I love math
"It's an 82-game season. We weren't going to go 80-3 or whatever it was." -- Boston Bruins forward Brett Ritchie

I'm a romantic myself, so I sort of love myth.
Anyway, this is a reminder that the vast majority of professional athletes are perforce not rocket scientists.

Are there any sports stars your side of the pond known for the intellect ? I know there was a boxer over here and football (soccer) player known for their brains, I'll have to look them up, I actually think the footballer had mental issues and tried or succeeded in killing himself.

I wonder how often he was responsible for "too many men on the ice" penalties.

There was, is, Bill Bradley of the New York Knicks. I'm sure that there were, are, quite a few others.
I don't mean to disparage - not everybody needs to be an Oxford scholar and being so is no determiner of human grace and decency - but the exceptions prove the rule. I would imagine that it would be quite difficult to be an Oxford scholar AND a professional athlete, given the extraordinary demands upon each. There's only so much time in the day.

Robert Smith earned a medical degree. I remember him arguing with the Ohio State coaching staff because they didn't want him going to class.

And then he left early for the NFL. I always thought that was a bit hypocritical. I remember Beano Cook calling him out for that on ESPN. Still, it's nice to know that Mr. Smith finished his undergraduate degree and attained his original goal of being a physician.

Ken Dryden (Montreal Canadiens goalie) left the league at the peak of his career to work at a law firm and complete his law degree, then returned to the NHL. After his playing career was over he was elected for a few terms to the Canadian House of Commons.
