Thanks! Finally, proof that ol' Lefty was not a visitor from another world, as his BRef pic would suggest!

Butch Hobson 1975

I still am awed by how some posters can keep up with the constant flow of images; I'm well behind on downloading/IDing myself. Now if Topps would provide the names, that would be a different deal, but detective work slows me up, even if it's only an hour's worth, I admit.

Anywho, here's another "baby" picture, Clell Lavern Hobson during his 2-game stint with the 1975 Red Sox. You can tell by the #51 on his back, rather than the more-familiar #4 he switched to the next year.

As an added bonus, that Detroit #43 in the background of the first pic? Billy Baldwin, future Met. (The throw-in that made the Staub-Lolich deal such a steal! Sigh.)

And a couple of Butch from (I think) the following spring, wearing a more common number:

(All pictures slightly tweaked for color/brightness, as I tend to do.)

Ron Lolich Confirmation needed

Greetings,

I would appreciate this fine forum's assistance in confirming that this pic as posted out on the T.V. folders is OF - Ron Lolich. I am almost certain it is as Ron supposedly wore #22 with the Tribe and I believe the number on his bill is as well (or maybe #33?).

I have also attached a pic of Ron as posted by bearman month's back. To me it's him but..... Either way if someone could make a confirmation that would be great. Thanks all!

Best Topps Vault Ever? Jack Kucek 1974

Not just in the Bill Veeck 1910-inspired White Sox uniform in which the pitcher spent most of his career - but in the version with the infamous short pants?

Never before seen a Topps photo with those pants.

And A Jack Kucek 1974 Postscript

Not quite on the previous scale, but a nice unusual find. Kucek is one of several '76 White Sox players depicted in the '77 Topps set shown in the white-crowned so-called "Baker's Cap" Sox hats so despised by the players that Veeck agreed to drop them in May or June, 1976. A clean version of that portrait shot from the '77 set has been posted - along with a never-before seen action pose:

Just For The Record

The aforementioned Kucek 1977 pose (shot in April, 1976) without - you know - all that messy card stuff and bad printing and the like.

(Off topic, relating to the airbrushed images posted above, this emphasizes a point I made a while back. We mock the work of Topps commercial artists of the '70s - but they were doing this on acetate negatives, none bigger than 2-1/4" x 3-1/4" and some closer to 2" x 2," while hunched over a light board with nothing to rely on but a couple of rulers and the sureness of their hand. In that context, it's pretty impressive, like guys who can paint all the presidents on a loaf of bread or something).

Ron Lolich

That's him, presumably photographed on September 23, 1973, in New York.

The #22 batting helmet would've likely belonged to his teammate Ted Ford, also a right-handed hitter, who wore that number. The two were on the roster together during Cleveland's last trip to Yankee Stadium, September 22 and 23. As we've seen in other Topps photo shoots - most particularly with the logo-free helmet that appears on several Tigers images in 1963-64 and another unmarked helmet worn by different Pirates of 1969 - helmets were often shared either for batting practice or just for the convenience of the photographer ("OK, put on a batting helmet").

Request to Merkle, or anyone with this, it seems that the best available photo of Bill Singer with the Twins is on the uber-rare 1977 Topps proof. Does anyone have that card, that image or something just as strong? (FYI, it was one of the few 77s Merkle did not post in reponse to an earlier request made about the elusive proofs.

FYI, a longstanding query of mine was answered, so I'd thought I'd share. I found in a 2010 opinion piece in the AJC, that when Satchel Paige was "activated" by the Braves in 1968 to qualify for his pension, he was awarded No. 65 by owner Bill Bartholomay. No roster I've ever seen for the Braves includes Paige. He did pitch, in an exhibition game.

It wasn't at all uncommon, in those days, for teams to carry an old timer, here and there, so they could qualify for their major league pension. They didn't have to be activated as players--activating in any team capacity was sufficient. For example, that's the only reason Sibi Sisti was hanging around the Pilots late in 1969. It was strictly about qualifying for the pension. Sisti coached even less than Satchel pitched.

Officially, Satch was signed in August 1968 as a "trainer" (though they referred to him at the signing, as a "pitcher/coach/trainer"). The number "65" given him was an allusion to the retirement age. For the most part, he was a good will ambassador, talking to fans and signing autographs. And he was a calming presence when MLK was killed.

But Satch, even at 62, wanted to pitch. The team wouldn't allow it. Satch's eyesight was disappearing by the day and they were afraid he wouldn't see a line drive comebacker. Nonetheless, Satch pitched an exhibition game at the end of September. He got six outs on 12 pitches, retiring Hank Aaron along the way.

The time for qualifying for a pension was shortened that off-season so Satch had qualified before the '69 season began. Nonetheless, he stayed with the club through the year and pitched in more exhibition games. Pitching for Atlanta against Richmond (their AAA franchise), Paige got the victory on April 3. The next day, he pitched another inning in relief. On June 5, he pitched again in a Braves v. Richmond contest that ended 8-7 in favor of the varsity. It was the first time in any of the exhibitions Satchel was charged with a run, but he also notched two strikeouts in his one inning of work.

Jesse Jefferson

The attached is from The Baltimore Sun Archive. The lines are probably because the photo was marked up for use in the newspaper. The photo is for sale at the following URL:

Baltimore Sun Photo Archive Photo of Jesse Jefferson Baseball Player ( HJG-382-BS ) : Players

I've purchased from this source before, and the actual purchased photo does not have the Baltimore Sun watermark. This collection supposedly will only be on sale to the public for a few more weeks.

Paul Lindblad of the Senators/Rangers and Dave Lemonds of the Cubs/White Sox. Both airbrushed pictures were used in the 1972 set (Lemonds on a two person rookies card).

The Lindblado photo is reversed. He was a left-handed pitcher.
