Bargain Bin / Value Cards Thread

Hey all. Last year there was a thread highlighting some of the best bang-for-the-buck value cards that performed well (or at least held their own) at any level. They were also great for tournaments, as often they were bronze and below.

Cards such as 69 LaValliere, 69 Gwynn, 69 Carew, etc. were all cheap, high performing cards. So far it looks as if 65 Rabbit Maranville could be this version's 64 Luis Aparicio. Another value card that I like is 65 Greg Gross, who is competent in the OF and good with the stick, especially against righties. Both are going for less than 500pp.

Anyone found any steals thus far?

Based on ratings and number crunching, looks like Ozzie Smith (68), Joe Tinker (68), Rabbit Maranville (65), Honus Wagner (66), and Morrie Rath (67) in the infield and Coco Crisp (65), Rick Miller (66), Vic Davalillo (69), and Joe Orsulak (64) might be players to look at. Don't have personal experience to draw on other than Wagner who hit over .300 for me in an entry pool, but then again, it was an entry pool....

Gwynn is always my go to - performs so well for a 69, all the way up to Gold usually.

He might've been the best value card of PT20. Great offense and defense, and could be acquired for less than 200PP. Have yet to see a Gwynn card in PT21 though, and trying to find his replacement has been difficult so far.

Edit: 59 Vic Power is a great bargain utility player. Very solid bat (62 contact, 93 Avoid K's) with decent D. He's 74 at 1B by default but can train to 69 at 2B (nice) and 62 at 3B. If desperate for a SS, he can train to 53 there as well. Currently going for 90PP.

Those guys are great for tourneys as well.

Approved. Crisp hits way over his OVR, steals bags, and pulled a GG for me, too.

Oz is finishing up crosstraining all four if positions, and the dutchman covers what Oz doesn't.

Outstanding values.

I feel like a great number of people are on to these players. So I don’t think it’s 100% accurate to say they are bargain bin guys. Players in the upper 60s who are very good are in great demand for Bronze tournaments it seems.

Nevertheless, these are good players to have in your team - it’s just that they’re not gonna be really cheap to pick up.

Agree. Even though I bought him Ozzie Smith going for over 2k in AH isn't quite a bargain. Vic is over 1000 in AH. 2B Del Pratt is a good rated card if you want to spend.

Here are some who have performed well in tourneys for me, although I have only entered a dozen for Bronze (2 winner and a 2nd place):

Charlie Babb - Switch hitter good speed, great fielding 70 contact and avoid K. 200pp in AH

2B Tim Naehring - also 1B SS 3B above 50 in all hit ratings. 125pp in AH

Ian Happ Live - All OF 1B 2B 3B, switch hitter 72 power, 68 eye. < 100pp in AH

Carl Yaz 68 overall 1B and LF. <200pp

Even Live Mike Yaz plays all OF had a couple series MVPs in a winner bronze tourney who knows < 100pp is a good price.

Live Pitchers seem to have the highest rated pitches and stuff rating if that means anything. They will be static for a while now. There are so many to go through tho

Jose Martinez(69) as a lefty bat at 1b or DH. 88/71/72/68/53 line against lefties. Wouldn't play him against righties though. Can be had for 100pp. IMO the best bronze bargain card there is if used against lefties only.

I also like the Matty Alou(67) card. He is a CF card that has a rating at 1b. I have him as my 1b against righties. High avg/avoidK. Doesn't hit for much power though. Cost around 300pp.

I also like the Micheal Young(68) card. Sucks at 3b, but is okay at 1b. If you don't want to platoon 1b, he hits well from both sides of the plate. Cost around 250pp.

Roberto Clemente 52 has been doing the business for me in iron tournies, 109 rated RF

I think the basic answer is that most high defensive players are outliers in lower tier cards so will have more value, mainly due to tournaments, so it will be difficult to find bargains for your normal PT team like you could last year

I'll second Jose Martinez as possibly the best value card available right now.

Everyone in bronze has a Ryan Yarbrough on staff.

I've seen him on the AH for about 100pp.

Bronze 1B Joe Mauer is a bargain at 500 PP.

Bronze C AJ Pyrzinski. I picked up mine for 250 and he hits with a good enough glove.

SP Teddy Higuera. I pulled mine in a pack so I don't know what his going rate is but he's been lights out in tournaments.

I am becoming convinced that Don Newcombe is the best Iron player in this game.

However, if his recent auction house trends are any indication, I am not the only one arriving at this conclusion.

I´ve had great luck with 79 Bobby Abreu. He´s terrible in the field but he´s a fantastic leadoff hitter, at least so far in stone and iron.
