Defensive Spectrum
The AI has no understanding of the defensive spectrum, it seems. My shortstop with 99 defense (100 at 3B) constantly gets shifted to 3B late in the game, with the backup 3B (71 rating at 3B/31 as SS) getting placed as SS. Online league, so I'm not doing play-by-play.

One thing I started doing a ways back is setting "defensive substitutions" to very rarely in game setup. Still get some goofy subs, but not as many.

In OOTP's defense it is a complex problem. In a typical MLB set up there are 120 teams (assuming 3 levels of minors) with roster limitations and injuries and game situations occurring each day. Unlike a human it is difficult to program the AI to anticipate extra innings, injuries and the concept of calculated risk such as using your second catcher to PH with a chance to win the game. I believe v14 has less multi-position players. Something that I've been asking for. That makes it more challenging.

I don't know much about programming, but I think an overall hierarchy shouldn't be too hard to program. It should just give preference to the top of the hierarchy moving down.
It won't be perfect (2B vs 3B, LF vs RF, etc), and I don't expect it to, but constantly moving my Gold Glove SS to 3B to insert a horrible SS (who is a decent 3B) is pretty bad. |

You can also set your SS to "force start" at SS. That should keep him from being moved to 3rd.
Not sure as I've never tried it, but worth looking into. |

I don't think that effects in game substitutions though, which seems to be the main issue.

No, once the AI starts pinch hitting, this guy will be moved around as before.

Agreed. I would love the ability to set some pre-set defensive alignments or something, but the AI should be able to do a better job without that.
