Field (1979).
Three consecutive one-out hits, singles by Andrew Benintendi and Rhys Hoskins and a double from Nicky Delmonico, got things rolling against G-Men starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood, as Delmonico's RBI made it 2-1.
All the rest of the runs came with two outs.
Jean Carmona scored one with a single. J.T, Realmuto plated two with a double.
Pitcher Aaron Nola drove in the final run with another single, and sent Chatwood to the shower.

Rookie Steve Ruland enjoyed quite a major-league debut.
His home run in the fourth inning made it 6-1. He finished the game 4 for 5 with a homer, a double, two singles and two runs scored.
Carmona also enjoyed quite a game. He was 3 for 4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored.
Nola allowed a run in the first, but shut down the G-Men through the seventh after that.
He allowed five hits over his seven innings, striking out three and walking one.
Bill Warson allowed a meaningless run in the eighth and also took care of the ninth.

Walkers news: May 9 -- Chicago 8, St. Louis 1

Record: 15-12, 2nd, 1 GB Des Moines
Down 1-0, Chicago exploded for three runs in the bottom of the third inning and four more in the fourth to power it to an 8-1 win over St. Louis at Wrigley Field (1979).
Cruz Calderon had the big hit of the third inning with a two-run double off River Walkers starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks.

Marcell Ozuna plated the third with a single.
Josh Donaldson started the fun in the fourth with a one-out solo homer.
Petey Halpin plated the second with a double. Caldron drove in the next two with a double.
A single from Victor Caratini made it 7-1 and ended the day for Hendricks.
Chicago starter Shohei Ohtani worked five innings, allowing none run on two hits. He struck out five and walked none.
James Pazos handled the second.

Roberto Ozuna (1.1 IP) and Jorge Guzman (1.2) closed out the win.
Walkers outfielder Andrew Benintnedi left the game after making a diving catch in the bottom of the sixth.
The extent of the injury remains unknown.
