The Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League (MLB 2001)

Welcome back to the Saga of the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League, which is a Major League alongside the National League.

You can read about how this came to be in my previous dynasty here: The Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League (MLB)

Now we are 50 years on from the beginning of the World Series Era and it is 2001. The Major Leagues have expanded to 32 teams, with each League now consisting of two 8 team divisions.

This incarnation of the universe is radically different from its predecessor and will, hopefully, bring me more challenge and enjoyment.

Gone are the 7 levels of minor leagues. In their place are only 2 levels: A Ball and B Ball. A Ball is equivalent to AAA in the real modern Baseball world. Each Major League team has one A Ball affiliate and every A Ball team is an affiliate of a Major League team. B Ball is equivalent to AA in modern Baseball. There are 32 B Ball teams and they are not affiliated with any major league teams. Each January the Major Leagues have a 6 round draft to select players from the B Leagues. The B Leagues replenish their supply of players exclusively through scouting discoveries.

Gone also is free agency. Some may believe that this will make the game easier because I will never lose a player that I want to keep. We can be over budget and still re-sign all of our players and run in the red as long as we want. However, It seems to me to be a lot tougher to build a team because there are no players to sign to fill holes. If you have a hole at second base, for instance, with free agency enabled, there will almost always be a player you can get for free to plug the gap at the least, and usually someone pretty decent that can be an asset to the team. Without free agency, there are no free players; everyone must be drafted or traded for. And running in the red will severely limit your trading options. If we ever build our team up to perennial powerhouse status, we can consider enabling free agency.

Along with the abolition of free agency, I have removed waivers and any restrictions to moving players from the majors to the minors. Once a player belongs to a team, he is theirs until they release him. This is more to help the A.I. teams than me, as I got tired of seeing all the good players (especially pitchers) they routinely lost trying to navigate the option and waiver rules.

Also booted from our universe are all the scouts. We are now a stats only league with "Other Ratings" shown on a 1-10 scale with show higher ratings than 10 enabled. Overall Ratings are turned off as are batting and pitching current and potential ratings.

A.I. player evaluation settings have been restored to the defaults, as have the trading settings (Average/Neutral). However, a new House Rule is that all trades I initiate must strictly be one player for one player. The way I built the old Beavers from a 95 loss team to a 95 win team overnight was by alternately trading quality for quantity and vice versa. Making only one for one trades should eliminate any possibility of creating an instant contender (I hope). However, I cannot abide by the recommendation that I make NO trades in the first season. I cannot see the point of keeping any players around that have zero chance of ever worming their way into my heart. Players that have low work ethic, iron gloves and lead cleats cannot be tolerated....

One other change is that the Injury setting has been lowered to Normal (OOTP Classic). This is because 1) the pool of replacement players to sign to the minor leagues is very limited and 2) it became a little ridiculous the way so many pitchers were turned into automatic injury victims every time they took the mound. Drafting players from the B Leagues will greatly help us avoid injury prone players, because all the players will have at least a season or two of injury history to peruse. Drafting players in the Amateur Draft with the Injury Rating not shown was just a shot in the dark and bit us pretty hard with the one high draft pick we ever had.

Here are all the teams and their park factors. Giant Stadium is a clone of Yankee Stadium and Derks Field in Salt Lake City is a clone of New Comiskey Park in Chicago. All Factors were based on an average of what the park showed from 2001 to 2018, except for Coors Field, which is based only on 2006 to 2008, because that period was the least drastic in its history, and Multnomah County Stadium, which is a retractable roof stadium, who's factors are based on Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium, 1987-96. We had to give the Skydome back to Toronto since they are now in the League. Since I usually have teams that are good at pitching and defense and struggle to score runs, I wanted a hitter friendly park to mask that somewhat (though it will probably be a while before we have any good pitching in Portland). During the period we have modeled, it is a good hitter's park, but not the Launching Pad it was in the 1970's and early 80's.

It has been 50 years since my grandfather led the Portland Beavers to victory in the first ever World Series and built them into the first dynasty of the Era. Since his retirement, the team has established a record of futility even more remarkable than his triumphs. They have a current streak of 15 straight seasons with 90 of more losses and have lost 100 or more in 5 of the last 6. Their last campaign ended with exactly 100 defeats, but they ended a string of 5 straight last place finishes because the Sacramento Solons lost 102 games.

