Nov 15th @ MIN
MIN - Bonehead is pondering this last minute loss after the team rallied from a two goal deficit in the third period and appeared headed towards a possible point or two near the end of regulation when LW Sean Bergenheim was called for holding the stick. On the ensuing PP D Ryan Suter converted with 1:24 remaining and another loss appeared in the column. The team was obviously pissed and Bergenheim profusely apologized but as the Captain quickly pointed out we win as a team, we lose as a team..." The assistant coaches are looking over the stats and Coach Pauwelyn joins them along with some of the players around the whiteboard, when Bonehead feels some anger building up and decided to go for a walk out to the rink... Wisely no one followed him this time.

Game Twenty one @ COL 11/16
COL- The quick flight out of Minnesota was probably best as Bonehead uses his time to review the stats and coaches notes. It seems overwhelming that the rest of the coaches feel this lineup is the one to go with. Coach Ramsay recommends putting C D. Shore back in over C S. Gomez on the second line. G T. Thomas is back between the pipes as agreed beforehand. So the team is ready to go and the coaches seem confident we can play our game against the Avalanche.
The first period shows the Panthers outshot by 13 - 7 margin but the hold the lead 1 - 0 as D Kulikov moved into the slot after dumping into the offensive zone. Two Panthers and three Av's battled for the puck when the puck came out from behind the net right to Kulikov, which left Av's G Varlamov helpless to stop the top shelf wrister. Despite the Av's hitting anything that moved there were no penalties called. The second period saw the Panthers nearly even up the shot total 21 - 22, but the ref's found their whistles this period as both teams saw PP time. The scoring and lead now belong to the Av's as C M Duchene scored twice, one on a PP tally. There still is confidence in the locker room and the Panthers seem confident they can beat this team. The tenacity and grit is evident and the Panthers are still rotating all four lines while Colorado has gone essentially with their top two lines. This pays off as LW Tomas Fleischmann scores twice on the even strength and the Panthers celebrate around Tim Thomas who made several outstanding saves keeping his team in the game and then sealing the win. |

Game 22 @ VAN Nov 19th
VAN - As the team arrives for the third game of a 5 game road trip, Bonehead and his staff have been conferring over the data sheets on the Canucks during the flight. Goaltender Tim Thomas asked and was told he was the starter tonight and Scott Gomez approached Coach Ramsay about his playing time, Gomez was told he was still scratched but to keep his head up, as a veteran, he knows he is only one injury from being back in the lineup.
The team is advised by Coach Pauwelyn that the top line of LW Sedin/C Sedin/ RW Burrows plays the most ice time and the second line and third lines are switched up per the Canucks coaches whim. Their defense is solid and so far has no player substitutions - so keep leaning on the defensemen! Tire them out! Again an early first period Panthers goal is the only score so far. RW Versteeg made the most of the cycling by his linemates and he was parked in the slot for the one timer past G Luongo. Shots are nearly equal 13 - 14 and the Panthers are really behind in FOW for a change. Bonehead makes no changes and jsut tells the team to keep forchecking and pressing the defense so they make mistakes. The second period is more of the same, although the shots lead swings in the Panthers favor 23 -22 and Captain Campbell tallies an ES marker early in the second for a 2 - 0 lead. The third period is the comeback period as the Canucks defense, which looked a little winded earlier in the game suddenly stepped up and the second Canucks defensive pairing of Hamhuis and Tanev scored just over three minutes apart to tie it up and send it to OT. The game has gotten noticeably chippier with several hard checks and a couple of fights in regulation, but in OT Daniel Sedin violently reacted to a hipcheck that he felt was a low bridge that wasn't called and he gives a two hander to the back of D Gudbranson's head and that of course is seen by the men in stripes and called - a five minute major penalty just :48 seconds into the OT. Panthers will be playing a 4 on 3 PP for the remainder of the OT! But they cant get it done! Panthers got off 5 shots over the last four minutes and twelve seconds but couldn't bury the biscuit in the basket... Of course Daniel Sedin is the only goal scorer in the entire shootout and the Panthers will leave Vancouver with only one point and very frustrated. |

Game 23 @ EDM Nov 21
EDM - Since the Boston Massacre, Bonehead and the coaches have stayed pretty constant with the team lines and TOI and the last few games have started to pay dividends. The coaches and players have fallen into a routine and only C Scott Gomez seems unhappy but he holds his tongue and is a true professional. Bonehead makes sure Gomez knows its appreciated and he will get in games. Coach Pauwelyn posts the Oilers special team stats and tendencies on the whiteboard and the team knows its roles.
The first period is pretty even although the Oilers are much quicker overall with their skating. This is causing some pressure and a couple of turnovers, but the team responds in the last 5 minutes of the first by burying 2 goals including a PP goal by LW Fleischmann. The second period is all Oilers and the team is lucky to only be trailing by one. The shot totals are 4 - 10 for the period and everything that went well in the first period has gone wrong this period. Bonehead notes the first line is -2 and adds five minutes ice time to line 4 from line 1. to combat the flying bodies. The third period is hard fought and the turnovers and giveaways by the Panthers are the story of this game. A late goal by the Oilers D N Schultz is the GWG and even after a late goal by C Shawn Mattias, it leaves the Panthers on the short end of the scoreboard when the final horn sounds. Bonehead tells the team that they let this one get away and pack it up and get back to the airport for the next flight, because tomorrow at Calgary is another game. |

Game 24 @ CAL Nov 22
CAL - Bonehead posts C Gomez is 2nd line C tonight and Markstrom is starting G on the whiteboard before morning practice and there is no griping or grumbling. The team is pretty quiet and concentrated on the task at hand. Coach Pauwelyn points out that Calgary is the highest scoring team in the league at the moment.
The first period is even but for the shots which favor Calgary 12 - 9. LW Fleischmann left the game after taking a shot off his body and he went directly to the dressing room. There has been no report from the training staff yet. Bonehead has seen no signs of the turnovers or unforced errors that plagued the team last night. Bonehead tells the team to rest up and keep playing hard and leaves the rest to his assistants. The second period sees some adjustments to a three line system for the Panthers and Calgary scores twice against one for the Panthers. Second period shots are nearly even 10 - 11 with the Flames holding the overall advantage 23 - 19. The Panthers open up on the Flames and quickly score four times in the first half and suddenly its a whole different game! Lines are switched up, players are mixing and matching and the Flames suddenly cannot perform like they did in the first two periods. The shots are even at 32 at the end of the game and the team celebrates around their goalie Markstrom. Bonehead is talking to Coach Ramsay about LW Fleischmann's injury and he has been sent to the local hospital for x-rays on his leg. Bonehead lets the team have the moment and heads back out to the ice rink to think... |
