Batallion Royals

City: Batallion, Captial District, South Georgia
Population: 86,000
Home Field: Queen Elizabeth II Park (capacity: 5,500)

A map of Batallion, with the country's millitary base at the top of the map.

Any self-sufficient country has it's own millitary (or at least a base), and so this is where the curiously-named city of "Batallion" comes into play.

In the early days of South Georgia, this rugged coastline was home to a small number of British Army personnel, nicknamed the "South Georgia Batallion", which was part of an operation to set up a small base in the area. Before independance, South Georgia was a British territory. In the long run, when the country became independant, many of those stationed there were the backbone to an eventual quasi-independant army/navy/air force base.

The area around "Forces Station South Georgia" was eventually named 'Batallion', in honor of those that initially defended this land. Thus, the city of "Batallion" was born.

Now a thriving city, the baseball field has been named after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, representing the city's British heritage.

Fantastic idea. I've done this a few times in the past with OOTP and other games using SimCity and more recently, Cities Skylines. Great job and imagination with your story!

Port Charles Bandits

City: Port Charles, Captial District, South Georgia
Population: 34,000
Home Field: Gateway Park (capacity: 4,250)

A view of Port Charles, and it's prominent sea port. It is the oldest port on the island.

So, when and where did this populating of South Georgia start? The answer is in 1987 in an area that would eventually become Port Charles.

Back then, like many settlements that would eventually spring up on the island, it was known as a "Station".... Charles Station, to be exact. Named after Charles, Prince of Wales. A road, Explorer's Road, was constructed to cross what is now the flat lands of the Carse District (where the city of Barrington now stands, more on them later), and down to the rugged coastline of South Georgia's southern coast. This road brought supplies to many research stations which tested the soils and ice in the area. These stations eventually evolved into the towns of Pajt-Vorten, Annenkov, Gall, Penguin Point and Port Smith.

Initially, if you needed to bring in supplies, Charles Station was the only functioning Port on the island. By 1989, when the county became independant, other settlements spread, and in 1992, the town was renamed "Port Charles".

But what about the team's "Bandits" name? Was that a name-the-team contest? .....nope!

Back in the early days, the town of Charles Station kept growing, but policing was sparse, and some disgruntled port employees (who felt they were being underpaid) began to swipe firewood from other townspeople, to keep warm over the long stretch of the year where heating your house was necessary.

For quite a few years, no one knew who the "Port Bandits" were, but eventually they were caught in the act. The "chase for the bandits" was one of the first news stories in South Georgia newspapers, and so the Port Charles' new team was called the "Bandits".

Johanssen Suns

City: Johanssen, Captial District, South Georgia
Population: 66,000
Home Field: South Georgia National Stadium (capacity: 14,000)

South Georgia's capital, Johanssen. (Port Charles is to the top-right of this image)

There is one thing about South Georgia... it's bleep'in windy!

Thankfully, not everywhere! When the island became independent in 1989, a referendum was held to choose the island's capital city. It was between the original settlement in Port Charles, or Johanssen... a town next door on the shore of the Iris Bay, sheltered from much of the wind and harsh weather.

The citizens chose Johanssen thanks to it's lack of wind.

Despite not having a port (relying on Port Charles for it's resources), Johanssen thrived as a government town. It grew rapidly and became the hub of central South Georgia. In 1999, in order to compensate for the lack of a port, the city built the biggest airport in South Georgia.

Thanks to these factors, the city has become a bit of a white-collar town, concentrating on business and education. The town has further grown thanks to the relatively peaceful weather there. It sounds silly to win a captial city referendum thanks to wind..... but try to tell that to the airplane pilots who have to land their plane on the other side of the island in *bleep'in* Salvesen!

The white-collar culture means Johanssen is home to the largest University on the island: South Georgia University, home of the "Greencaps".... perhaps the most under-performing of the 4 schools playing in the SGUA (SG University Athletics) Baseball league.

Still, ever the city to think big, after building the biggest airport on the island, they then built the biggest baseball park, too. The "South Georgia National Stadium" holds 14,000 people, and is the home of the SGBL's Johanssen Suns!

Hmm.... a South Georgia National Baseball Team... let's get back to that at some point

Barrington Pintails

City: Barrington, Carse District, South Georgia
Population: 176,000
Home Field: Invescor Pintails Stadium (capacity: 8,500)

A map of Barrington.

Back in the old days (which, for South Georgia, was the 1980s), if you wanted to travel from the ports to the majority of the research stations on the southern tip of the island, you needed to trek "Explorer's Road".. a long, barren stretch of road which connected the relatively-modernized Port Charles/Johannsen area of the island, down to the Carse research stations.

Eventually, it was realized that the Carse flat lands made a good location for a town. It made the trek much more pleasant, and it gave the south part of the island a proper hub for business.

By the 1990s, the city of Barrington was founded, and quickly grew to become South Georgia's second-largest city. Now a true multi-industry city, Barrington is a popular spot for South Georgians who want a bit of entertainment and good restaurants. Those with a keen eye will notice two parks in town..... that is because Barrington also houses McLaren University, home of the "Saints".. a top college team in the SGUA.

