Any advantage to playing NHL(modern) vs NHL (custom)?

Is there a big difference between the two games because you can edit just about anything(but some things only on July 1st) in the modern NHL?

In general, you can only edit league rules and structure on July 1st. The main thing I'd attribute to modern NHL over custom is that you get the international tournaments, players going to other countries or coming from other countries, and things like that. If you're not concerned about the world outside of the NHL, AHL, and CHL then custom is probably just as good. It'd run faster for one and probably has freedom to do as you want with the rules.
