Virginia Baseball League- August 2019 Recap

The Martinsville Checkers held on to their 1 game lead that they entered August with, winning the VBL by.. 1 game! It was enough though, as they'll get a top 6 seed in the 2019 USBL Tournament. Drama for the 4th seed in the VBL Playoffs, as the Arlington Veterans lost their last 6 games of the regular season, but backed into the 4 seed as no other team could get hot... well, except for one team. The Williamsburg Colonials entered August 32-43, but won 6 of their last 9 and 4 in a row to end the season. With another few days, they might have leaped into the 4 spot, but as it stands, Arlington does, with by far the worst record of all of this years playoff teams.

The seeds for the 2019 VBL Playoffs are as follows:

#1- Martinsville Checkers
#2- Fairfax Federals
#3- Fredricksburg Generals
#4- Arlington Veterans

Because of the holiday and an out of town trip, it will be next week before I have the state playoffs simmed and reported on.

Don't be shy guys, if anybody has any questions, comments, suggestions, feel free to let me know. I do plan on keeping this going as long as possible, but interaction always helps. Thanks.

Semifinal Series #1

(4) Telluride Stouts vs. (1) Grand Junction Corkers

Game 1 -- Grand Junction wins 4-2
Game 2 -- Grand Junction wins 7-3
Game 3 -- Telluride wins 4-3
Game 4 -- Grand Junction wins 14-6

Grand Junction wins the series 3 games to 1, winning game 4 in easy fashion after struggling a bit in the first 3 games.

Semifinal Series #2

(3) Ft. Collins Rams vs. (2) Colorado Springs Chill

Game 1 -- Colorado Springs wins 5-2
Game 2 -- Colorado Springs wins 7-4
Game 3 -- Ft. Collins wins 5-1
Game 4 -- Colorado Springs wins 4-1

Colorado Springs wins the series 3 games to 1. Much like the first semifinal series, the higher seed missed a chance to sweep, but responded in impressive fashion in Game 4. With this series victory, and the fact that the top seed won their playoff semifinal, this means that Colorado Springs will be given the 2nd spot from the CBL, and will be recognized as the CBL Tourney winners.

CBL Finals

(2) Colorado Springs Chill vs. (1) Grand Junction Corkers

Game 1 -- Colorado Springs wins 4-2
Game 2 -- Colorado Springs wins 4-0
Game 3 -- Grand Junction wins 1-0
Game 4 -- Grand Junction wins 11-2
Game 5 -- Grand Junction wins 9-4

Grand Junction wins the CBL Finals 3 games to 2. After losing the first 2 games of the series, and home field advantage, the Corkers then went to Colorado Springs and won those 2 on the road, regaining home field advantage for the deciding game 5, in which they won pretty handily.

Both teams will represent the CBL in the inaugural USBL Tournament.

(4) London Kings vs. (1) Covington Cubs

Game 1 -- London wins 3-1
Game 2 -- Covington wins 4-2
Game 3 -- Covington wins 6-4
Game 4 -- Covington wins 6-4

Covington wins the series 3 games to 1, losing Game 1 but coming back to win the last 3. A useless bit of info, all 4 games in the series were decided by 2 runs. With the top seed advancing to the KYBL Championship Series, that means the winner of semifinal series #2 will earn the 2nd spot from the KYBL into the USBL Tournament.

Semifinal Series #2

(3) Bowling Green Bulldogs vs. (2) Hazard Moonshiners

Game 1 -- Hazard wins 8-5
Game 2 -- Hazard wins 4-1

Hazard wins the series 3 games to 0. A clean sweep for the Moonshiners, who earn a berth to the USBL Tournament, and will look to better their seeding in the KYBL Championship Series.