Back in the early days of the town, "Explorer's Road" did have a few inhabitants: a giant flock of ducks called the "South Georgia Pintail"... the national bird of the island. As the city grew, the Pintail became the town's beloved mascot and a locally-known symbol for the area. There was no better name for their SGBL team : the Barrington Pintails !

Fun fact: The elevated highway which cross town is still called "Explorer's Road".

Port Smith Aces

City: Port Smith, Carse District, South Georgia
Population: 40,000
Home Field: Preston Park (capacity: 6,000)

A map of Port Smith.

"Smells like codfish?"
"Oh, it's just John."

....."oh, shut up!"
That is the old running joke.

Those living in Port Smith, located on the Vahsel Cape, on the extreme south-eastern point of the island, are all too familiar with the fish jokes.

The town was formed as a fishing town, supplying the island with a constant supply of Cod Icefish and Antarctic Krill (now you know where Grytviken's posh seafood restaurants get their supply). Admittedly, the pollution and general bad smell associated with fish processing has given the town it's unfortunate reputation. But, in recent years, Port Smith has attempted to clean up it's act by diversifying it's economy and clamping down on eyesores from processing plants.

Despite the blue-collar tinge of the city, there is a well-regarded University in town, "ECU", East Carse University. Founded in 2004 as a way to train and prepare locals for jobs outside fishing, it is a point of pride in town. On a side note, ECU is a powerhouse in College Baseball here.

In 2015, Preston Fisheries, the town's largest employer, announced they would bring SGBL baseball to the city, and place it in a "smell free zone" (a selling point which would have no doubt sounded ridiculous in any other town).

When it came to choosing a name, local newspapers were flooded with requests NOT to be named the "Fishermen", "Sailors" or "Fighting Cod". They wanted to stray away from the town's stereotype.... so, a name-the-team contest was announced, and the team was finally named the "Port Smith Aces", with a cartoon flying baseball ("Ace", of course) as their logo and mascot.

Still, all fish jokes aside, Port Smith is a crucial piece of the South Georgia puzzle, and supplies much needed food accross the island.

Inaugural Draft: Johanssen picks first, chooses power-hitting LF Kostiuk

Karl Peters, GSN correspondant
January 1st, 2015

As the new year dawned, it was a big day in the South Georgia sports scene. For the first time ever, pro sports arrives on the island. At the Shackleton Conference Center in downtown Grytviken, players, media and the management of the 12 newly-minted teams converged. In a few short months, pro baseball will be played all across the island, but who will go to which team? Answering that question was today's task.

It all started in November. A total of 996 baseball hopefuls young and old from all parts of the island (as well as abroad) registered for the Inaugural SGBL Draft in Grytviken. After going through a long list of tests and some simulated and exhibition games at Antarctic Stadium, scouting reports were prepared and the 12 teams were ready to choose who would represent them in the upcoming season. Of the 996 players available, 648 of them would be selected to play for either the big club or their minor affiliate.

In order to decide the picking order of the 54-round serpentine draft, a "powerball"-style lottery was held, and here were the results:

1. Johanssen Suns
2. Port Smith Aces
3. Grytviken Icebergs
4. Gold Harbour Bobcats
5. Pajt-Vorten Comets
6. Salvesen Aeros
7. Annenkov Vikings
8. Barrington Pintails
9. Batallion Royals
10. Husvik Valley Spartans
11. Nemessey Giants
12. Port Charles Bandits

As the afternoon arrived, the scouting reports seem to suggest that as many as two dozen players could be in the running to be selected first. The term "consensus #1 pick" seemed nowhere to be found. Unlike most traditional Amateur Drafts, this pool of players included a wide array of styles, positions, ages and levels of readiness for the big stage. The oldest player available was 42-year-old Closer Fernando Ramos of Argentina, who spent two decades in the pro leagues in Venezuela... while the youngest player was 17-year-old Quinlisk Macheta, who is still a Senior at Capital High School in Johanssen but decided to declare himself eligible anyway.

At 1pm, Ben Poelsma, the Johanssen Suns General Manager, stepped up to the podium to select the very first player.

"With the first choice in the South Georgia Baseball League Draft, the Johanssen Suns are proud to select Left-Fielder Patryk Kostiuk of Penguin Point!"

...and with that announcement, a cheer from Kostiuk's family erupted from deep in the conference center. Curiously, a cheerful yelp could also be heard from the Port Smith table, who pick second.

Patryk Kostiuk turns 28 in April. He is an average fielder but blessed with serious power. GSN's baseball expert and in-house scout Pete Magnussen rated him 10/10 for home run power, with his potential to make contact with the ball was nearly as impressive. Most scouts expect him to be a .300 hitter. His only knock was his average eye at the plate, and seemed to swing at needless pitches from time to time. Either way, he would be a soild SGBL player, and will now suit up with the Suns this upcoming season.

