The Coastal Baseball League - Dayford Pilots
This is a league I have played over the years but do not write about. Normally on my own I try to follow the whole league but this round I am going to focus on one team, the Dayford Pilots.
Some background on the Coastal Baseball League. It is a fictional country where in my mind baseball was first discovered. The country’s economy thrives on baseball and the businesses that support it. High School players that are skilled enough will get drafted by one of the professional teams. Other players will be lucky enough to go onto colleges that specialize in baseball and the business of baseball. There are both two- and four-year colleges for baseball studies, players will get drafted from these schools while others go into baseball supporting through other businesses. At this early point in time The Coastal League is considered the league that ever player wants to play in, the best of the best such as MLB is today. Currently only players from Coastal Island can play in the Coastal League but that could change overtime. At a later point I may or may not bring in historical players from the MLB such as foreign players come to the US to play today. We will see. The league consists of two leagues, the Eastern League and Western League. Each league has six teams in it and there is inter-league play. Each team has a AAA, AA, and A minor league. There is a feeder league system of high school, junior College and college level teams. A little about the Dayford Pilots. Dayford is home to the Coastal Island Air Force, that is where the Pilots nickname comes from. The Pilots play in the Eastern League and are an average market size and have a very loyal fan base. Their rival in the Eastern League is the Crandall Giants. Crandall is the largest city in the Coastal League similar to the Yankees in MLB, they are loved and hated. They are hated by the fans of Dayford. With that we pick up the 1890 season on May 2nd, one month into the season. The Pilots are 13-14, 5.5 games behind the 1st place Crandall Giants. Top Players this season for Dayford RF-Sherman Williams – Speedy OF that makes good contact and a great eye. Rated as the top RF in the Eastern League LF-Ed Galstad – Professional hitter with great power. Will draw a walk but will strikeout too. Rated as the top LF in the Eastern League. 2B-Vance Little - Good defensive 2B with gap power. Top 2B in the Eastern League 1B-Tom “Crabby” Hart – Hart has great bat speed and will hit his share of HR. He should be a DH due to his lack of defensive skill but is rated the 4th best 1B in the league. RP-Brian Rapp – While not the closer he has an elite fastball\curve combination. He is the top reliver in the Eastern League. The starting rotation is a weakness for the Pilots. So far through the first month of the season the Pilots are last with an ERA of 5.54 from their starters. The bullpen has been better with a 3.56 ERA which ranks 3rd. I am going to try to sim a series or a week then update, maybe a month. We will see how it flows. |

May 2 - Dayford over Rock Hall 5-0
Dayford comes away with a 5-0 win over the Retrievers. Josh Clark goes 8.1 innings to pick up the win while giving up only three hits and striking out 10. The best game of the year for the 26-year-old Clark who drops his ERA on the season to 2.54. At the plate CF-Andrew Greisen lead the way going 2-4 with his 2nd HR of the season while also driving in four runs. LF Ed Galstad chipped in with a triple and 2B Vance Little added two doubles on the day. May 3 -Rock Hall over Dayford 10-5 It was a bad start by Randy Brown who gave up six runs in the first and only lasted 2.1 innings. The score was 8-0 Rock Hall before the Pilots put three on the board in the in the 5th before falling 10-5. Sherman Williams had two doubles and Ed Galstad tripled for the second straight day. CF Alex Greisen left the game after a collision at home plate and will went on the DL with a foot injury. Transaction News – CF Alex Greisen to the DL, 3B Eric Stefko recalled from AAA. May 4 – Dayford 6, Rock Hall 2 Taking 2 of 3 from Rock Hall moved the Pilots record to .500 at 15-15. Dallas Foley turned in a great performance on the mound going 7 innings and only giving up 3 hits and no earned runs. Sherman Williams was again hot from the lead off spot going 3-5 with a double and a HR. Vance Little drove in a run with his 10th double of the year. Crandall dropped 2 of 3 to the Riverwood Indians, we are now 4.5 games out. |

June 1st Update
Dayford still remains 5.5 back on Crandall but a game up in the last playoff spot. Top two teams makes the plays off in the league. Starting pitching is still hurting the team as they are 5th with an ERA of 5.05 but the bullpen has the best ERA in the Western League. The offense continues to put up big numbers leading the league in Avg, OBP, OPS and stolen bases but dead last in HR. |
