Mike Johnson

Mike Johnson was the Pirates 11th round pick in 1979 out of Osseo HS in MN. He pitched for the Pirates from 1979-81 going 16-21 in 57 G with 54 GS and 321IP.

He pitched for the Mariners organization from 1982 until the end of his career in 1985. In 1982, for Wausau, he was 9-7 with a 5.01 E.R.A in 30 G with 17 GS striking out 103 in 106 IP. He went to Bakersfield in 1983 and was 2-7 with a 2.54 E.R.A in the hitting friendly league saving 9 games and striking out 97 in 67 IP.

1984 saw him in AA Chattanooga working mostly out of the pen (39 G, 7 GS) with a 8-3 record and a 3.62 E.R.A while seeing his command take a dramatic dip as he struck out only 43 and walked 56 in 70 IP. *To me this is usually a good sign that there is some kind of injury

In 1985 he pitched for the AA team again (6 G) but saw most of his work back in A ball at Salinas going 8-5 with a 5.47 E.R.A over 22 G with 10 GS ands a 54/58 K/BB ratio in 79 IP.

He was done after that....and finished with a 43-44 record in 203 G with 14 SV and a 474/422 K/BB ratio over 650 IP.

He started 13 games for the 1980 Durham Bulls in A ball going 6-5 with a 2.83 E.R.A striking out 77 in 86 IP. He was at Savannah in AA ball in 1981 and he was 6-8 with a 4.15 E.R.A in 23 GS. He pitched in 1982 at Savannah again going 8-13 with a 3.93 E.R.A over 151 IP with 110 K. He also got in 2 games at AAA that season.

In 1983 he was back at AA going 11-7 with a 4.59 E.R.A striking out 106 in 137 IP., He finished his pro career at AAA Richmond in 1984 going 4-12 with a 4.42 E.R.A and a 68/80 K/BB ratio in 126 IP.

Did he have to wait until he fulfilled his military obligation before signing with Atlanta?

He was able to spend time with the Braves farm teams during his scheduled leave; several military academy players drafted by the Braves have done similar things.

Pitcher in Topps Vault release Christmas Eve was mis ID'd. MT347-348 is minor league pitcher Robert Johnston, a second round pick of the Padres in 1971 but who was out of baseball by sometime in 1974.

Wayne Norton

Wayne Norton, who died recently, was an outfielder on the KC Athletics roster in 1962. He is shown here with the Birmingham A's in a photo which was displayed on eBay in 2011.

Norton was better known for his baseball contributions following his playing days. A native Canadian, he founded Baseball Canada's Junior National Team and also was employed as a part time scout for the Montreal Expos. He managed Canada's Pan Am Games team in 1975. He was elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. In his later years, he gained more fame as a major league scout. He was an Orioles scout from 1996 through 1999, and a Mariners scout from 2000 until his death.

P.S. His date of death recently appeared in his family-placed obituary. The date of death was Jan. 6, 2018.

Michael Brooks

Michael Brooks was the Twins 9th round pick out of West Covina HS in 1968. He played from 1968-1973 in their organization. These pictures were taken in 1973 per TV. He played 2 more seasons of pro ball with the Indians in 74-75 and finished his pro career with a .265 .AVG over 2676 AB with 31 HR and 66 SB. During his career he spent most time at 3B but also spent significant time at 2B and SS and in the OF. He, also, pitched in 6 games.

He is still involved in the game of baseball
interesting though that this website mentions he was on the Twins major league roster in 1970 and 1972...not sure how that worked for those years

Brooks was on the Twins' spring roster in 1970 and 1972. I checked the April, 1970 and April, 1972 issues of Baseball Digest to verify. The spring major league rosters are in those issues.

I don't know of any evidence that Brooks stayed on the Twins major league active roster during the regular season.

Does anyone have the ID of the Yankees minor league pitcher shown in Vault KC 327-328? Had been told it was likely Joe Blake, but one of his former pitchers at Simpson College who is also a reporter said it did not look like him much at all.

Steve Blateric, who appeared in precisely one game for the 1972 Yankees -- so NOT just a minor leaguer. His career also included equally brief stops in Cincinnati and California.

The attached photo is from the Rocky Mount (NC) Telegram of Aug. 30, 1962. It shows Bert Barth with the Rocky Mount Leafs. He was quite a slugger that year with 33 HR and 136 RBI.

He was on the Baltimore Orioles' spring roster in 1959. He was a non-roster invitee with the Orioles in 1957 and 1958. If anyone wants to see a photo of him in an Orioles uniform, speak up and I'll post it.

Nice work, finding that. I'd love to see him in an Orioles uni.

About Bert Barth (from John-William Greenbaum at Baseball By The Letters):
Bert Barth was perhaps one of the first victims of “prospect hype”. Signed by Baltimore in 1957, he was literally compared to Babe Ruth. Yes, Babe Ruth. Could he hit? Yes, and from everyone’s recollections, he could do so at a Major League level. Could he pitch? Yes, but not well enough to make it on a Major League level. Bert threw a high 90’s fastball that was flat as a pancake and a slider that just kinda spun. But nobody could really agree if he was a pitcher, a first baseman, a third baseman, or an outfielder. It started to get to him and the pitching interfered with his hitting mechanics. Finally released, he began to tear up the Carolina League when he no longer had to pitch. But baseball was no longer fun for Bert. All that shifting around had turned it into one big chore. He retired at the age of 25, almost a lock to make the Major Leagues.

As requested. This photo had been displayed on eBay in 2010.

P.S. On the right is the same photo after I Photoshopped it in an attempt to remove the white lines from the cap. The lines were caused when I printed the original using a cartridge which should have been replaced.

Andy Lano

The pride of Portland, Maine, "Handy" Andy Lano is considered among the greatest athletes to graduate from Portland High School. He captained the school's baseball, basketball, and football teams in his senior year, was part of the championship basketball squad in 1943 and hit .508 for the baseball team in 1946. Primarily a shortstop and pitcher, then, he earned the nickname "Handy" because he was equally adept at any position on the diamond.

After high school, Andy served in the military and played semi-pro ball until he was picked up by the Washington Senators in 1953. A knee injury ended his pro baseball aspirations a few years later.

Lano did make his mark in sports. Working for the E.E. Taylor shoe company, he invented a golf shoe that became a favorite of, and won the endorsements of, golfers Sam Snead and Byron Nelson.

Andy was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. He passed away in 2011. A Memorial Scholarship was established in his name in 2013.

The first two images are from a recent eBay auction. The third, which allegedly features Senators lifer Clyde Milan on the left (shortly before he died), is from a current and unrelated eBay auction. All 3 are from 1953, when Andy was with the Bluefield Blue-Grays. I have grey-scaled and cropped all 3 (because I can't help myself).