KYBL Championship Series

(2) Hazard Moonshiners vs. (1) Covington Cubs

Game 1 -- Covington wins 4-2
Game 2 -- Covington wins 7-3
Game 3 -- Hazard wins 3-2

ok, break time. Got to get some errands ran and go to work for a bit. Be back later with the playoff results for the last 3 leagues, and a look at the USBL tournament seeds and bracket.

Again, if anybody wants to see anything particular added in my monthly or playoff reports, please let me know. Thanks.

Game 3 -- St. Louis wins 11-5
Game 4 -- St. Louis wins 6-3

St. Louis wins the series 3 games to 1, in pretty convincing fashion after losing the first game of the series. With the top seed advancing, that means the winner of our next semifinal series will be the 2nd team from the MBL in the USBL Tournament.

New Jersey Baseball League- Playoff Recap

Semifinal Series #1

(4) Paterson Bats vs. (1) Princeton Phantoms

Game 1 -- Paterson wins 10-3
Game 2 -- Princeton wins 7-2
Game 3 -- Paterson wins 6-2
Game 4 -- Princeton wins 10-2
Game 5 -- Paterson wins 7-6

Paterson wins the series 3 games to 2, I believe this is our first series that went the distance. Paterson won the odd numbered games, Princeton won the even numbered games. The Phantoms had already clinched their spot in the USBL Tournament, but are another team that is likely to see their seed drop. That means the NJBL Championship Series will legit be for a berth in the USBL Tournament.

Semifinal Series #2

(3) Newark Fightin Whites vs. (2) Jersey City Panthers

Game 1 -- Jersey City wins 3-2
Game 2 -- Jersey City wins 19-0
Game 3 -- Newark wins 4-2
Game 4 -- Newark wins 8-5
Game 5 -- Newark wins 10-3

Newark wins the series 3 games to 2, coming back from a 2-nothing deficit. It appears the Panthers got a little cocky after their 19-0 win in game #2, and it has cost them a chance to participate in the USBL Tournament.

NJBL Championship Series

(4) Paterson Bats vs. (3) Newark Fightin Whites

Game 1 -- Paterson wins 6-0
Game 2 -- Newark wins 11-3
Game 3 -- Newark wins 8-4
Game 4 -- Paterson wins 3-1
Game 5 -- Paterson wins 14-10

Paterson wins the NJBL Championship Series 3 games to 2. All 3 series' went the distance, all 5 games. Impressive. Game 5 was obviously a pitch by committee, and it came down to who could get outs. With this, the Bats will get the 2nd NJBL spot in the USBL tournament.

Virginia Baseball League- Playoff Recap

Semifinal Series #1

(4) Arlington Veterans vs. (1) Martinsville Checkers

Game 1 -- Arlington wins 8-7
Game 2 -- Arlington wins 8-6
Game 3 -- Martinsville wins 10-0
Game 4 -- Martinsville wins 12-9
Game 5 -- Martinsville wins 2-1

Martinsville wins the series 3 games to 2, our 4th straight series that went the distance. The Checkers had to come from 2 games down to do it, but they got it down. That means the winner of our next semifinal series will take the 2nd slot in the USBL Tournament out of the VBL.

Semifinal Series #2

(3) Fredricksburg Generals vs. (2) Fairfax Federals

Game 1 -- Fredricksburg wins 4-2
Game 2 -- Fredricksburg wins 5-2
Game 3 -- Fredricksburg wins 9-2

Fredricksburg wins the series 3-0 in a clean sweep, and boy were they consistent. They gave up 2 runs in every single game. With that win, another very strong USBL team goes down early, and the Federals will be kicking themselves. The Generals take the 2nd spot from the VBL in the USBL Tournament.

VBL Championship Series

Game 1 -- Fredricksburg wins 6-5
Game 2 -- Fredricksburg wins 5-3
Game 3 -- Martinsville wins 11-3
Game 4 -- Martinsville wins 8-3
Game 5 -- Martinsville wins 9-4

Martinsville wins the VBL Championship Series 3 games to 2, once again having to rally from a 2-0 deficit to do it. But they become the 4th team out of 6 possible to pull the double, and that will land them a top 4 seed and a bye in the USBL Tournament.

