Suggestions for Player Rating Rut

I'm in the 16th season of a historical league I created. I find myself signing/drafting guys based on their ratings and it seems to be losing some mystique.

I have scouting turned off, ratings on a 20-80 scale, with recalc off.

I tried scouting back in OOTP12 or 13, and I either did something wrong, or I'm not sure as by the time the draft came around I had a handful of guys scouted and it seemed like I had no information on anyone after the 2nd round, which didn't seem realistic and very dangerous.

I realize that since it's a historical replay there are guys I just know about that will be good, but I feel like there are no surprises or hidden diamonds the way I'm playing now.

What do y'all recommend to add some intrigue and surprises (good and bad) to the players as far as ratings go? If you could explain some things you recommend or do and how it effects this now boring aspect I have I would appreciate it.

1. Use fictional players instead of real - then you'll have no idea who's going to be good and who isn't.

2. Turn off recalc - then real players will develop with the engine and there will be surprises too. Babe Ruth might turn out to be a dud, some one else who was a dud irl might turn out to be a stud.

when you say scouting is off, does that mean 100% accurate?

turn it to at least normal. with a good scout that will be fairly accurate, though. i don't send the scout out much, to be honest. i check on 1st rounders and such, but i don't know how much it helps.

the more inaccurate you make it, the more you'll use stats, OSA, etc..

i play with normal currently, but i think i am convincing myself to turn it down as i type this.

Fictional players, no scouting, or very low, and stats only. No stars, no ratings shown. Then you are "forced" to pay attention to individual stats. Drafting more of a challenge, signing free agents more of a challenge. You'll never get bored, trust me!