Editor's Note: I pre-simmed 1970-2000 and insured Portland's status as a loser by forcing them to pick last in each draft and then releasing their first pick. So, in essence, every team got two picks before Portland got one. I also set their budget to a meager number to inhibit their ability to trade for any decent players.

The Beavers finished 2000 10th in scoring in the 16 team Pacific Coast League (682) and dead last in runs allowed (866). The offense was led by a pair of hitters that combined for 84 HR and 261 RBI! Unfortunately, they are both first baseman, so one of them had to play 3rd, where he was not very good and the one who played 1st is a horrific fielder. Luis Hernandez (31-R) was the horrific fielder at 1st (-26.8 ZR), but he hit .287 with 42 HR and 121 RBI. He will be dangled on the trade market. Glenn Snowden (23-R) was the one who played 3rd (-14.9 ZR), but he is much better at 1st. And he is young and a budding superstar. He hit .338 with 42 HR and 140 RBI! 1.012 OPS! However, there are no other hitters worth much. Only one other player managed to reach double figures in HR and he hit 11 and had a .693 OPS playing the outfield.

The pitching staff was led by no one. Only two pitchers managed to start a game for the Beavers and have an ERA under 5.00 and they had ERA's of 4.43 and 4.53. The lowest ERA in the Bullpen was 3.59 and he only pitched 47.2 innings. The closer had an ERA of 3.94 and gave up 11 HR in 61.2 IP. The youngest pitcher in the minors will be 30 by the time next season starts....

We have 54 players under contract and almost 1/3 of them are slackers (17).

I decided to wait until after the B League Draft in January before making any trades.

Here are the results of the first round of the B Leagues Draft and all 6 picks made by the Portland Beavers.

Pitching is the #1 need for the Beavers, but I could not pass up Fernando Mexicano. Bobby Johnson, who Seattle picked 12th, would have been my pick if I had gone for pitching.

This will be real interesting to see how the concept of drafting from the “B” league each year will work. Looking forward to see how it goes and how quickly you can get rid of the 17 slackers

I decided to see if Seattle would take a player who hit 42 HR and had 121 RBI for their first pick of the draft, P Bobby Johnson. They would! So, we made our first trade.

Trade #1:
1B Luis Hernandez (31-R) to Seattle for P Bobby Johnson (21-R).

I toyed with with idea of enjoying a season with 2 40+ HR hitters in the lineup, but Hernandez will be 32 by the time the season starts and would not be part of the long term rebuilding process anyway. Plus, he is a horrendous defender.

Johnson throws a 91 MPH fastball plus 4 other pitches. He spent 3 seasons in the B Leagues without a single injury, not even a blister. Hopefully, he will anchor our pitching staff for the next 15 seasons.

Trade #2:
RF Bill Cunningham (34-R) to San Francisco for C Marcell Amici (30-R)

Cunningham had 1 AB for Vancouver last year and Amici had 20 AB for Phoenix (A), only getting 3 hits (.150). But we only have 3 catchers under contract and they are all slackers and 2 of them are slow as molasses.

Trade #3:
1B Raul Fachinetti (28-R) to Montreal for C Craig Petitto (26-R).

Fachinetti is a career .250 hitter in 4 Major League seasons, but he is too slow to be a Beaver. Petitto hit .280 in A Ball and drew some walks and is a good defender and we need catchers desperately. This trade gives us 5 under contract and we will have to keep the 3 slackers around at least for a season.

Trade #4:
SP Guy Boeck (29-R) to Boston for SP John Cox (28-L).

A stinky slacker for a stinky stand up guy. Boeck was 5-16 with a 5.54 ERA in 33 starts for the Beavers. Cox had a 5.56 ERA in 2 starts for the Braves. He was 13-10 with a 3.71 ERA in A Ball.

Trade #5:
SP Steve Gonzalez (31-R) to Sacramento for RP Bobby Weatherford (30-R).

Another stinky slacker for a humble stinker. Gonzalez led the PCL in walks (117) and went 11-15 with a 5.33 ERA. Weatherford had a 3.94 ERA in relief.

Trade #6:

RP John Neal (27-L) to Los Angeles for RP Dave Unterbrink (30-R).

An injured slacker for an injured hard worker. Neal will be out until at least May and Unterbrink will be out until June. Both had talent before getting hurt.

Trade #7:
3B Miguel Castro (25-L) to Atlanta for SS Franklin Felix (23-R).

