Changing coaches during the season
Does changing hitting or pitching coaches during the season make any difference? Like getting a new hitting coach in early May when the superstar right fielder you just signed to an 8 year extension is hitting .175 with fewer than 10 RBI's. Just wondering if anybody ever noticed any difference when shaking up your coaching staff during the season.

i've done it a couple of times. it actually seemed to help a little. i guess it depends if the new guy coming in has a very good or excellent reputation, replacing some with lesser ratings.

Wouldn't this be the same hitting coach he had before when he became a superstar? Or did you just sign a new one in the offseason?

I was just about to post ask the same question the OP did. Right now, I am sitting in second place, a game and a half behind the Red Sox, in the AL East Division circa 1984 (May 28th). Normally, that would be great. Certainly, nothing to complain about, right?
The issue is my team hitting. It is atrocious. My pitching, however, is lights out. Well, sort of. I win so many games 1-0, 2-1, 3-2, 2-0, etc... But, a win is a win is a win. Here are my team statistics. And here are my individual batting stats. So, I was wondering if a new hitting coach might be helpful in mixing things up. Could I possibly make things worse? (Team Batting was great the previous 2 seasons). |

Don't have nearly enough information from you, but, If you believe your team is underperforming, then two things are likely 1) if you change coaches, your hitting will improve 2) if you keep the same coach, your hitting will improve. I have no idea if there's something within the game that would cause a previously successful coach to become unsuccessful. |

I've made coaching changes during the season, including firing the manager, and the team improved as a result. When the coaches are incompatible with the players and performance suffers, someone has to go.

The team probably would have gotten better with the same coach. Just like any batter who starts the season 1 for 20 is likely to hit better than that in their next 20 at bats. |

Or the batter can stay in a slump because he isn't good any more. One can only have so much patience with underperformance and at some point you have to pull the trigger. There are times when the coaches are not the right fit for the personnel, performance lacks, and it's time for a change.

That's a change in talent. So, there's no expectation he'll get better. If Mike Trout goes 0-20, then buys a new pair of underwear and goes 6-20, there's no reason to think it's because of the underwear and not just because you'd expect Trout to go 6-20. Quote:
