So why can't we see what the current high bid is on a player? So we have to guess? Make numerous bids to find out? Doesn't seem right.

The winning bidder pays the second-highest price, i.e., the highest amount that anyone else was willing to pay for it, and the rest of your bid gets refunded. So, no, you don't have to guess the current high bid, nor do you have to make numerous bids to find out. Just bid however much you're willing to pay for it, and if you end up being the highest bidder, you only pay the same amount as you would have if you had to manually up your bid every time, without wasting all your leisure time doing that.