Another slacker hits the road. Castro hit .275 in 432 AB, but with no power and no walks (.655 OPS). Felix was drafted in the 3rd round of this year's B League Draft. He hit .298 with no power. He's a hard worker.

Trade #8:

3B Danny Gomez (30-R) to Boston for 2B Shannon Kuchta (23-R).

Gomez is yet another slacker. He has been the Beaver's 2nd baseman for the last 7 years, batting .243 with a .649 OPS. Kuchta was drafted in the 2nd round of this year's Draft. He hit .274 with 19 HR and is a hard worker.

Trade #9:

RF Jorge Flores (34-R) to Sacramento for LF Jerry Grant (30-L).

Another slacker gone. Flores hit .270 with 20 HR in Vancouver (A). Grant is the only player anyone would give us who was not slow as molasses. Only 3 players were offered when Flores was shopped. Grant is a career .236 hitter in 7 Big League seasons.

Trade #10:
SP Steve Schroeder (33-R) to Dallas for 2B Doug Dietz (29-L).

Schroeder is a slacker that has never pitched in the Majors. 'Nuff said. Dietz is a career .260 hitter in 7 seasons in the Majors. He's selfish, but not a slacker.

Trade #11:
RF Cal McClure (26-R) to Pittsburgh for LF Don Neumann (30-S).

McClure hit .311 at Vancouver (A), but is a slacker. Neumann is a career .274 hitter in 7 seasons for Denver.

And that will do it for trades this off season. We have more slackers on the roster, but none that anyone will give us anything for. So they will either be cut or kept around for one more season. We have quite a few minor league offers out for free agents that were booted off rosters after the Draft.

We began our schedule of 30 Spring Training games today with a 5 to 4 loss in 13 innings at Seattle's Training Complex. Fernando Mexicano (20-L), our first round draft pick, hit a home run. He is playing 3rd base. We have a lot of things to figure out this Spring, especially in regard to our pitching staff. Hopefully, it will not be injuries that determine who makes the team....

We ended or Spring Training schedule today with a 5 to 1 win against Los Angeles at our Training Complex in Glendale, Arizona. We finished with 14 wins and 16 losses. If we can duplicate that in the regular season, I will be very pleased. Dallas and Boston had the best Spring records at 20-10. Salt Lake City brought up the rear at 10-20.

Next up:

Meet the Beavers!

Opening Day starters are highlighted in blue.

Editor's Note: Since we are now in the 21st century, pitching speeds will be reported as they are in game and not 5 MPH slower. I did some research and one reason pitch speeds are generally higher today than they seemed to be 30 years ago is that they are now measured at release, when they were measured at the plate back in the day. We will report the low end of the velocity spread. Also, since pitch ratings are turned off, I cannot report on the quality of the pitches, only what the repertoire is.

Opening Day Roster
Pitchers
Starting Rotation

Steve Muir
26 year old right-hander from Ooltewah, Tennessee (a suburb of Chattanooga). 6' 3" 199 lbs. $50,000. An original Beaver. 90 MPH fastball with a curve and slider. Average bunter. Solid move to first and a decent fielder. 0-2 with a 5.74 ERA this Spring.
2000 (MLB): 10-17 4.43 ERA 35 GS 215.1 IP 228 H 24 HR 71 BB 102 SO 3.0/4.3 BB/SO per 9 for Portland

21 year old (22 on April 20) right-hander from St. Petersburg, Florida. 6' 2" 189 lbs. Rookie. Acquired in a trade with Seattle in January. 94 MPH over-the-top fastball with a curve, changeup, splitter and circle change. Not a good move to first. Decent bunter. Average fielder. Was the 12th pick in this year's B League Draft. We wanted to take him with our first pick, the 2nd of the draft, but could not pass up Fernando Mexicano. Was 2-1 with a 5.85 ERA this Spring, but his numbers were not that bad. He struck out 19 in 20 IP.
2000 (B): 19-7 2.51 ERA 33 GS 251.1 IP 203 H 6 HR 67 BB 193 SO 2.4/6.9 BB/SO per 9 for Elmira

22 year old right-hander from Punto Fijo, Venezuela. 6' 0" 186 lbs. Rookie. Drafted in the 2nd round of this year's B Leagues Draft. 93 MPH fastball with a curve and changeup. A very good bunter. Has an excellent move to 1st, but is not a good fielder. Was 2-1 with a 5.12 ERA this Spring, but his numbers also did not look that bad.
2000 (B): 13-12 2.64 ERA 33 GS 225 IP 181 H 8 HR 69 BB 193 SO 2.8/7.7 BB/SO per 9 for Modesto

Roger Lerer
27 year old left-hander from New Milford, Connecticut (near the border with New York). 6' 0" 182 lbs. $50,000. An Original Beaver. 92 MPH sidearm fastball with a slider, changeup and splitter. A very good bunter. Has a good move to first and is an average fielder. Was 2-0 with a 1.69 ERA this Spring, but walked 8 in 16 IP.

