2023-2024 NHL/Hockey thread

Let's start things w/this bozo reporter asking the "average man on the street" Chicago Blackhawk questions. And the dude happens to be the Blackhawks GM.

KIngs news: Trevor‘s coming home!!!

The perennial winner of the team's "Unsung Hero" Award (to the point where it has been suggested the award be renamed for him when he retires) will only be getting bottom-six playing time, altho given that the Kings shipped out 3 forwards to get Pierre-Luc Dubois, the logjam has eased.

(I will wish Alex Iafallo well, but I get that those are the pieces one has to trade in. Not so certain on trading Gabe Vilardi, however. That has the potential to backfire severely, I worry. And it is not as if we were overloaded with centers, so throwing Kupari into the mix worries a bit, too.)

The Kings have also signed Cam Talbot and David Rittich to one-year deals, so I gather it is bye-bye to Korpisalo, too. We offloaded Cal Peterson (and his contract) to Philly in exchange for a washed-up Kevin Connauton (which was probably for the best), but that means that it is Pheonix Copley and Rittich/Talbot and then who knows? You shouldn't need six goalies to win a Cup as VGK did, but going forward with just an AHL graduate and two over-30 retreads worries me a bit, no lie.

It's a good thing we resigned Gavrikov or we would have nothing for the Jonathan Quick trade. So it looks like Quick and Peterson and Sean Walker and a #1 and a #2 for Vlad, basically.

So we have to worry about the backline, too. We have two pairs (Drew Doughty and Mikey Anderson, Gavrikov and Matt Roy) and then what? Alex Edler is a Free agent, Walker is in Philly and Sean Durzi was somehow sent to Arizona for a #2 that went to Winnipeg for P-LD. I assume we were clearing salary space, but Durzi was worth more than the nothing we got. Sigh. I hope this means we think Brandt Clarke is ready, but he's still on a 2-way deal, so who knows if we will keep him all season.

We signed Andreas Englund to a 2-year deal, despite his not being able to hold a spot in Colorado so...eh.

So here we are:

G- Pheonix Copley /David Rittich/Cam Talbot

D1- Mikey Anderson/Drew Doughty
D2- Vladislav Gavrikov/Matt Roy
D3- Brandt Clarke?/ Jordan Spence?
D other- Tobias Bjornfot/Jacob Moverare/Andreas Englund

L1- Quinton Byfield/Anze Kopitar/Adrian Kempe
L2- Trevor Moore/Philip Danault/Viktor Arvidsson
L3- Kevin Fiala/Pierre-Luc DuBois/Arthur Kaliyev?
L4- Carl Grundstrom?/Blake Lizotte/Trevor Lewis?

F other- Jared Anderson-Dolan and who knows? Samuel Fagemo, Alex Turcotte (Lorde help us) and any warm bodies who show at training camp, I guess. (Zach McEwen was non-tendered, so we're lacking a "physical option", for the nonce, too.)

Is that a Cup-winning squad? Hell of a third line (2 guys on 8x8 deals), but it feels thinnnn everywhere. Hmm.

Canes moves so far..........

They keep the captain Jordan Staal

Resigned goalies Anderssen & Raanta. It was thought only one would be kept & certainly not both.

They also extend F Jesper Fast

Signed FA D Dmitri Orlov...

....and F Michael Bunting

Thoughts.............

The FA signings give the Canes some offensive "oomph" but are not as big as I would like...............Goalie situation is solidified. As long as they are healthy. That has been the big issue w/these 2. As good a tandem in the NHL when they are feeling 100%. But a huge drop off when they are playing hurt.............I don't know where you are going to find a much better backline right now that the Canes. Burns, Slavin, Orlov, Skjei, Pesce, & Chatfield. So much so I think they signed Orlov in case they can find that offensive player they want & use Pesce as part of a trade package. Rumors are the Canes are kicking the tires around a Erik Karlson trade w/the Sharks.

I have access to them for the MLB and NBA but cannot find one for the NHL that is not behind a paywall

Korpisalo signed with Ottawa, so basically that's a swap for Talbot. Obviously a downgrade for the Kings, but again, the DuBois contract factored in here.

(Better be worth it, P-LD…)

I usually never pay attention to the Leafs in the off-season. But I'm quite interested to see how they get under the cap in the coming days.

I will make a bold prediction for the forthcoming season: the Maple Leafs will NOT win the Stanley Cup.

It always shocks me at how little hockey players get paid compared to other professional sports.

Not me. What shocks me is how much more NBA players get paid than anyone else. I think I heard the contract van Fleet signed for this summer was more than what Magic, Dr J & Bird made in their entire playing careers combined.

My favorite fact was in the summer of 2022 when Nikola Jokic inked his extension, it equaled the total deals combined of the top 36 NHL free agents from that summer.

Ice hockey is lucrative, baseball and basketball are insanely lucrative.

That's van Vleet.

Altho, given how the Rockets played at times last season, Greta Van Fleet may well have been an upgrade, too.

(And congrats to Seb. Canes look to be doing a nice job of raising expectations, so far.)

So apparently, we could have had Toffoli back for Yegor Sharungovich (or the equivalent) and a #3 pick. Grrr.

And uTree thinks that the Winnipeg piece we should have targeted was Hellebuyck, on the theory that we could win a Cup with Kopitar/Danault/Byfield/Lizotte at C, but not with our odds and ends in the net. Hmm.

Jonathan Quick signed to back up Шестёркин on Broadway, so I hope he's happy.

(Not as happy as Canes fans doubtless are at the return of Tony D., but still.)