2019 USBL Tournament Seeds

Regular Season Champion Tiebreakers

This isn't perfect, by any means, but this is how I am seeding the regular season champions.

1- League Playoff Finish
2- Regular Season Record

I think teams that do the double (regular season and tourney champs) deserve the highest seeds, and I think all regular season champs deserve the highest seeds, because they did it all season, not just in a 5 game series.

Tournament Champion Tiebreakers

This one may get revised a little bit, I wasn't sure of the best format for this one, but this is what I'm going with for the inaugural USBL Tournament. If anybody thinks revisions need to be made, let me know.

1- Regular season finish
2- League Tournament Finish
3- Regular Season Record

This is where the controversy comes in. I still think that performance in the regular season should take more precedence over getting lucky in a couple 5 game series'. But with Paterson winning the NJBL Tournament, some feel that should be recognized more. I disagree, but I'm willing to take opinions. As it stands, these are the seeds for the Inaugural (2019) USBL Tournament.

#1- Covington, Kentucky Cubs- KYBL Regular Season and Tournament Champs, 59-25 record.
#2- Grand Junction, Colorado Corkers- CBL Regular Season and Tournament Champs, 58-26 record.
#3- Martinsville, Virginia Checkers- VBL Regular Season and Tournament Champs, 55-29 record.
#4- St. Louis, Missouri Perfectos- MBL Regular Season and Tournament Champs, 53-31 record.
#5- Salina, Kansas Blue Jays- KSBL Regular Season Champs, Lost in KBL Semifinals, 58-26 record.
#6- Princeton, New Jersey Phantoms- NJBL Regular Season Champs, Lost in KBL Semifinals, 52-32 record.
#7- Topeka, Kansas Golden Giants- 2nd place in KSBL Regular Season, Won KSBL Tournament, 53-31 record.
#8- Hazard, Kentucky Moonshiners- 2nd place in KYBL Regular Season, Lost in KYBL Finals, 49-35 record.
#9- Columbia, Missouri Tigers- 2nd place in MBL Regular Season, Lost in MBL Finals, 49-35 record.
#10- Colorado Springs, Colorado Chill- 2nd place in CBL Regular Season, Lost in CBL Finals, 42-42 record.
#11- Fredricksburg, Virginia Generals- 3rd place in VBL Regular Season, Lost in VBL Finals, 48-36 record.
#12- Paterson, New Jersey Bats- 4th place in NJBL Regular Season, NJBL Tournament Champs, 44-40 record.

A coin flip was used to determine seed 8 and 9, as they had the same identifying factors. In most cases, I try to set it up so that teams from the same state won't meet before the semifinals, but there was no way around it at this point. We may have teams from the same state meeting in the quarterfinals. Here's the matchups:

(9) Columbia, MO vs. (8) Hazard, KY - winner plays (1) Covington, KY in Quarterfinals
(12) Paterson, NJ vs. (5) Salina, KS - winner plays (4) St. Louis, MO in Quarterfinals
(11) Fredricksburg, VA vs. (6) Princeton, NJ - winner plays (3) Martinsville, VA in Quarterfinals
(10) Colorado Springs, CO vs. (7) Topeka, KS- winner plays (2) Grand Junction, CO in Quarterfinals

So we could have Colorado, Virginia, and Kentucky seeing their teams play each other in the Quarterfinals. Unfortunately, no way around it. Wasn't enough tie to separate the teams. Again, I'm open to suggestions on how to fix this moving forward. Here's a look at the bracket, and I will try to run the playoffs on Friday.