With the second choice, Port Smith selected left-handed Irish phenom Lonergan Hobbs, undoubtedly the best pitcher available. Hobbs is also turning 28 shortly and has been compared (at least in terms of style of play) with the legendary Sandy Koufax. His 94-mph fastball is not quite as fast as the Dodger legend, but the lefty posesses a fantastic curveball and changeup to compliment his fastball. He has dominated just about every league in Europe as a semi-pro and now moves half-way across the world to earn his living as a true pro baseball player.

Lonergan Hobbs

Here were the other first-round selections in the SGBL draft :

1. JOH - LF Patryk Kostiuk, 27 years old
2. PSM - SP Lonergan Hobbs, 27
3. GRY - SP Taka Buchannon, 28, power pitcher, but with mastery of 6 pitches
4. GH - CF Salik Friedl, 30, excellent defensive CF with HR power at the plate
5. PV - SP Oscar Monuz, 27, one of the best knuckleballers out there
6. SAL - C Coy Blazer, 24, good Catcher who can draw walks all day long
7. ANK - SP Erick Kozdras, 27, stands 6'5 and throws an intimidating fastball
8. BAR - RF Eric Butler, 26, speedy outfielder who can get on base
9. BAT - C Oskar Sorensen, 26, well-rounded player both defensive and offensive
10. HUS - RF Oukesson Thrane, 24, another speedster who gets on base very well
11. NEM - RF Darren Aitken, 31, stereotypical dominant slugger
12. PCH - 2B Baki Zacharshi, 27, best defensive infielder, great contact hitter

More news to come, so stay dialed in to GSN for the latest news on the SGBL! Three months left until opening day!

First ever league game scheduled to be played in South Georgia's capital city

South Georgia National Stadium in Johanssen

Dominic Fry, GSN correspondant
February 7th, 2015

If you had that baseball money stored in your savings account, here is a good time to transfer it back over and get your ticket to all the action!

The 2015 SGBL calendar was announced in a press conference today. Officials announced that each team would play a total of 126 regular season games, starting on the first Friday in April. This year's season is scheduled to kick off Friday April 3rd, and will conclude on Tuesday August 18th.

Interestingly, the first ever regular season league game will be played in the nation's capital city of Johanssen versus another big-market team, the Grytviken Icebergs. Even though all 12 teams will be in action on opening day, the Johanssen/Grytviken duel will be held at 1:05pm, while the other five games will be under the lights at 7:05pm.

Season and Opening Day Tickets will go on sale in the next few days, and, if the buzz around town is anything to use as a measure, there will be a great crowd on Opening Day. South Georgia National Stadium is the largest stadium on the island, with the ability of holding 14,000 fans.

GSN will have coverage for this historic game, and a review of the other five matchups around the league.

Other opening day games :

Pajt-Vorten Comets @ Barrington Pintails
Annenkov Vikings @ Port Smith Aces
Husvik Valley Spartans @ Salvesen Aeros
Gold Harbour Bobcats @ Batallion Royals
Nemessey Giants @ Port Charles Bandits

If you can't make it to your home team's game, remember to download the "GSN Radio" app on your smartphone and get all the exiciting live baseball action as it happens! All league games will be broadcast on the radio app, while featured games will be live on GSN Television on most nights of the week!

Stay tuned for more news coming up.

Opening Day : Grytviken Icebergs at Johanssen Suns

Grytviken Icebergs @ Johanssen Suns

LIVE COVERAGE
April 3rd, 2015

Welcome to GSN's live coverage of the first ever SGBL regular season game. Today, Grytviken will take on Johanssen : two teams which most people expect to become yardsticks in their respective divisions in the long term. The Icebergs play in the North Division, while the Suns play in the South Division.

It is a sunny but cool day. 54 degrees, with a breeze blowing in from right field at 10 miles per hour. Still, it is a picturesque setting for this historic game.

As Johanssen takes the field, let's take a look at the batting order for the Grytviken Icebergs, who will face them.

ICEBERGS

Notes
Some interesting points for the Icebergs. Their best player in spring training was their first baseman Antonio Muro. He batted .319, and swatted two home runs and 9 RBI. His discipline at the plate has been in question, however, so he will have to keep that in mind today. Pitching for the team today will be Taka Buchannon.. the team's first round selection in the inaugural draft. He is 29 years old, and can throw a fastball in the upper-90s, but he also has control of a half-dozen pitches. Expect him to be a major factor today and this season.

Meanwhile, this is what Johanssen's batting order looks like :

SUNS

Notes
The Suns star Patryk Kostiuk was a difference-maker in spring training, batting .350 . Meanwhile, the oldest player in the SGBL will also suit up for the Suns today. 41-year-old Norwegian Elias Gammelgaard will be at third base. Pitching for the team is 25-year-old fireballer Aguo Grangeman. During training, his fastball had been clocked at 101 mph.

So, tonight, two hard-throwing pitchers go head-to-head! Buchannon vs. Grangeman! Stay tuned....