28 year old right-hander from Broomfield, Colorado (a suburb of Denver). 6' 0" 190 lbs. $52,500. An Original Beaver. 97 MPH fastball which he also throws with 2 seams and a changeup. Not a good move to 1st and is not a good fielder. He was in the Beaver rotation last year, but that is a role for which he is ill suited. As a reliever, I think he cam flourish. Was 0-3 with 6 SV and a 2.87 ERA this Spring. Struck out 18 in 15.2 IP.
2000 (MLB): 8-16 5.09 ERA 33 GS 189.1 IP 221 H 18 HR 87 BB 137 SO 4.1/6.5 BB/SO per 9 for Portland

Drafted in the 5th round of this year's B Leagues Draft. 93 MPH over-the-top cut fastball with a curve and changeup. Average move to 1st and a good fielder. 1 SV and a 3.00 ERA this Spring with 18 SO in 15 IP.

He was a 6th round pick in this year's B Leagues Draft. 87 MPH fastball with a curve and slider. Very good move to first and an average fielder. Made the team because he was the only left-hander to pitch decently this Spring. Did not allow a run in 11 IP and only gave up 4 hits.
2000 (B): 5-4 2.40 ERA 1 SV 48 G 82.2 IP 61 H 2 HR 32 BB 83 SO 3.5/9.0 BB/SO per 9 for Orlando

Jeff Gleason
24 year old right-hander from Newark, New Jersey. 6' 4" 204 lbs. $50,000. An original Beaver. 91 MPH fastball with a curve and changeup. Good move to 1st and an average fielder. 3.09 ERA this Spring.

Fielders
Catchers

Craig Petitto
26 year old who bats and throws right-handed from Frankfort, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago). Acquired in a trade with Montreal in January. 6' 1" 213 lbs. Rookie. A good receiver with an average arm. Not fast, but faster than most catchers. Hit .218 with a .532 OPS this Spring, but won the starting job for his defense and the fact that no other catcher hit any better.
2000 (MLB): .250/.357/.250 in 12 AB with 0 HR and 2 RBI and 0 SB for Montreal
2000 (A): .280/.376/.375 in 232 AB with 3 HR and 27 RBI and 0 SB for Ottawa

Glenn Oswell
33 year old who bats and throws right-handed from Woodstock, Georgia (a small town 30 miles north of Atlanta). An original Beaver. 6' 5" 225 lbs. $50,000. A solid receiver with an average arm. Stupid and Lazy. Very fast for a catcher and will steal a base. Last year's starter. Hit .194 with a .497 OPS this Spring and hopefully will not be with the team next Spring.
2000 (MLB): .202/.300/.298 in 450 AB with 4 HR and 45 RBI and 2 SB for Portland
MLB (10 yrs): .226/.312/.329 in 4429 AB with 70 HR and 489 RBI and 109 SB for Boston (1) and Portland (9)

Infielders
Glenn Snowden
24 year old first baseman who bats and throws right-handed from Prestonsburg, Kentucky (a very small coal mining town in the mountains of southeastern Kentucky). 6' 3" 203 lbs. $825,000. An Original Beaver. A good fielder at 1st, but not at 3rd, where he played last season. A below average runner. A very hard worker and a fan favorite. Hit .375 with an 1.100 OPS this Spring.
2000 (MLB): .338/.417/.595 in 612 AB with 42 HR and 140 RBI and 0 SB for Portland
MLB (4 yrs): .307/.368/.511 in 2158 AB with 99 HR and 374 RBI and 1 SB for Portland

Melvin Rodarte
31 year old second baseman who bats left-handed and throws right-handed from Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico. 6' 0" 198 lbs. $70,000. An original Beaver. Average range, but a good arm and very good hands. Can play anywhere on the diamond, except behind the plate. Good runner and will steal bases. Very smart on the base paths, but not so smart anywhere else. Hit .345 with a .928 OPS this Spring.