2019 USBL Tournament First Round
(12) Paterson (NJ) Bats vs. (5) Salina (KS) Blue Jays

Game 1 - Salina (KS) Blue Jays- 6, Paterson (NJ) Bats- 5 -- The Blue Jays led 6-1 after 4 innings, thanks in large part to 3 RBIs from Tom Schroeder. The Bats rallied back, getting 3 unearned runs in the 9th, but couldn't get any closer than 6-5.

Game 2 - Paterson (NJ) Bats- 14, Salina (KS) Blue Jays- 8 -- An old fashioned shootout in this one, as the Bats scored 12 of their 14 runs in the first 4 innings and led 12-4 after 4. Jonathan Liebler had a pair of 3 run homers, for the Bats, getting 6 RBIs for the game.

Game 3 - Salina (KS) Blue Jays- 6, Paterson (NJ) Bats- 2 -- Danny Elder pitched 6 innings of 3 hit ball for the Blue Jays, and Salina got 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to break open a close game. Tim Davis and Jake Acosta each had 2 RBIs for the Blue Jays.

The Salina (KS) Blue Jays win their first round series 2 games to 1 and advance in the 2019 USBL Tournament to take on the 4th seed St. Louis (MO) Perfectos.

2019 USBL Tournament First Round
(11) Fredricksburg (VA) Generals vs. (6) Princeton (NJ) Phantoms

Game 1 - Princeton (NJ) Phantoms- 8, Fredricksburg (VA) Generals- 4 -- Bill Brewer did a little bit of everything in this one for the Phantoms, going 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs, and also scoring 3 runs.

Game 2 - Fredricksburg (VA) Generals- 2, Princeton (NJ) Phantoms- 0 -- Despite being outhit 9-6, the Generals kept Princeton off the scoreboard. Fredricksburg starting pitcher Danny Gladstone pitched 7 shutout innings, and then Tom Long pitched the last 2 innings to get a 2 inning save.

Game 3 - Fredricksburg (VA) Generals- 10, Princeton (NJ) Phantoms- 6 -- Pitching was a weak spot for both teams in this one. Although the Generals were outhit 10-7, Princeton pitchers walked 6 batters in the game. 7 of Fredrickburg's 10 runs came in the 3rd inning. Nick Henningsen was 2-4 for the Generals, hitting a 3 run homer in that fateful 3rd inning, and ended up with 4 RBIs for the game.

The Fredricksburg (VA) Generals win the series 2 games to 1, advancing in the 2019 USBL Tournament where it will be in all Virginia affair in one quarterfinal matchup, as the Generals will take on the 3rd seed Martinsville (VA) Checkers.

The Princeton (NJ) Phantoms, winners of the NJBL regular season, finish with a whimper as they lost in the semifinals of the NJBL Playoffs, then lost in the First Round of the USBL Tournament.

2019 USBL Tournament First Round
(10) Colorado Springs (CO) Chill vs. (7) Topeka (KS) Golden Giants

Game 1 - Topeka (KS) Golden Giants- 5, Colorado Springs (CO) Chill- 1 -- Golden Giants starting pitcher Pedro Morillo went 7 innings, giving up 1 run and 1 hit, striking out 11. The Chill managed just 3 hits all game, with 2 of the 3 coming from Jose Puccini.

Game 2 - Topeka (KS) Golden Giants- 6, Colorado Springs (CO) Chill- 1 -- Another dominating pitching performance for the Golden Giants, who gave up just 5 hits in this one. Topeka starter Sergio Huerta gave up all 5 of those hits, but just 1 run in 6 1/3 innings. Rich Vargas was 3 for 4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs.

The Topeka (KS) Golden Giants win the best of 3 series 2 games to nothing, the only First Round winner to sweep. They advance in the 2019 USBL Tournament and have a chance to eliminate both Colorado teams, as they take on the 2nd seed Grand Junction (CO) Corkers in the Quarterfinals.

Just to recap, the Quarterfinals of the 2019 USBL Recap are as follows:

(9) Columbia (MO) Tigers vs. (1) Covington (KY) Cubs
(5) Salina (KS) Blue Jays vs. (4) St. Louis (MO) Perfectos
(11) Fredricksburg (VA) Generals vs. (3) Martinsville (VA) Checkers
(7) Topeka (KS) Golden Giants vs. (2) Grand Junction (CO) Corkers

I am going to try to get the Quarterfinals simmed and reported on tomorrow, but I have a pretty busy Saturday, so it may not be until Sunday. Either way, the 2019 USBL Tournament will be wrapped up by Monday, and then we will be in the offseason where we will add 3 new states, and state commissioner can then change certain league rules, playoff configurations (I will be changing the Kansas State Playoffs to feature 6 teams instead of 4), and can even relocate teams if they so desire. By relocate I simply mean change city names.

Hope you all are enjoying, and please if there are any comments at all, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Game 2 - Covington (KY) Cubs- 12, Columbia (MO) Tigers- 0 -- Justin Metcalf could not be stopped in this one, as he went 3 for 5 for the Cubs with 7 RBIs, including a grand slam in the fifth inning. 2 pitchers combined for the shutout, as Chris Mau started and went 5 innings, and Salvador Valentin went the last 4 innings.

Game 3 - Covington (KY) Cubs- 6, Columbia (MO) Tigers- 2 -- The Cubs scored single runs in innings 4-7 to break open a 2-2 tie, as Mike Wilkinson had 3 of the teams 6 RBIs.

The Covington (KY) Cubs win the series in dominating fashion, sweeping 3 games to none, with 2 of the games being total blowouts. They now await the winner of Quarterfinal #2 between the Salina (KS) Blue Jays and the St. Louis (MO) Perfectos.

2019 USBL Tournament Quarterfinals
(5) Salina (KS) Blue Jays vs. (4) St. Louis (MO) Perfectos

Game 1 - Salina (KS) Blue Jays- 10, St. Louis (MO) Perfectos- 1 -- All but 1 of the Blue Jays starters got at least 1 hit in this one, as Salina had 14 hits as a team. St. Louis actually had 10 hits, but left a lot of men on base.

Game 2 - St. Louis (MO) Perfectos- 3, Salina (KS) Blue Jays- 2 -- Roberto Renteria kept the Salina bats at bay in this one, going 7 innings and giving up just the 2 runs and 5 hits.

Game 3 - Salina (KS) Blue Jays- 4, St. Louis (MO) Perfectos- 3 -- Hits were hard to come by in this one, as the teams combined for just 9 total hits. Salina had 3 errors which led to all 3 of the St. Louis runs, but it just wasn't enough.

Game 4 - Salina (KS) Blue Jays- 11, St. Louis (MO) Perfectos- 2 -- This time, all 9 starters for the Blue Jays got at least 1 base hit, with Jim Kueffner going 3 for 4 with a double and 4 RBIs.

The Salina (KS) Blue Jays win the series 3 games to 1 and advance to the USBL Semifinals to take on the top seed Covington (KY) Cubs in our first semifinal.

2019 USBL Tournament Quarterfinals
(11) Fredricksburg (VA) Generals vs. (3) Martinsville (VA) Checkers

Game 1 - Martinsville (VA) Checkers- 6, Fredricksburg (VA) Generals-1 -- Dan Butler pitched 7 innings of 2 hit, shutout ball for the Checkers, and Martinsville had 4 homers in the game, all solo shots.

Game 2 - Fredricksburg (VA) Generals- 3, Martinsville (VA) Checkers- 1 -- 4 General pitchers combined to hold Martinsville to just 5 hits, and Chris Knowles had a 2 run homer in the second inning that ultimately decided the game.

Game 3 - Fredricksburg (VA) Generals- 6, Martinsville (VA) Checkers- 5 -- A back and forth game all the way, but Edgar Zarate had the big hit for Fredricksburg, getting a 2 run homer in the eight inning to give the Generals the lead, and they held in the ninth.

Game 4 - Martinsville (VA) Checkers- 5, Fredricksburg (VA) Generals- 3 -- Barry Kruse was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI for the Checkers as they evened the series.

Game 5 - Fredricksburg (VA) Generals- 3, Martinsville (VA) Checkers- 2 -- Baseball is a funny game sometimes. In this game, the Generals had 3 hits, the Checkers had 13. Yet Fredricksburg found a way to keep all those Martinsville base runners from scoring, and Chris Knowles was a hero again, hitting a base clearing, 3 RBI double in the seventh.

The Fredricksburg (VA) Generals win the all Virginia series 3 games to 2, overcoming the odds in Game 5, and becoming the first double digit seed to advance to the USBL semifinals (Although I'm expecting we'll have more). They will take on the winner of Quarterfinal Series #4 between the Topeka (KS) Golden Giants and the Grand Junction (CO) Corkers.

2019 USBL Tournament Quarterfinal
(7) Topeka (KS) Golden Giants vs. (2) Grand Junction (CO) Corkers

Game 1 - Grand Junction (CO) Corkers- 3, Topeka (KS) Golden Giants- 2 -- The Corkers scored all 3 of their runs in the ninth inning, as James Wilhite came off the bench to hit a 2 run homer in the inning. Steve Coronado pitched 6 2/3 innings of 2 hit, shutout ball for Grand Junction.

Game 2 - Topeka (KS) Golden Giants- 6, Grand Junction (CO) Corkers- 4 -- Alfredo Gonzalez and Isaiah Clark combined for 5 of the 6 Topeka RBIs as they even the series at 1 game a piece.

Game 3 - Grand Junction (CO) Corkers- 7, Topeka (KS) Golden Giants- 6 -- It came down to a walk off in game 3, as the Corkers scored 2 in the eighth to tie the game at 6, then Lyle Clegg hit the walk off home run in the bottom of the 9th to give Grand Junction a 2-1 series lead.

Game 4 - Grand Junction (CO) Corkers- 7, Topeka (KS) Golden Giants- 2 -- The Corkers jumped out early, scoring all 7 of their runs in the first 3 innings, and Grand Junction starting pitcher Kevin Cobb pitched 6 innings and gave up just 2 runs.

The Grand Junction (CO) Corkers win the series 3 games to 1, advancing to the USBL semifinals where the upset minded Fredricksburg (VA) Generals await.

The 2019 USBL Semifinals are set:

(5) Salina (KS) Blue Jays vs. (1) Covington (KY) Cubs
(11) Fredricksburg (VA) Generals vs. (2) Grand Junction (CO) Corkers

Will the top 2 seeds continue to dominate? Will Fredricksburg continue their cinderella story? Tune in tomorrow as both the semifinals and the USBL Championship Series will be simmed and reported on, as 4 state commissioners are waiting to see who will have the honor of being the first ever USBL champions.

Alright everybody, I lost the write-up that I had for the USBL Semifinals and Finals, so in an effort to get the new 3 states in, I'm just going to get through this.

2019 USBL Semifinals

(5) Salina (KS) Blue Jays defeated (1) Covington (KY) Cubs 4 games to 3.
(2) Grand Junction (CO) Corkers defeated (11) Fredricksburg (VA) Generals 4 games to 2.

2019 USBL Championship Series

(5) Salina (KS) Blue Jays defeated (2) Grand Junction (CO) Corkers 4 games to 3.

So one of my teams, the Salina (KS) Blue Jays, wins the inaugural USBL Championship. I promise, I didn't set it up that way, I was as shocked as anybody. But I'll take all congratulations anybody wants to give. haha. I will take a break and give everybody a chance to make any rule changes or team changes they want to make.

I am making the following change for the KSBL- The playoffs will now include the top 6 teams, giving even more teams a chance.

Thanks everybody for following and getting a state in, much appreciated.
